Jeremiah 9:4-9
English Standard Version
4 (A)Let everyone beware of his neighbor,
and put no trust in any brother,
for every (B)brother is a deceiver,
and every neighbor (C)goes about as a slanderer.
5 Everyone deceives his neighbor,
and no one speaks the truth;
they have taught their tongue to speak lies;
they weary themselves committing iniquity.
6 Heaping oppression upon oppression, and deceit upon deceit,
(D)they refuse to know me, declares the Lord.
7 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts:
“Behold, (E)I will refine them and (F)test them,
for what else can I do, (G)because of my people?
8 (H)Their tongue is a deadly arrow;
(I)it speaks deceitfully;
with his mouth (J)each speaks peace to his neighbor,
but in his heart (K)he plans an ambush for him.
9 (L)Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the Lord,
and shall I not avenge myself
on a nation such as this?
Jeremiah 9:4-9
New International Version
4 “Beware of your friends;(A)
do not trust anyone in your clan.(B)
For every one of them is a deceiver,[a](C)
and every friend a slanderer.(D)
5 Friend deceives friend,(E)

They have taught their tongues to lie;(G)
they weary themselves with sinning.
6 You[b] live in the midst of deception;(H)

declares the Lord.
7 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says:
“See, I will refine(I) and test(J) them,
for what else can I do
because of the sin of my people?
8 Their tongue(K) is a deadly arrow;
it speaks deceitfully.
With their mouths they all speak cordially to their neighbors,(L)
but in their hearts they set traps(M) for them.(N)
9 Should I not punish them for this?”
declares the Lord.
“Should I not avenge(O) myself
on such a nation as this?”
