  1. 2 Peter 3:12 Or as you wait eagerly for the day of God to come

in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to (A)the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.

Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by (B)prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and (C)made confession, saying, (D)“O Lord, the (E)great and awesome God, who (F)keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, (G)we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly (H)and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. (I)We have not listened to (J)your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to (K)our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. To you, (L)O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, (M)those who are near and (N)those who are far away, in (O)all the lands to which you have driven them, because of (P)the treachery that they have committed against you. To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because (Q)we have sinned against you. (R)To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him 10 (S)and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by (T)his servants the prophets. 11 (U)All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, (V)refusing to obey your voice. (W)And the curse and oath (X)that are written in the Law of (Y)Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because (Z)we have sinned against him. 12 He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against (AA)our rulers who ruled us,[a] by (AB)bringing upon us a great calamity. (AC)For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem. 13 (AD)As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, (AE)turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. 14 (AF)Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, (AG)for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and (AH)we have not obeyed his voice. 15 And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt (AI)with a mighty hand, and (AJ)have made a name for yourself, as at this day, (AK)we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

16 “O Lord, (AL)according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, (AM)your holy hill, (AN)because for our sins, and for (AO)the iniquities of our fathers, (AP)Jerusalem and your people have become (AQ)a byword among all who are around us. 17 Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord,[b] (AR)make your face to shine upon (AS)your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18 (AT)O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see (AU)our desolations, and (AV)the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. (AW)Delay not, (AX)for your own sake, O my God, because (AY)your city and (AZ)your people are called by your name.”

Gabriel Brings an Answer

20 (BA)While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for (BB)the holy hill of my God, 21 while I was speaking in prayer, the man (BC)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, (BD)came to me in swift flight at (BE)the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 (BF)He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you (BG)insight and understanding. 23 (BH)At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, (BI)and I have come to tell it to you, for (BJ)you are greatly loved. Therefore consider the word (BK)and understand the vision.

The Seventy Weeks

24 (BL)“Seventy weeks[c] are decreed about your people and (BM)your holy city, to finish (BN)the transgression, to put an end to sin, (BO)and to atone for iniquity, (BP)to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and (BQ)to anoint a most holy place.[d] 25 (BR)Know therefore and understand that (BS)from the going out of the word to restore and (BT)build Jerusalem to the coming of an (BU)anointed one, a (BV)prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again[e] with squares and moat, (BW)but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall (BX)be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come (BY)shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. (BZ)Its[f] end shall come with a flood, (CA)and to the end there shall be war. (CB)Desolations are decreed. 27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week,[g] and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. (CC)And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until (CD)the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy(A) years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting,(B) and in sackcloth and ashes.(C)

I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:(D)

“Lord, the great and awesome God,(E) who keeps his covenant of love(F) with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned(G) and done wrong.(H) We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away(I) from your commands and laws.(J) We have not listened(K) to your servants the prophets,(L) who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors,(M) and to all the people of the land.

“Lord, you are righteous,(N) but this day we are covered with shame(O)—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far, in all the countries where you have scattered(P) us because of our unfaithfulness(Q) to you.(R) We and our kings, our princes and our ancestors are covered with shame, Lord, because we have sinned against you.(S) The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving,(T) even though we have rebelled against him;(U) 10 we have not obeyed the Lord our God or kept the laws he gave us through his servants the prophets.(V) 11 All Israel has transgressed(W) your law(X) and turned away, refusing to obey you.

“Therefore the curses(Y) and sworn judgments(Z) written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned(AA) against you. 12 You have fulfilled(AB) the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing on us great disaster.(AC) Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like(AD) what has been done to Jerusalem.(AE) 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord(AF) our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth.(AG) 14 The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster(AH) on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does;(AI) yet we have not obeyed him.(AJ)

15 “Now, Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand(AK) and who made for yourself a name(AL) that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts,(AM) turn away(AN) your anger and your wrath(AO) from Jerusalem,(AP) your city, your holy hill.(AQ) Our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn(AR) to all those around us.

17 “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, Lord, look with favor(AS) on your desolate sanctuary. 18 Give ear,(AT) our God, and hear;(AU) open your eyes and see(AV) the desolation of the city that bears your Name.(AW) We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy.(AX) 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive!(AY) Lord, hear and act! For your sake,(AZ) my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”

The Seventy “Sevens”

20 While I was speaking and praying, confessing(BA) my sin and the sin of my people Israel and making my request to the Lord my God for his holy hill(BB) 21 while I was still in prayer, Gabriel,(BC) the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.(BD) 22 He instructed me and said to me, “Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding.(BE) 23 As soon as you began to pray,(BF) a word went out, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed.(BG) Therefore, consider the word and understand the vision:(BH)

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’[a] are decreed for your people and your holy city(BI) to finish[b] transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone(BJ) for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness,(BK) to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.[c]

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild(BL) Jerusalem until the Anointed One,[d](BM) the ruler,(BN) comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble.(BO) 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death(BP) and will have nothing.[e] The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood:(BQ) War will continue until the end, and desolations(BR) have been decreed.(BS) 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’[f] In the middle of the ‘seven’[g] he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple[h] he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed(BT) is poured out on him.[i][j]
