¹³ Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind^(A) and straining toward what is ahead, ¹⁴ I press on^(B) toward the goal to win the prize^(C) for which God has called^(D) me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

¹⁶ And do not forget to do good and to share with others,^(A) for with such sacrifices^(B) God is pleased.

¹⁷ Have confidence in your leaders^(C) and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you^(D) as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.

¹⁷ Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax^[a](A) to Caesar or not?”

¹⁸ But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? ¹⁹ Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, ²⁰ and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

²¹ “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,^(B) and to God what is God’s.”
