(A)If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or (B)swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall (C)do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

“Or if a woman makes a vow to the Lord, and binds herself by some agreement while in her father’s house in her youth, and her father hears her vow and the agreement by which she has bound herself, and her father [a]holds his peace, then all her vows shall stand, and every agreement with which she has bound herself shall stand. But if her father overrules her on the day that he hears, then none of her vows nor her agreements by which she has bound herself shall stand; and the Lord will release her, because her father overruled her.

“If indeed she takes a husband, while bound by her vows or by a rash utterance from her lips by which she bound herself, and her husband hears it, and makes no response to her on the day that he hears, then her vows shall stand, and her agreements by which she bound herself shall stand. But if her husband (D)overrules her on the day that he hears it, he shall make void her vow which she took and what she uttered with her lips, by which she bound herself, and the Lord will release her.

“Also any vow of a widow or a divorced woman, by which she has bound herself, shall stand against her.

10 “If she vowed in her husband’s house, or bound herself by an agreement with an oath, 11 and her husband heard it, and made no response to her and did not overrule her, then all her vows shall stand, and every agreement by which she bound herself shall stand. 12 But if her husband truly made them void on the day he heard them, then whatever proceeded from her lips concerning her vows or concerning the agreement binding her, it shall not stand; her husband has made them [b]void, and the Lord will release her. 13 Every vow and every binding oath to afflict her soul, her husband may confirm it, or her husband may make it void. 14 Now if her husband makes no response whatever to her from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or all the agreements that bind her; he confirms them, because he made no response to her on the day that he heard them. 15 But if he does make them void after he has heard them, then he shall bear her guilt.”

16 These are the statutes which the Lord commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter in her youth in her father’s house.

Vengeance on the Midianites

31 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: (E)“Take vengeance on the Midianites for the children of Israel. Afterward you shall (F)be gathered to your people.”

So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm some of yourselves for war, and let them go against the Midianites to take vengeance for the Lord on (G)Midian. A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war.”

So there were recruited from the divisions of Israel one thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. Then Moses sent them to the war, one thousand from each tribe; he sent them to the war with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy articles and (H)the signal trumpets in his hand. And they warred against the Midianites, just as the Lord commanded Moses, and (I)they killed all the (J)males. They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed—(K)Evi, Rekem, (L)Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. (M)Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword.

And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and took as spoil all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their goods. 10 They also burned with fire all the cities where they dwelt, and all their forts. 11 And (N)they took all the spoil and all the booty—of man and beast.

Return from the War

12 Then they brought the captives, the booty, and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho. 13 And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went to meet them outside the camp. 14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, who had come from the battle.

15 And Moses said to them: “Have you kept (O)all the women alive? 16 Look, (P)these women caused the children of Israel, through the (Q)counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the Lord in the incident of Peor, and (R)there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord. 17 Now therefore, (S)kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man intimately. 18 But keep alive (T)for yourselves all the young girls who have not known a man intimately. 19 And as for you, (U)remain outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person, and (V)whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day. 20 Purify every garment, everything made of leather, everything woven of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood.”

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to the battle, “This is the [c]ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses: 22 Only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 23 everything that can endure fire, you shall put through the fire, and it shall be clean; and it shall be purified (W)with the water of purification. But all that cannot endure fire you shall put through water. 24 (X)And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp.”

Division of the Plunder

25 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 26 “Count up the plunder that was [d]taken—of man and beast—you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation; 27 and (Y)divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. 28 And levy a [e]tribute for the Lord on the men of war who went out to battle: (Z)one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep; 29 take it from their half, and (AA)give it to Eleazar the priest as a heave offering to the Lord. 30 And from the children of Israel’s half you shall take (AB)one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites (AC)who [f]keep charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.” 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

32 The booty remaining from the plunder, which the men of war had taken, was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, 33 seventy-two thousand cattle, 34 sixty-one thousand donkeys, 35 and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women who had not known a man intimately. 36 And the half, the portion for those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep; 37 and the Lord’s [g]tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five. 38 The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the Lord’s tribute was seventy-two. 39 The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the Lord’s tribute was sixty-one. 40 The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the Lord’s tribute was thirty-two persons. 41 So Moses gave the tribute which was the Lord’s heave offering to Eleazar the priest, (AD)as the Lord commanded Moses.

42 And from the children of Israel’s half, which Moses separated from the men who fought— 43 now the half belonging to the congregation was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, 44 thirty-six thousand cattle, 45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, 46 and sixteen thousand persons— 47 and (AE)from the children of Israel’s half Moses took one of every fifty, drawn from man and beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

48 Then the officers who were over thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came near to Moses; 49 and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a count of the men of war who are under our command, and not a man of us is missing. 50 Therefore we have brought an offering for the Lord, what every man found of ornaments of gold: armlets and bracelets and signet rings and earrings and necklaces, (AF)to make [h]atonement for ourselves before the Lord.” 51 So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from them, all the fashioned ornaments. 52 And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the Lord, from the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. 53 (AG)(The men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.) 54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of meeting (AH)as a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.

The Tribes Settling East of the Jordan(AI)

32 Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and when they saw the land of (AJ)Jazer and the land of (AK)Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock, the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, (AL)Nimrah, (AM)Heshbon, Elealeh, (AN)Shebam, Nebo, and (AO)Beon, the country (AP)which the Lord defeated before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” Therefore they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not take us over the Jordan.”

And Moses said to the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben: “Shall your brethren go to war while you sit here? Now why will you (AQ)discourage the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord has given them? Thus your fathers did (AR)when I sent them away from Kadesh Barnea (AS)to see the land. For (AT)when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, so that they did not go into the land which the Lord had given them. 10 (AU)So the Lord’s anger was aroused on that day, and He swore an oath, saying, 11 ‘Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, (AV)from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because (AW)they have not wholly followed Me, 12 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun, (AX)for they have wholly followed the Lord.’ 13 So the Lord’s anger was aroused against Israel, and He made them (AY)wander in the wilderness forty years, until (AZ)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone. 14 And look! You have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the (BA)fierce anger of the Lord against Israel. 15 For if you (BB)turn away from following Him, He will once again leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people.”

16 Then they came near to him and said: “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, 17 but (BC)we ourselves will be armed, ready to go before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place; and our little ones will dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 (BD)We will not return to our homes until every one of the children of Israel has [i]received his inheritance. 19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, (BE)because our inheritance has fallen to us on this eastern side of the Jordan.”

20 Then (BF)Moses said to them: “If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before the Lord for the war, 21 and all your armed men cross over the Jordan before the Lord until He has driven out His enemies from before Him, 22 and (BG)the land is subdued before the Lord, then afterward (BH)you may return and be blameless before the Lord and before Israel; and (BI)this land shall be your possession before the Lord. 23 But if you do not do so, then take note, you have sinned against the Lord; and be sure (BJ)your sin will find you out. 24 (BK)Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do [j]what has proceeded out of your mouth.”

25 And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying: “Your servants will do as my lord commands. 26 (BL)Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our livestock will be there in the cities of Gilead; 27 (BM)but your servants will cross over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, just as my lord says.”

28 So Moses gave command (BN)concerning them to Eleazar the priest, to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel. 29 And Moses said to them: “If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben cross over the Jordan with you, every man armed for battle before the Lord, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession. 30 But if they do not cross over armed with you, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”

31 Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying: “As the Lord has said to your servants, so we will do. 32 We will cross over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, but the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us on this side of the Jordan.”

33 So (BO)Moses gave to the children of Gad, to the children of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, (BP)the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land with its cities within the borders, the cities of the surrounding country. 34 And the children of Gad built (BQ)Dibon and Ataroth and (BR)Aroer, 35 Atroth and Shophan and (BS)Jazer and Jogbehah, 36 (BT)Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, (BU)fortified cities, and folds for sheep. 37 And the children of Reuben built (BV)Heshbon and Elealeh and Kirjathaim, 38 (BW)Nebo and (BX)Baal Meon (BY)(their names being changed) and Shibmah; and they gave other names to the cities which they built.

39 And the children of (BZ)Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and [k]dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. 40 So Moses (CA)gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he dwelt in it. 41 Also (CB)Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its small towns, and called them (CC)Havoth Jair.[l] 42 Then Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah, after his own name.

When a man makes a vow to the Lord or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said.(A)

“When a young woman still living in her father’s household makes a vow to the Lord or obligates herself by a pledge and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all her vows and every pledge by which she obligated herself will stand.(B) But if her father forbids her(C) when he hears about it, none of her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand; the Lord will release her because her father has forbidden her.

“If she marries after she makes a vow(D) or after her lips utter a rash promise by which she obligates herself and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her, then her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. But if her husband(E) forbids her when he hears about it, he nullifies the vow that obligates her or the rash promise by which she obligates herself, and the Lord will release her.(F)

“Any vow or obligation taken by a widow or divorced woman will be binding on her.

10 “If a woman living with her husband makes a vow or obligates herself by a pledge under oath 11 and her husband hears about it but says nothing to her and does not forbid her, then all her vows or the pledges by which she obligated herself will stand. 12 But if her husband nullifies them when he hears about them, then none of the vows or pledges that came from her lips will stand.(G) Her husband has nullified them, and the Lord will release her. 13 Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow she makes or any sworn pledge to deny herself.[a] 14 But if her husband says nothing to her about it from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or the pledges binding on her. He confirms them by saying nothing to her when he hears about them. 15 If, however, he nullifies them(H) some time after he hears about them, then he must bear the consequences of her wrongdoing.”

16 These are the regulations the Lord gave Moses concerning relationships between a man and his wife, and between a father and his young daughter still living at home.

Vengeance on the Midianites

31 The Lord said to Moses, “Take vengeance on the Midianites(I) for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.(J)

So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance(K) on them. Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.” So twelve thousand men armed for battle,(L) a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. Moses sent them into battle,(M) a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas(N) son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary(O) and the trumpets(P) for signaling.

They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses,(Q) and killed every man.(R) Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(S)—the five kings of Midian.(T) They also killed Balaam son of Beor(U) with the sword.(V) The Israelites captured the Midianite women(W) and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.(X) 10 They burned(Y) all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps.(Z) 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals,(AA) 12 and brought the captives, spoils(AB) and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly(AC) at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.(AD)

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army(AE)—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice(AF) and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident,(AG) so that a plague(AH) struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man,(AI) 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

19 “Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed(AJ) must stay outside the camp seven days.(AK) On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves(AL) and your captives. 20 Purify every garment(AM) as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.(AN)

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle,(AO) “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron,(AP) tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire,(AQ) and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing.(AR) And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean.(AS) Then you may come into the camp.(AT)

Dividing the Spoils

25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads(AU) of the community are to count all the people(AV) and animals that were captured.(AW) 27 Divide(AX) the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord(AY) one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep. 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part. 30 From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.(AZ) 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

32 The plunder remaining from the spoils(BA) that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, 33 72,000 cattle, 34 61,000 donkeys 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.

36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:

337,500 sheep, 37 of which the tribute for the Lord(BB) was 675;

38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;

39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;

40 16,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.

41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part,(BC) as the Lord commanded Moses.(BD)

42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men— 43 the community’s half—was 337,500 sheep, 44 36,000 cattle, 45 30,500 donkeys 46 and 16,000 people. 47 From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.

48 Then the officers(BE) who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses 49 and said to him, “Your servants have counted(BF) the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing.(BG) 50 So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves(BH) before the Lord.”

51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold—all the crafted articles. 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.[b] 53 Each soldier had taken plunder(BI) for himself. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting(BJ) as a memorial(BK) for the Israelites before the Lord.

The Transjordan Tribes

32 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks,(BL) saw that the lands of Jazer(BM) and Gilead(BN) were suitable for livestock.(BO) So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community,(BP) and said, “Ataroth,(BQ) Dibon,(BR) Jazer,(BS) Nimrah,(BT) Heshbon,(BU) Elealeh,(BV) Sebam,(BW) Nebo(BX) and Beon(BY) the land the Lord subdued(BZ) before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock,(CA) and your servants have livestock. If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.(CB)

Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, “Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here? Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the Lord has given them?(CC) This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.(CD) After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol(CE) and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them. 10 The Lord’s anger was aroused(CF) that day and he swore this oath:(CG) 11 ‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more(CH) when they came up out of Egypt(CI) will see the land I promised on oath(CJ) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(CK) 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’(CL) 13 The Lord’s anger burned against Israel(CM) and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.(CN)

14 “And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel.(CO) 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.(CP)

16 Then they came up to him and said, “We would like to build pens(CQ) here for our livestock(CR) and cities for our women and children. 17 But we will arm ourselves for battle[c] and go ahead of the Israelites(CS) until we have brought them to their place.(CT) Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance.(CU) 19 We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance(CV) has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”(CW)

20 Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle(CX) 21 and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven his enemies out before him(CY) 22 then when the land is subdued before the Lord, you may return(CZ) and be free from your obligation to the Lord and to Israel. And this land will be your possession(DA) before the Lord.(DB)

23 “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.(DC) 24 Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks,(DD) but do what you have promised.(DE)

25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “We your servants will do as our lord commands.(DF) 26 Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead.(DG) 27 But your servants, every man who is armed for battle, will cross over to fight(DH) before the Lord, just as our lord says.”

28 Then Moses gave orders about them(DI) to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun(DJ) and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.(DK) 29 He said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you,(DL) you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession.(DM) 30 But if they do not cross over(DN) with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan.(DO)

31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the Lord has said.(DP) 32 We will cross over before the Lord into Canaan armed,(DQ) but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.(DR)

33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites,(DS) the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh(DT) son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites(DU) and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan(DV)—the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.(DW)

34 The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,(DX) 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer,(DY) Jogbehah,(DZ) 36 Beth Nimrah(EA) and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.(EB) 37 And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon,(EC) Elealeh(ED) and Kiriathaim,(EE) 38 as well as Nebo(EF) and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah.(EG) They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.

39 The descendants of Makir(EH) son of Manasseh went to Gilead,(EI) captured it and drove out the Amorites(EJ) who were there. 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites,(EK) the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. 41 Jair,(EL) a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.[d](EM) 42 And Nobah captured Kenath(EN) and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah(EO) after himself.(EP)

Jeremiah Called to Be a Priest

The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were (A)in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of the Lord came in the days of (B)Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, (C)in the thirteenth year of his reign. It came also in the days of (D)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, (E)until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, (F)until the carrying away of Jerusalem captive (G)in the fifth month.

The Prophet Is Called

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

“Before I (H)formed you in the womb (I)I knew you;
Before you were born I (J)sanctified[a] you;
I [b]ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

Then said I:

(K)“Ah, Lord God!
Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”

But the Lord said to me:

“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
For you shall go to all to whom I send you,
And (L)whatever I command you, you shall speak.
(M)Do not be afraid of their faces,
For (N)I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord.

Then the Lord put forth His hand and (O)touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me:

“Behold, I have (P)put My words in your mouth.
10 (Q)See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms,
To (R)root out and to pull down,
To destroy and to throw down,
To build and to plant.”

11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?”

And I said, “I see a [c]branch of an almond tree.”

12 Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am [d]ready to perform My word.”

13 And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?”

And I said, “I see (S)a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north.”

14 Then the Lord said to me:

“Out of the (T)north calamity shall break forth
On all the inhabitants of the land.
15 For behold, I am (U)calling
All the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the Lord;
“They shall come and (V)each one set his throne
At the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem,
Against all its walls all around,
And against all the cities of Judah.
16 I will utter My judgments
Against them concerning all their wickedness,
Because (W)they have forsaken Me,
Burned (X)incense to other gods,
And worshiped the works of their own (Y)hands.

17 “Therefore (Z)prepare yourself and arise,
And speak to them all that I command you.
(AA)Do not be dismayed before their faces,
Lest I dismay you before them.
18 For behold, I have made you this day
(AB)A fortified city and an iron pillar,
And bronze walls against the whole land—
Against the kings of Judah,
Against its princes,
Against its priests,
And against the people of the land.
19 They will fight against you,
But they shall not prevail against you.
For I am with you,” says the Lord, “to deliver you.”

God’s Case Against Israel

Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord:

“I remember you,
The kindness of your (AC)youth,
The love of your betrothal,
(AD)When you [e]went after Me in the wilderness,
In a land not sown.
(AE)Israel was holiness to the Lord,
(AF)The firstfruits of His increase.
(AG)All that devour him will offend;
Disaster will (AH)come upon them,” says the Lord.’ ”

The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth(A) in the territory of Benjamin. The word of the Lord came(B) to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah(C) son of Amon king of Judah, and through the reign of Jehoiakim(D) son of Josiah king of Judah, down to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah(E) son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile.(F)

The Call of Jeremiah

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb(G) I knew[a](H) you,
before you were born(I) I set you apart;(J)
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.(K)

“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak;(L) I am too young.”(M)

But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid(N) of them, for I am with you(O) and will rescue(P) you,” declares the Lord.(Q)

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched(R) my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.(S) 10 See, today I appoint you over nations(T) and kingdoms to uproot(U) and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”(V)

11 The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”(W)

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

12 The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching[b](X) to see that my word is fulfilled.”

13 The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”(Y)

“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”

14 The Lord said to me, “From the north(Z) disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. 15 I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.

“Their kings will come and set up their thrones
    in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem;
they will come against all her surrounding walls
and against all the towns of Judah.(AA)
16 I will pronounce my judgments(AB) on my people
because of their wickedness(AC) in forsaking me,(AD)
in burning incense to other gods(AE)
and in worshiping(AF) what their hands have made.(AG)

17 “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say(AH) to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified(AI) by them, or I will terrify you before them. 18 Today I have made you(AJ) a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. 19 They will fight against you but will not overcome(AK) you, for I am with you(AL) and will rescue(AM) you,” declares the Lord.

Israel Forsakes God

The word(AN) of the Lord came to me: “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem:

“This is what the Lord says:

“‘I remember the devotion of your youth,(AO)
how as a bride you loved me
and followed me through the wilderness,(AP)
    through a land not sown.
Israel was holy(AQ) to the Lord,(AR)
    the firstfruits(AS) of his harvest;
all who devoured(AT) her were held guilty,(AU)
    and disaster overtook them,’”
declares the Lord.

  2. Jeremiah 1:12 The Hebrew for watching sounds like the Hebrew for almond tree.

But (A)what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss (B)for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having (C)my own righteousness, which is from the law, but (D)that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the (E)power of His resurrection, and (F)the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may (G)attain[a] to the resurrection from the dead.

Pressing Toward the Goal

12 Not that I have already (H)attained,[b] or am already (I)perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have [c]apprehended; but one thing I do, (J)forgetting those things which are behind and (K)reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 (L)I press toward the goal for the prize of (M)the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Therefore let us, as many as are (N)mature, (O)have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, (P)God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already [d]attained, (Q)let us walk (R)by the same [e]rule, let us be of the same mind.

Our Citizenship in Heaven

17 Brethren, (S)join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as (T)you have us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are (U)the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 (V)whose end is destruction, (W)whose god is their belly, and (X)whose glory is in their shame—(Y)who set their mind on earthly things. 20 For (Z)our citizenship is in heaven, (AA)from which we also (AB)eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 (AC)who will transform our lowly body that it may be (AD)conformed to His glorious body, (AE)according to the working by which He is able even to (AF)subdue all things to Himself.

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss(A) for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing(B) Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ(C) and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,(D) but that which is through faith in[a] Christ—the righteousness(E) that comes from God on the basis of faith.(F) 10 I want to know(G) Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings,(H) becoming like him in his death,(I) 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection(J) from the dead.

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal,(K) but I press on to take hold(L) of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.(M) 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind(N) and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on(O) toward the goal to win the prize(P) for which God has called(Q) me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Following Paul’s Example

15 All of us, then, who are mature(R) should take such a view of things.(S) And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.(T) 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

17 Join together in following my example,(U) brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.(V) 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears,(W) many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.(X) 19 Their destiny(Y) is destruction, their god is their stomach,(Z) and their glory is in their shame.(AA) Their mind is set on earthly things.(AB) 20 But our citizenship(AC) is in heaven.(AD) And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,(AE) 21 who, by the power(AF) that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies(AG) so that they will be like his glorious body.(AH)
