52 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 53 (A)“Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names. 54 (B)To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance in proportion to its list. 55 But the land shall be (C)divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. 56 Their inheritance shall be divided according to lot between the larger and the smaller.”

57 (D)This was the list of the Levites according to their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; of Merari, the clan of the Merarites. 58 These are the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. And Kohath was the father of Amram. 59 The name of Amram's wife was (E)Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister. 60 (F)And to Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61 (G)But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. 62 And those listed were (H)23,000, every male from a month old and upward. For (I)they were not listed among the people of Israel, because (J)there was no inheritance given to them among the people of Israel.

63 These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel (K)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 (L)But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said of them, (M)“They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, (N)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

The Daughters of Zelophehad

27 Then drew near the daughters of (O)Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the chiefs and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, “Our father (P)died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord (Q)in the company of Korah, but (R)died for his own sin. And he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? (S)Give to us a possession among our father's brothers.”

Moses (T)brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, “The daughters of Zelophehad (U)are right. (V)You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest (W)kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel (X)a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Go up into (Y)this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you also (Z)shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 (AA)because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing (AB)to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are (AC)the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) 15 Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 “Let the Lord, (AD)the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation 17 who (AE)shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be (AF)as sheep that have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take (AG)Joshua the son of Nun, a man (AH)in whom is the Spirit, and (AI)lay your hand on him. 19 Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall (AJ)commission him in their sight. 20 You shall invest him with some of your authority, (AK)that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. 21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (AL)by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.” 22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23 and he laid his hands on him and (AM)commissioned him as the Lord directed through Moses.

Daily Offerings

28 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the people of Israel and say to them, ‘My offering, (AN)my food for my food offerings, my (AO)pleasing aroma, you shall be careful to offer to me at its appointed time.’ (AP)And you shall say to them, This is the food offering that you shall offer to the Lord: two male lambs a year old without blemish, day by day, as a regular offering. The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight; also (AQ)a tenth of an ephah[a] of fine flour for (AR)a grain offering, mixed (AS)with a quarter of a hin[b] of beaten oil. It is a (AT)regular burnt offering, which was ordained at Mount Sinai for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord. Its drink offering shall be a quarter of a hin for each lamb. In the Holy Place you shall pour out a drink offering of strong drink to the Lord. The other lamb you shall offer at twilight. Like the grain offering of the morning, and like its drink offering, you shall offer it as a food offering, with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

Sabbath Offerings

“On the Sabbath day, two male lambs a year old without blemish, and two tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, and its drink offering: 10 this is (AU)the burnt offering of every Sabbath, besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

Monthly Offerings

11 (AV)“At the beginnings of your months, you shall offer a burnt offering to the Lord: two bulls from the herd, one ram, seven male lambs a year old without blemish; 12 also (AW)three tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for each bull, and two tenths of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, for the one ram; 13 and a tenth of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering for every lamb; for a burnt offering with a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord. 14 Their drink offerings shall be half a hin of wine for a bull, a third of a hin for a ram, and a quarter of a hin for a lamb. This is the burnt offering of each month throughout the months of the year. 15 Also (AX)one male goat for a sin offering to the Lord; it shall be offered besides the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

  1. Numbers 28:5 An ephah was about 3/5 bushel or 22 liters
  2. Numbers 28:5 A hin was about 4 quarts or 3.5 liters

52 The Lord said to Moses, 53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.(A) 54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number(B) of those listed.(C) 55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot.(D) What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. 56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

57 These were the Levites(E) who were counted by their clans:

through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;

through Kohath, the Kohathite clan;

through Merari, the Merarite clan.

58 These also were Levite clans:

the Libnite clan,

the Hebronite clan,

the Mahlite clan,

the Mushite clan,

the Korahite clan.

(Kohath was the forefather of Amram;(F) 59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed,(G) a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites[a] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses(H) and their sister(I) Miriam.(J) 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(K) 61 But Nadab and Abihu(L) died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)(M)

62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000.(N) They were not counted(O) along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance(P) among them.(Q)

63 These are the ones counted(R) by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab(S) by the Jordan across from Jericho.(T) 64 Not one of them was among those counted(U) by Moses and Aaron(V) the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness,(W) and not one of them was left except Caleb(X) son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.(Y)

Zelophehad’s Daughters(Z)

27 The daughters of Zelophehad(AA) son of Hepher,(AB) the son of Gilead,(AC) the son of Makir,(AD) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses,(AE) Eleazar the priest, the leaders(AF) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting(AG) and said, “Our father died in the wilderness.(AH) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,(AI) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.(AJ) Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

So Moses brought their case(AK) before the Lord,(AL) and the Lord said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance(AM) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.(AN)

“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law(AO) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain(AP) in the Abarim Range(AQ) and see the land(AR) I have given the Israelites.(AS) 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,(AT) as your brother Aaron(AU) was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,(AV) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy(AW) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah(AX) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,(AY) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”(AZ)

18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[b](BA) and lay your hand on him.(BB) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him(BC) in their presence.(BD) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.(BE) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring(BF) of the Urim(BG) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,(BH) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

Daily Offerings

28 The Lord said to Moses, “Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Make sure that you present to me at the appointed time(BI) my food(BJ) offerings, as an aroma pleasing to me.’(BK) Say to them: ‘This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect,(BL) as a regular burnt offering each day.(BM) Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight,(BN) together with a grain offering(BO) of a tenth of an ephah[c] of the finest flour(BP) mixed with a quarter of a hin[d] of oil(BQ) from pressed olives. This is the regular burnt offering(BR) instituted at Mount Sinai(BS) as a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.(BT) The accompanying drink offering(BU) is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink(BV) with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the Lord at the sanctuary.(BW) Offer the second lamb at twilight,(BX) along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you offer in the morning.(BY) This is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(BZ)

Sabbath Offerings

“‘On the Sabbath(CA) day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect,(CB) together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[e](CC) of the finest flour mixed with olive oil.(CD) 10 This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath,(CE) in addition to the regular burnt offering(CF) and its drink offering.

Monthly Offerings

11 “‘On the first of every month,(CG) present to the Lord a burnt offering of two young bulls,(CH) one ram(CI) and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect.(CJ) 12 With each bull there is to be a grain offering(CK) of three-tenths of an ephah[f](CL) of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, a grain offering of two-tenths(CM) of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; 13 and with each lamb, a grain offering(CN) of a tenth(CO) of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil. This is for a burnt offering,(CP) a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.(CQ) 14 With each bull there is to be a drink offering(CR) of half a hin[g] of wine; with the ram, a third of a hin[h]; and with each lamb, a quarter of a hin. This is the monthly burnt offering to be made at each new moon(CS) during the year. 15 Besides the regular burnt offering(CT) with its drink offering, one male goat(CU) is to be presented to the Lord as a sin offering.[i](CV)

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

In the fifteenth year of the reign of (A)Tiberius Caesar, (B)Pontius Pilate (C)being governor of Judea, and (D)Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during (E)the high priesthood of Annas and (F)Caiaphas, (G)the word of God came to (H)John the son of Zechariah in (I)the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming (J)a baptism of repentance (K)for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in (L)the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

(M)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(N)‘Prepare the way of the Lord,[a]
    make his paths straight.
(O)Every valley shall be filled,
(P)and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
(Q)and the crooked shall become straight,
and the rough places shall become level ways,
(R)and all flesh shall see (S)the salvation of God.’”

He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, (T)“You brood of (U)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (V)the wrath to come? Bear fruits (W)in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, (X)‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from (Y)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (Z)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds asked him, (AA)“What then shall we do?” 11 And he answered them, (AB)“Whoever has two tunics[b] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” 12 (AC)Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, (AD)what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, (AE)“Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, (AF)what shall we do?” And he said to them, (AG)“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your (AH)wages.”

15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, (AI)whether he might be (AJ)the Christ, 16 (AK)John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but (AL)he who is mightier than I is coming, (AM)the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you (AN)with the Holy Spirit and (AO)fire. 17 His (AP)winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to (AQ)gather the wheat into his barn, (AR)but the chaff he will burn with (AS)unquenchable fire.”

18 So (AT)with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But (AU)Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that (AV)he locked up John in prison.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when (AW)Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, (AX)the heavens were opened, 22 and (AY)the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and (AZ)a voice came from heaven, (BA)“You are my beloved Son;[c] with you I am well pleased.”[d]

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)(B)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)

10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)

The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus(AA)(AB)

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying,(AC) heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him(AD) in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(AE) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(AF)
