Baal Worship at Peor
25 While Israel lived in (A)Shittim, (B)the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. 2 (C)These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. 4 And the Lord said to Moses, (D)“Take all the chiefs of the people and (E)hang[a] them in the sun before the Lord, (F)that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” 5 And Moses said to (G)the judges of Israel, (H)“Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor.”
6 And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were (I)weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. 7 (J)When Phinehas (K)the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand 8 and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. 9 Nevertheless, (L)those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
The Zeal of Phinehas
10 And the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he (M)was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in (N)my jealousy. 12 Therefore say, (O)‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace, 13 and it shall be to him and to (P)his descendants after him the covenant of (Q)a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.’”
14 The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father's house belonging to the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of (R)Zur, who was the tribal head of a father's house in Midian.
16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 (S)“Harass the Midianites and strike them down, 18 for they have harassed you with their (T)wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of (U)Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor.”
Census of the New Generation
26 (V)After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest, 2 (W)“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.” 3 And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them (X)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, 4 “Take a census of the people,[b] from twenty years old and upward,” as the Lord (Y)commanded Moses. The people of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were:
5 (Z)Reuben, the firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; 6 of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. 7 These are the clans of the Reubenites, and those listed were (AA)43,730. 8 And the sons of Pallu: Eliab. 9 The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram, (AB)chosen from the congregation, who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they contended against the Lord 10 and (AC)the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died, when the fire devoured 250 men, and (AD)they became a warning. 11 But (AE)the sons of Korah did not die.
12 The sons of (AF)Simeon according to their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites; 13 of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites. 14 These are the clans of the Simeonites, (AG)22,200.
15 The sons of (AH)Gad according to their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites; 16 of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; of Eri, the clan of the Erites; 17 of Arod, the clan of the Arodites; of Areli, the clan of the Arelites. 18 These are the clans of the sons of Gad as they were listed, (AI)40,500.
19 The sons of (AJ)Judah were Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. 20 And the sons of Judah according to their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites. 21 And the sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites. 22 These are the clans of Judah as they were listed, (AK)76,500.
23 The sons of (AL)Issachar according to their clans: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the clan of the Punites; 24 of Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites. 25 These are the clans of Issachar as they were listed, (AM)64,300.
26 The sons of (AN)Zebulun, according to their clans: of Sered, the clan of the Seredites; of Elon, the clan of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites. 27 These are the clans of the Zebulunites as they were listed, (AO)60,500.
28 The sons of (AP)Joseph according to their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim. 29 (AQ)The sons of Manasseh: of (AR)Machir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir was the father of Gilead; (AS)of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites. 30 These are the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; of Helek, the clan of the Helekites; 31 and of Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites; and of Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites; 32 and of Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites. 33 Now (AT)Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 34 These are the clans of Manasseh, and those listed were (AU)52,700.

Moab Seduces Israel
25 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(A) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(B) with Moabite(C) women,(D) 2 who invited them to the sacrifices(E) to their gods.(F) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to(G) the Baal of Peor.(H) And the Lord’s anger burned against them.
4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders(I) of these people, kill them and expose(J) them in broad daylight before the Lord,(K) so that the Lord’s fierce anger(L) may turn away from Israel.”
5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death(M) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”(N)
6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(O) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(P) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas(Q) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(R) in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(S) 9 but those who died in the plague(T) numbered 24,000.(U)
10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(V) Since he was as zealous for my honor(W) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(X) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(Y) because he was zealous(Z) for the honor(AA) of his God and made atonement(AB) for the Israelites.”(AC)
14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(AD) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(AE) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(AF) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(AG)
16 The Lord said to Moses,(AH) 17 “Treat the Midianites(AI) as enemies(AJ) and kill them.(AK) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(AL) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
The Second Census
26 After the plague(AM) the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, 2 “Take a census(AN) of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army(AO) of Israel.” 3 So on the plains of Moab(AP) by the Jordan across from Jericho,(AQ) Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, 4 “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”
These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:(AR)
5 The descendants of Reuben,(AS) the firstborn son of Israel, were:
through Hanok,(AT) the Hanokite clan;
through Pallu,(AU) the Palluite clan;
6 through Hezron,(AV) the Hezronite clan;
through Karmi,(AW) the Karmite clan.
7 These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.
8 The son of Pallu was Eliab, 9 and the sons of Eliab(AX) were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. The same Dathan and Abiram were the community(AY) officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord.(AZ) 10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them(BA) along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men.(BB) And they served as a warning sign.(BC) 11 The line of Korah,(BD) however, did not die out.(BE)
12 The descendants of Simeon by their clans were:
through Nemuel,(BF) the Nemuelite clan;
through Jamin,(BG) the Jaminite clan;
through Jakin, the Jakinite clan;
13 through Zerah,(BH) the Zerahite clan;
through Shaul, the Shaulite clan.
14 These were the clans of Simeon;(BI) those numbered were 22,200.(BJ)
15 The descendants of Gad by their clans were:
through Zephon,(BK) the Zephonite clan;
through Haggi, the Haggite clan;
through Shuni, the Shunite clan;
16 through Ozni, the Oznite clan;
through Eri, the Erite clan;
17 through Arodi,[a] the Arodite clan;
through Areli, the Arelite clan.
18 These were the clans of Gad;(BL) those numbered were 40,500.
19 Er(BM) and Onan(BN) were sons of Judah, but they died(BO) in Canaan.
20 The descendants of Judah by their clans were:
through Shelah,(BP) the Shelanite clan;
through Perez,(BQ) the Perezite clan;
through Zerah, the Zerahite clan.(BR)
21 The descendants of Perez(BS) were:
through Hezron,(BT) the Hezronite clan;
through Hamul, the Hamulite clan.
22 These were the clans of Judah;(BU) those numbered were 76,500.
23 The descendants of Issachar by their clans were:
through Tola,(BV) the Tolaite clan;
through Puah, the Puite[b] clan;
24 through Jashub,(BW) the Jashubite clan;
through Shimron, the Shimronite clan.
25 These were the clans of Issachar;(BX) those numbered were 64,300.
26 The descendants of Zebulun(BY) by their clans were:
through Sered, the Seredite clan;
through Elon, the Elonite clan;
through Jahleel, the Jahleelite clan.
27 These were the clans of Zebulun;(BZ) those numbered were 60,500.
28 The descendants of Joseph(CA) by their clans through Manasseh and Ephraim(CB) were:
29 The descendants of Manasseh:(CC)
through Makir,(CD) the Makirite clan (Makir was the father of Gilead(CE));
through Gilead, the Gileadite clan.
30 These were the descendants of Gilead:(CF)
through Iezer,(CG) the Iezerite clan;
through Helek, the Helekite clan;
31 through Asriel, the Asrielite clan;
through Shechem, the Shechemite clan;
32 through Shemida, the Shemidaite clan;
through Hepher, the Hepherite clan.
33 (Zelophehad(CH) son of Hepher had no sons;(CI) he had only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah.)(CJ)
34 These were the clans of Manasseh; those numbered were 52,700.(CK)

Ephraim
20 The descendants of Ephraim:(A)
Shuthelah, Bered his son,
Tahath his son, Eleadah his son,
Tahath his son, 21 Zabad his son
and Shuthelah his son.
Ezer and Elead were killed by the native-born men of Gath, when they went down to seize their livestock. 22 Their father Ephraim mourned for them many days, and his relatives came to comfort him. 23 Then he made love to his wife again, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. He named him Beriah,[a] because there had been misfortune in his family. 24 His daughter was Sheerah, who built Lower and Upper Beth Horon(B) as well as Uzzen Sheerah.
25 Rephah was his son, Resheph his son,[b]
Telah his son, Tahan his son,
26 Ladan his son, Ammihud his son,
Elishama his son, 27 Nun his son
and Joshua his son.
28 Their lands and settlements included Bethel and its surrounding villages, Naaran to the east, Gezer(C) and its villages to the west, and Shechem and its villages all the way to Ayyah and its villages. 29 Along the borders of Manasseh were Beth Shan,(D) Taanach, Megiddo and Dor,(E) together with their villages. The descendants of Joseph son of Israel lived in these towns.

52 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 53 (J)“Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names. 54 (K)To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance in proportion to its list. 55 But the land shall be (L)divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. 56 Their inheritance shall be divided according to lot between the larger and the smaller.”
57 (M)This was the list of the Levites according to their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; of Merari, the clan of the Merarites. 58 These are the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. And Kohath was the father of Amram. 59 The name of Amram's wife was (N)Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister. 60 (O)And to Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 61 (P)But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. 62 And those listed were (Q)23,000, every male from a month old and upward. For (R)they were not listed among the people of Israel, because (S)there was no inheritance given to them among the people of Israel.
63 These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel (T)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 (U)But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said of them, (V)“They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, (W)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

52 The Lord said to Moses, 53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names.(M) 54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number(N) of those listed.(O) 55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot.(P) What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. 56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”
57 These were the Levites(Q) who were counted by their clans:
through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;
through Kohath, the Kohathite clan;
through Merari, the Merarite clan.
58 These also were Levite clans:
the Libnite clan,
the Hebronite clan,
the Mahlite clan,
the Mushite clan,
the Korahite clan.
(Kohath was the forefather of Amram;(R) 59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed,(S) a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites[c] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses(T) and their sister(U) Miriam.(V) 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.(W) 61 But Nadab and Abihu(X) died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)(Y)
62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000.(Z) They were not counted(AA) along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance(AB) among them.(AC)
63 These are the ones counted(AD) by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab(AE) by the Jordan across from Jericho.(AF) 64 Not one of them was among those counted(AG) by Moses and Aaron(AH) the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness,(AI) and not one of them was left except Caleb(AJ) son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.(AK)
