Balaam's Third Oracle

24 When Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not go, as at (A)other times, to look for omens, but set his face toward the wilderness. And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel (B)camping tribe by tribe. And (C)the Spirit of God came upon him, and he (D)took up his discourse and said,

“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
    the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,[a]
the oracle of him who hears the words of God,
    who sees the vision of the Almighty,
    (E)falling down with his eyes uncovered:
How lovely are your tents, O Jacob,
    your encampments, O Israel!
Like palm groves[b] that stretch afar,
    like gardens beside a river,
(F)like aloes (G)that the Lord has planted,
    like cedar trees beside the waters.
Water shall flow from his buckets,
    and his seed shall be (H)in many waters;
his king shall be higher than (I)Agag,
    and (J)his kingdom shall be exalted.
God brings him out of Egypt
    and is for him like the (K)horns of the wild ox;
he shall (L)eat up the nations, his adversaries,
    and shall (M)break their bones in pieces
    and (N)pierce them through with his arrows.
He crouched, he lay down like a lion
    and (O)like a lioness; who will rouse him up?
(P)Blessed are those who bless you,
    and cursed are those who curse you.”

10 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he (Q)struck his hands together. And Balak said to Balaam, (R)“I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them these three times. 11 Therefore now flee to your own place. I said, (S)‘I will certainly honor you,’ but the Lord has held you back from honor.” 12 And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, 13 (T)‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord, to do either good or bad (U)of my own will. What the Lord speaks, that will I speak’? 14 And now, behold, I am going to my people. Come, (V)I will let you know what this people will do to your people (W)in the latter days.”

Balaam's Final Oracle

15 (X)And he took up his discourse and said,

“The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor,
    the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,
16 the oracle of him who hears the words of God,
    and knows the knowledge of (Y)the Most High,
who sees the vision of the Almighty,
    (Z)falling down with his eyes uncovered:
17 (AA)I see him, but not now;
    I behold him, but not near:
(AB)a star shall come out of Jacob,
    and (AC)a scepter shall rise out of Israel;
it shall (AD)crush the forehead[c] of Moab
    and break down all the sons of Sheth.
18 (AE)Edom shall be dispossessed;
    (AF)Seir also, his enemies, shall be dispossessed.
    Israel is doing valiantly.
19 And one from Jacob shall exercise dominion
    and destroy the survivors of cities!”

20 Then he looked on Amalek and (AG)took up his discourse and said,

“Amalek was the first among the nations,
    (AH)but its end is utter destruction.”

21 And he looked on the Kenite, and took up his discourse and said,

“Enduring is your dwelling place,
    and your nest is set in the rock.
22 Nevertheless, Kain shall be burned
    when Asshur takes you away captive.”

23 And he took up his discourse and said,

“Alas, who shall live when God does this?
24     But ships shall come from (AI)Kittim
and shall afflict Asshur and (AJ)Eber;
    and he too (AK)shall come to utter destruction.”

25 Then Balaam rose and (AL)went back to his place. And Balak also went his way.

Baal Worship at Peor

25 While Israel lived in (AM)Shittim, (AN)the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab. (AO)These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. And the Lord said to Moses, (AP)“Take all the chiefs of the people and (AQ)hang[d] them in the sun before the Lord, (AR)that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.” And Moses said to (AS)the judges of Israel, (AT)“Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor.”

And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were (AU)weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting. (AV)When Phinehas (AW)the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped. Nevertheless, (AX)those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

The Zeal of Phinehas

10 And the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he (AY)was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in (AZ)my jealousy. 12 Therefore say, (BA)‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace, 13 and it shall be to him and to (BB)his descendants after him the covenant of (BC)a perpetual priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the people of Israel.’”

14 The name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of a father's house belonging to the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of (BD)Zur, who was the tribal head of a father's house in Midian.

16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 17 (BE)“Harass the Midianites and strike them down, 18 for they have harassed you with their (BF)wiles, with which they beguiled you in the matter of (BG)Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague on account of Peor.”

Census of the New Generation

26 (BH)After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron, the priest, (BI)“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' houses, all in Israel who are able to go to war.” And Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them (BJ)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, “Take a census of the people,[e] from twenty years old and upward,” as the Lord (BK)commanded Moses. 52 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 53 (CR)“Among these the land shall be divided for inheritance according to the number of names. 54 (CS)To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance; every tribe shall be given its inheritance in proportion to its list. 55 But the land shall be (CT)divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. 56 Their inheritance shall be divided according to lot between the larger and the smaller.”

63 These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel (DB)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 64 (DC)But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the Lord had said of them, (DD)“They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, (DE)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

The Daughters of Zelophehad

27 Then drew near the daughters of (DF)Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the chiefs and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying, “Our father (DG)died in the wilderness. He was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord (DH)in the company of Korah, but (DI)died for his own sin. And he had no sons. Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? (DJ)Give to us a possession among our father's brothers.”

Moses (DK)brought their case before the Lord. And the Lord said to Moses, “The daughters of Zelophehad (DL)are right. (DM)You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them. And you shall speak to the people of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest (DN)kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. And it shall be for the people of Israel (DO)a statute and rule, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Go up into (DP)this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I have given to the people of Israel. 13 When you have seen it, you also (DQ)shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 (DR)because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing (DS)to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are (DT)the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) 15 Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, 16 “Let the Lord, (DU)the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation 17 who (DV)shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be (DW)as sheep that have no shepherd.” 18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take (DX)Joshua the son of Nun, a man (DY)in whom is the Spirit, and (DZ)lay your hand on him. 19 Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall (EA)commission him in their sight. 20 You shall invest him with some of your authority, (EB)that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. 21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (EC)by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.” 22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23 and he laid his hands on him and (ED)commissioned him as the Lord directed through Moses.

24 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel,(A) he did not resort to divination(B) as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.(C) When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him(D) and he spoke his message:

“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
    the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,(E)
the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,(F)
    who sees a vision from the Almighty,[a](G)
    who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:

“How beautiful are your tents,(H) Jacob,
    your dwelling places, Israel!

“Like valleys they spread out,
    like gardens beside a river,(I)
like aloes(J) planted by the Lord,
    like cedars beside the waters.(K)
Water will flow from their buckets;
    their seed will have abundant water.

“Their king will be greater than Agag;(L)
    their kingdom will be exalted.(M)

“God brought them out of Egypt;
    they have the strength of a wild ox.
They devour hostile nations
    and break their bones in pieces;(N)
    with their arrows they pierce them.(O)
Like a lion they crouch and lie down,
    like a lioness(P)—who dares to rouse them?

“May those who bless you be blessed(Q)
    and those who curse you be cursed!”(R)

10 Then Balak’s anger burned(S) against Balaam. He struck his hands together(T) and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies,(U) but you have blessed them(V) these three times.(W) 11 Now leave at once and go home!(X) I said I would reward you handsomely,(Y) but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”

12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,(Z) 13 ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord(AA)—and I must say only what the Lord says’?(AB) 14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”(AC)

Balaam’s Fourth Message

15 Then he spoke his message:

“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
    the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16 the prophecy of one who hears the words(AD) of God,
    who has knowledge from the Most High,(AE)
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
    who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:

17 “I see him, but not now;
    I behold him, but not near.(AF)
A star will come out of Jacob;(AG)
    a scepter will rise out of Israel.(AH)
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,(AI)
    the skulls[b](AJ) of[c] all the people of Sheth.[d]
18 Edom(AK) will be conquered;
    Seir,(AL) his enemy, will be conquered,(AM)
    but Israel(AN) will grow strong.
19 A ruler will come out of Jacob(AO)
    and destroy the survivors of the city.”

Balaam’s Fifth Message

20 Then Balaam saw Amalek(AP) and spoke his message:

“Amalek was first among the nations,
    but their end will be utter destruction.”(AQ)

Balaam’s Sixth Message

21 Then he saw the Kenites(AR) and spoke his message:

“Your dwelling place is secure,(AS)
    your nest is set in a rock;
22 yet you Kenites will be destroyed
    when Ashur(AT) takes you captive.”

Balaam’s Seventh Message

23 Then he spoke his message:

“Alas! Who can live when God does this?[e]
24     Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;(AU)
they will subdue Ashur(AV) and Eber,(AW)
    but they too will come to ruin.(AX)

25 Then Balaam(AY) got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.

Moab Seduces Israel

25 While Israel was staying in Shittim,(AZ) the men began to indulge in sexual immorality(BA) with Moabite(BB) women,(BC) who invited them to the sacrifices(BD) to their gods.(BE) The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. So Israel yoked themselves to(BF) the Baal of Peor.(BG) And the Lord’s anger burned against them.

The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders(BH) of these people, kill them and expose(BI) them in broad daylight before the Lord,(BJ) so that the Lord’s fierce anger(BK) may turn away from Israel.”

So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death(BL) those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”(BM)

Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite(BN) woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping(BO) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. When Phinehas(BP) son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear(BQ) in his hand and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;(BR) but those who died in the plague(BS) numbered 24,000.(BT)

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites.(BU) Since he was as zealous for my honor(BV) among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace(BW) with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood,(BX) because he was zealous(BY) for the honor(BZ) of his God and made atonement(CA) for the Israelites.”(CB)

14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman(CC) was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.(CD) 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi(CE) daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.(CF)

16 The Lord said to Moses,(CG) 17 “Treat the Midianites(CH) as enemies(CI) and kill them.(CJ) 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident(CK) involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

The Second Census

26 After the plague(CL) the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, “Take a census(CM) of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army(CN) of Israel.” So on the plains of Moab(CO) by the Jordan across from Jericho,(CP) Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

57 These were the Levites(FC) who were counted by their clans:

through Gershon, the Gershonite clan;

through Merari, the Merarite clan.

58 These also were Levite clans:

Zelophehad’s Daughters(FX)

27 The daughters of Zelophehad(FY) son of Hepher,(FZ) the son of Gilead,(GA) the son of Makir,(GB) the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They came forward and stood before Moses,(GC) Eleazar the priest, the leaders(GD) and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting(GE) and said, “Our father died in the wilderness.(GF) He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord,(GG) but he died for his own sin and left no sons.(GH) Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”

So Moses brought their case(GI) before the Lord,(GJ) and the Lord said to him, “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance(GK) among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.(GL)

“Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law(GM) for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Joshua to Succeed Moses

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain(GN) in the Abarim Range(GO) and see the land(GP) I have given the Israelites.(GQ) 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people,(GR) as your brother Aaron(GS) was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin,(GT) both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy(GU) before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah(GV) Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.)

15 Moses said to the Lord, 16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things,(GW) appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”(GX)

18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[k](GY) and lay your hand on him.(GZ) 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him(HA) in their presence.(HB) 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him.(HC) 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring(HD) of the Urim(HE) before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”

22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him,(HF) as the Lord instructed through Moses.

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

11 (A)The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, (B)seeking from him (C)a sign from heaven (D)to test him. 12 And (E)he sighed deeply (F)in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 And (G)he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod

14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; (H)beware of (I)the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of (J)Herod.”[a] 16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And (K)Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? (L)Do you not yet perceive (M)or understand? (N)Are your hearts hardened? 18 (O)Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke (P)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20 “And (Q)the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21 And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 And they came (R)to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 And (S)he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when (T)he had (U)spit on his eyes and (V)laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then Jesus[b] laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his home, saying, (W)“Do not even enter the village.”

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

27 (X)And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, (Y)“John the Baptist; and others say, (Z)Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, (AA)“You are (AB)the Christ.” 30 (AC)And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

31 (AD)And he began to teach them that (AE)the Son of Man must (AF)suffer many things and (AG)be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and (AH)after three days rise again. 32 And he said this (AI)plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, (AJ)“Get behind me, Satan! For you (AK)are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him (AL)deny himself and (AM)take up his cross and follow me. 35 For (AN)whoever would save his life[c] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake (AO)and the gospel's will save it. 36 (AP)For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37 For (AQ)what can a man give in return for his soul? 38 For (AR)whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this (AS)adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed (AT)when he comes in the glory of his Father with (AU)the holy angels.”

11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.(A) 12 He sighed deeply(B) and said, “Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to it.” 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast(C) of the Pharisees(D) and that of Herod.”(E)

16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”

17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?(F) 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

“Twelve,”(G) they replied.

20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

They answered, “Seven.”(H)

21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”(I)

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida

22 They came to Bethsaida,(J) and some people brought a blind man(K) and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit(L) on the man’s eyes and put his hands on(M) him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

24 He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don’t even go into[a] the village.”

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(N)

27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(O) others say Elijah;(P) and still others, one of the prophets.”

29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”(Q)

30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.(R)

Jesus Predicts His Death(S)

31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man(T) must suffer many things(U) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(V) and that he must be killed(W) and after three days(X) rise again.(Y) 32 He spoke plainly(Z) about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!”(AA) he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

The Way of the Cross

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AB) 35 For whoever wants to save their life[b] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.(AC) 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(AD) will be ashamed of them(AE) when he comes(AF) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
