5-16 These are the men, leaders within their tribes, who were chosen from the community for this work:

17 With the help of these twelve men Moses and Aaron 18 called together the whole community on the first day of the second month and registered all the people by clans and families. The names of all the men twenty years old or older were recorded and counted,

16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders(A) of their ancestral tribes.(B) They were the heads of the clans of Israel.(C)
17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month.(D) The people registered their ancestry(E) by their clans and families,(F) and the men twenty years old or more(G) were listed by name, one by one,
