銀のラッパ
10 1-2 続けて、主はモーセに言いました。「集合と出発の合図用に、銀でラッパを二本作りなさい。 3 二本のラッパが長く鳴ったら、人々が神の幕屋に集まる合図、 4 一本の時は、族長があなたのところに集まる合図としなさい。
5-7 集合と出発の合図は吹き方で区別する。短く鳴ったら、まず幕屋の東側に野営している部族が出発し、次の合図で、南側の部族が出発しなさい。 8 ラッパを吹けるのは祭司だけである。これは代々にわたって守らなければならない。
9 約束の国カナンに着いてから敵と戦う場合、これで非常ラッパを鳴らせば、あなたがたを助けよう。 10 また、毎年行う祭りの時や、焼き尽くすいけにえ、和解のいけにえをささげる月初めの祝いの日にも、ラッパを吹き鳴らしなさい。それを聞いて、あなたがたとの約束を思い出す。わたしはあなたがたの神、主だからだ。」
シナイを発つイスラエル
11 イスラエル人がエジプトを出てから二年目の第二月の二十日に、雲は幕屋を離れて上りました。 12 そこで彼らはシナイの荒野をあとにし、雲に導かれてパランの荒野に向かいました。 13 モーセを通して示された主の命令による、初めての旅でした。
14 先頭はユダ族で、旗を立てアミナダブの子ナフションが率いました。 15 そのあとに続くのは、ツアルの子ネタヌエルが率いるイッサカル族と、 16 ヘロンの子エリアブが率いるゼブルン族です。 17 続いて、レビ族のうちのゲルション族とメラリ族（氏族）が、解体した幕屋をかついで進みました。
18 そのうしろに、旗を先頭にシェデウルの子エリツルが率いるルベン族、 19 ツリシャダイの子シェルミエルが率いるシメオン族、 20 デウエルの子エルヤサフが率いるガド族と続きました。
21 次は、聖所で使う用具を運ぶケハテ族です。こうすれば、彼らが着くまでに幕屋を組み立てておけるのです。 22 そのあとに、アミフデの子エリシャマが率いるエフライム族、 23 ペダツルの子ガムリエルが率いるマナセ族、 24 ギデオニの子アビダンが率いるベニヤミン族が、それぞれの旗を立てて続きました。
25 最後に、それぞれの旗を先頭に、アミシャダイの子アヒエゼルが率いるダン族、 26 オクランの子パグイエルが率いるアシェル族、 27 それに、エナンの息子アヒラが率いるナフタリ族が進みました。 28 これが、イスラエルの各部隊の出立の順序でした。
モーセとホバブ
29 ある日モーセは、しゅうとのミデヤン人レウエルの息子で、義理の兄弟に当たるホバブに言いました。「私たちは、いよいよ約束の地へ出発します。どうです、いっしょに来ませんか。主のすばらしい約束があるのですから、何も心配はいりません。」
30 「せっかくだが、国の家族のもとに帰りたい。」
31 「そう言わず、どうかいっしょに来てください。荒野の道にくわしい人がいてくれると、ほんとうに助かるのです。 32 主が私たちに下さるものは何でもお分けしますから。」
33 こうして一行は、シナイ山を出発してから三日間、旅を続けました。その間、主の契約の箱が先頭になって進み、そうして、彼らは休む場所を探しました。 34 彼らが野営地を出発した時、雲が一行の前を進みました。 35 契約の箱がかつぎ上げられる瞬間、モーセは大声で祈りました。「神様、立ち上がってください。敵をみな、さんざん追い散らしてください！」 36 また、休むために箱が下ろされる時、「ああ神様！ すべてのイスラエルの民のところにお戻りください」と祈りました。

The Silver Trumpets
10 The Lord said to Moses: 2 “Make two trumpets(A) of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community(B) together and for having the camps set out.(C) 3 When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 4 If only one is sounded, the leaders(D)—the heads of the clans of Israel—are to assemble before you. 5 When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out.(E) 6 At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out.(F) The blast will be the signal for setting out. 7 To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets,(G) but not with the signal for setting out.(H)
8 “The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come.(I) 9 When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you,(J) sound a blast on the trumpets.(K) Then you will be remembered(L) by the Lord your God and rescued from your enemies.(M) 10 Also at your times of rejoicing—your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts(N)—you are to sound the trumpets(O) over your burnt offerings(P) and fellowship offerings,(Q) and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the Lord your God.(R)”
The Israelites Leave Sinai
11 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year,(S) the cloud lifted(T) from above the tabernacle of the covenant law.(U) 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.(V) 13 They set out, this first time, at the Lord’s command through Moses.(W)
14 The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard.(X) Nahshon son of Amminadab(Y) was in command. 15 Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe(Z) of Issachar,(AA) 16 and Eliab son of Helon(AB) was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.(AC) 17 Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.(AD)
18 The divisions of the camp of Reuben(AE) went next, under their standard.(AF) Elizur son of Shedeur(AG) was in command. 19 Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon,(AH) 20 and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad.(AI) 21 Then the Kohathites(AJ) set out, carrying the holy things.(AK) The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived.(AL)
22 The divisions of the camp of Ephraim(AM) went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud(AN) was in command. 23 Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh,(AO) 24 and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin.(AP)
25 Finally, as the rear guard(AQ) for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai(AR) was in command. 26 Pagiel son of Okran was over the division of the tribe of Asher,(AS) 27 and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali.(AT) 28 This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.
29 Now Moses said to Hobab(AU) son of Reuel(AV) the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law,(AW) “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’(AX) Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”
30 He answered, “No, I will not go;(AY) I am going back to my own land and my own people.(AZ)”
31 But Moses said, “Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.(BA) 32 If you come with us, we will share with you(BB) whatever good things the Lord gives us.(BC)”
33 So they set out(BD) from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the Lord(BE) went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.(BF) 34 The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.(BG)
35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses said,

11 まもなく、人々が主に対して激しく不平を言い始めました。主はそれを聞いて非常に怒り、野営地を端から焼き払おうとしました。 2 驚いた彼らが、「た、大変だ！ 何とかしてくれ」と叫んだので、モーセが祈ると、火はようやく消えました。 3 その事件があってから、そこはタブエラ（「燃える地」の意）と呼ばれるようになりました。そこで主が、イスラエル人を焼き滅ぼそうとされたからです。

7 マナはコエンドロ（コリアンダー。セリ科の一年草で、夏、白い小さな花をつける）の種ぐらいで、白っぽい樹脂のような色をしていました。 8 それを拾い集め、つぶして粉にするか、臼でつくかしてから、蒸してパンを作るのです。味は油で揚げたパンのようでした。 9 マナは夜の間に露といっしょに降りました。
10 人々がそれぞれ自分の天幕の入口に集まって泣き言を言っているのを聞くと、主はまた憤りを覚えました。モーセも同じでした。 11 モーセはとうとう主にぐちをこぼしました。「なぜ、こんなに手のかかる連中の面倒を見させて、私をお苦しめになるのですか。 12 どうして、親子でも何でもないのに、こんな赤ん坊みたいな者たちを、約束の国まで連れて行かなければならないのですか。 13 『肉が欲しい』と泣きつかれても、どこで手に入れたらよいのでしょうか。 14 私ひとりでは手に負えません。荷が重すぎます。 15 これ以上苦しみが続くのでしたら、もうたくさんです。いっそ、今すぐ私を殺してください。」
16 主は答えました。「指導者を七十人選び、幕屋へ連れて来て、あなたといっしょに立たせなさい。 17 わたしはそこであなたと話し、あなたの仕事を手伝えるように、彼らにもあなたと同じ霊の力を与えよう。 18 それから、人々に身をきよめるように言いなさい。明日、肉が食べられると言いなさい。『おまえたちが、エジプトに残してきたものを泣くほど恋しがり、不平を言うのを、主はお聞きになった。望みどおり肉を下さるそうだ。 19-20 それも、一日や二日ではない。五日、十日、二十日、いやそれ以上、毎日だ。まる一か月も食べ続ければ吐き気を催し、もう、うんざりだと言うだろう。主がいっしょにおられるのに見向きもせず、泣いてエジプトを恋しがった罰だ。』」
21 モーセは言いました。「ですが主よ、男だけでも六十万人はおります。その全員に一か月分の肉とは！ 22 羊と牛を全部殺しても足りません。海の魚を一匹残らず捕り尽くさないかぎり、とてもそれだけの肉は手に入りません。」
23 「モーセよ。いつからわたしはそんなに弱くなったのか。わたしの言うことがほんとうかどうか、今にわかる。」
24 モーセは幕屋を出て、人々にそのことばを伝えました。それから七十人の長老を集め、幕屋の回りに立たせました。 25 と、どうでしょう。主が雲の中に身を隠して降りて来られ、モーセと話をしているではありませんか。そして主は、モーセに与えた霊の力を長老たちにも与えました。すると、しばらくの間、彼らは預言をしたのです。
26 ところが、エルダデとメダデの二人はその時、野営地内に残っていたのに他の長老たちと同じように預言し始めました。 27 そのことを、一人の若者が走って伝えに来ると、 28 モーセが助手に選んだヌンの子ヨシュアはモーセに、「そんなことはやめさせてください」と抗議しました。
29 「おまえは二人のことをねたんでいるようだ。だが、私は、イスラエル人がみな主の霊を頂き、預言者になってくれたらどんなにいいかと思っているのだ。」 30 こう答えると、モーセは長老たちと共に野営地に帰りました。
31 さて次の日、主が風を起こすと、それに乗って海の向こうからうずらが飛んで来て、野営地の回りに落ちました。どの方向に進んでも、一日の道のりの所にうずらが落ちています。それも九十センチほどの高さに、びっしり敷き詰めたようになっているのです。 32 人々は、その日一日では足りず、夜の間も翌日もずっと、うずらを集めました。一番少ない者でも山ほど集めることができ、それを野営地中に広げて干しました。 33 ところが、その肉を食べ尽くさないうちに主の罰が下り、大ぜいの者が疫病にかかって死にました。 34 それから、この場所は、キブロテ・ハタアワ（「欲望の墓場」の意）と呼ばれるようになりました。人々が肉を欲しがり、エジプトでの生活を恋しがった人々を埋葬したからです。 35 このあと人々はハツェロテまで行き、しばらく滞在しました。

Fire From the Lord
11 Now the people complained(A) about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord,(B) and when he heard them his anger was aroused.(C) Then fire from the Lord burned among them(D) and consumed(E) some of the outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed(F) to the Lord(G) and the fire died down. 3 So that place was called Taberah,[a](H) because fire from the Lord had burned among them.(I)
Quail From the Lord
4 The rabble with them began to crave other food,(J) and again the Israelites started wailing(K) and said, “If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.(L) 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!(M)”
7 The manna was like coriander seed(N) and looked like resin.(O) 8 The people went around gathering it,(P) and then ground it in a hand mill or crushed it in a mortar. They cooked it in a pot or made it into loaves. And it tasted like something made with olive oil. 9 When the dew(Q) settled on the camp at night, the manna also came down.
10 Moses heard the people of every family wailing(R) at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. 11 He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought this trouble(S) on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me?(T) 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant,(U) to the land you promised on oath(V) to their ancestors?(W) 13 Where can I get meat for all these people?(X) They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me.(Y) 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me(Z)—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”
16 The Lord said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders(AA) who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.(AB) Have them come to the tent of meeting,(AC) that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you(AD) there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them.(AE) They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.(AF)
18 “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves(AG) in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed,(AH) “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!”(AI) Now the Lord will give you meat,(AJ) and you will eat it. 19 You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it(AK)—because you have rejected the Lord,(AL) who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”(AM)
21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men(AN) on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’ 22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”(AO)
23 The Lord answered Moses, “Is the Lord’s arm too short?(AP) Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.(AQ)”
24 So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(AR) and spoke with him,(AS) and he took some of the power of the Spirit(AT) that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.(AU) When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied(AV)—but did not do so again.
26 However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them,(AW) and they prophesied in the camp. 27 A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28 Joshua son of Nun,(AX) who had been Moses’ aide(AY) since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”(AZ)
29 But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets(BA) and that the Lord would put his Spirit(BB) on them!”(BC) 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
31 Now a wind went out from the Lord and drove quail(BD) in from the sea. It scattered them up to two cubits[b] deep all around the camp, as far as a day’s walk in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered quail. No one gathered less than ten homers.[c] Then they spread them out all around the camp. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth(BE) and before it could be consumed, the anger(BF) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.(BG) 34 Therefore the place was named Kibroth Hattaavah,[d](BH) because there they buried the people who had craved other food.
35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth(BI) and stayed there.

27 主は私の光、また救いです。
だれを恐れる必要がありましょう。
2 私を亡き者にしようと襲いかかる悪者は、
つまずき倒れます。
3 たとえ大軍が押し寄せようとも、恐れません。
必ず神が救ってくださると信じているからです。
4 私が神にお願いすることは、ただ一つです。
私の求めてやまないものとは、
主の宮で黙想にふけり、
いのちある限り主の前で暮らすこと、
比べようもない、主の麗しさと完全と栄光とを
喜ぶ特権です。
5 悩みの日に、私は宮へ出かけます。
主は私をかくまってくださり、
高い岩の上に座らせて、
6 敵が手出しできないようにしてくださいます。
そのとき、私は主に供え物をささげ、
大喜びで賛美の歌を歌います。
7 私の訴えに耳を傾けてください。

1 The Lord is my light(A) and my salvation(B)—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold(C) of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?(D)
2 When the wicked advance against me
to devour[a] me,
it is my enemies and my foes
who will stumble and fall.(E)
3 Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;(F)
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.(G)
4 One thing(H) I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,(I)
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble(J)

1 神の子イエス・キリストのすばらしい福音（救いの知らせ）の始まりは、こうです。
2 神が地上にご自分のひとり子を遣わされることと、彼を迎える準備のために特別な使者を送られることとは、預言者イザヤがずっと以前に告げていました。 3 「この使者は、不毛の荒野に住み、すべての人に呼びかける。『生活を正せ。主をお迎えする準備をせよ』」（イザヤ40・3）と。
バプテスマのヨハネの働き
4 この使者とは、バプテスマのヨハネのことです。彼は荒野に住み、人々にこう教えました。「罪を赦していただくために、悔い改めて神に立ち返りなさい。そして、そのしるしにバプテスマ（洗礼）を受けるのです。」 5 このヨハネのことばを聞こうと、エルサレムばかりか、ユダヤ全国からおびただしい数の人たちが詰めかけ、次々と今までの自分の悪い思いや行いを神に告白しました。ヨハネはそういう人たちに、ヨルダン川でバプテスマを授けていたのです。 6 らくだの毛で織った着物に、皮の帯、いなごとはちみつが常食という生活を送りながら、 7 彼は次のように宣べ伝えました。
「私よりもはるかにすばらしい方が、もうすぐおいでになります。私など、その方のしもべとなる価値もありません。 8 私はあなたがたに水でバプテスマを授けていますが、その方は聖霊によってバプテスマをお授けになります。」
9 そのころ、イエスもガリラヤのナザレから来て、人々といっしょに、ヨルダン川でヨハネからバプテスマをお受けになりました。 10 ところが、イエスが水から上がられたちょうどその時、天がさっと開け、聖霊が鳩のようにご自分の上に下って来るのが見えました。 11 そして天から、「あなたはわたしの愛する子、わたしはあなたを喜ぶ」という声が聞こえました。
12 このあとすぐ、聖霊はイエスを荒野へ追いやられました。 13 イエスは、そこで四十日間、野の獣たちと共に過ごし、罪を犯させようとするサタンの誘惑をお受けになりました。しかし後には、天使たちがやって来て、イエスに仕えていました。
14 ヨハネがヘロデ王（ヘロデ・アンテパス）の命令で逮捕されると、イエスはガリラヤに行き、神の福音を宣べ伝えました。 15 「いよいよ来るべき時が来ました。神の国が近づいたのです。みな、悔い改めて、福音を信じなさい。」
イエス、弟子を集める
16 ある日、イエスがガリラヤ湖の岸辺を歩いておられると、シモンとアンデレの兄弟が網を打っている姿が目に入りました。二人は漁師でした。
17 イエスは声をおかけになりました。「さあ、ついて来なさい。人間をとる漁師にしてあげましょう。」 18 すると二人はすぐ網を置き、イエスについて行きました。
19 また少し先に行くと、ゼベダイの息子で、同じく漁師のヤコブとヨハネとが舟の中で網を修繕していました。 20 そこで、イエスはこの二人もお呼びになりました。二人とも、父と雇い人たちとを舟に残したまま、イエスについて行きました。
21 さて、一行はカペナウムの町にやって来ました。土曜日の朝、イエスはユダヤ人の礼拝所である会堂へ出かけて、教えられました。 22 それを聞いた会衆は驚きました。イエスの話し方が、これまで聞いてきたものとは全く違っていたからです。イエスは、律法学者たちのようにむやみに他人のことばを用いず、権威をもって話されたからです。
イエス、多くの病人を治す
23 ところが、その会堂に悪霊につかれた人がいて、大声で叫びだしました。 24 「おい、ナザレのイエス！ おれたちをどうしようというんだ。おれたちを滅ぼすために来たんだろう。あんたのことはよく知ってるぜ。そうとも、神の聖なる御子よ！」
25 イエスは悪霊にそれ以上は言わせず、「その人から出て行きなさい！」とお命じになりました。 26 すると悪霊は大声をあげ、その人を激しく引きつけさせて、出て行きました。 27 この有様に会衆は肝をつぶし、興奮して口々に論じ合いました。
「いったい、どうなっているんだ！」
「悪霊どもでさえ、命令を聞くなんて……。」
「これは新しい教えなのかね。」
28 イエスの評判は、たちまちガリラヤの全地方に広まりました。
29 このあと会堂を出た一行は、シモンとアンデレの家に行きました。 30 ところがこの時、シモンのしゅうとめは高熱にうなされて、床についていました。イエスはそれを知ると、 31 さっそく彼女のそばに行き、手を取って起こされました。するとどうでしょう。たちまち熱が下がり、すっかり元気になったしゅうとめは、みんなをもてなすために、食事の用意を始めたのです。
32 日の沈むころになると、シモンの家の庭は、イエスに治していただこうと連れて来られた病人や悪霊につかれた者たちで、いっぱいになりました。 33 また戸口には、カペナウム中の人たちが詰めかけ、がやがや騒ぎながら中の様子をながめていました。 34 イエスはこの時も多くの病人を治し、悪霊を追い出されました。しかも、悪霊にひとことも口をきかせませんでした。悪霊は、イエスがどういう方か知っていたからです。
35 翌朝、イエスは夜明け前に起き、ただひとり、人気のない所へ行って祈られました。 36 そのうちに、あちらこちらとイエスを捜し回っていたシモンたちが来て、 37 「みんなが先生を捜しています」と言いました。 38 イエスは、「さあ、ほかの町へ出かけましょう。そこでも教えなければなりません。わたしはそのために来たのですから」とお答えになりました。
39 こうしてイエスは、ガリラヤ中をくまなく回り、会堂で教え、悪霊につかれた人を大ぜいお助けになりました。
40 ある時、一人のツァラアト（皮膚が冒され、汚れているとされた当時の疾患）に冒された人がやって来て、イエスの前にひざまずき、熱心に頼みました。「お願いでございます。どうか私の体をもとどおりに治してください。先生のお気持ちひとつで治るのですから。」 41 イエスは心からかわいそうに思い、彼にさわって、「そうしてあげましょう。さあ、よくなりなさい」と言われました。 42 するとたちまち、ツァラアトはあとかたもなくなり、完全に治ってしまいました。 43-44 「これからすぐに祭司のところへ行き、体を調べてもらいなさい。途中で寄り道や立ち話をしてはいけません。健康な体に戻ったことを明らかにするために、モーセの命じたとおりの供え物をしなさい。」 45 イエスにきびしく止められたにもかかわらず、男はうれしさを抑えきれず、この出来事を大声でふれ回って歩きました。そのため、イエスの回りにはみるみる人垣ができ、公然と町へ入れなくなりました。しかたなく町はずれにとどまっておられましたが、そこにも、人々が押しかけて来ました。

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)
1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a] the Son of God,[b](B) 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”[c](C)—
3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[d](D)
4 And so John the Baptist(E) appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance(F) for the forgiveness of sins.(G) 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist,(H) and he ate locusts(I) and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.(J) 8 I baptize you with[e] water, but he will baptize you with[f] the Holy Spirit.”(K)
The Baptism and Testing of Jesus(L)(M)
9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth(N) in Galilee and was baptized by John(O) in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.(P) 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(Q) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(R)
12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days,(S) being tempted[g] by Satan.(T) He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
Jesus Announces the Good News(U)
14 After John(V) was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,(W) proclaiming the good news of God.(X) 15 “The time has come,”(Y) he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe(Z) the good news!”(AA)
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.(AB)
19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AC)
21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.(AD) 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.(AE) 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us,(AF) Jesus of Nazareth?(AG) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”(AH)
25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”(AI) 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.(AJ)
27 The people were all so amazed(AK) that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region(AL) of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many(AM)(AN)
29 As soon as they left the synagogue,(AO) they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up.(AP) The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.(AQ) 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases.(AR) He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.(AS)
Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place(AT)
35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.(AU) 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”(AV) 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues(AW) and driving out demons.(AX)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(AY)
40 A man with leprosy[h] came to him and begged him on his knees,(AZ) “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
41 Jesus was indignant.[i] He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone.(BA) But go, show yourself to the priest(BB) and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing,(BC) as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places.(BD) Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.(BE)
