⁶ And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe, together with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the vessels of the sanctuary and ^(A)the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

^44 (A)But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither ^(B)the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed out of the camp.

^8 (A)And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets. The trumpets shall be to you for a perpetual statute throughout your generations. ⁹ And ^(B)when you go to war in your land against the adversary who ^(C)oppresses you, then you shall ^(D)sound an alarm with the trumpets, that you may be ^(E)remembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.

¹² Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests ^(A)with their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you. O sons of Israel, ^(B)do not fight against the Lord, the God of your fathers, for you cannot succeed.”

¹³ Jeroboam had sent ^(C)an ambush around to come upon them from behind. Thus his troops^[a] were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them. ¹⁴ And when Judah looked, behold, the battle was in front of and behind them. ^(D)And they cried to the Lord, and the priests ^(E)blew the trumpets. ¹⁵ Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, ^(F)God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

¹¹ Uriah said to David, ^(A)“The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and ^(B)the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? As you live, and ^(C)as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.”

⁹ David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, ^(A)“Bring the ephod here.”

¹⁸ So Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God here.” For the ark of God went at that time with the people^[a] of Israel.

¹⁷ He who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”

⁴ So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, ^(A)who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

⁵ As soon as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel ^(B)gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded.

¹³ And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of the Lord walked on, and they blew the trumpets continually. And the armed men were walking before them, and the rear guard was walking after the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets blew continually. ¹⁴ And the second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. So they did for six days.
