The Temptation of Jesus

4 (A)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (B)to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had (C)fasted forty days and forty nights, He [a]then became hungry. 3 And (D)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (E)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘(F)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

5 Then the devil *took Him into (G)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,

‘(H)He will command His angels concerning You’;

and

‘On their hands they will bear You up,
Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”

7 Jesus said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘(I)You shall not put the [b]Lord your God to the test.’”

8 (J)Again, the devil *took Him to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; 9 and he said to Him, “(K)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [c]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘(L)You shall worship the [d]Lord your God, and [e]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (M)angels came and began to minister to Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when Jesus heard that (N)John had been taken into custody, (O)He departed into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and (P)lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,

15 “(Q)The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
[f]By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the [g]Gentiles—
16 (R)The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”

17 (S)From that time Jesus began to [h]preach and say, “(T)Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

The First Disciples

18 (U)Now as Jesus was walking by (V)the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, (W)Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, “[i]Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 And going on from there He saw two other brothers, [j](X)James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 And immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Ministry in Galilee

23 And Jesus was going (Y)throughout all Galilee, (Z)teaching in their synagogues and (AA)preaching the [k]gospel of the kingdom, and (AB)healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.

24 And the news about Him spread (AC)throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, (AD)demoniacs, [l](AE)epileptics, (AF)paralytics; and He healed them. 25 And large crowds (AG)followed Him from Galilee and (AH)the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from (AI)beyond the Jordan.

Jesús es puesto a prueba

(Mr 1:12-13; Lc 4:1-13)

4 Luego, el Espíritu llevó a Jesús al desierto para que fuera tentado por el diablo. 2 Después de no comer nada durante 40 días y 40 noches, Jesús tenía mucha hambre. 3 Entonces el diablo[a] vino para ponerlo a prueba y le dijo:

—Si eres Hijo de Dios, diles a estas piedras que se conviertan en pan.

4 (A)Pero Jesús le respondió:

—Está escrito: “No sólo de pan vive el hombre; sino de toda palabra que Dios dice”.[b]

5 Entonces el diablo llevó a Jesús a la ciudad santa y lo puso en lo más alto de un extremo del área del templo, 6 (B)y le dijo:

—Si eres Hijo de Dios, tírate abajo desde aquí porque está escrito:

“Él mandará a sus ángeles
    que te cuiden.
Sus manos te rescatarán
    para que ni siquiera te lastimes los pies contra las piedras”.[c]

7 (C)Jesús le dijo:

—Pero también está escrito: “No pongas a prueba al Señor tu Dios”.[d]

8 Después el diablo llevó a Jesús a una montaña muy alta y le mostró todos los reinos del mundo con toda su grandeza. 9 El diablo le dijo:

—Te daré todo esto si te arrodillas y me adoras.

10 (D)Jesús le dijo:

—¡Largo de aquí Satanás! Porque está escrito: “Adora al Señor tu Dios y sírvele solamente a él”.[e]

11 Entonces el diablo se fue, y los ángeles vinieron a cuidar a Jesús.

Jesús comienza su obra

(Mr 1:14-15; Lc 4:14-15)

12 Cuando Jesús oyó que habían encerrado a Juan en la cárcel, regresó a Galilea. 13 Pero no se quedó viviendo en Nazaret, sino que se fue a vivir a Capernaúm, un pueblo que estaba cerca del lago de Galilea en la región de Zabulón y Neftalí. 14 Esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que dijo Dios a través del profeta Isaías:

15 «Tierras de Zabulón y de Neftalí,
    a la orilla del mar, al otro lado del río Jordán:
    Galilea, de gente extranjera.
16 (E)Esa gente vive en la oscuridad,
    pero han visto una gran luz;
una luz ha brillado para ellos
    que viven en una tierra oscura como la muerte».[f]

17 Desde entonces, Jesús comenzó a anunciar: «Cambien su manera de pensar y de vivir porque el reino de Dios ya está cerca».

Los primeros seguidores

(Mr 1:16-20; Lc 5:1-11)

18 Cuando Jesús caminaba junto al mar de Galilea, vio a dos hermanos: Simón, llamado Pedro, y su hermano Andrés. Estaban lanzando la red para pescar en el lago, pues eran pescadores. 19 Y Jesús les dijo:

—Síganme, y yo les enseñaré a pescar hombres.

20 Inmediatamente ellos dejaron ahí sus redes y lo siguieron. 21 Yendo más adelante, vio a otros dos hermanos: Santiago y Juan, hijos de Zebedeo. Estaban en una barca con el papá arreglando sus redes para pescar. Jesús los llamó 22 e inmediatamente ellos dejaron la barca y a su papá, y siguieron a Jesús.

Jesús enseña y sana a la gente

(Lc 6:17-19)

23 Jesús andaba por toda la región de Galilea, enseñando en las sinagogas y anunciando el mensaje de las buenas noticias del reino. Iba entre la gente sanando toda enfermedad. 24 Su fama se difundió por toda Siria. Le traían a todos los que padecían de diversas enfermedades y a los que sufrían graves dolores. También le traían a los atormentados por algún demonio, a los epilépticos y a los paralíticos, y él los sanaba. 25 Muchísima gente de Galilea, de Decápolis, de Jerusalén, de Judea y del otro lado del río Jordán seguía a Jesús.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a](B) by the devil.(C) 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights,(D) he was hungry. 3 The tempter(E) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,(F) tell these stones to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”(G)

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city(H) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,”(I) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    and they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]”(J)

7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]”(K)

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!(L) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]”(M)

11 Then the devil left him,(N) and angels came and attended him.(O)

Jesus Begins to Preach

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison,(P) he withdrew to Galilee.(Q) 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum,(R) which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill(S) what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
    the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”[f](T)

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(U) has come near.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(V)

18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,(W) he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter(X) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,”(Y) Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.(Z)

21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John.(AA) They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.(AB)

Jesus Heals the Sick

23 Jesus went throughout Galilee,(AC) teaching in their synagogues,(AD) proclaiming the good news(AE) of the kingdom,(AF) and healing every disease and sickness among the people.(AG) 24 News about him spread all over Syria,(AH) and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed,(AI) those having seizures,(AJ) and the paralyzed;(AK) and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[g] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.(AL)
