Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
12 At that time (A)Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and (B)they began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, (C)“Look, your disciples are doing (D)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” 3 He said to them, (E)“Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate (F)the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read (G)in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? 6 I tell you, (H)something greater than the temple is here. 7 And if you had known (I)what this means, (J)‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For (K)the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
9 He went on from there and (L)entered their synagogue. 10 And a man was there with a withered hand. And they asked him, (M)“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—(N)so that they might accuse him. 11 He said to them, “Which one of you who has a sheep, (O)if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 (P)Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So (Q)it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And (R)the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.
God's Chosen Servant
15 Jesus, aware of this, (S)withdrew from there. And (T)many followed him, and he healed them all 16 and (U)ordered them not to make him known. 17 (V)This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah:
18 (W)“Behold, my (X)servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.
(Y)I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel or cry aloud,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets;
20 a bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory;
21 (Z)and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”
Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit
22 (AA)Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. 23 (AB)And all the people were amazed, and said, (AC)“Can this be the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, (AD)“It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” 25 (AE)Knowing their thoughts, (AF)he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. 26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, (AG)by whom do (AH)your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 28 But if it is (AI)by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then (AJ)the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or (AK)how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed (AL)he may plunder his house. 30 (AM)Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31 (AN)Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but (AO)the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 And whoever speaks a word (AP)against the Son of Man (AQ)will be forgiven, but (AR)whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in (AS)this age or in the age to come.
A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit
33 (AT)“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, (AU)for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 (AV)You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, (AW)when you are evil? (AX)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 (AY)The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, (AZ)on the day of judgment (BA)people will give account for (BB)every careless word they speak, 37 for (BC)by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
The Sign of Jonah
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, (BD)we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, (BE)“An evil and (BF)adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For (BG)just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, (BH)so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 (BI)The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and (BJ)condemn it, for (BK)they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, (BL)something greater than Jonah is here. 42 (BM)The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, (BN)something greater than Solomon is here.
Return of an Unclean Spirit
43 “When (BO)the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through (BP)waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and (BQ)the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this (BR)evil generation.”
Jesus' Mother and Brothers
46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, (BS)his mother and his (BT)brothers[a] stood outside, asking to speak to him.[b] 48 But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For (BU)whoever (BV)does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Pharisees watch what Jesus does on the day of rest
12 On a Jewish day of rest, Jesus was walking through some fields where wheat was growing. His disciples were hungry. So they began to pick some of the grains of wheat. They began to eat them. 2 While the disciples were picking the grains, some Pharisees saw them. They said to Jesus, ‘Look at what your disciples are doing! It is against God's Law to do that on our day of rest.’
3 Jesus replied, ‘You have certainly read about what David did one day. He and the men who were with him were hungry. 4 David went into the temple. He ate the special bread that was there. He also gave some of it to his men to eat as well. But it is against God's Law for anyone except the priests to eat that special bread.[a]
5 Also, you certainly know what God's Law says about the priests. They work in the temple, even on the day of rest. They have not obeyed the Law about the day of rest. But God's Law tells us that they have not done anything that is wrong. 6 But I tell you this. There is someone here now who has greater authority even than the temple. 7 You should understand what the Bible teaches. God says there, “I want people to be kind to each other. I do not just want them to offer sacrifices to me.” If you had understood this, then you would not have said to me, “Your disciples are doing something wrong.” 8 The Son of Man has authority over the Law about the day of rest.’
9 Then Jesus left that place. He went into the Jewish meeting place. 10 A man was there. His hand was very small and weak, so he could not use it. Some Pharisees asked Jesus, ‘Is it right to make someone well again on our day of rest?’ They wanted to find a reason to say that Jesus was doing wrong things.
11 Jesus said to them, ‘Maybe one of you has a sheep that falls into a deep hole on our day of rest. What will you do? You will take hold of it and you will lift it out of the hole. 12 You know that a man is much more valuable than a sheep. So it is right for us to do good things on our day of rest.’
13 Then Jesus said to the man with the weak hand, ‘Lift up your hand.’ So the man lifted up his hand and it became well again. It was now as strong as his other hand. 14 Then the Pharisees went out from the meeting place. They began to talk to each other about how they could kill Jesus.
God chose Jesus to do an important job
15 Jesus knew that the Pharisees wanted to kill him. So he went away from that place. A large crowd of people followed him. He made all the sick people become well again. 16 He said to these people, ‘You must not tell anyone about me.’ 17 This happened so that what the prophet Isaiah had spoken long ago became true. Isaiah wrote what God said:
18 ‘Here is my servant.
I have chosen him to serve me.
I love him and he makes me very happy.
I will give him the strength of my Spirit.
He will tell all the nations that I will judge them fairly.
19 He will not argue with people. He will not shout at them.
People will not hear his loud voice in the streets.
20 He will not hurt weak people.
He will be kind to people who are not strong.
He will do this until there is justice everywhere.
21 All the nations will trust him to save them.’
Jesus talks about Satan
22 After that, some people brought a man to Jesus. The man had a bad spirit in him. Because of this, he was blind and he could not speak. Jesus caused the man to become well again. The man could speak again and he could see. 23 When Jesus did this, all the people were very surprised. They asked each other, ‘Maybe this man is the Son of David that God will send to us. Could that be true?’
24 The Pharisees also heard about what had happened. They said, ‘This man can send bad spirits out of people only because Beelzebul gives him authority.[b] That is Satan, the one who rules all the bad spirits.’
25 Jesus knew what the Pharisees were thinking. So he said to them, ‘If armies in a country fight each other, then they will destroy their own country. If people in one city or in one family fight each other, then they will destroy their own city or family. 26 So Satan would not try to destroy himself. If Satan fights against himself, that would be the end of his own kingdom. 27 Some of your disciples can also send bad spirits out of people. You would not say that it is Satan's power that helps them. So your own disciples show that you are wrong about this. 28 I do send bad spirits out of people. I use the authority of God's Holy Spirit to do this. This shows that God has come to rule among you.
29 Nobody can go easily into the house of a strong man to rob him. To do that, he must first tie up the strong man. Then he can take away all that man's valuable things.[c]
30 If someone does not agree to help me, he is working against me. You should work with me to bring people to me for help. If you do not do that, you are really making people run away from me. 31 God is able to forgive all the wrong things that people do, and the bad things that they say against other people. But God will never forgive people who say bad things against the Holy Spirit. 32 God will forgive people who say bad things against me, the Son of Man. But God will never forgive people who say bad things against the Holy Spirit.’ He will not forgive them now or ever.[d]
Jesus talks about a tree and its fruit
33 Then Jesus said, ‘To have good fruit you must have a good tree. If you have a bad tree, then you will get bad fruit from it. You can know all about a tree by the kind of fruit that it makes. 34 You are like the children of dangerous snakes. You cannot say good things when your thoughts are bad. When you speak, your words show what is in your mind. 35 It is like things that you bring out of a room where you keep them. The good man says good things because he keeps good thoughts in his mind. The bad man says bad things because he keeps bad thoughts in his mind. 36 I tell you this: One day, God will judge everybody. On that day, he will ask you about every useless word that you have spoken. 37 God will think about the words that you have spoken. Then he will decide whether to let you go free or to punish you.’
The Pharisees want to see Jesus do something powerful
38 Then some teachers of God's Law and some Pharisees said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, we want to see you do something powerful. This will show us that God has really sent you.’
39 Jesus replied, ‘The people who are alive today are very bad. They do not obey God, but they want God to show them something powerful. But God will not do this for them. They will only see the same powerful thing that God did for his prophet Jonah. 40 Jonah stayed inside a big fish for three days and three nights.[e] In the same way, the Son of Man will remain in the ground for three days and three nights. 41 When God judges everyone, the people who lived in Nineveh will be there. They will stand up and they will speak against you. They will show that the people who are alive today are bad. When Jonah spoke to the people in Nineveh long ago, they stopped doing bad things. But look! There is someone here now who is greater than Jonah was.
42 Also, the Queen of Sheba travelled a long way to meet King Solomon. She wanted to hear his wise words. When God judges everyone, she will stand up. She will speak against you who are alive today. She will show that you are bad people. She listened to King Solomon. But look! There is someone here now who is greater than Solomon was. But you are not listening to me.’[f]
43 Jesus then said, ‘When a bad spirit leaves a person, it travels through dry places. It looks for a new place to live. But maybe it does not find anywhere. 44 So it says to itself, “I will return to the place where I lived before.” Then it goes back to that person. It finds that the place is empty. Everything there is now good and clean. 45 So the bad spirit goes out and it brings back seven other spirits. They are even worse than itself. They all go into the person and they live there. Now the person's life is even worse than it was before. The same thing will happen to you bad people who are alive today.’[g]
Jesus speaks about his family
46 While Jesus was still speaking to the crowd of people, his mother and his brothers arrived. They stood outside the house. They wanted to speak to Jesus. 47 Someone told him, ‘Look! Your mother and brothers are standing outside. They want to speak to you.’
48 Jesus replied, ‘I will tell you who my mother and my brothers really are.’ 49 Then he pointed to his disciples. He said, ‘Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 My brothers and sisters and my mother are those people who do what my Father in heaven wants.’[h]

- 12:29 Satan is like a strong person. But Jesus a stronger person. He fights Satan and beats him. Jesus sends bad spirits out of people and they go away. This shows that he is stronger than Satan. So it was not possible that Satan was working with Jesus.
- 12:32 The Pharisees had said that Satan worked with Jesus. The Holy Spirit gave his authority and power to Jesus. It was wrong to think that Satan was helping Jesus.
- 12:40 We can read this story in Jonah 1:17. God sent Jonah to a city called Nineveh. Jonah said to the people in that city, ‘You must stop doing bad things. You must show God that you are sorry. And you must start to obey him.’
- 12:42 We can read this story in 1 Kings 10:1-10.
- 12:45 A bad spirit can live in a person. Sometimes the Jewish leaders told a bad spirit to leave a person. It often came out, but later it went back to live inside the person again. Because the person did not have the Holy Spirit inside him, there was a place for bad spirits to live.

Tinanong nila si Jesus, “Ayon ba sa batas ang magpagaling ng maysakit sa araw ng Sabbath?” Itinanong nila ito upang makahanap ng maipaparatang sa kanya. 11 Sinabi niya sa kanila, “Halimbawa, kung isa sa inyo ay may tupang nahulog sa isang hukay sa araw ng Sabbath, hindi ba niya ito aabutin at iaahon? 12 Higit namang napakahalaga ng isang tao kaysa isang tupa! Kaya't naaayon sa batas ang gumawa ng mabuti sa araw ng Sabbath.” 13 At sinabi niya sa lalaki, “Iunat mo ang iyong kamay.” Iniunat nga niya ito at ito'y nanumbalik sa dati, wala nang sakit katulad ng isa. 14 Gayunma'y umalis ang mga Fariseo at nagpulong laban sa kanya at nag-usap kung paano siya papatayin. 15 Subalit alam ito ni Jesus kaya't umalis siya roon. Sumunod sa kanya ang napakaraming tao, at silang lahat ay kanyang pinagaling. 16 Ipinagbilin niya sa kanila na huwag nilang ipamamalita ang tungkol sa kanya. 17 Naganap ito bilang katuparan ng sinabi sa pamamagitan ni Propeta Isaias, na nagsasaad:
18 “Masdan ninyo ang hinirang kong lingkod,
ang aking iniibig, na sa kanya ang kaluluwa ko'y nalulugod.
Ilalagay ko ang aking Espiritu sa kanya,

19 Hindi siya makikipag-away o sisigaw man,
at walang makaririnig ng kanyang tinig sa mga lansangan.

nagbabagang mitsa ay hindi niya papatayin,

Pinagaling niya ang lalaki kaya't nakapagsalita at nakakita iyon. 23 Namangha ang lahat ng naroroon at nagtanong, “Ito na nga kaya ang Anak ni David?” 24 Subalit (D) nang ito'y marinig ng mga Fariseo, sinabi nila, “Nakapagpapalayas lamang ng mga demonyo ang taong ito sa pamamagitan ni Beelzebul na pinuno ng mga demonyo.” 25 Palibhasa'y alam niya ang mga iniisip nila, kanyang sinabi sa kanila, “Bawat kahariang lumalaban sa kanyang sarili ay babagsak; at walang bayan o sambahayang nagkakahati-hati ang magtatagal. 26 Kung pinapalayas ni Satanas si Satanas, hindi ba't nilalabanan niya ang kanyang sarili? Kung gayo'y paano tatayo ang kanyang kaharian? 27 At kung nakapagpapalayas ako ng mga demonyo sa pamamagitan ni Beelzebul, kanino namang kapangyarihan napapalayas sila ng inyong mga tagasunod? Kaya't sila na mismo ang hahatol sa inyo. 28 Ngunit kung sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu ng Diyos ay nagpapalayas ako ng mga demonyo, kung gayon, dumating na sa inyo ang kaharian ng Diyos. 29 O paano ba mapapasok at mapagnanakawan ng sinuman ang bahay ng isang malakas na tao, kung hindi muna niya ito gagapusin? Kung magkagayon, saka pa lamang niya malolooban ang bahay nito. 30 Ang (E) wala sa panig ko ay kalaban ko, at ang hindi ko kasamang nagtitipon ay pinagmumulan ng pagkakawatak-watak. 31 Kaya't sinasabi ko sa inyo, patatawarin ang mga tao sa bawat kasalanan at panlalait, subalit ang panlalait sa Espiritu ay hindi patatawarin. 32 At (F) ang sinumang magsalita ng anuman laban sa Anak ng Tao ay patatawarin; ngunit ang sinumang magsalita laban sa Banal na Espiritu ay hindi patatawarin, sa panahon mang ito o sa darating.
Sa Bunga Nakikilala(G)
33 “Alinman sa (H) gawin ninyong mabuti ang puno at mabuti ang bunga nito o gawin ninyong masama ang puno at masama rin ang bunga nito. Sapagkat nakikilala ang puno sa pamamagitan ng bunga nito. 34 Kayong (I) lahi ng mga ulupong! Sadyang hindi kayo makapagsasalita ng mabubuting bagay sapagkat kayo'y masasama! Sapagkat kung ano ang nilalaman ng dibdib, iyon ang mamumutawi sa bibig. 35 Ang mabuting tao mula sa kanyang mabuting kayamanan ay naglalabas ng mabubuting bagay, at ang masamang tao mula sa kanyang masamang kayamanan ay naglalabas ng masasamang bagay. 36 Sinasabi ko sa inyo, pananagutan ng mga tao sa araw ng paghuhukom ang bawat salitang walang habas na binigkas. 37 Sapagkat batay sa iyong mga salita, ikaw ay mapapawalang-sala o mahahatulan.”
Ang Tanda ni Jonas(J)
38 Pagkatapos, (K) may mga guro ng Kautusan at mga Fariseo na sumagot sa kanya, “Guro, nais naming makakita mula sa iyo ng isang himala bilang tanda.” 39 Sumagot (L) siya sa kanila, “Ang isang masama at taksil na lahi ay humahanap ng mahimalang tanda; subalit walang mahimalang tanda na ibibigay sa kanya, maliban sa mahimalang tanda ng propetang si Jonas. 40 Sapagkat (M) kung paanong tatlong araw at tatlong gabi si Jonas sa loob ng tiyan ng isang dambuhalang isda, gayundin ang Anak ng Tao ay tatlong araw at tatlong gabing mapapasailalim ng lupa. 41 Tatayo ang (N) mga taga-Nineve sa paghuhukom laban sa lahing ito at hahatulan ito, sapagkat nagsisi sila nang mangaral si Jonas. 43 “Kapag nakalabas mula sa isang tao ang karumal-dumal na espiritu, lumilibot ito sa mga tuyong lugar at naghahanap ng mapagpapahingahan, subalit wala siyang matagpuan. 44 Kaya't sinasabi niya, ‘Babalik ako sa pinanggalingan kong bahay.’ Pagdating niya roon at matagpuan iyong walang laman, nalinisan at naiayos na, 45 umaalis siya, at nagdadala pa ng pitong espiritu na mas masasama kaysa kanya, at sila'y pumapasok at naninirahan doon. Ang huling kalagayan ng taong iyon ay masahol pa kaysa una. Gayundin ang sasapitin ng masamang lahing ito.”
Ang Ina at mga Kapatid ni Jesus(Q)
46 Habang nagsasalita pa si Jesus[a] sa napakaraming tao, nakatayo sa labas ang kanyang ina at mga kapatid, hinihiling nilang siya'y makausap. 47 May nagsabi sa kanya, “Nakatayo po sa labas ang inyong ina at mga kapatid at ibig kayong makausap.”[b] 48 Sumagot si Jesus sa kanya, “Sino ba ang aking ina at sino ang aking mga kapatid?” 49 Itinuro ni Jesus ang kanyang mga alagad at sinabi niya, “Narito ang aking ina at aking mga kapatid. 50 Sapagkat sinumang gumagawa ng kalooban ng aking Ama sa langit, siya ang aking kapatid na lalaki, kapatid na babae, at ina.”
