²⁸ Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One^(A) who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

The Sheep and the Goats

³¹ “When the Son of Man comes^(A) in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.^{(B) 32} All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate^(C) the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.^{(D) 33} He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

³⁴ “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom^(E) prepared for you since the creation of the world.^{(F) 35} For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,^{(G) 36} I needed clothes and you clothed me,^(H) I was sick and you looked after me,^(I) I was in prison and you came to visit me.’^(J)

³⁷ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? ³⁸ When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? ³⁹ When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

⁴⁰ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’^(K)

⁴¹ “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,^(L) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire^(M) prepared for the devil and his angels.^{(N) 42} For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, ⁴³ I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

⁴⁴ “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

⁴⁵ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’^(O)

⁴⁶ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.^(P)”^(Q)

The Rich Man and Lazarus

¹⁹ “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.^{(A) 20} At his gate was laid a beggar^(B) named Lazarus, covered with sores ²¹ and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.^(C) Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

²² “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. ²³ In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. ²⁴ So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham,^(D) have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’^(E)

²⁵ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,^(F) but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.^{(G) 26} And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

²⁷ “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, ²⁸ for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,^(H) so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

²⁹ “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses^(I) and the Prophets;^(J) let them listen to them.’

³⁰ “‘No, father Abraham,’^(K) he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

³¹ “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

²² Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,^(A)

⁵ But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath^(A), when his righteous judgment^(B) will be revealed. ⁶ God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”^{[a](C) 7} To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor^(D) and immortality,^(E) he will give eternal life.^{(F) 8} But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,^(G) there will be wrath and anger.^{(H) 9} There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil:^(I) first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;^{(J) 10} but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.^{(K) 11} For God does not show favoritism.^(L)

The Judgment of Satan

⁷ When the thousand years are over,^(A) Satan will be released from his prison ⁸ and will go out to deceive the nations^(B) in the four corners of the earth^(C)—Gog and Magog^(D)—and to gather them for battle.^(E) In number they are like the sand on the seashore.^{(F) 9} They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded^(G) the camp of God’s people, the city he loves.^(H) But fire came down from heaven^(I) and devoured them. ¹⁰ And the devil, who deceived them,^(J) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur,^(K) where the beast^(L) and the false prophet^(M) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.^(N)

The Judgment of the Dead

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne^(O) and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence,^(P) and there was no place for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, great and small,^(Q) standing before the throne, and books were opened.^(R) Another book was opened, which is the book of life.^(S) The dead were judged^(T) according to what they had done^(U) as recorded in the books. ¹³ The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades^(V) gave up the dead^(W) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.^{(X) 14} Then death^(Y) and Hades^(Z) were thrown into the lake of fire.^(AA) The lake of fire is the second death.^{(AB) 15} Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life^(AC) was thrown into the lake of fire.

⁸ But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars^(A)—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur.^(B) This is the second death.”^(C)
