30 For in the resurrection they neither (A)marry nor (B)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, (C)have you not read what was said to you by God: 32 (D)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the crowd heard it, (E)they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

34 (F)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced (G)the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 (H)And one of them, (I)a lawyer, asked him a question (J)to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, (K)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And (L)a second is like it: (M)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 (N)On these two commandments depend (O)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

41 (P)Now while the Pharisees (Q)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about (R)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, (S)“The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, (T)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

44 (U)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

45 If then David calls him Lord, (V)how is he his son?” 46 (W)And no one was able to answer him a word, (X)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus (Y)said to the crowds and to his disciples, (Z)“The scribes and the Pharisees (AA)sit on Moses' seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, (AB)but not the works they do. (AC)For they preach, but do not practice. (AD)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[a] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. (AE)They do all their deeds (AF)to be seen by others. For they make (AG)their phylacteries broad and (AH)their fringes long, and they (AI)love the place of honor at feasts and (AJ)the best seats in the synagogues and (AK)greetings in (AL)the marketplaces and being called (AM)rabbi[b] by others. (AN)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are (AO)all brothers.[c] (AP)And call no man your father on earth, for (AQ)you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, (AR)the Christ. 11 (AS)The greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (AT)Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

13 “But woe (AU)to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you (AV)shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you (AW)neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.[d] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single (AX)proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a (AY)child of (AZ)hell[e] as yourselves.

16 “Woe to (BA)you, (BB)blind guides, who say, (BC)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or (BD)the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by (BE)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or (BF)the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by (BG)him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by (BH)heaven swears by (BI)the throne of God and by (BJ)him who sits upon it.

23 (BK)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (BL)you tithe mint and dill and (BM)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: (BN)justice and mercy and faithfulness. (BO)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing (BP)a camel!

25 (BQ)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (BR)you clean the outside of (BS)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of (BT)greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of (BU)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 (BV)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like (BW)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and (BX)all uncleanness. 28 So you also (BY)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of (BZ)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 (CA)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are (CB)sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 (CC)Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, (CD)you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to (CE)hell? 34 (CF)Therefore (CG)I send you (CH)prophets and wise men and (CI)scribes, (CJ)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and (CK)some you will (CL)flog in your synagogues and (CM)persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all (CN)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous (CO)Abel to the blood of (CP)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,[f] whom you murdered between (CQ)the sanctuary and (CR)the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, (CS)all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 (CT)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that (CU)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have (CV)gathered (CW)your children together (CX)as a hen gathers her brood (CY)under her wings, and (CZ)you were not willing! 38 See, (DA)your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, (DB)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

24 (DC)Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, (DD)there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

Signs of the End of the Age

As he sat on (DE)the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him (DF)privately, saying, “Tell us, (DG)when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your (DH)coming and of (DI)the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them, (DJ)“See that no one leads you astray. For (DK)many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am (DL)the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you (DM)are not alarmed, for this (DN)must take place, but the end is not yet. For (DO)nation will rise against nation, and (DP)kingdom against kingdom, and there will be (DQ)famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of (DR)the birth pains.

“Then (DS)they will deliver you up (DT)to tribulation and (DU)put you to death, and (DV)you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then many will fall away[g] and (DW)betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many (DX)false prophets will arise (DY)and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, (DZ)the love of many will grow cold. 13 (EA)But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom (EB)will be proclaimed throughout the whole world (EC)as a testimony (ED)to all nations, and (EE)then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation (EF)spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in (EG)the holy place ((EH)let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 (EI)Let the one who is on (EJ)the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And (EK)alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be (EL)great tribulation, (EM)such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for (EN)the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. 23 (EO)Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For (EP)false christs and (EQ)false prophets will arise and (ER)perform great signs and wonders, (ES)so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

  7. Matthew 24:10 Or stumble

30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage;(A) they will be like the angels in heaven. 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’[a]?(B) He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.(C)

The Greatest Commandment(D)

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,(E) the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law,(F) tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[b](G) 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[c](H) 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”(I)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(J)

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

“The son of David,”(K) they replied.

43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[d](L)

45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.(M)

A Warning Against Hypocrisy(N)(O)

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law(P) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(Q)

“Everything they do is done for people to see:(R) They make their phylacteries[e](S) wide and the tassels on their garments(T) long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(U) they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(V)

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(W) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(X) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(Y)

Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees

13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(Z) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(AA) [14] [f]

15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(AB) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(AC) as you are.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(AD) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(AE) 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?(AF) 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?(AG) 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells(AH) in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.(AI)

23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth(AJ) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.(AK) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides!(AL) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.

25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish,(AM) but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.(AN) 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(AO) which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets(AP) and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.(AQ) 32 Go ahead, then, and complete(AR) what your ancestors started!(AS)

33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers!(AT) How will you escape being condemned to hell?(AU) 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;(AV) others you will flog in your synagogues(AW) and pursue from town to town.(AX) 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel(AY) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,(AZ) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.(BA) 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.(BB)

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,(BC) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(BD) and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(BE) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[g](BF)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(BG)

24 Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another;(BH) every one will be thrown down.”

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(BI) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(BJ) and of the end of the age?”(BK)

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(BL) For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(BM) You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(BN) There will be famines(BO) and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(BP) and put to death,(BQ) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(BR) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(BS) will appear and deceive many people.(BT) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(BU) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(BV) will be preached in the whole world(BW) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15 “So when you see standing in the holy place(BX) ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’[h](BY) spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let no one on the housetop(BZ) go down to take anything out of the house. 18 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 19 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!(CA) 20 Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again.(CB)

22 “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect(CC) those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.(CD) 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders(CE) to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
