³ And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

¹³ Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also ^(A)gossips and ^(B)busybodies, saying what they should not.

¹⁷ So ^(A)he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. ¹⁸ Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, ^(B)“What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because ^(C)he was preaching ^(D)Jesus and the resurrection. ¹⁹ And they took him and brought him to ^(E)the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this ^(F)new teaching is that you are presenting? ²⁰ For you bring some ^(G)strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” ²¹ Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.

¹⁵ For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, ^(A)since it is only the third hour of the day.^[a]

²⁵ And ^(A)it was the third hour^[a] when they crucified him.

⁶ And ^(A)about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ ⁷ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’

¹⁶ “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

⁴⁹ Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, ^(A)excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.

¹² so that you may not be sluggish, but ^(A)imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
