³ When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;

⁴⁷ So the chief priests and the Pharisees ^(A)gathered ^(B)the council and said, ^(C)“What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and ^(D)the Romans will come and take away both our ^(E)place and our nation.”

⁶ And when they could not find them, ^(A)they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, ⁷ and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against ^(B)the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is ^(C)another king, Jesus.”

Lament over Jerusalem

^37 (A)“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that ^(B)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have ^(C)gathered ^(D)your children together ^(E)as a hen gathers her brood ^(F)under her wings, and ^(G)you were not willing!

²⁹ And behold, they ^(A)cried out, “What have you to do with us, ^(B)O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us ^(C)before the time?”

² greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming ^(A)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

²⁰ And when they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, “These men are Jews, and they are disturbing our city. ²¹ They ^(A)advocate customs that are not lawful for us ^(B)as Romans to accept or practice.”

²⁴ Now when ^(A)the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. ²⁵ And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison ^(B)are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” ²⁶ Then ^(C)the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for ^(D)they were afraid of being stoned by the people.

²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, ²⁸ saying, ^(E)“We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you ^(F)intend to bring this man's blood upon us.”

²⁴ And when they heard it, they lifted their voices ^(A)together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, ^(B)who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, ²⁵ who through the mouth of our father David, your servant,^[a] said by the Holy Spirit,

²⁷ for truly in this city there were gathered together against your ^(F)holy servant Jesus, ^(G)whom you anointed, both ^(H)Herod and ^(I)Pontius Pilate, along ^(J)with the Gentiles and ^(K)the peoples of Israel,
