Iniharap si Jesus kay Pilato(A)
27 Kinaumagahan, ang lahat ng mga punong pari at ang matatandang pinuno ng bayan ay nagsanggunian kung paano maipapapatay si Jesus. 2 Siya'y ginapos nila, dinala sa labas, at iniharap sa gobernador na si Pilato.
Nagpakamatay si Judas(B)
3 Nang makita (C) ng nagkanulong si Judas na si Jesus ay nahatulan na, siya'y nagsisi at isinauli niya ang tatlumpung pirasong pilak sa mga punong pari at sa matatandang pinuno. 4 Wika niya, “Nagkasala ako sa pagkakanulo sa dugong walang sala.” Ngunit sinabi nila, “Ano iyon sa amin? Bahala ka sa sarili mo.” 5 At inihagis ni Judas ang mga piraso ng pilak sa loob ng templo at siya'y lumabas. Umalis siya at nagbigti. 6 Pinulot ng mga punong pari ang mga piraso ng pilak at sinabi nila, “Hindi nararapat na ilagay ang mga ito sa kabang-yaman, sapagkat dugo ang katumbas nito.” 7 Kaya't napagkasunduan nilang gamitin iyon upang bilhin ang bukid ng magpapalayok, na gagawing libingan ng mga dayuhan. 8 Dahil dito, ang bukid na iyon ay tinawag na Bukid ng Dugo hanggang sa araw na ito. 9 Kaya't (D) natupad ang sinabi sa pamamagitan ni Propeta Jeremias,[a] “At kinuha nila ang tatlumpung pirasong pilak, na inihalaga sa kanya ng ilang anak ng Israel, 10 at ang mga iyon ay ipinambayad nila sa bukid ng magpapalayok, gaya ng iniutos sa akin ng Panginoon.”

11 Samantala, tumayo si Jesus sa harap ng gobernador at tinanong siya nito, “Ikaw ba ang Hari ng mga Judio?” “Ikaw ang nagsasabi niyan,” sagot ni Jesus. 12 Subalit nang magparatang sa kanya ang mga punong pari at ang matatandang pinuno ay wala siyang sinabing anuman. 13 At sinabi ni Pilato sa kanya, “Hindi mo ba naririnig kung gaano karami ang ibinibintang nila sa iyo?” 14 Ngunit ni isa mang kataga ay hindi siya sumagot sa kanya, na lubhang ipinagtaka ng gobernador.

Si Barabas ba, o si Jesus na tinatawag na Cristo?” 18 Sinabi niya ito sapagkat nahalata niyang dahil sa inggit ay iniharap nila si Jesus sa kanya. 19 At habang nakaupo siya sa upuan ng paghuhukom, ipinasabi sa kanya ng kanyang asawa ang ganito, “Huwag mong gagawan ng anuman ang taong iyan na walang sala, sapagkat labis akong pinahirapan sa panaginip ko sa araw na ito dahil sa kanya.” 20 Ngunit inudyukan ng mga punong pari at ng matatandang pinuno ang mga taong-bayan na kanilang hilingin si Barabas at patayin naman si Jesus. 21 Muling sumagot ang gobernador at sinabi sa kanila, “Sino sa dalawa ang nais ninyong palayain ko sa inyo?” Sila'y sumagot, “Si Barabas!” 22 Sinabi sa kanila ni Pilato, “At ano naman ang gagawin ko rito kay Jesus, ang tinatawag na Cristo?” Lahat sila'y nagsabi, “Ipako siya sa krus!” 23 At sinabi niya, “Bakit, ano ba'ng ginawa niyang masama?” Ngunit lalo silang nagsisigaw, “Ipako siya sa krus!” 24 Kaya't (G) nang makita ni Pilato na wala na siyang magagawa, at sa halip ay mayroon nang namumuong isang malaking kaguluhan, kumuha siya ng tubig at hinugasan niya ang kanyang mga kamay sa harap ng madla, at kanyang sinabi, “Wala akong kinalaman sa pagdanak ng dugo ng taong ito.[c] Kayo ang may kagagawan nito.” 25 Sumagot ang buong bayan at nagsabi, “Hayaang panagutan namin at ng aming mga anak ang kanyang dugo.” 26 Pagkatapos ay pinalaya niya sa kanila si Barabas. Subalit si Jesus ay ipinahagupit niya at ipinaubaya upang ipako sa krus.

27 Dinala si Jesus ng mga kawal ng gobernador sa Pretorio at tinipon nila ang buong batalyon ng mga kawal sa harapan niya. 28 Siya'y kanilang hinubaran at isinuot sa kanya ang isang balabal na matingkad na pula. 29 Gumawa sila ng isang koronang tinik at ipinatong sa kanyang ulo. Ipinahawak nila sa kanang kamay niya ang isang tambo at sila'y lumuhod sa harapan niya at siya'y kanilang nilibak, sa pagsasabing, “Mabuhay ang Hari ng mga Judio!” 30 Siya'y kanilang dinuraan. Kinuha nila ang tambo at paulit-ulit na inihampas sa kanyang ulo. 31 Matapos siyang kutyain, hinubaran siya ng balabal at isinuot sa kanya ang kanyang mga damit. Pagkatapos, siya ay kanilang inilabas upang ipako sa krus.
Si Jesus ay Ipinako sa Krus(I)
32 Habang lumalabas sila sa lungsod, nakasalubong nila ang isang lalaking taga-Cirene, na nagngangalang Simon. Wika nila, 42 “Iniligtas niya ang iba ngunit hindi niya mailigtas ang kanyang sarili. Siya raw ang Hari ng Israel. Bumaba siya ngayon sa krus, at maniniwala tayo sa kanya. 43 Nagtiwala (N) siya sa Diyos. Tingnan natin ngayon kung ililigtas siya ng Diyos, kung gusto niya, sapagkat sinabi niyang siya ang Anak ng Diyos.” 44 Kinutya rin siya ng mga tulisang ipinako sa krus na kasama niya.
Namatay si Jesus(O)
45 Mula sa katanghaliang-tapat[d] hanggang sa ikatlo ng hapon[e] ay nagdilim sa buong lupain. 46 At (P) nang malapit na ang ikatlo ng hapon, sumigaw si Jesus nang napakalakas, na sinasabi, “Eli, Eli, lama sabacthani?” na ang ibig sabihin ay “Diyos ko, Diyos ko, bakit mo ako pinabayaan?” 47 Nang marinig ito ng ilan sa mga nakatayo roon ay sinabi nila, “Tinatawag ng taong ito si Elias.” 48 Agad na tumakbo (Q) ang isa sa kanila, kumuha ng isang espongha at isinawsaw sa suka,[f] ikinabit sa isang tambo, at ibinigay sa kanya upang inumin. 49 Ngunit ang iba'y nagsabi, “Hayaan muna ninyo siya. Tingnan natin kung darating si Elias upang siya'y iligtas.” 50 Muling sumigaw si Jesus nang napakalakas at nalagot ang kanyang hininga. 51 At (R) biglang napunit sa dalawa ang tabing ng templo, mula itaas hanggang sa ibaba. Nayanig ang lupa, nabiyak ang mga bato. 52 Nabuksan ang mga libingan, at maraming katawan ng mga taong banal na namatay ang muling nabuhay. 53 Lumabas ang mga ito sa mga libingan at pagkatapos ng muling pagkabuhay ni Jesus, sila'y pumasok sa banal na lungsod at doon ay nakita ng maraming tao. 54 Nang makita ng senturyon at ng mga kasamahan niyang nagbabantay kay Jesus ang lindol at ang mga pangyayari, kinilabutan sila, at nagsabi, “Totoo ngang ito ang Anak ng Diyos.”[g] 55 At (S) maraming babaing naroroon din ang nakatanaw mula sa malayo. Sumunod sila kay Jesus mula pa sa Galilea upang maglingkod sa kanya. 56 Kabilang sa mga iyon ay si Maria Magdalena, si Maria na ina nina Santiago at Jose, at ang ina ng mga anak ni Zebedeo.
Inilibing si Jesus(T)
57 Nang magdadapit-hapon na ay dumating ang isang mayamang lalaking taga-Arimatea, na nagngangalang Jose, na naging alagad din ni Jesus. 58 Ang taong ito ay pumunta kay Pilato at hiningi ang bangkay ni Jesus. At ipinag-utos ni Pilato na iyon ay ibigay kay Jose. 59 Kinuha ni Jose ang bangkay at binalot sa isang malinis na telang lino, 60 at inilagay ito sa sarili niyang bagong libingan, na kanyang ipinaukit sa bato. Pagkatapos ay iginulong niya ang isang malaking bato sa pasukan ng libingan, at siya'y umalis. 61 Naroon at nakaupo si Maria Magdalena at ang isa pang Maria sa tapat ng libingan.
Naglagay ng mga Bantay sa Libingan
62 Nang sumunod na araw, pagkatapos ng araw ng Paghahanda, nagpulong sa harapan ni Pilato ang mga punong pari at ang mga Fariseo. 63 Kanilang sinabi, (U) “Ginoo, natatandaan naming sinabi ng bulaang iyon noong siya'y nabubuhay pa na siya raw ay muling mabubuhay pagkalipas ng tatlong araw. 64 Kaya't pabantayang mabuti ang libingan hanggang sa ikatlong araw; baka pumaroon ang kanyang mga alagad at nakawin siya, at ipagsabi sa mga tao na siya'y muling nabuhay mula sa mga patay. Kapag nagkagayon, magiging masahol pa ang huling pandaraya kaysa una.” 65 Sinabi ni Pilato sa kanila, “Mayroon kayong bantay;[h] pumunta kayo roon at tiyakin ninyong hindi iyon mabubuksan.” 66 Pumunta nga sila roon, at tiniyak na hindi mabubuksan ang libingan. Sinelyuhan nila ito at mahigpit na pinabantayan.

27 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36 And sitting down they watched him there;
37 And set up over his head his accusation written, This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews.
38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.
57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

Jesus utlämnas till Pilatus

3 Men då Judas, som hade förrått Jesus, såg att Jesus var dömd, ångrade han sig och lämnade tillbaka de trettio silvermynten till översteprästerna och de äldste 4 och sade: "Jag har syndat och förrått oskyldigt blod." De svarade: "Vad rör det oss? Du vill se det så." 5 Då kastade han silvermynten i templet och gav sig av. Sedan gick han och hängde sig. 6 Översteprästerna tog mynten och sade: "Det är inte tillåtet att lägga dem i offerkistan, eftersom det är blodspengar." 7 Och de beslöt att för dessa pengar köpa Krukmakar- åkern till begravningsplats för främlingar. 8 Därför kallas den åkern än i dag Blodsåkern. 9 Då uppfylldes det som var sagt genom profeten Jeremia: Och jag tog de trettio silvermynten, det pris som Israels barn hade satt på honom som hade värderats, [b] 10 och jag gav dem som betalning för Krukmakaråkern, så som Herren hade befallt mig.
Jesus inför Pilatus
11 Jesus ställdes nu inför landshövdingen. Denne frågade honom: "Är du judarnas konung?" Jesus svarade: "Du själv säger det." 12 Och när översteprästerna och de äldste anklagade honom, svarade han inte. 13 Då sade Pilatus till honom: "Hör du inte hur mycket de anklagar dig?" 14 Men Jesus svarade honom inte med ett enda ord, så att landshövdingen blev mycket förvånad.
15 Vid högtiden brukade landshövdingen frige en fånge, en som de själva önskade. 16 Just då hade man en beryktad fånge, som hette Barabbas.[c] 17 När de nu var samlade, frågade Pilatus dem: "Vem vill ni att jag skall frige, Barabbas eller Jesus, som kallas Messias?" 18 Han visste nämligen att det var av avund som de hade utlämnat honom. 19 Medan Pilatus satt på domarsätet, sände hans hustru bud till honom och lät säga: "Ha ingenting att göra med denne rättfärdige man! Jag har i natt lidit mycket i en dröm för hans skull." 20 Men översteprästerna och de äldste övertalade folkmassan att begära att Barabbas skulle friges och Jesus dödas. 21 När landshövdingen frågade dem: "Vilken av de två vill ni att jag skall frige åt er?", svarade de: "Barabbas". 22 Pilatus frågade dem: "Vad skall jag då göra med Jesus, som kallas Messias?" Alla svarade: "Korsfäst honom!" 23 Han frågade: "Vad har han gjort för ont?" Men de skrek ännu högre: "Korsfäst honom!" 24 Då Pilatus såg att ingenting hjälpte utan att oväsendet bara ökade, tog han vatten och tvättade sina händer i folkets åsyn och sade: "Jag är oskyldig till denne mans blod. Ni får själva svara för det." 25 Allt folket svarade: "Hans blod må komma över oss och över våra barn." 26 Då frigav han Barabbas, men Jesus lät han gissla och utlämnade honom till att korsfästas.
Jesus hånas och misshandlas
27 Därefter tog landshövdingens soldater Jesus med sig in i pretoriet[d] och samlade hela vaktstyrkan kring honom. 28 De tog av honom kläderna och klädde honom i en röd mantel, 29 vred ihop en krona av törne och satte den på hans huvud, och i hans högra hand satte de en käpp. Sedan böjde de knä inför honom och hånade honom och sade: "Leve judarnas konung!" 30 Och de spottade på honom och tog käppen och slog honom i huvudet. 31 När de hade hånat honom, tog de av honom manteln och satte på honom hans egna kläder och förde bort honom till att korsfästas.
Jesus korsfästes
32 På vägen ut fann de en man, Simon, från Cyrene.[e] Honom tvingade de att bära hans kors. 33 Och när de kom till den plats som kallas Golgata - det betyder huvudskalleplats - 34 gav de honom vin att dricka blandat med galla. Han smakade på det men ville inte dricka. 35 När de hade korsfäst honom, delade de hans kläder mellan sig och kastade lott om dem. 36 Sedan satt de där och vaktade honom. 37 Över hans huvud hade man satt upp anklagelsen mot honom. Där stod skrivet: "Detta är Jesus, judarnas konung."
38 Tillsammans med honom korsfästes två rövare, den ene på högra sidan och den andre på vänstra. 39 De som gick förbi smädade honom och skakade på huvudet 40 och sade: "Du som bryter ner templet och bygger upp det på tre dagar, hjälp dig själv, om du är Guds Son, och stig ner från korset!" 41 Också översteprästerna och de skriftlärda och de äldste gjorde narr av honom och sade: 42 "Andra har han hjälpt. Sig själv kan han inte hjälpa. Han är Israels konung. Han må nu stiga ner från korset, så skall vi tro på honom. 43 Han litar på Gud. Nu får Gud rädda honom, om han har honom kär. Han har ju sagt: Jag är Guds Son." 44 På samma sätt blev han också hånad av rövarna som var korsfästa tillsammans med honom.
Jesus dör
45 Vid sjätte timmen kom över hela landet ett mörker, som varade ända till nionde timmen. 46 Och vid nionde timmen ropade Jesus med hög röst: "Eli, Eli, lema sabaktani?" Det betyder: "Min Gud, min Gud, varför har du övergivit mig?" Jesus begravs
57 När det hade blivit kväll, kom en rik man från Arimatea som hette Josef och som hade blivit en Jesu lärjunge. 58 Han gick till Pilatus och bad att få Jesu kropp. Pilatus befallde då att han skulle få den. 59 Josef tog kroppen, svepte den i rent linnetyg 60 och lade den i sin nya grav som han hade låtit hugga ut i klippan. Sedan rullade han en stor sten för ingången till graven och gick därifrån. 61 Maria från Magdala och den andra Maria var där, och de satt mitt emot graven.
En vaktstyrka bevakar graven
62 Nästa dag, som var dagen efter tillredelsedagen,[h] samlades översteprästerna och fariseerna hos Pilatus 63 och sade: "Herre, vi har kommit att tänka på vad den där villoläraren sade, medan han ännu levde: Efter tre dagar skall jag uppstå. 64 Ge därför befallning om att graven blir säkert stängd fram till tredje dagen, så att hans lärjungar inte kommer och stjäl hans kropp och sedan säger till folket att han har uppstått från de döda. Då blir det sista bedrägeriet värre än det första." 65 Pilatus sade till dem: "Här har ni vaktstyrkan. Gå och bevaka graven så gott ni kan." 66 De gick och bevakade graven och förseglade stenen. Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(A)
27 When morning came, (B)all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. 2 And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and (C)delivered Him to [a]Pontius Pilate the governor.
Judas Hangs Himself(D)
3 (E)Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty (F)pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.”
And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”
5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and (G)departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” 7 And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field has been called (H)the Field of Blood to this day.

Jesus Faces Pilate(K)

13 Then Pilate said to Him, (O)“Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14 But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(P)
15 (Q)Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. 16 And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called [b]Barabbas. 17 Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of (R)envy.
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”
20 (S)But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?”
They said, (T)“Barabbas!”
22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”
They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”
23 Then the governor said, (U)“Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”
24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a [c]tumult was rising, he (V)took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this [d]just Person. You see to it.”
25 And all the people answered and said, (W)“His blood be on us and on our children.”
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when (X)he had [e]scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(Y)
27 (Z)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the [f]Praetorium and gathered the whole [g]garrison around Him. 28 And they (AA)stripped Him and (AB)put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 (AC)When they had [h]twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then (AD)they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, (AE)and led Him away to be crucified.
The King on a Cross(AF)
32 (AG)Now as they came out, (AH)they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross. 33 (AI)And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, 34 (AJ)they gave Him [i]sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
35 (AK)Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, [j]that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:
(AL)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
36 (AM)Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. 37 And they (AN)put up over His head the accusation written against Him:
THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 (AO)Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.
39 And (AP)those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, (AQ)“You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! (AR)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the [k]scribes and elders, said, 42 “He (AS)saved others; Himself He cannot save. 44 (AU)Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.
Jesus Dies on the Cross(AV)
45 (AW)Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour (AX)Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, (AY)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, (AZ)filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.
49 The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”
50 And Jesus (BA)cried out again with a loud voice, and (BB)yielded up His spirit.
51 Then, behold, (BC)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 (BD)So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, (BE)“Truly this was the Son of God!”
55 And many women (BF)who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, 56 (BG)among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and [n]Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(BH)
57 Now (BI)when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. 59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and (BJ)laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. 61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting [o]opposite the tomb.
Pilate Sets a Guard
62 On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, (BK)‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come [p]by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure, (BL)sealing the stone and setting the guard.

Judas Hangs Himself
27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(A) 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(B) to Pilate the governor.(C)
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)
Jesus Before Pilate(L)
11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(M)
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)
32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(AZ)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)
The Burial of Jesus(BL)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)
