La conspiración contra Jesús(A)
26 Después de exponer todas estas cosas, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: 2 «Como ya sabéis, faltan dos días para la Pascua, y el Hijo del hombre será entregado para que lo crucifiquen».
3 Se reunieron entonces los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo en el palacio de Caifás, el sumo sacerdote, 4 y con artimañas buscaban cómo arrestar a Jesús para matarlo. 5 «Pero no durante la fiesta —decían—, no sea que se amotine el pueblo».
Una mujer unge a Jesús en Betania(B)
6 Estando Jesús en Betania, en casa de Simón llamado el Leproso, 7 se acercó una mujer con un frasco de alabastro lleno de un perfume muy caro, y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de Jesús mientras él estaba sentado a la mesa.
8 Al ver esto, los discípulos se indignaron.
―¿Para qué este desperdicio? —dijeron—. 9 Podía haberse vendido este perfume por mucho dinero para darlo a los pobres.
10 Consciente de ello, Jesús les dijo:
―¿Por qué molestáis a esta mujer? Ella ha hecho una buena obra conmigo. 11 A los pobres siempre los tendréis con vosotros, pero a mí no me vais a tener siempre. 12 Al derramar ella este perfume sobre mi cuerpo, lo hizo a fin de prepararme para la sepultura. 13 Os aseguro que en cualquier parte del mundo donde se predique este evangelio, se contará también, en memoria de esta mujer, lo que ella hizo.
Judas acuerda traicionar a Jesús(C)
14 Uno de los doce, el que se llamaba Judas Iscariote, fue a ver a los jefes de los sacerdotes.
15 ―¿Cuánto me dais si yo os entrego a Jesús? —les propuso.
Decidieron pagarle treinta monedas de plata. 16 Y desde entonces Judas buscaba una oportunidad para entregarlo.
La Cena del Señor(D)(E)(F)
17 El primer día de la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura, se acercaron los discípulos a Jesús y le preguntaron:
―¿Dónde quieres que hagamos los preparativos para que comas la Pascua?
18 Él les respondió que fueran a la ciudad, a la casa de cierto hombre, y le dijeran: «El Maestro dice: “Mi tiempo está cerca. Voy a celebrar la Pascua en tu casa con mis discípulos”». 19 Los discípulos hicieron entonces como Jesús les había mandado, y prepararon la Pascua.
20 Al anochecer, Jesús estaba sentado a la mesa con los doce. 21 Mientras comían, les dijo:
―Os aseguro que uno de vosotros me va a traicionar.
22 Ellos se entristecieron mucho, y uno por uno comenzaron a preguntarle:
―¿Acaso seré yo, Señor?
23 ―El que mete la mano conmigo en el plato es el que me va a traicionar —respondió Jesús—. 24 A la verdad, el Hijo del hombre se irá, tal como está escrito de él, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona! Más le valdría a ese hombre no haber nacido.
25 ―¿Acaso seré yo, Rabí? —le dijo Judas, el que lo iba a traicionar.
―Tú lo has dicho —le contestó Jesús.
26 Mientras comían, Jesús tomó pan y lo bendijo. Luego lo partió y se lo dio a sus discípulos, diciéndoles:
―Tomad y comed; esto es mi cuerpo.
27 Después tomó la copa, dio gracias y se la ofreció diciéndoles:
―Bebed de ella todos. 28 Esto es mi sangre del pacto,[a] que es derramada por muchos para el perdón de pecados. 29 Os digo que no beberé de este fruto de la vid desde ahora en adelante, hasta el día en que beba con vosotros el vino nuevo en el reino de mi Padre.
30 Después de cantar los salmos, salieron al monte de los Olivos.
Jesús predice la negación de Pedro(G)
31 ―Esta misma noche —les dijo Jesús— todos vosotros me abandonaréis, porque está escrito:
»“Heriré al pastor,
y se dispersarán las ovejas del rebaño”.[b]
32 Pero, después de que yo haya resucitado, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea».
33 ―Aunque todos te abandonen —declaró Pedro—, yo jamás lo haré.
34 ―Te aseguro —le contestó Jesús— que esta misma noche, antes de que cante el gallo, me negarás tres veces.
35 ―Aunque tenga que morir contigo —insistió Pedro—, jamás te negaré.
Y los demás discípulos dijeron lo mismo.
Jesús en Getsemaní(H)
36 Luego fue Jesús con sus discípulos a un lugar llamado Getsemaní, y les dijo: «Sentaos aquí mientras voy más allá a orar». 37 Se llevó a Pedro y a los dos hijos de Zebedeo, y comenzó a sentirse triste y angustiado. 38 «Es tal la angustia que me invade que me siento morir —les dijo—. Quedaos aquí y permaneced despiertos conmigo».
39 Yendo un poco más allá, se postró sobre su rostro y oró: «Padre mío, si es posible, no me hagas beber este trago amargo.[c] Pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieres tú».
40 Luego volvió adonde estaban sus discípulos y los encontró dormidos. «¿No pudisteis permanecer despiertos conmigo ni una hora? —le dijo a Pedro—. 41 Estad alerta y orad para no caer en tentación. El espíritu está dispuesto, pero el cuerpo[d] es débil».
42 Por segunda vez se retiró y oró: «Padre mío, si no es posible evitar que yo beba este trago amargo,[e] hágase tu voluntad».
43 Cuando volvió, otra vez los encontró dormidos, porque se les cerraban los ojos de sueño. 44 Así que los dejó y se retiró a orar por tercera vez, diciendo lo mismo.
45 Volvió de nuevo a los discípulos y les dijo: «¿Seguís durmiendo y descansando? Mirad, se acerca la hora, y el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de pecadores. 46 ¡Levantaos! ¡Vámonos! ¡Ahí viene el que me traiciona!»
Arresto de Jesús(I)
47 Todavía estaba hablando Jesús cuando llegó Judas, uno de los doce. Lo acompañaba una gran turba armada con espadas y palos, enviada por los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo. 48 El traidor les había dado esta contraseña: «Al que dé un beso, ese es; arrestadlo». 49 En seguida Judas se acercó a Jesús y lo saludó.
―¡Rabí! —le dijo, y lo besó.
50 ―Amigo —le replicó Jesús—, ¿a qué vienes?[f]
Entonces los hombres se acercaron y prendieron a Jesús. 51 En eso, uno de los que estaban con él extendió la mano, sacó la espada e hirió al siervo del sumo sacerdote, cortándole una oreja.
52 ―Guarda tu espada —le dijo Jesús—, porque los que a hierro matan, a hierro mueren.[g] 53 ¿Crees que no puedo acudir a mi Padre, y al instante pondría a mi disposición más de doce batallones[h] de ángeles? 54 Pero, entonces, ¿cómo se cumplirían las Escrituras que dicen que así tiene que suceder?
55 Y de inmediato dijo a la turba:
―¿Acaso soy un bandido,[i] para que vengáis con espadas y palos a arrestarme? Todos los días me sentaba a enseñar en el templo, y no me prendisteis. 56 Pero todo esto ha sucedido para que se cumpla lo que escribieron los profetas.
Entonces todos los discípulos lo abandonaron y huyeron.
Jesús ante el Consejo(J)
57 Los que habían arrestado a Jesús lo llevaron ante Caifás, el sumo sacerdote, donde se habían reunido los maestros de la ley y los ancianos. 58 Pero Pedro lo siguió de lejos hasta el patio del sumo sacerdote. Entró y se sentó con los guardias para ver en qué terminaba aquello.
59 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y el Consejo en pleno buscaban alguna prueba falsa contra Jesús para poder condenarlo a muerte. 60 Pero no la encontraron, a pesar de que se presentaron muchos falsos testigos.
Por fin se presentaron dos, 61 que declararon:
―Este hombre dijo: “Puedo destruir el templo de Dios y reconstruirlo en tres días”.
62 Poniéndose en pie, el sumo sacerdote le dijo a Jesús:
―¿No vas a responder? ¿Qué significan estas denuncias en tu contra?
63 Pero Jesús se quedó callado. Así que el sumo sacerdote insistió:
―Te ordeno en el nombre del Dios viviente que nos digas si eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios.
64 ―Tú lo has dicho —respondió Jesús—. Pero yo os digo a todos: De ahora en adelante veréis al Hijo del hombre sentado a la derecha del Todopoderoso, y viniendo en las nubes del cielo.
65 ―¡Ha blasfemado! —exclamó el sumo sacerdote, rasgándose las vestiduras—. ¿Para qué necesitamos más testigos? ¡Mirad, vosotros mismos habéis oído la blasfemia! 66 ¿Qué pensáis de esto?
―Merece la muerte —le contestaron.
67 Entonces algunos le escupieron en el rostro y le dieron puñetazos. Otros lo abofeteaban 68 y decían:
―A ver, Cristo, ¡adivina quién te pegó!
Pedro niega a Jesús(K)
69 Mientras tanto, Pedro estaba sentado afuera, en el patio, y una criada se le acercó.
―Tú también estabas con Jesús de Galilea —le dijo.
70 Pero él lo negó delante de todos, diciendo:
―No sé de qué estás hablando.
71 Luego salió a la puerta, donde otra criada lo vio y dijo a los que estaban allí:
―Este estaba con Jesús de Nazaret.
72 Él lo volvió a negar, jurándoles:
―¡A ese hombre ni lo conozco!
73 Poco después se acercaron a Pedro los que estaban allí y le dijeron:
―Seguro que eres uno de ellos; se nota por tu acento.
74 Y comenzó a echar maldiciones, y les juró:
―¡A ese hombre ni lo conozco!
En ese instante cantó un gallo. 75 Entonces Pedro se acordó de lo que Jesús había dicho: «Antes de que cante el gallo, me negarás tres veces». Y saliendo de allí, lloró amargamente.

El complot para prender a Jesús

26 Cuando hubo acabado Jesús todas estas palabras, dijo a sus discípulos: 2 Sabéis que dentro de dos días se celebra la pascua,(A) y el Hijo del Hombre será entregado para ser crucificado.
3 Entonces los principales sacerdotes, los escribas, y los ancianos del pueblo se reunieron en el patio del sumo sacerdote llamado Caifás, 4 y tuvieron consejo para prender con engaño a Jesús, y matarle. 5 Pero decían: No durante la fiesta, para que no se haga alboroto en el pueblo.
Jesús es ungido en Betania

6 Y estando Jesús en Betania, en casa de Simón el leproso, 7 vino a él una mujer, con un vaso de alabastro de perfume de gran precio, y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de él, estando sentado a la mesa.(B) 8 Al ver esto, los discípulos se enojaron, diciendo: ¿Para qué este desperdicio? 9 Porque esto podía haberse vendido a gran precio, y haberse dado a los pobres. 10 Y entendiéndolo Jesús, les dijo: ¿Por qué molestáis a esta mujer? pues ha hecho conmigo una buena obra. 11 Porque siempre tendréis pobres con vosotros,(C) pero a mí no siempre me tendréis. 12 Porque al derramar este perfume sobre mi cuerpo, lo ha hecho a fin de prepararme para la sepultura. 13 De cierto os digo que dondequiera que se predique este evangelio, en todo el mundo, también se contará lo que esta ha hecho, para memoria de ella.
Judas ofrece entregar a Jesús

14 Entonces uno de los doce, que se llamaba Judas Iscariote, fue a los principales sacerdotes, 15 y les dijo: ¿Qué me queréis dar, y yo os lo entregaré? Y ellos le asignaron treinta piezas de plata. 16 Y desde entonces buscaba oportunidad para entregarle.

Bueno le fuera a ese hombre no haber nacido. 25 Entonces respondiendo Judas, el que le entregaba, dijo: ¿Soy yo, Maestro? Le dijo: Tú lo has dicho.
26 Y mientras comían, tomó Jesús el pan, y bendijo, y lo partió, y dio a sus discípulos, y dijo: Tomad, comed; esto es mi cuerpo. 27 Y tomando la copa, y habiendo dado gracias, les dio, diciendo: Bebed de ella todos; 28 porque esto es mi sangre(E) del nuevo pacto,(F) que por muchos es derramada para remisión de los pecados. 29 Y os digo que desde ahora no beberé más de este fruto de la vid, hasta aquel día en que lo beba nuevo con vosotros en el reino de mi Padre.
Jesús anuncia la negación de Pedro

30 Y cuando hubieron cantado el himno, salieron al monte de los Olivos. 31 Entonces Jesús les dijo: Todos vosotros os escandalizaréis de mí esta noche; porque escrito está: Heriré al pastor, y las ovejas del rebaño serán dispersadas.(G) 32 Pero después que haya resucitado, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea.(H) 33 Respondiendo Pedro, le dijo: Aunque todos se escandalicen de ti, yo nunca me escandalizaré. 34 Jesús le dijo: De cierto te digo que esta noche, antes que el gallo cante, me negarás tres veces. 35 Pedro le dijo: Aunque me sea necesario morir contigo, no te negaré. Y todos los discípulos dijeron lo mismo.
Jesús ora en Getsemaní

36 Entonces llegó Jesús con ellos a un lugar que se llama Getsemaní, y dijo a sus discípulos: Sentaos aquí, entre tanto que voy allí y oro. 37 Y tomando a Pedro, y a los dos hijos de Zebedeo, comenzó a entristecerse y a angustiarse en gran manera. 38 Entonces Jesús les dijo: Mi alma está muy triste, hasta la muerte; quedaos aquí, y velad conmigo. 39 Yendo un poco adelante, se postró sobre su rostro, orando y diciendo: Padre mío, si es posible, pase de mí esta copa; pero no sea como yo quiero, sino como tú. 40 Vino luego a sus discípulos, y los halló durmiendo, y dijo a Pedro: ¿Así que no habéis podido velar conmigo una hora? 41 Velad y orad, para que no entréis en tentación; el espíritu a la verdad está dispuesto, pero la carne es débil. 42 Otra vez fue, y oró por segunda vez, diciendo: Padre mío, si no puede pasar de mí esta copa sin que yo la beba, hágase tu voluntad. 43 Vino otra vez y los halló durmiendo, porque los ojos de ellos estaban cargados de sueño. 44 Y dejándolos, se fue de nuevo, y oró por tercera vez, diciendo las mismas palabras. 45 Entonces vino a sus discípulos y les dijo: Dormid ya, y descansad. He aquí ha llegado la hora, y el Hijo del Hombre es entregado en manos de pecadores. 46 Levantaos, vamos; ved, se acerca el que me entrega.
Arresto de Jesús

47 Mientras todavía hablaba, vino Judas, uno de los doce, y con él mucha gente con espadas y palos, de parte de los principales sacerdotes y de los ancianos del pueblo. 48 Y el que le entregaba les había dado señal, diciendo: Al que yo besare, ese es; prendedle. 49 Y en seguida se acercó a Jesús y dijo: ¡Salve, Maestro! Y le besó. 50 Y Jesús le dijo: Amigo, ¿a qué vienes? Entonces se acercaron y echaron mano a Jesús, y le prendieron. 51 Pero uno de los que estaban con Jesús, extendiendo la mano, sacó su espada, e hiriendo a un siervo del sumo sacerdote, le quitó la oreja. 52 Entonces Jesús le dijo: Vuelve tu espada a su lugar; porque todos los que tomen espada, a espada perecerán. 53 ¿Acaso piensas que no puedo ahora orar a mi Padre, y que él no me daría más de doce legiones de ángeles? 54 ¿Pero cómo entonces se cumplirían las Escrituras, de que es necesario que así se haga? 55 En aquella hora dijo Jesús a la gente: ¿Como contra un ladrón habéis salido con espadas y con palos para prenderme? Cada día me sentaba con vosotros enseñando en el templo,(I) y no me prendisteis. 56 Mas todo esto sucede, para que se cumplan las Escrituras de los profetas. Entonces todos los discípulos, dejándole, huyeron.
Jesús ante el concilio

57 Los que prendieron a Jesús le llevaron al sumo sacerdote Caifás, adonde estaban reunidos los escribas y los ancianos. 58 Mas Pedro le seguía de lejos hasta el patio del sumo sacerdote; y entrando, se sentó con los alguaciles, para ver el fin. 59 Y los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos y todo el concilio, buscaban falso testimonio contra Jesús, para entregarle a la muerte, 60 y no lo hallaron, aunque muchos testigos falsos se presentaban. Pero al fin vinieron dos testigos falsos, 61 que dijeron: Este dijo: Puedo derribar el templo de Dios, y en tres días reedificarlo.(J) 62 Y levantándose el sumo sacerdote, le dijo: ¿No respondes nada? ¿Qué testifican estos contra ti? 63 Mas Jesús callaba. Entonces el sumo sacerdote le dijo: Te conjuro por el Dios viviente, que nos digas si eres tú el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios. 64 Jesús le dijo: Tú lo has dicho; y además os digo, que desde ahora veréis al Hijo del Hombre sentado a la diestra del poder de Dios, y viniendo en las nubes del cielo.(K) 65 Entonces el sumo sacerdote rasgó sus vestiduras, diciendo: ¡Ha blasfemado! ¿Qué más necesidad tenemos de testigos? He aquí, ahora mismo habéis oído su blasfemia. 66 ¿Qué os parece? Y respondiendo ellos, dijeron: ¡Es reo de muerte!(L) 67 Entonces le escupieron en el rostro, y le dieron de puñetazos, y otros le abofeteaban,(M) 68 diciendo: Profetízanos, Cristo, quién es el que te golpeó.
Pedro niega a Jesús

69 Pedro estaba sentado fuera en el patio; y se le acercó una criada, diciendo: Tú también estabas con Jesús el galileo. 70 Mas él negó delante de todos, diciendo: No sé lo que dices. 71 Saliendo él a la puerta, le vio otra, y dijo a los que estaban allí: También este estaba con Jesús el nazareno. 72 Pero él negó otra vez con juramento: No conozco al hombre. 73 Un poco después, acercándose los que por allí estaban, dijeron a Pedro: Verdaderamente también tú eres de ellos, porque aun tu manera de hablar te descubre. 74 Entonces él comenzó a maldecir, y a jurar: No conozco al hombre. Y en seguida cantó el gallo. 75 Entonces Pedro se acordó de las palabras de Jesús, que le había dicho: Antes que cante el gallo, me negarás tres veces. Y saliendo fuera, lloró amargamente.

The Plot to Kill Jesus
26 When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, 2 (A)“You know that after two days (B)the Passover is coming, and (C)the Son of Man (D)will be delivered up to be crucified.”
3 (E)Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in (F)the palace of the high priest, whose name was (G)Caiaphas, 4 (H)and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, (I)lest there be an uproar among the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6 (J)Now when Jesus was at (K)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[a] 7 a woman came up to him with an alabaster flask of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at table. 8 And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this could have been sold for a large sum and (L)given to the poor.” 10 But (M)Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 For (N)you always have the poor with you, but (O)you will not always have me. 12 In pouring this ointment on my body, she has done it (P)to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever (Q)this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told (R)in memory of her.”
Judas to Betray Jesus
14 (S)Then one of the twelve, whose name was (T)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they (U)paid him (V)thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity (W)to betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
17 (X)Now on (Y)the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, (Z)‘The Teacher says, (AA)My time is at hand. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
20 (AB)When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve.[b] 21 And as they were eating, (AC)he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, (AD)“He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes (AE)as it is written of him, but (AF)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (AG)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, (AH)Rabbi?” He said to him, (AI)“You have said so.”
Institution of the Lord's Supper
26 (AJ)Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and (AK)after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; (AL)this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he (AM)had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for (AN)this is my (AO)blood of the[c] covenant, which is poured out for (AP)many (AQ)for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you (AR)in my Father's kingdom.”
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial
30 (AS)And when they had sung a hymn, (AT)they went out to (AU)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
36 (BB)Then Jesus went with them (BC)to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him (BD)Peter and (BE)the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, (BF)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and (BG)watch[d] with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face (BH)and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let (BI)this cup pass from me; (BJ)nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 (BK)Watch and (BL)pray that you (BM)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, (BN)your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (BO)their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for (BP)the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[e] See, (BQ)the hour is at hand, and (BR)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
47 (BS)While he was still speaking, (BT)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (BU)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (BV)“Friend, (BW)do what you came to do.”[f] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his (BX)sword and struck the servant[g] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For (BY)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 (BZ)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me (CA)more than twelve (CB)legions of angels? 54 (CC)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day (CD)I sat in the temple (CE)teaching, and you did not seize me. 56 But (CF)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” (CG)Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council
57 (CH)Then (CI)those who had seized Jesus led him to (CJ)Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 And (CK)Peter was following him at a distance, as far as (CL)the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with (CM)the guards to see the end. 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council[h] (CN)were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, (CO)though many false witnesses came forward. At last (CP)two came forward 61 and said, “This man said, (CQ)‘I am able to (CR)destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”[i] 63 (CS)But Jesus remained silent. (CT)And the high priest said to him, (CU)“I adjure you by (CV)the living God, (CW)tell us if you are (CX)the Christ, (CY)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, (CZ)“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on (DA)you will see the Son of Man (DB)seated at the right hand of Power and (DC)coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest (DD)tore his robes and said, (DE)“He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your judgment?” They answered, (DF)“He deserves death.” 67 Then (DG)they spit in his face (DH)and (DI)struck him. And some slapped him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you (DJ)Christ! Who is it that struck you?”
Peter Denies Jesus
69 (DK)Now Peter was sitting outside (DL)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus (DM)of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for (DN)your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, (DO)“Before the rooster crows, you will (DP)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

The Plot Against Jesus(A)
26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,(B) he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover(C) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled(D) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,(E) 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.(F) 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot(G) among the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany(H)(I)
6 While Jesus was in Bethany(J) in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”
10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[a](K) but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.(L) 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(M)
14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot(N)—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.(O) 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.
The Last Supper(P)(Q)(R)
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,(S) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”(T)
18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time(U) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”(V)
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”
23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.(W) 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.(X) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him,(Y) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”(Z)
Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(AA) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”
27 Then he took a cup,(AB) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the[b] covenant,(AC) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.(AD) 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you(AE) in my Father’s kingdom.”
30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(AF)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AG)
31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,(AH) for it is written:
32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(AJ)
33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”
34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(AK)
35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,(AL) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.
Gethsemane(AM)
36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee(AN) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow(AO) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”(AP)
39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup(AQ) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”(AR)
40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me(AS) for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(AT) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(AU)
43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(AV) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
Jesus Arrested(AW)
47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(AX) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(AY) and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[d](AZ)
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(BA) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(BB)
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(BC) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(BD) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(BE) that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(BF) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(BG) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(BH)
57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(BI) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(BJ) He entered and sat down with the guards(BK) to see the outcome.
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(BL) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(BM) came forward.
Finally two(BN) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(BO)
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(BP)
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(BQ) by the living God:(BR) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(BS) the Son of God.”(BT)
64 “You have said so,”(BU) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(BV) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[e](BW)
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(BX) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”
“He is worthy of death,”(BY) they answered.
67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(BZ) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(CA)
Peter Disowns Jesus(CB)
69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.
70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”
72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”
73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”
74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(CC) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
