Sin Čovječji je gospodar šabata

(Mk 2,23-28; Lk 6,1-5)

12 U ono je vrijeme, na šabat, dan odmora, Isus prolazio kroz žitna polja. Njegovi su učenici ogladnjeli pa su počeli trgati klasje i jesti. 2 Kad su to vidjeli farizeji, rekli su Isusu: »Gledaj! Tvoji učenici čine što nije dopušteno činiti na šabat.«

3 Tada im je Isus rekao: »Zar niste čitali što je David učinio kada su on i njegovi ljudi ogladnjeli? 4 Ušao je u Božju kuću i jeo posvećene kruhove prinesene Bogu iako ni njemu ni njegovim pratiocima nije bilo dopušteno da ih jedu, nego samo svećenicima. 5 Niste li čitali u Zakonu da na šabat svećenici u Hramu krše zakon o zabrani rada na šabat? No njima se to ne uzima za zlo. 6 No ja vam kažem da je ovdje nešto veće od Hrama. 7 Da ste shvatili što znači: ‘Želim da iskazujete milosrđe, a ne da prinosite žrtve’,[a] ne biste osuđivali ove nedužne.

8 Jer, Sin je Čovječji gospodar i šabata.«

Ozdravljenje na šabat

(Mk 3,1-6; Lk 6,6-11)

9 Odande je otišao u njihovu sinagogu, 10 gdje je bio neki čovjek s usahlom rukom. Neki su Židovi upitali Isusa, s namjerom da ga optuže: »Je li dopušteno liječiti na šabat?«[b]

11 Isus im je rekao: »Tko od vas ne bi uhvatio i izvadio svoju jedinu ovcu ako na šabat padne u jamu? 12 A čovjek je mnogo važniji od ovce. Zato je dopušteno na šabat činiti dobro.«

13 Zatim je rekao onom čovjeku: »Ispruži ruku!« Čovjek je ispružio ruku i ruka mu je postala zdrava kao i druga. 14 Farizeji su izašli i počeli smišljati kako da ubiju Isusa.

Isus je Božji izabrani sluga

15 Kad je za to doznao, otišao je odande, a slijedilo ga je silno mnoštvo. On ih je sve ozdravljao 16 i upozoravao ih da ne odaju tko je on, 17 kako bi se ispunilo što je rečeno po proroku Izaiji:

18 »Ovo je moj sluga,
    koga sam izabrao.
Moj ljubljeni,
    u kome uživa moja duša.
Stavit ću svoj Duh na njega
    i on će narodima objaviti pravdu.
19 Neće se svađati ni vikati,
    niti će se na ulicama čuti njegov glas.
20 On neće slomiti savijenu trsku,
    ni ugasiti žar koji tinja,
    dok pravdu ne dovede do pobjede.
21 U njegovo ime uzdat će se narodi.«[c]

Isusova moć je od Boga

(Mk 3,20-30; Lk 11,14-23; 12,10)

22 Potom su mu doveli slijepog i nijemog čovjeka, obuzetog zlim duhom. Isus ga je ozdravio pa je čovjek progovorio i progledao, 23 a mnoštvo je bilo zadivljeno te se pitalo: »Da nije ovo Davidov Sin?«

24 Kad su to čuli farizeji, rekli su: »On izgoni zle duhove uz pomoć Sotone[d], vladara zlih duhova.«

25 Isus je znao njihove misli pa im je rekao: »Svako će kraljevstvo, koje je nesložno, propasti. Nijedan grad ili obitelj, koji su nesložni unutar sebe, neće opstati. 26 Dakle, ako Sotona izgoni Sotonu, u sebi je podijeljen. Kako će onda opstati njegovo kraljevstvo? 27 Opet, ako ja izgonim zle duhove uz pomoć Sotone, uz čiju ih pomoć izgone vaši ljudi? Zato će vam suditi vaši vlastiti ljudi. 28 Budući da ja izgonim zle duhove uz pomoć Božjega Duha, to dokazuje da je Božje kraljevstvo došlo k vama.

29 Ili, kako može netko ući u kuću snažnog čovjeka i ukrasti mu imovinu ako ga prije ne sveže? Tek će mu tada moći opljačkati kuću.

30 Tko nije sa mnom—protiv mene je. Tko mi ne pomaže skupljati—taj rasipa. 31 Zato vam kažem: svaki grijeh i kleveta oprostit će se ljudima, ali kleveta protiv Svetog Duha neće se oprostiti. 32 Ako tko kaže nešto protiv Sina Čovječjega, može mu se oprostiti, ali ako tko kaže nešto protiv Svetog Duha, neće mu se oprostiti, ni na ovom svijetu ni na onome koji dolazi.«

Dobar i loš plod

(Lk 6,43-45)

33 »Da biste imali dobar plod, morate imati dobro stablo. No ako je stablo loše, imat ćete loš plod, jer stablo se prepoznaje po svome plodu. 34 Vi, zmije! Kako možete govoriti dobro kad ste zli? Usta govore ono čega je srce puno. 35 Dobar čovjek iznosi dobro jer je u njemu pohranjeno dobro, a zao čovjek iznosi zlo jer je u njemu pohranjeno zlo. 36 No, kažem vam da će na Sudnji dan ljudi odgovarati za svaku beskorisnu riječ koju su izgovorili. 37 Jer, tvoje će te riječi opravdati i tvoje će te riječi osuditi.«

Opomena nevjernom naraštaju

(Mk 8,11-12; Lk 11,29-32)

38 Tada su mu neki učitelji Zakona i farizeji rekli: »Učitelju, želimo da nam daš neki znak.«

39 A Isus im je odgovorio: »Zao i nevjeran naraštaj traži znak. No neće mu se dati nikakav drugi znak osim znaka proroka Jone[e]. 40 Kao što je Jona bio u utrobi morske nemani tri dana i tri noći, tako će i Sin Čovječji biti u utrobi zemlje tri dana i tri noći. 41 Na Sudu će Ninivljani[f] ustati zajedno s ljudima, koji žive danas, i osudit će ga jer su se obratili zbog Joninog propovijedanja. A ovdje je netko veći od Jone. 42 Na Sudu će Kraljica Juga[g] ustati s ovim naraštajem i osudit će ga jer je s kraja zemlje došla čuti Salomonovu mudrost. A ovdje je nešto veće od Salomona.«

Povratak zlih duhova

(Lk 11,24-26)

43 »Kada zao duh iziđe iz čovjeka, luta pustim mjestima tražeći odmor, ali ga ne nalazi. 44 Tada kaže: ‘Vratit ću se u svoju kuću iz koje sam izašao.’ Kada se vrati, pronalazi je praznu, čistu i uređenu. 45 Tada ode i sa sobom dovede sedam drugih duhova, gorih od sebe, pa svi uđu i nastane se ondje. Tako posljednje stanje toga čovjeka postaje gore od prvotnoga. Isto će biti i s ovim pokvarenim naraštajem.«

Isusova prava obitelj

(Mk 3,31-35; Lk 8,19-21)

46 Dok je Isus još govorio narodu, došli su njegova majka i braća pa su stajali vani tražeći da s njim govore. 47 Netko reče Isusu: »Evo, tvoja majka i braća stoje vani i žele razgovarati s tobom.«

48 A Isus mu odgovori: »Tko je moja majka i tko su moja braća?« 49 Onda je pokazao rukom na svoje učenike i rekao: »Evo moje majke i moje braće! 50 Da, tko god izvršava volju moga nebeskog Oca, taj mi je i brat, i sestra, i majka.«

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(A)

12 At that time (B)Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to (C)pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!”

3 But He said to them, “Have you not read (D)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and ate (E)the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, (F)but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the (G)law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple [a]profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? 6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is (H)One greater than the temple. 7 But if you had known what this means, (I)‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord [b]even of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(J)

11 Then He said to them, “What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? 12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Behold, My Servant

15 But when Jesus knew it, (N)He withdrew from there. (O)And great [c]multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all. 16 Yet He (P)warned them not to make Him known, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:

18 “Behold!(Q) My Servant whom I have chosen,
My Beloved (R)in whom My soul is well pleased!
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel nor cry out,
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench,

A House Divided Cannot Stand(S)

22 (T)Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the [d]blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the (U)Son of David?”

24 (V)Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by [e]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

25 But Jesus (W)knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, (X)surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 (Y)Or how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. 30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.

The Unpardonable Sin(Z)

31 “Therefore I say to you, (AA)every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, (AB)but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. 32 Anyone who (AC)speaks a word against the Son of Man, (AD)it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

A Tree Known by Its Fruit(AE)

33 “Either make the tree good and (AF)its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 (AG)Brood[f] of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? (AH)For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure [g]of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

The Scribes and Pharisees Ask for a Sign(AI)

38 (AJ)Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”

39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and (AK)adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 (AL)For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 (AM)The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and (AN)condemn it, (AO)because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 (AP)The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

An Unclean Spirit Returns(AQ)

43 (AR)“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, (AS)he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; (AT)and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Send for Him(AU)

46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, (AV)behold, His mother and (AW)brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, (AX)Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”

48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My (AY)brothers! 50 For (AZ)whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”

The Pharisees watch what Jesus does on the day of rest

12 On a Jewish day of rest, Jesus was walking through some fields where wheat was growing. His disciples were hungry. So they began to pick some of the grains of wheat. They began to eat them. 2 While the disciples were picking the grains, some Pharisees saw them. They said to Jesus, ‘Look at what your disciples are doing! It is against God's Law to do that on our day of rest.’

3 Jesus replied, ‘You have certainly read about what David did one day. He and the men who were with him were hungry. 4 David went into the temple. He ate the special bread that was there. He also gave some of it to his men to eat as well. But it is against God's Law for anyone except the priests to eat that special bread.[a]

5 Also, you certainly know what God's Law says about the priests. They work in the temple, even on the day of rest. They have not obeyed the Law about the day of rest. But God's Law tells us that they have not done anything that is wrong. 6 But I tell you this. There is someone here now who has greater authority even than the temple. 7 You should understand what the Bible teaches. God says there, “I want people to be kind to each other. I do not just want them to offer sacrifices to me.” If you had understood this, then you would not have said to me, “Your disciples are doing something wrong.” 8 The Son of Man has authority over the Law about the day of rest.’

9 Then Jesus left that place. He went into the Jewish meeting place. 10 A man was there. His hand was very small and weak, so he could not use it. Some Pharisees asked Jesus, ‘Is it right to make someone well again on our day of rest?’ They wanted to find a reason to say that Jesus was doing wrong things.

11 Jesus said to them, ‘Maybe one of you has a sheep that falls into a deep hole on our day of rest. What will you do? You will take hold of it and you will lift it out of the hole. 12 You know that a man is much more valuable than a sheep. So it is right for us to do good things on our day of rest.’

13 Then Jesus said to the man with the weak hand, ‘Lift up your hand.’ So the man lifted up his hand and it became well again. It was now as strong as his other hand. 14 Then the Pharisees went out from the meeting place. They began to talk to each other about how they could kill Jesus.

God chose Jesus to do an important job

15 Jesus knew that the Pharisees wanted to kill him. So he went away from that place. A large crowd of people followed him. He made all the sick people become well again. 16 He said to these people, ‘You must not tell anyone about me.’ 17 This happened so that what the prophet Isaiah had spoken long ago became true. Isaiah wrote what God said:

18 ‘Here is my servant.
I have chosen him to serve me.
I love him and he makes me very happy.
I will give him the strength of my Spirit.
He will tell all the nations that I will judge them fairly.
19 He will not argue with people. He will not shout at them.
People will not hear his loud voice in the streets.
20 He will not hurt weak people.
He will be kind to people who are not strong.
He will do this until there is justice everywhere.
21 All the nations will trust him to save them.’

Jesus talks about Satan

22 After that, some people brought a man to Jesus. The man had a bad spirit in him. Because of this, he was blind and he could not speak. Jesus caused the man to become well again. The man could speak again and he could see. 23 When Jesus did this, all the people were very surprised. They asked each other, ‘Maybe this man is the Son of David that God will send to us. Could that be true?’

24 The Pharisees also heard about what had happened. They said, ‘This man can send bad spirits out of people only because Beelzebul gives him authority.[b] That is Satan, the one who rules all the bad spirits.’

25 Jesus knew what the Pharisees were thinking. So he said to them, ‘If armies in a country fight each other, then they will destroy their own country. If people in one city or in one family fight each other, then they will destroy their own city or family. 26 So Satan would not try to destroy himself. If Satan fights against himself, that would be the end of his own kingdom. 27 Some of your disciples can also send bad spirits out of people. You would not say that it is Satan's power that helps them. So your own disciples show that you are wrong about this. 28 I do send bad spirits out of people. I use the authority of God's Holy Spirit to do this. This shows that God has come to rule among you.

29 Nobody can go easily into the house of a strong man to rob him. To do that, he must first tie up the strong man. Then he can take away all that man's valuable things.[c]

30 If someone does not agree to help me, he is working against me. You should work with me to bring people to me for help. If you do not do that, you are really making people run away from me. 31 God is able to forgive all the wrong things that people do, and the bad things that they say against other people. But God will never forgive people who say bad things against the Holy Spirit. 32 God will forgive people who say bad things against me, the Son of Man. But God will never forgive people who say bad things against the Holy Spirit.’ He will not forgive them now or ever.[d]

Jesus talks about a tree and its fruit

33 Then Jesus said, ‘To have good fruit you must have a good tree. If you have a bad tree, then you will get bad fruit from it. You can know all about a tree by the kind of fruit that it makes. 34 You are like the children of dangerous snakes. You cannot say good things when your thoughts are bad. When you speak, your words show what is in your mind. 35 It is like things that you bring out of a room where you keep them. The good man says good things because he keeps good thoughts in his mind. The bad man says bad things because he keeps bad thoughts in his mind. 36 I tell you this: One day, God will judge everybody. On that day, he will ask you about every useless word that you have spoken. 37 God will think about the words that you have spoken. Then he will decide whether to let you go free or to punish you.’

The Pharisees want to see Jesus do something powerful

38 Then some teachers of God's Law and some Pharisees said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, we want to see you do something powerful. This will show us that God has really sent you.’

39 Jesus replied, ‘The people who are alive today are very bad. They do not obey God, but they want God to show them something powerful. But God will not do this for them. They will only see the same powerful thing that God did for his prophet Jonah. 40 Jonah stayed inside a big fish for three days and three nights.[e] In the same way, the Son of Man will remain in the ground for three days and three nights. 41 When God judges everyone, the people who lived in Nineveh will be there. They will stand up and they will speak against you. They will show that the people who are alive today are bad. When Jonah spoke to the people in Nineveh long ago, they stopped doing bad things. But look! There is someone here now who is greater than Jonah was.

42 Also, the Queen of Sheba travelled a long way to meet King Solomon. She wanted to hear his wise words. When God judges everyone, she will stand up. She will speak against you who are alive today. She will show that you are bad people. She listened to King Solomon. But look! There is someone here now who is greater than Solomon was. But you are not listening to me.’[f]

43 Jesus then said, ‘When a bad spirit leaves a person, it travels through dry places. It looks for a new place to live. But maybe it does not find anywhere. 44 So it says to itself, “I will return to the place where I lived before.” Then it goes back to that person. It finds that the place is empty. Everything there is now good and clean. 45 So the bad spirit goes out and it brings back seven other spirits. They are even worse than itself. They all go into the person and they live there. Now the person's life is even worse than it was before. The same thing will happen to you bad people who are alive today.’[g]

Jesus speaks about his family

46 While Jesus was still speaking to the crowd of people, his mother and his brothers arrived. They stood outside the house. They wanted to speak to Jesus. 47 Someone told him, ‘Look! Your mother and brothers are standing outside. They want to speak to you.’

48 Jesus replied, ‘I will tell you who my mother and my brothers really are.’ 49 Then he pointed to his disciples. He said, ‘Look! Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 My brothers and sisters and my mother are those people who do what my Father in heaven wants.’[h]

  3. 12:29 Satan is like a strong person. But Jesus a stronger person. He fights Satan and beats him. Jesus sends bad spirits out of people and they go away. This shows that he is stronger than Satan. So it was not possible that Satan was working with Jesus.
  4. 12:32 The Pharisees had said that Satan worked with Jesus. The Holy Spirit gave his authority and power to Jesus. It was wrong to think that Satan was helping Jesus.

9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus,(K) they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”(L)

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?(M) 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!(N) Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.(O)

God’s Chosen Servant

15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.(P) 16 He warned them not to tell others about him.(Q) 17 This was to fulfill(R) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
    the one I love, in whom I delight;(S)
I will put my Spirit on him,(T)
    and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
    no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21     In his name the nations will put their hope.”[b](U)

Jesus and Beelzebul(V)

22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.(W) 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”(X)

24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul,(Y) the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”(Z)

25 Jesus knew their thoughts(AA) and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan(AB) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,(AC) by whom do your people(AD) drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God(AE) has come upon you.

29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(AF) 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.(AG) 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age(AH) or in the age to come.(AI)

33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(AJ) 34 You brood of vipers,(AK) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks(AL) what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(AM)

The Sign of Jonah(AN)(AO)

38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(AP) from you.”(AQ)

39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(AR) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(AS) so the Son of Man(AT) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(AU) 41 The men of Nineveh(AV) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(AW) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(AX) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(AY) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(AZ)

46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(BA) and brothers(BB) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”

48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(BC) is my brother and sister and mother.”
