The Things that Truly Please God(A)

When some Pharisees and some ·teachers of the law [scribes] came from Jerusalem, they gathered around Jesus. They saw that some of Jesus’ ·followers [disciples] ate food with hands that were not clean, that is, they hadn’t [ceremonially] washed them. ([For] The Pharisees and all the Jews never eat before washing their hands ·in the way required [L with a fist; C the meaning of the idiom is uncertain; it could mean “with a handful of water,” “with cupped hand,” “up to the wrist” or something else] by ·their unwritten laws [L the traditions of the elders]. ·And when they buy something in the market, they never eat it [or, And when they come from the market (where they might have touched something “unclean”), they do not eat] until they wash themselves in a special way. They also ·follow [hold fast to; observe] many other ·unwritten laws [traditions], such as the washing of cups, pitchers, and pots.[a])

The Pharisees and the ·teachers of the law [scribes] asked Jesus, “Why don’t your ·followers [disciples] ·obey [walk according to] the ·unwritten laws which have been handed down to us [traditions of the elders]? Why do they eat their food with hands that are ·not clean [defiled]?”

Jesus answered, “Isaiah was right when he ·spoke [prophesied] about you hypocrites. ·He wrote [As it is written],

‘These people show honor to me with ·words [L their lips],
    but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me is ·worthless [futile; in vain].
    The things they teach are nothing but human ·rules [commandments; Is. 29:13].’

You ·have stopped following [neglected; abandoned] the commands of God, and you ·follow [hold on to] only human ·teachings[b] [traditions].”

Then Jesus said to them, “You ·cleverly ignore [are very good at ignoring/despising] the commands of God so you can follow your own ·teachings [tradition]. 10 [For] Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ [Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16], and ‘Anyone who ·says cruel things to [speaks evil of; curses] his father or mother must be put to death’ [Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9]. 11 But you say a person can tell his father or mother, ‘I have something I could use to help you, but it is Corban—a gift to God.’ [C Corban is a Hebrew term meaning dedicated or set aside to God.] 12 You no longer let that person ·use that money [do anything] for his father or his mother. 13 By your own ·rules [tradition], which you ·teach people [have handed down], you are ·rejecting [nullifying; canceling] what God said. And you do many things like that.”

14 After Jesus called the crowd to him again, he said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand what I am saying. 15 There is nothing people put into their bodies that ·makes them unclean [pollutes/defiles them]. [But rather] People are ·made unclean [polluted; defiled] by the things that come out of them. |16 ·Let those with ears use them and listen [see 4:23].|”[c]

17 When Jesus left the ·people [crowd] and went into the house, his ·followers [disciples] asked him about this ·story [parable; see 3:23]. 18 Jesus said, “·Do you still not understand [Are you so dull]? ·Surely you know [L Don’t you know…?] that nothing that enters someone from the outside can make that person ·unclean [polluted; defiled]. 19 [Because] It does not go into the ·mind [heart], but into the stomach. Then it goes ·out of the body [L into the sewer/latrine].” ·(When Jesus said this, he meant that no longer was any food unclean for people to eat.) [or, (In this way, Jesus cleansed all food.)]

20 And Jesus said, “The things that come out of people are the things that make them ·unclean [defiled]. 21 ·All these evil things begin inside people, in the mind [L For from within, out of human hearts, come]: evil ·thoughts [intentions; ideas], sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, 22 greed, ·evil actions [wickedness], ·lying [deceit], ·doing sinful things [indecency; lust; lewdness], ·jealousy [envy; L evil eye], ·speaking evil of others [slander; blasphemy], pride, and foolish living. 23 All these evil things come from inside and make people ·unclean [defiled].”

Jesus Helps a Gentile Woman(B)

24 Jesus left that place and went to the area around Tyre[d] [C a Gentile city on the coast north of Israel]. When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know he was there, but he could not stay hidden. 25 A woman whose daughter had an ·evil [defiling; L unclean] spirit in her heard that he was there. So she ·quickly [immediately] came to Jesus and ·fell [bowed] at his feet. 26 She was ·Greek [a Gentile; C “Greek” is sometimes used for any non-Jew; Rom. 1:16], born in Phoenicia, in Syria. She ·begged [kept asking] Jesus to ·force [drive; cast] the demon out of her daughter.

27 Jesus told the woman, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and ·give [throw] it to the dogs. First let the children eat all they want.” [C “Children” refers to Israel; “dogs” to the Gentiles.]

28 But she answered, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table can eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then Jesus said, “Because of your answer, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.”

30 The woman went home and found her daughter lying in bed; the demon was gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf Man(C)

31 Then Jesus left the area around Tyre and went through Sidon to Lake Galilee [T the Sea of Galilee], to the area of ·the Ten Towns [or Decapolis; C an area east of Lake Galilee that once had ten main towns; 5:20]. 32 While he was there, some people brought a man to him who was deaf and ·could not talk plainly [had a speech impediment]. The people begged Jesus to put his hand on the man to heal him.

33 Jesus led the man away from the crowd, by himself. He put his fingers in the man’s ears and then spit and touched the man’s tongue. [C The use of saliva is mentioned in other ancient accounts of healing, and elsewhere in the Gospels; see 8:23; John 9:6.] 34 Looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to the man, “Ephphatha!” (This means [C in Aramaic], “Be opened.”) 35 Instantly the man was able to hear and to use his tongue so that he spoke clearly.

36 Jesus ·commanded [ordered; instructed] the people not to tell anyone about what happened. But the more he ·commanded [ordered; instructed] them, the more they ·told about [proclaimed] it. 37 They were completely amazed and said, “Jesus does everything well. He makes the deaf hear! And ·those who can’t talk [the mute] he makes able to speak.”

Co člověka špiní

Farizeové a někteří znalci Písma, kteří dorazili z Jeruzaléma, se sešli u Ježíše a uviděli některé jeho učedníky jíst chleby ‚nečistýma‘ (to jest neumytýma) rukama. Farizeové a všichni Židé totiž nejedí, aniž by si obřadně umyli ruce, a tak dodržují tradici starších. Když přijdou z trhu, nejedí, dokud se nevykoupou. A je ještě mnoho jiných věcí, které přijali a dodržují, jako očišťování pohárů, džbánů, měděných nádob a lehátek. [a] Farizeové a znalci Písma se ho tedy zeptali: „Proč se tvoji učedníci nechovají podle tradice starších a jedí chléb nečistýma rukama?“

On jim odpověděl: „Izaiáš o vás pokrytcích prorokoval správně. Jak je psáno:

‚Tento lid mě ctí svými rty,
srdcem je mi však vzdálený.
Nadarmo mě ale uctívají,
když učí lidské nauky a příkazy.‘ [b]

Opustili jste Boží přikázání, ale lidské tradice dodržujete.“

Potom pokračoval: „Opravdu pěkně zavrhujete Boží přikázání, abyste zachovali svou vlastní tradici! 10 Mojžíš řekl: ‚Cti otce i matku‘ [c] a ‚Kdokoli by zlořečil otci nebo matce, musí zemřít.‘ [d] 11 Vy ale říkáte, že kdyby člověk řekl otci nebo matce: ‚To, čím bych ti měl vypomoci, je korban‘ (to jest dar Bohu), 12 tak už ho nenecháte nic udělat pro jeho otce nebo matku. 13 Rušíte Boží slovo svou tradicí, kterou jste ustanovili. A podobných věcí děláte spoustu.“

14 Znovu pak svolal zástup a řekl jim: „Slyšte mě všichni a rozumějte. 15 [16] Nic, co do člověka vchází zvenku, ho nemůže pošpinit. Člověka špiní to, co z něj vychází!“ [e]

17 Když pak odešel od zástupu do domu, učedníci se ho vyptávali na to podobenství. 18 On jim odpověděl: „To jste tak nechápaví? Nerozumíte, že cokoli vchází do člověka zvenku, ho nemůže pošpinit? 19 Nejde to přece do jeho srdce, ale do břicha a odtud do stoky!“ Tak očistil všechny pokrmy.

20 Potom řekl: „Co z člověka vychází, to člověka špiní. 21 Z nitra lidského srdce vycházejí zlé myšlenky, smilnění, krádeže, vraždy, 22 cizoložství, chamtivost, ničemnost, lstivost, nestydatost, závist, urážky, pýcha, potrhlost. 23 Všechny tyto zlé věci vycházejí z nitra a špiní člověka.“

Víra pohanské ženy

24 Potom vstal a odešel odtud do okolí Týru. [f] Vešel do jednoho domu a ačkoli nechtěl, aby se to někdo dozvěděl, nedalo se to utajit. 25 Hned se totiž o něm doslechla jedna žena, která měla dcerku s nečistým duchem. Přišla, padla mu k nohám 26 a prosila ho, aby z její dcery vyhnal démona.

Ta žena byla Řekyně, rodem Syroféničanka, 27 a tak jí řekl: „Napřed nech najíst děti. Není správné vzít chleba dětem a hodit ho psům.“

28 Ona však odpověděla: „Ano, Pane, ale i psi pod stolem jedí zbytky po dětech.“

29 „Díky tomu, cos řekla, můžeš jít domů,“ odvětil jí na to. „Ten démon už z tvé dcery vyšel.“ 30 Když pak přišla domů, zjistila, že dívka leží na lůžku a že démon je pryč.

Efatha!

31 Ježíš pak odešel z týrského kraje, prošel Sidon a přes území Dekapole dorazil ke Galilejskému jezeru. 32 Tam k němu přivedli hluchoněmého člověka a prosili ho, aby na něj vložil ruku. 33 On si ho vzal stranou od zástupu, vložil mu prsty do uší, plivl a dotkl se jeho jazyka. 34 Potom vzhlédl k nebi, vzdychl a řekl mu: „Efatha!“ což znamená: „Otevři se!“ 35 Jeho uši se ihned otevřely, pouto jeho jazyka se uvolnilo a začal mluvit správně.

36 Ježíš jim zakázal komukoli to říkat, ale čím více jim to zakazoval, tím více to rozhlašovali. 37 Lidé byli naprosto ohromeni. Říkali: „Všechno udělal dobře! Dokonce dává hluchým sluch a němým řeč!“

That Which Defiles(A)

The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled,(B) that is, unwashed. (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.(C) When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])(D)

So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(E) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.’[b](F)

You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(G)

And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions!(H) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[d](I) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[e](J) 11 But you say(K) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(L) by your tradition(M) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] [f]

17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him(N) about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods(O) clean.)(P)

20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed,(Q) malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith(R)

24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[g](S) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit(T) came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man(U)

31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre(V) and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee(W) and into the region of the Decapolis.[h](X) 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,(Y) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on(Z) him.

33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit(AA) and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven(AB) and with a deep sigh(AC) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.(AD)

36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.(AE) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Lo que contamina al hombre

(A)Los fariseos, y algunos de los escribas que habían venido de Jerusalén(B), se reunieron alrededor de Él; y vieron que algunos de Sus discípulos comían el pan con manos inmundas(C), es decir, sin lavar. (Porque los fariseos y todos los judíos no comen a menos que se laven las manos cuidadosamente[a], observando así la tradición de los ancianos(D). Cuando vuelven de la plaza, no comen a menos que se laven[b]; y hay muchas otras cosas que han recibido para observarlas, como el lavamiento[c] de los vasos(E), de los cántaros y de las vasijas de cobre.)

Así que los fariseos y los escribas le preguntaron*: «¿Por qué Tus discípulos no andan conforme a la tradición de los ancianos(F), sino que comen[d] con manos inmundas[e](G)?». Jesús les respondió: «Bien profetizó Isaías de ustedes, hipócritas, como está escrito:

Este pueblo con los labios me honra,
Pero su corazón está muy lejos de Mí(H) .
-”Mas en vano me rinden culto,
Enseñando como doctrinas preceptos de hombres(I) ”.

Dejando el mandamiento de Dios, ustedes se aferran a la tradición de los hombres(J) ».

También les decía: «Astutamente[f]ustedes violan el mandamiento de Dios para guardar su tradición(K). 10 Porque Moisés dijo: “Honra a tu padre y a tu madre(L)”; y: “El que hable mal de su padre o de su madre, que muera[g](M)”. 11 Pero ustedes dicen: “Si un hombre dice al padre o a la madre: ‘Cualquier cosa mía con que pudieras beneficiarte es corbán(N) (es decir, ofrenda[h] a Dios)’”, 12 ya no le dejan hacer nada en favor de su padre o de su madre; 13 invalidando así la palabra de Dios por la tradición(O)de ustedes, la cual han transmitido, y hacen muchas cosas semejantes a estas».

14 Llamando de nuevo a la multitud, Jesús les decía: «Escuchen todos lo que les digo y entiendan: 15 no hay nada fuera del hombre que al entrar en él pueda contaminarlo; sino que lo que sale de adentro del hombre es lo que contamina al hombre. 16 [i]Si alguno tiene oídos para oír, que oiga».

17 Cuando Jesús dejó a la multitud y entró en casa(P), Sus discípulos le preguntaron acerca de la parábola(Q). 18 «¿También ustedes son tan faltos de entendimiento?», les dijo*. «¿No comprenden que todo lo que de afuera entra al hombre no lo puede contaminar, 19 porque no entra en su corazón, sino en el estómago[j], y se elimina[k]?». 20 También decía: «Lo que sale del hombre, eso es lo que contamina al hombre(T). 21 Porque de adentro, del corazón de los hombres, salen los malos pensamientos, fornicaciones[l], robos, homicidios, adulterios, 22 avaricias, maldades, engaños, sensualidad, envidia[m](U), calumnia, orgullo[n]e insensatez. 23 Todas estas maldades de adentro salen, y contaminan al hombre».

La mujer sirofenicia

24 (V)Levantándose de allí, Jesús se fue a la región de Tiro[o](W), y entrando en una casa, no quería que nadie lo supiera, pero[p] no pudo pasar inadvertido; 25 sino que enseguida, al oír hablar de Él, una mujer cuya hijita tenía un espíritu inmundo, fue y se postró a Sus pies. 26 La mujer era gentil[q], sirofenicia de nacimiento; y le rogaba que echara al demonio fuera de su hija.

27 Y Jesús le decía: «Deja que primero los hijos se sacien, pues no está bien[r]tomar el pan de los hijos y echarlo a los perrillos». 28 «Es cierto, Señor», le dijo* ella; «pero aun los perrillos debajo de la mesa comen las migajas de los hijos». 29 Jesús le dijo: «Por esta respuesta[s], vete; ya el demonio ha salido de tu hija». 30 Cuando ella volvió a su casa, halló que la niña estaba acostada[t] en la cama, y que el demonio había salido.

Curación de un sordomudo

31 (X)Volviendo Jesús a salir de la región de Tiro(Y), pasó por Sidón(Z) y llegó al mar de Galilea(AA), atravesando la región de Decápolis(AB). 32 Y le trajeron* a uno que era sordo y tartamudo, y le rogaron* que pusiera la mano sobre él(AC). 33 Entonces Jesús, tomándolo aparte de la multitud, a solas, le metió los dedos en los oídos, y escupiendo(AD), le tocó la lengua con la saliva; 34 y levantando los ojos al cielo, suspiró profundamente(AE) y le dijo*: «¡Effatá!», esto es, «¡Abrete!».

35 Al instante se abrieron sus oídos, y desapareció[u] el impedimento[v] de su lengua, y hablaba con claridad. 36 Jesús les ordenó que a nadie se lo dijeran(AF); pero mientras más se lo ordenaba, tanto más ellos lo proclamaban(AG). 37 Y estaban asombrados en gran manera, y decían: «Todo lo ha hecho bien; aun a los sordos hace oír y a los mudos hablar».
