17 (A)And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at table and eating, (B)Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, (C)one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is (D)one of the twelve, (E)one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of Man goes (F)as it is written of him, but (G)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (H)It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
Institution of the Lord's Supper
22 (I)And as they were eating, he took bread, and after (J)blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; (K)this is my body.” 23 And he took a cup, and when he had (L)given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them, (M)“This is my (N)blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for (O)many. 25 Truly, I say to you, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial
26 (P)And when they had sung a hymn, (Q)they went out to (R)the Mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will (S)strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 But after I am raised up, (T)I will go before you to Galilee.” 29 (U)Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” 30 And (V)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before (W)the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31 But (X)he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32 (Y)And they went (Z)to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him (AA)Peter and James and John, and began (AB)to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, (AC)“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and (AD)watch.”[b] 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground (AE)and prayed that, if it were possible, (AF)the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, (AG)“Abba, Father, (AH)all things are possible for you. Remove (AI)this cup from me. (AJ)Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.(A) 21 The Son of Man(B) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it(C) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.(D)
24 “This is my blood of the[a] covenant,(E) which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”(F)
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.(G)
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(H)
27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”(J)
29 Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[c] you yourself will disown me three times.”(K)
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you,(L) I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
Gethsemane(M)
32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John(N) along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,”(O) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour(P) might pass from him. 36 “Abba,[d] Father,”(Q) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup(R) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”(S)

Jesus Is Mocked
16 (A)And the soldiers led him away inside (B)the palace (that is, (C)the governor's headquarters),[a] and they called together the whole (D)battalion.[b] 17 And they clothed him in (E)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, (F)“Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and (G)spitting on him and (H)kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had (I)mocked him, they stripped him of (J)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they (K)led him out to crucify him.
The Crucifixion
21 (L)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 (M)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with (N)myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and (O)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And (P)it was the third hour[c] when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, (Q)“The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two (R)robbers, (S)one on his right and one on his left.[d] 29 And (T)those who passed by derided him, (U)wagging their heads and saying, (V)“Aha! (W)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, (X)“He saved others; (Y)he cannot save himself. 32 Let (Z)the Christ, (AA)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may (AB)see and believe.” (AC)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
The Death of Jesus
33 And when the sixth hour[e] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.[f] 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus (AD)cried with a loud voice, (AE)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with (AF)sour wine, put it on a reed (AG)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus (AH)uttered a loud cry and (AI)breathed his last. 38 And (AJ)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 (AK)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he[g] breathed his last, he said, (AL)“Truly this man was the Son[h] of God!”

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(A)
16 The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace(B) (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17 They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18 And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(C) 19 Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out(D) to crucify him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus(E)
21 A certain man from Cyrene,(F) Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus,(G) was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.(H) 22 They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 23 Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh,(I) but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots(J) to see what each would get.
25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.(K)
27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. [28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(L) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(M) 30 come down from the cross and save yourself!” 31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him(N) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! 32 Let this Messiah,(O) this king of Israel,(P) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(Q)
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.(R) 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](S)
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar,(T) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.(U)
38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.(V) 39 And when the centurion,(W) who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”(X)

The Great Commission

Jesus Has Risen(A)
