The Great Day of the Lord

4 ^[a] “For behold, ^(A)the day is coming, ^(B)burning like an oven, when ^(C)all the arrogant and ^(D)all evildoers ^(E)will be stubble. The day that is coming ^(F)shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. ²But for you ^(G)who fear my name, ^(H)the sun ^(I)of righteousness shall rise ^(J)with healing in its wings. You shall go out ^(K)leaping like calves from the stall. ³And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, ^(L)on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.

⁴^(M)“Remember ^(N)the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules^[b] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

⁵^(O)“Behold, I will send you ^(P)Elijah the prophet ^(Q)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. ⁶And he will ^(R)turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and ^(S)strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”^[c]

Judgment and Covenant Renewal

4 ^[a]“Surely the day is coming;^(A) it will burn like a furnace.^(B) All the arrogant^(C) and every evildoer will be stubble,^(D) and the day that is coming will set them on fire,^(E)” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch^(F) will be left to them. ²But for you who revere my name,^(G) the sun of righteousness^(H) will rise with healing^(I) in its rays. And you will go out and frolic^(J) like well-fed calves. ³Then you will trample^(K) on the wicked; they will be ashes^(L) under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty.

A Psalm.

98 Oh sing to the Lord ^(A)a new song,
    for he has done ^(B)marvelous things!
His ^(C)right hand and his holy arm
    have worked salvation for him.
²The Lord has ^(D)made known his salvation;
    he has ^(E)revealed his righteousness in ^(F)the sight of the nations.
³He has ^(G)remembered his ^(H)steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All ^(I)the ends of the earth have seen
    ^(J)the salvation of our God.

⁴^(K)Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;

He will establish you and ^(F)guard you against ^(G)the evil one.^[c] ⁴And ^(H)we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. ⁵May the Lord ^(I)direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Warning Against Idleness

⁶Now we command you, brothers, ^(A)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, ^(B)that you keep away from any ^(C)brother ^(D)who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. ⁷For you yourselves know ^(E)how you ought to imitate us, because ^(F)we were not idle when we were with you, ⁸nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but ^(G)with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. ⁹It was ^(H)not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves ^(I)an example to imitate. ¹⁰For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: ^(J)If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. ¹¹For we hear that some among you ^(K)walk in idleness, not busy at work, but ^(L)busybodies. ¹²Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.^[a]

¹³As for you, brothers, ^(M)do not grow weary in doing good.

Warning Against Idleness

On the contrary, we worked^(F) night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. ⁹We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help,^(G) but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.^(H) ¹⁰For even when we were with you,^(I) we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work^(J) shall not eat.”

¹¹We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies.^(K) ¹²Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ^(L) to settle down and earn the food they eat.^(M) ¹³And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.^(N)

Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple

⁵^(A)And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings, he said, ⁶“As for these things that you see, ^(B)the days will come when there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” ⁷And they asked him, “Teacher, ^(C)when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” ⁸And he said, ^(D)“See that you are not led astray. For ^(E)many will come in my name, saying, ^(F)‘I am he!’ and, ^(G)‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. ⁹And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be ^(H)terrified, for these things ^(I)must first take place, but the end will not be at once.”

Jesus Foretells Wars and Persecution

¹⁰Then he said to them, ^(J)“Nation will rise against nation, and ^(K)kingdom against kingdom. ¹¹There will be great ^(L)earthquakes, and in various places ^(M)famines and pestilences. And there will be ^(N)terrors and great ^(O)signs from heaven. ¹²But before all this ^(P)they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to ^(Q)the synagogues and ^(R)prisons, and you ^(S)will be brought before ^(T)kings and ^(U)governors for my name's sake. ¹³^(V)This will be your opportunity to bear witness. ¹⁴Settle it therefore in your minds ^(W)not to meditate beforehand how to answer, ¹⁵for ^(X)I will give you a mouth and ^(Y)wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or ^(Z)contradict. ¹⁶You will be delivered up ^(AA)even by parents and brothers^[a] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. ¹⁷^(AB)You will be hated by all for my name's sake. ¹⁸But ^(AC)not a hair of your head will perish. ¹⁹By your ^(AD)endurance you will gain your lives.

²⁰“But ^(AE)when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that ^(AF)its desolation has come near. ²¹Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it, ²²for these are ^(AG)days of ^(AH)vengeance, to fulfill ^(AI)all that is written. ²³^(AJ)Alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the earth and ^(AK)wrath against this people. ²⁴They will fall by the edge of the sword and ^(AL)be led captive among all nations, and ^(AM)Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, ^(AN)until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

²⁵“And ^(AO)there will be signs in sun and moon ^(AP)and stars, and on the earth ^(AQ)distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, ²⁶people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For ^(AR)the powers of the heavens will be shaken. ²⁷And then they will see ^(AS)the Son of Man coming in a cloud ^(AT)with power and great glory. ²⁸Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and ^(AU)raise your heads, because ^(AV)your redemption is drawing near.”

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times^(A)^(B)

⁵Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, ⁶“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;^(C) every one of them will be thrown down.”

⁷“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

⁸He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.^(D) ⁹When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

¹⁰Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.^(E) ¹¹There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.^(F)

¹²“But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. ¹³And so you will bear testimony to me.^(G) ¹⁴But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.^(H) ¹⁵For I will give you^(I) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. ¹⁶You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,^(J) and they will put some of you to death. ¹⁷Everyone will hate you because of me.^(K) ¹⁸But not a hair of your head will perish.^(L) ¹⁹Stand firm, and you will win life.^(M)

²⁰“When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,^(N) you will know that its desolation is near. ²¹Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.^(O) ²²For this is the time of punishment^(P) in fulfillment^(Q) of all that has been written. ²³How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. ²⁴They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled^(R) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

²⁵“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.^(S) ²⁶People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.^(T) ²⁷At that time they will see the Son of Man^(U) coming in a cloud^(V) with power and great glory. ²⁸When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”^(W)
