Người Bị Quỷ Ám Và Đàn Heo(A)
5 Đức Giê-su cùng môn đệ[a] đến bờ biển bên kia thuộc địa phận của người Giê-ra-sê. 2 Một người bị tà linh ám từ nghĩa địa chạy ra đón khi Ngài vừa bước ra khỏi thuyền. 3 Hắn sống nơi mồ mả, dù dùng dây xích cũng không ai xiềng hắn được. 4 Đã nhiều lần bị cùm, bị xích, song hắn bẻ xích phá cùm, chẳng ai trị nổi. 5 Suốt ngày đêm hắn lang thang nơi nghĩa địa và trên đồi hoang, la hét và lấy đá rạch mình.
6 Khi thấy Đức Giê-su từ đằng xa hắn chạy đến quỳ lạy Ngài, 7 kêu lớn lên rằng: “Lạy Đức Giê-su, Con Đức Chúa Trời Chí Cao, tôi có làm gì đến Ngài đâu? Tôi cầu Trời xin Ngài đừng hành hạ tôi;” 8 vì Đức Giê-su vừa bảo rằng: “Hỡi tà linh, hãy xuất khỏi người này.”
9 Rồi Ngài lại hỏi: “Tên mày là gì?” Quỷ đáp: “Tên tôi là đạo binh, vì chúng tôi đông.” 10 Quỷ nài xin Ngài đừng đuổi chúng ra khỏi vùng ấy.
11 Bấy giờ có đàn heo rất đông đang ăn trên đồi, 12 các quỷ van nài Ngài: “Xin cho chúng tôi đến nhập vào bầy heo kia.” 13 Ngài cho phép. Các tà linh xuất khỏi người bị ám và nhập vào bầy heo ước chừng hai ngàn con, cả bầy lao đầu qua bờ đá, rơi xuống biển chết chìm hết.
14 Những kẻ chăn heo chạy trốn và đồn tin này khắp thành phố và thôn xóm gần đó. Dân chúng đến để xem việc gì đã xảy ra. 15 Khi họ đến cùng Đức Giê-su và thấy người bị quỷ ám đang ngồi đó, quần áo chỉnh tề, tâm trí tỉnh táo, thì sợ hãi. 16 Những người chứng kiến thuật lại cho họ nghe việc đã xảy đến cho người bị quỷ ám và bầy heo. 17 Họ nài xin Ngài rời khỏi vùng đất của họ.
18 Khi Ngài bước lên thuyền, người vốn bị quỷ ám xin theo Ngài, 19 nhưng Ngài không cho, lại bảo: “Con hãy về nhà, đến với họ hàng thân thuộc và thuật cho họ nghe mọi việc Đức Chúa Trời đã làm và thương xót con.” 20 Người ấy đi khắp vùng Mười Thành kể lại những việc mà Đức Giê-su đã làm cho mình. Ai nấy đều kinh ngạc.
Con Gái Giai-ru Và Người Đàn Bà Bị Bệnh Băng Huyết(B)
21 Khi Đức Giê-su đi thuyền qua bờ bên kia, một đoàn dân đông đảo tụ họp đón Ngài dọc theo bờ biển. 22 Viên quản lý hội đường[b] tên là Giai-ru đến, vừa thấy Đức Giê-su; người quỳ xuống nơi chân Ngài. 23 Ông nài xin: “Con gái nhỏ tôi đang hấp hối, xin Thầy đến đặt tay cứu cho nó sống.” 24 Ngài đi với ông, và đoàn dân rất đông kéo theo lấn ép Ngài.
25 Trong đám đông, có một người đàn bà bị bệnh băng huyết đã mười hai năm. 26 Bà đã chịu khổ chạy chữa qua tay nhiều thầy thuốc, tốn hết tiền nhưng bệnh không khỏi, lại còn nặng hơn nữa. 27 Nghe nói về Đức Giê-su, bà chen vào đám đông theo sau Ngài để sờ vào áo Ngài. 28 Vì bà tự nhủ: “Tôi mà sờ được áo Ngài, thế nào cũng lành bệnh.” 29 Lập tức máu cầm lại và bà cảm biết mình đã được chữa lành.
30 Đức Giê-su nhận biết ngay có một luồng năng lực vừa ra khỏi Ngài, nên quay lại phía đám đông hỏi: “Ai đã sờ vào áo Ta?”
31 Các môn đệ Ngài thưa rằng: “Thầy thấy đám đông lấn ép mà sao Thầy còn hỏi: Ai sờ đến Ta?”
32 Và Ngài nhìn quanh để xem người đã đụng vào mình. 33 Người đàn bà nhận biết việc đã xảy ra cho mình thì run rẩy, sợ hãi, đến quỳ dưới chân Ngài mà trình bày tất cả sự thật. 34 Ngài bảo bà: “Con ơi, đức tin con đã chữa lành cho con, hãy về bình yên, khỏe mạnh hết đau yếu.”[c]
35 Ngài còn đang nói, người nhà của Giai-ru, viên quản lý hội đường, đến nói rằng: “Con gái chủ qua đời rồi, còn phiền Thầy làm chi?”
36 Nhưng Đức Giê-su chẳng quan tâm đến lời đó. Ngài bảo viên quản lý hội đường: “Đừng sợ, chỉ tin mà thôi.”
37 Ngài chẳng cho ai theo mình, ngoại trừ Phê-rơ, Gia-cơ và Giăng là em Gia-cơ. 38 Khi đến nhà viên quản lý hội đường, Ngài thấy cả nhà huyên náo, đầy tiếng người khóc lóc, kể lể. 39 Vừa bước vào nhà, Ngài bảo mọi người: “Tại sao lại khóc lóc ồn ào? Cháu không chết đâu, chỉ ngủ mà thôi!” 40 Họ chế nhạo Ngài, nhưng Ngài bảo mọi người lui ra, chỉ cho cha mẹ và các môn đệ theo Ngài vào nơi đứa bé đang nằm. 41 Cầm tay nó, Ngài gọi: “Ta-li-tha-cum,” nghĩa là: “Bé gái ơi, Ta truyền cho con, hãy dậy.”
42 Cô bé liền chỗi dậy, bước đi vì đã lên mười hai tuổi. Ai nấy đều sững sờ kinh ngạc vô cùng. 43 Ngài cấm ngặt họ không được tiết lộ việc này cho bất cứ ai và bảo cho cô bé ăn.

A Demon-Possessed Man Healed(A)
5 Then (B)they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the [a]Gadarenes. 2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an (C)unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind [b]him, not even with chains, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I (D)implore[c] You by God that You do not torment me.”
8 For He said to him, (E)“Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” 9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?”
And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country.
11 Now a large herd of (F)swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And [d]at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.
14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been (G)demon-possessed and had the legion, (H)sitting and (I)clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to him who had been demon-possessed, and about the swine. 17 Then (J)they began to plead with Him to depart from their region.
18 And when He got into the boat, (K)he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” 20 And he departed and began to (L)proclaim in [e]Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all (M)marveled.
A Girl Restored to Life and a Woman Healed(N)
21 (O)Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. 22 (P)And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet 23 and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and (Q)lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him.
25 Now a certain woman (R)had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and (S)touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”
29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the [f]affliction. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that (T)power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”
31 But His disciples said to Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ”
32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. 33 But the woman, (U)fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, (V)your faith has made you well. (W)Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
35 (X)While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; only (Y)believe.” 37 And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38 Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw [g]a tumult and those who (Z)wept and wailed loudly. 39 When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but (AA)sleeping.”
40 And they ridiculed Him. (AB)But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. 41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were (AC)overcome with great amazement. 43 But (AD)He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.

13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.
14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
15 And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
16 And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.
17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
19 Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.
21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.
25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

Jesus Frees a Man From Evil Spirits(A)
5 Jesus and his followers went across the lake to the area where the Gerasene people[a] lived. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man came to him from the caves where the dead are buried. This man had an evil spirit living inside him. 3 He lived in the burial caves. No one could keep him tied up, even with chains. 4 Many times people had put chains on his hands and feet, but he broke the chains. No one was strong enough to control him. 5 Day and night he stayed around the burial caves and on the hills. He would scream and cut himself with rocks.
6 While Jesus was still far away, the man saw him. He ran to Jesus and bowed down before him. 7-8 As Jesus was saying, “You evil spirit, come out of this man,” the man shouted loudly, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you in God’s name not to punish me!”
9 Then Jesus asked the man, “What is your name?”
The man answered, “My name is Legion,[b] because there are many spirits inside me.” 10 The spirits inside the man begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of that area.
11 A large herd of pigs was eating on a hill near there. 12 The evil spirits begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs. Let us go into them.” 13 So Jesus allowed them to do this. The evil spirits left the man and went into the pigs. Then the herd of pigs ran down the hill and into the lake. They were all drowned. There were about 2000 pigs in that herd.
14 The men who had the work of caring for the pigs ran away. They ran to the town and to the farms and told everyone what happened. The people went out to see. 15 They came to Jesus, and they saw the man who had the many evil spirits. He was sitting down and was wearing clothes. He was in his right mind again. When they saw this, they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen what Jesus did told the others what happened to the man who had the demons living in him. And they also told about the pigs. 17 Then the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area.
18 Jesus was preparing to leave in the boat. The man who was now free from the demons begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus did not allow the man to go. He said, “Go home to your family and friends. Tell them about all that the Lord did for you. Tell them how the Lord was good to you.”
20 So the man left and told the people in the Ten Towns about the great things Jesus did for him. Everyone was amazed.
Jesus Gives Life to a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(B)
21 Jesus went back to the other side of the lake in the boat. There, a large crowd of people gathered around him on the shore. 22 A leader of the synagogue came. His name was Jairus. He saw Jesus and bowed down before him. 23 He begged Jesus again and again, saying, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her. Then she will be healed and will live.”
24 So Jesus went with Jairus. Many people followed Jesus. They were pushing very close around him.
25 There among the people was a woman who had been bleeding for the past twelve years. 26 She had suffered very much. Many doctors had tried to help her, and all the money she had was spent, but she was not improving. In fact, her sickness was getting worse.
27 The woman heard about Jesus, so she followed him with the other people and touched his coat. 28 She thought, “If I can just touch his clothes, that will be enough to heal me.” 29 As soon as she touched his coat, her bleeding stopped. She felt that her body was healed from all the suffering. 30 Jesus immediately felt power go out from him, so he stopped and turned around. “Who touched my clothes?” he asked.
31 The followers said to Jesus, “There are so many people pushing against you. But you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
32 But Jesus continued looking for the one who touched him. 33 The woman knew that she was healed, so she came and bowed at Jesus’ feet. She was shaking with fear. She told Jesus the whole story. 34 He said to her, “Dear woman, you are made well because you believed. Go in peace. You will not suffer anymore.”
35 While Jesus was still there speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. They said, “Your daughter is dead. There is no need to bother the Teacher.”
36 But Jesus did not care what the men said. He said to the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 Jesus let only Peter, James, and John the brother of James go with him. 38 They went to the synagogue leader’s house, where Jesus saw many people crying loudly. There was a lot of confusion. 39 He entered the house and said, “Why are you people crying and making so much noise? This child is not dead. She is only sleeping.” 40 But everyone laughed at him.
Jesus told the people to leave the house. Then he went into the room where the child was. He brought the child’s father and mother and his three followers into the room with him. 41 Then Jesus held the girl’s hand and said to her, “Talitha, koum!” (This means “Little girl, I tell you to stand up!”) 42 The girl immediately stood up and began walking. (She was twelve years old.) The father and mother and the followers were amazed. 43 Jesus gave the father and mother very strict orders not to tell people about this. Then he told them to give the girl some food to eat.
