Jesus Raises a Widow's Son

¹¹ Soon afterward^[a] he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. ¹² As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, ^(A)the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. ¹³ And when the Lord saw her, ^(B)he had compassion on her and ^(C)said to her, “Do not weep.” ¹⁴ Then he came up and touched ^(D)the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, ^(E)arise.” ¹⁵ And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus^{[b] (F)}gave him to his mother. ¹⁶ Fear seized them all, and ^(G)they glorified God, saying, ^(H)“A great prophet has arisen among us!” and ^(I)“God has visited his people!” ¹⁷ And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

¹³ Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. ¹⁴ Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, ¹⁵ and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” ^16 (A)So Thomas, called the Twin,^[a] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, ^(B)that we may die with him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

¹⁷ Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb ^(C)four days. ¹⁸ Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles^[b] off, ¹⁹ and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary ^(D)to console them concerning their brother. ^20 (E)So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. ²¹ Martha said to ^(F)Jesus, “Lord, ^(G)if you had been here, my brother would not have died. ²² But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, ^(H)God will give you.” ²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” ^24 (I)Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in ^(J)the resurrection on the last day.” ²⁵ Jesus said to her, ^(K)“I am the resurrection and ^(L)the life.^[c] Whoever believes in me, ^(M)though he die, ^(N)yet shall he live, ²⁶ and everyone who lives and believes in me ^(O)shall never die. Do you believe this?” ²⁷ She said to him, “Yes, Lord; ^(P)I believe that ^(Q)you are the Christ, the Son of God, ^(R)who is coming into the world.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

^45 (A)Many of the Jews therefore, ^(B)who had come with Mary and ^(C)had seen what he did, believed in him, ⁴⁶ but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. ⁴⁷ So the chief priests and the Pharisees ^(D)gathered ^(E)the council and said, ^(F)“What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and ^(G)the Romans will come and take away both our ^(H)place and our nation.” ⁴⁹ But one of them, ^(I)Caiaphas, ^(J)who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. ⁵⁰ Nor do you understand that ^(K)it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” ⁵¹ He did not say this of his own accord, but ^(L)being high priest that year ^(M)he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, ⁵² and ^(N)not for the nation only, but also ^(O)to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. ⁵³ So from that day on they ^(P)made plans to put him to death.

⁵⁴ Jesus therefore ^(Q)no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

⁵⁵ Now ^(R)the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and ^(S)many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover ^(T)to purify themselves. ^56 (U)They were looking for^[a] Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” ⁵⁷ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
