The Jewish Leaders Plan to Kill Jesus(A)
22 It was almost time for the Jewish Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover. 2 The leading priests and teachers of the law wanted to kill Jesus. But they were trying to find a quiet way to do it, because they were afraid of what the people would do.
Judas Agrees to Help Jesus’ Enemies(B)
3 One of Jesus’ twelve apostles was named Judas Iscariot. Satan entered him, 4 and he went and talked with the leading priests and some of the soldiers who guarded the Temple. He talked to them about a way to hand Jesus over to them. 5 The priests were very happy about this. They promised to give Judas money for doing this. 6 He agreed. Then he waited for the best time to hand him over to them. He wanted to do it when no one was around to see it.
The Passover Meal(C)
7 The Day of Unleavened Bread[a] came. This was the day when the Jews always killed the lambs for the Passover. 8 Jesus said to Peter and John, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat.”
9 They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare the meal?”
He said to them, 10 “When you go into the city, you will see a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him. He will go into a house. 11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks that you please show us the room where he and his followers can eat the Passover meal.’ 12 Then the owner will show you a large room upstairs that is ready for us. Prepare the meal there.”
13 So Peter and John left. Everything happened the way Jesus said. So they prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord’s Supper(D)
14 The time came for them to eat the Passover meal. Jesus and the apostles were together at the table. 15 Jesus said to them, “I wanted very much to eat this Passover meal with you before I die. 16 I will never eat another Passover meal until it is given its full meaning in God’s kingdom.”
17 Then Jesus took a cup of wine. He gave thanks to God for it and said, “Take this cup and give it to everyone here. 18 I will never drink wine again until God’s kingdom comes.”
19 Then he took some bread and thanked God for it. He broke off some pieces, gave them to the apostles and said, “This bread is my body that I am giving for you. Eat this to remember me.” 20 In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup of wine and said, “This wine represents the new agreement from God to his people. It will begin when my blood is poured out for you.”[b]
Who Will Turn Against Jesus?
21 Jesus said, “But here on this table is the hand of the one who will hand me over to my enemies. 22 The Son of Man will do what God has planned. But it will be very bad for the one who hands over the Son of Man to be killed.”
23 Then the apostles asked each other, “Which one of us would do that?”
Be Like a Servant
24 Later, the apostles began to argue about which one of them was the most important. 25 But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the world rule over their people, and those who have authority over others want to be called ‘the great providers for the people.’ 26 But you must not be like that. The one with the most authority among you should act as if he is the least important. The one who leads should be like one who serves. 27 Who is more important: the one serving or the one sitting at the table being served? Everyone thinks it’s the one being served, right? But I have been with you as the one who serves.
28 “You men have stayed with me through many struggles. 29 So I give you authority to rule with me in the kingdom the Father has given me. 30 You will eat and drink at my table in that kingdom. You will sit on thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
Peter Will Be Tested and Fail(E)
31 “Satan has asked to test you men like a farmer tests his wheat. O Simon, Simon,[c] 32 I have prayed that you will not lose your faith! Help your brothers be stronger when you come back to me.”
33 But Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, I am ready to go to jail with you. I will even die with you!”
34 But Jesus said, “Peter, before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say you don’t know me. You will say this three times.”
Be Ready for Trouble
35 Then Jesus said to the apostles, “Remember when I sent you out without money, a bag, or sandals? Did you need anything?”
The apostles said, “No.”
36 Jesus said to them, “But now if you have money or a bag, carry that with you. If you don’t have a sword, sell your coat and buy one. 37 The Scriptures say,
‘He was considered a criminal.’ (F)
This Scripture must happen. It was written about me, and it is happening now.”
38 The followers said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.”
Jesus said to them, “That’s enough.”[d]
Jesus Prays Alone(G)
39-40 Jesus left the city and went to the Mount of Olives. His followers went with him. (He went there often.) He said to his followers, “Pray for strength against temptation.”
41 Then Jesus went about 50 steps away from them. He knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, please don’t make me drink from this cup.[e] But do what you want, not what I want.” 43 Then an angel from heaven came to help him. 44 Jesus was full of pain; he struggled hard in prayer. Sweat dripped from his face like drops of blood falling to the ground.[f] 45 When he finished praying, he went to his followers. He found them asleep, worn out from their grieving. 46 Jesus said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray for strength against temptation.”
Jesus Is Arrested(H)
47 While Jesus was speaking, a crowd came up. It was led by Judas, one of the twelve apostles. He came over to Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you using the kiss of friendship to hand over the Son of Man to his enemies?” 49 The followers of Jesus were standing there too. They saw what was happening and said to Jesus, “Lord, should we use our swords?” 50 And one of them did use his sword. He cut off the right ear of the servant of the high priest.
51 Jesus said, “Stop!” Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed him.
52 Jesus spoke to the group that came to arrest him. They were the leading priests, the older Jewish leaders, and the Jewish soldiers. He said to them, “Why did you come out here with swords and clubs? Do you think I am a criminal? 53 I was with you every day in the Temple area. Why didn’t you try to arrest me there? But this is your time—the time when darkness rules.”
Peter Is Afraid to Say He Knows Jesus(I)
54 They arrested Jesus and took him away to the house of the high priest. Peter followed Jesus but stayed back at a distance. 55 The soldiers started a fire in the middle of the yard and sat together. Peter sat with them. 56 A servant girl saw him sitting there. She could see because of the light from the fire. She looked closely at Peter’s face. Then she said, “This man was also with Jesus.”
57 But Peter said this was not true. He said, “Lady, I don’t know him.” 58 A short time later, someone else saw Peter and said, “You are also one of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 About an hour later, another man said, “It’s true. I’m sure this man was with him, because he is from Galilee.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about!”
Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked into Peter’s eyes. And Peter remembered what the Lord had said, “Before the rooster crows in the morning, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” 62 Then Peter went outside and cried bitterly.
The Guards Treat Jesus Badly(J)
63 The men guarding Jesus made fun of him and beat him. 64 They covered his eyes so that he could not see them. Then they hit him and said, “Be a prophet[g] and tell us who hit you!” 65 And they shouted all kinds of insults at him.
Jesus Before the Jewish Leaders(K)
66 The next morning, the older leaders of the people, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law came together. They led Jesus away to their high council. 67 They said, “If you are the Messiah, then tell us that you are.”
Jesus said to them, “If I tell you I am the Messiah, you will not believe me. 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But beginning now, the Son of Man will sit at the right side of God All-Powerful.”
70 They all said, “Then are you the Son of God?” Jesus said to them, “You are right in saying that I am.”
71 They said, “Why do we need witnesses now? We all heard what he said!”

22 Es nahte aber das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote, das man Passah nennt.
2 Und die obersten Priester und Schriftgelehrten suchten, wie sie ihn umbringen könnten; denn sie fürchteten das Volk.
3 Es fuhr aber der Satan in Judas, der mit Beinamen Ischariot genannt wird, welcher aus der Zahl der Zwölf war.
4 Und er ging hin und besprach mit den obersten Priestern und den Hauptleuten[a], wie er ihn an sie ausliefern wollte.
5 Und sie waren erfreut und kamen überein, ihm Geld zu geben.
6 Und er versprach es und suchte eine gute Gelegenheit, um ihn ohne Volksauflauf an sie auszuliefern.
Das letzte Passahmahl
7 Es kam aber der Tag der ungesäuerten Brote, an dem man das Passah schlachten musste.
8 Und er sandte Petrus und Johannes und sprach: Geht hin, bereitet uns das Passah, damit wir es essen können!
9 Sie aber sprachen zu ihm: Wo willst du, dass wir es bereiten?
10 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Siehe, wenn ihr in die Stadt hineinkommt, so wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der einen Wasserkrug trägt; dem folgt in das Haus, wo er hineingeht,
11 und sprecht zu dem Hausherrn: Der Meister lässt dir sagen: Wo ist das Gastzimmer, in dem ich mit meinen Jüngern das Passah essen kann?
12 Und jener wird euch einen großen, mit Polstern ausgelegten Obersaal zeigen; dort bereitet es zu!
13 Sie gingen hin und fanden es, wie er ihnen gesagt hatte; und sie bereiteten das Passah.
14 Und als die Stunde kam, setzte er sich zu Tisch und die zwölf Apostel mit ihm.
15 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Mich hat herzlich verlangt,[b] dieses Passah mit euch zu essen, ehe ich leide.
16 Denn ich sage euch: Ich werde künftig nicht mehr davon essen, bis es erfüllt sein wird im Reich Gottes.
17 Und er nahm den Kelch, dankte und sprach: Nehmt diesen und teilt ihn unter euch!
18 Denn ich sage euch: Ich werde nicht mehr von dem Gewächs des Weinstocks trinken, bis das Reich Gottes gekommen ist.
Die Einsetzung des Mahles des Herrn
19 Und er nahm das Brot, dankte, brach es, gab es ihnen und sprach: Das ist mein Leib, der für euch gegeben wird; das tut zu meinem Gedächtnis!
20 Desgleichen [nahm er] auch den Kelch nach dem Mahl und sprach: Dieser Kelch ist der neue Bund[c] in meinem Blut, das für euch vergossen wird.
Jesus sagt den Verrat voraus
21 Doch siehe, die Hand dessen, der mich verrät, ist mit mir auf dem Tisch.
22 Und der Sohn des Menschen geht zwar dahin, wie es bestimmt ist; aber wehe dem Menschen, durch den er verraten wird!
23 Und sie fingen an, sich untereinander zu befragen, welcher von ihnen es wohl wäre, der dies tun würde.
Vom Herrschen und vom Dienen
24 Es entstand aber auch ein Streit unter ihnen, wer von ihnen als der Größte zu gelten habe.
25 Er aber sagte zu ihnen: Die Könige der Heidenvölker herrschen über sie, und ihre Gewalthaber nennt man Wohltäter.
26 Ihr aber sollt nicht so sein; sondern der Größte unter euch soll sein wie der Jüngste, und der Führende wie der Dienende.
27 Denn wer ist größer: der, welcher zu Tisch sitzt, oder der Dienende? Ist es nicht der, welcher zu Tisch sitzt? Ich aber bin mitten unter euch wie der Dienende.
28 Ihr aber seid die, welche bei mir ausgeharrt haben in meinen Anfechtungen.
29 Und so übergebe ich euch ein Königtum, wie es mir mein Vater übergeben hat,
30 sodass ihr an meinem Tisch in meinem Reich essen und trinken und auf Thronen sitzen sollt, um die zwölf Stämme Israels zu richten.
Jesu Gebet für Petrus. Die Ankündigung der Verleugnung
31 Es sprach aber der Herr: Simon, Simon, siehe, der Satan hat euch begehrt, um euch zu sichten wie den Weizen;
32 ich aber habe für dich gebetet, dass dein Glaube nicht aufhöre; und wenn du einst umgekehrt bist[d], so stärke deine Brüder!
33 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Herr, ich bin bereit, mit dir ins Gefängnis und in den Tod zu gehen!
34 Er aber sprach: Ich sage dir, Petrus: Der Hahn wird heute nicht krähen, ehe du dreimal geleugnet hast, dass du mich kennst!
35 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Als ich euch aussandte ohne Beutel und Tasche und Schuhe, hat euch etwas gemangelt? Sie sprachen: Nichts!
36 Nun sprach er zu ihnen: Aber jetzt, wer einen Beutel hat, der nehme ihn, ebenso auch die Tasche; und wer es nicht hat, der verkaufe sein Gewand und kaufe ein Schwert.
37 Denn ich sage euch: Auch dies muss noch an mir erfüllt werden, was geschrieben steht: »Und er ist unter die Gesetzlosen gerechnet worden«.[e] Denn was von mir [geschrieben steht], das geht in Erfüllung!
38 Sie sprachen: Herr, siehe, hier sind zwei Schwerter! Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Es ist genug!
Gethsemane
39 Und er ging hinaus und begab sich nach seiner Gewohnheit an den Ölberg. Es folgten ihm aber auch seine Jünger.
40 Und als er an den Ort gekommen war, sprach er zu ihnen: Betet, dass ihr nicht in Versuchung kommt!
41 Und er riss sich von ihnen los, ungefähr einen Steinwurf weit, kniete nieder, betete
42 und sprach: Vater, wenn du diesen Kelch von mir nehmen willst — doch nicht mein, sondern dein Wille geschehe!
43 Da erschien ihm ein Engel vom Himmel und stärkte ihn.
44 Und er war in ringendem Kampf und betete inbrünstiger; sein Schweiß wurde aber wie Blutstropfen, die auf die Erde fielen.
45 Und als er vom Gebet aufstand und zu seinen Jüngern kam, fand er sie schlafend vor Traurigkeit.
46 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was schlaft ihr? Steht auf und betet, damit ihr nicht in Versuchung kommt!
Die Gefangennahme Jesu
47 Während er aber noch redete, siehe, da kam eine Schar, und der, welcher Judas hieß, einer der Zwölf, ging vor ihnen her und näherte sich Jesus, um ihn zu küssen.
48 Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Judas, verrätst du den Sohn des Menschen mit einem Kuss?
49 Als nun seine Begleiter sahen, was da geschehen sollte, sprachen sie zu ihm: Herr, sollen wir mit dem Schwert dreinschlagen?
50 Und einer von ihnen schlug den Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm sein rechtes Ohr ab.
51 Da antwortete Jesus und sprach: Lasst ab davon! Und er rührte sein Ohr an und heilte ihn.
52 Es sprach aber Jesus zu den obersten Priestern und Hauptleuten des Tempels und zu den Ältesten, die an ihn herangetreten waren: Wie gegen einen Räuber seid ihr ausgezogen mit Schwertern und mit Stöcken!
53 Als ich täglich bei euch im Tempel war, habt ihr die Hände nicht gegen mich ausgestreckt. Aber dies ist eure Stunde und die Macht der Finsternis.
Die Verleugnung durch Petrus
54 Nachdem sie ihn nun festgenommen hatten, führten sie ihn ab und brachten ihn in das Haus des Hohenpriesters. Petrus aber folgte von ferne.
55 Da sie aber mitten im Hof ein Feuer angezündet hatten und beisammensaßen, setzte sich Petrus mitten unter sie.
56 Es sah ihn aber eine Magd beim Feuer sitzen, schaute ihn an und sprach: Auch dieser war mit ihm!
57 Er aber verleugnete ihn und sprach: Frau, ich kenne ihn nicht!
58 Und bald danach sah ihn ein anderer und sprach: Du bist auch einer von ihnen! Petrus aber sprach: Mensch, ich bin"s nicht!
59 Und nach einer Weile von ungefähr einer Stunde bekräftigte es ein anderer und sprach: Wahrhaftig, der war auch mit ihm; denn er ist ein Galiläer!
60 Petrus aber sprach: Mensch, ich weiß nicht, was du sagst! Und sogleich, während er noch redete, krähte der Hahn.
61 Und der Herr wandte sich um und sah Petrus an. Da erinnerte sich Petrus an das Wort des Herrn, das er zu ihm gesprochen hatte: Ehe der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen!
62 Und Petrus ging hinaus und weinte bitterlich.
Jesus vor dem Hohen Rat
63 Die Männer aber, die Jesus festhielten, verspotteten und misshandelten ihn;
64 und nachdem sie ihn verhüllt hatten, schlugen sie ihn ins Angesicht und fragten ihn und sprachen: Weissage uns, wer ist"s, der dich geschlagen hat?
65 Und viele andere Lästerungen sprachen sie gegen ihn aus.
66 Und als es Tag geworden war, versammelten sich die Ältesten des Volkes, die obersten Priester und Schriftgelehrten, und führten ihn vor ihren Hohen Rat; und sie sprachen:
67 Bist du der Christus? Sage es uns! Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ich es euch sagte, so würdet ihr es nicht glauben;
68 wenn ich aber auch fragte, so würdet ihr mir nicht antworten, noch mich loslassen.
69 Von nun an wird der Sohn des Menschen sitzen zur Rechten der Macht Gottes.
70 Da sprachen sie alle: Bist du also der Sohn Gottes? Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Ihr sagt es, denn ich bin es!
71 Da sprachen sie: Was brauchen wir ein weiteres Zeugnis? Denn wir haben es selbst aus seinem Mund gehört!

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(A)
22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(B) 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(C) for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan(D) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(E) one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(F) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(G) 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper(H)(I)(J)(K)(L)
7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(M) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(N) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(O) So they prepared the Passover.
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(P) reclined at the table.(Q) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(R) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(S)
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(T) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(U) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(V) 22 The Son of Man(W) will go as it has been decreed.(X) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(Y) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(Z) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(AA) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(AB) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(AC) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(AD) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(AE)
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(AF) to sift all of you as wheat.(AG) 32 But I have prayed for you,(AH) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(AI)
33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(AJ)
34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(AK) did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b];(AL) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(AM)
39 Jesus went out as usual(AN) to the Mount of Olives,(AO) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(AP) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(AQ) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(AR) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(AS) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(AT) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(AU)
Jesus Arrested(AV)
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(AW) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(AX) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(AY) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(AZ)—when darkness reigns.”(BA)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BB)
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(BC) Peter followed at a distance.(BD) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(BE)
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(BF) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(BG) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The Guards Mock Jesus(BH)
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(BI)

66 At daybreak the council(BM) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(BN) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(BO) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(BP)
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(BQ)
He replied, “You say that I am.”(BR)
71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
