A Plot To Kill Jesus
(Matthew 26.1-5,14,16; Mark 14.1,2,10,11; John 11.45-53)
22 (A) The Festival of Thin Bread, also called Passover, was near. 2 The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses were looking for a way to get rid of Jesus, because they were afraid of what the people might do. 3 Then Satan entered the heart of Judas Iscariot,[a] who was one of the twelve apostles.
4 Judas went to talk with the chief priests and the officers of the temple police about how he could help them arrest Jesus. 5 They were very pleased and offered to pay Judas some money. 6 He agreed and started looking for a good chance to betray Jesus when the crowds were not around.
Jesus Eats with His Disciples
(Matthew 26.17-25; Mark 14.12-21; John 13.21-30)
7 The day had come for the Festival of Thin Bread, and it was time to kill the Passover lambs. 8 So Jesus said to Peter and John, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat.”
9 But they asked, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
10 Jesus told them, “As you go into the city, you will meet a man carrying a jar of water.[b] Follow him into the house 11 and say to the owner, ‘Our teacher wants to know where he can eat the Passover meal with his disciples.’ 12 The owner will take you upstairs and show you a large room ready for you to use. Prepare the meal there.”
13 Peter and John left. They found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord's Supper
(Matthew 26.26-30; Mark 14.22-26; 1 Corinthians 11.23-25)
14 When the time came for Jesus and the apostles to eat, 15 he said to them, “I have very much wanted to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. 16 I tell you I will not eat another Passover meal until it is finally eaten in God's kingdom.”
17 Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and gave thanks to God. Then he told the apostles, “Take this wine and share it with each other. 18 I tell you that I will not drink any more wine until God's kingdom comes.”
19 Jesus took some bread in his hands and gave thanks for it. He broke the bread and handed it to his apostles. Then he said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Eat this as a way of remembering me!”
20 (B) After the meal he took another cup of wine in his hands. Then he said, “This is my blood. It is poured out for you, and with it God makes his new agreement. 21 (C) The one who will betray me is here at the table with me! 22 The Son of Man will die in the way that has been decided for him, but it will be terrible for the one who betrays him!”
23 Then the apostles started arguing about who would ever do such a thing.
An Argument about Greatness
24 (D) The apostles got into an argument about which one of them was the greatest. 25 (E) So Jesus told them:
Foreign kings order their people around, and powerful rulers call themselves everyone's friends.[c] 26 (F) But don't be like them. The most important one of you should be like the least important, and your leader should be like a servant. 27 (G) Who do people think is the greatest, a person who is served or one who serves? Isn't it the one who is served? But I have been with you as a servant.
28 You have stayed with me in all my troubles. 29 So I will give you the right to rule as kings, just as my Father has given me the right to rule as a king. 30 (H) You will eat and drink with me in my kingdom, and you will each sit on a throne to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus' Disciples Will Be Tested
(Matthew 26.31-35; Mark 14.27-31; John 13.36-38)
31 Jesus said, “Simon, listen to me! Satan has demanded the right to test each one of you, as a farmer does when he separates wheat from the husks.[d] 32 But Simon, I have prayed that your faith will be strong. And when you have come back to me, help the others.”
33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to jail and even to die with you.”
34 Jesus replied, “Peter, I tell you that before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.”
Moneybags, Traveling Bags, and Swords
35 (I) Jesus asked his disciples, “When I sent you out without a moneybag or a traveling bag or sandals, did you need anything?”
“No!” they answered.
36 Jesus told them, “But now, if you have a moneybag, take it with you. Also take a traveling bag, and if you don't have a sword,[e] sell some of your clothes and buy one. 37 (J) Do this because the Scriptures say, ‘He was considered a criminal.’ This was written about me, and it will soon come true.”
38 The disciples said, “Lord, here are two swords!”
“Enough of that!” Jesus replied.
Jesus Prays
(Matthew 26.36-46; Mark 14.32-42)
39 Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, as he often did, and his disciples went with him. 40 When they got there, he told them, “Pray that you won't be tested.”
41 Jesus walked on a little way before he knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you will, please don't make me suffer by drinking from this cup.[f] But do what you want, and not what I want.”
43 Then an angel from heaven came to help him. 44 Jesus was in great pain and prayed so sincerely that his sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood.[g]
45 Jesus got up from praying and went over to his disciples. They were asleep and worn out from being so sad. 46 He said to them, “Why are you asleep? Wake up and pray that you won't be tested.”
Jesus Is Arrested
(Matthew 26.47-56; Mark 14.43-50; John 18.3-11)
47 While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd came up. It was led by Judas, one of the twelve apostles. He went over to Jesus and greeted him with a kiss.[h]
48 Jesus asked Judas, “Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus' disciples saw what was about to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we attack them with a sword?” 50 One of the disciples even struck at the high priest's servant with his sword and cut off the servant's right ear.
51 “Enough of that!” Jesus said. Then he touched the servant's ear and healed it.
52 Jesus spoke to the chief priests, the temple police, and the leaders who had come to arrest him. He said, “Why do you come out with swords and clubs and treat me like a criminal? 53 (K) I was with you every day in the temple, and you didn't arrest me. But this is your time, and darkness[i] is in control.”
Peter Says He Doesn't Know Jesus
(Matthew 26.57,58,67-75; Mark 14.53,54,66-72; John 18.12-18,25-27)
54 Jesus was arrested and led away to the house of the high priest, while Peter followed at a distance. 55 Some people built a fire in the middle of the courtyard and were sitting around it. Peter sat there with them, 56 and a servant girl saw him. Then after she had looked at him carefully, she said, “This man was with Jesus!”
57 Peter said, “Woman, I don't even know that man!”
58 A little later someone else saw Peter and said, “You are one of them!”
“No, I'm not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another man insisted, “This man must have been with Jesus. They both come from Galilee.”
60 Peter replied, “I don't know what you are talking about!” Right then, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered that the Lord had said, “Before a rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will say three times that you don't know me.” 62 Then Peter went out and cried bitterly.
63 The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him and beat him. 64 They put a blindfold on him and said, “Tell us who struck you!” 65 They kept on insulting Jesus in many other ways.
Jesus Is Questioned by the Council
(Matthew 26.59-66; Mark 14.55-64; John 18.19-24)
66 At daybreak the nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses got together and brought Jesus before their council. 67 They said, “Tell us! Are you the Messiah?”
Jesus replied, “If I said so, you wouldn't believe me. 68 And if I asked you a question, you wouldn't answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right side of God All-Powerful.”
70 Then they asked, “Are you the Son of God?”[j]
Jesus answered, “You say I am!”[k]
71 They replied, “Why do we need more witnesses? He said it himself!”

- 22.10 a man carrying a jar of water: A male slave carrying water would probably mean that the family was rich.
- 22.25 everyone's friends: This translates a Greek word that rulers sometimes used as a title for themselves or for special friends.

- 22.36 moneybag … traveling bag … sword: These were things that someone would take on a dangerous journey. Jesus was telling his disciples to be ready for anything that might happen. They seem to have understood what he meant (see 22.49-51).
- 22.42 drinking from this cup: In the Scriptures “to drink from a cup” sometimes means to suffer.
- 22.43,44 Then an angel … like drops of blood: Verses 43,44 are not in some manuscripts.
- 22.47 greeted him with a kiss: It was the custom for people to greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.
- 22.53 darkness: Darkness stands for the power of the devil.
- 22.70 Son of God: This was one of the titles used for the kings of Israel.
- 22.70 You say I am: Or “That's what you say.”

Judas acuerda traicionar a Jesús
22 Se acercaba la fiesta de los panes sin levadura, también llamada Pascua. 2 Los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley buscaban la manera de acabar con Jesús, pero le tenían miedo a la gente.
3 Entonces entró Satanás en Judas, uno de los doce, al que llamaban Iscariote. 4 Este fue a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los capitanes del templo para ponerse de acuerdo con ellos en cómo les entregaría a Jesús. 5 Ellos se alegraron y prometieron darle dinero. 6 Judas aceptó, y comenzó a buscar la oportunidad de entregarles a Jesús cuando no hubiera nadie.
La última cena
7 Cuando llegó el día de la fiesta de los panes sin levadura, en que se sacrificaba el cordero de la Pascua, 8 Jesús llamó a Pedro y a Juan, y les dijo: —Vayan y preparen todo para que comamos la Pascua.
9 Ellos le preguntaron:
―¿Dónde quieres que la preparemos?
10 Él les contestó:
―Al entrar ustedes en la ciudad, encontrarán a un hombre que lleva un cántaro de agua. Síganlo hasta la casa en que entre, 11 y díganle al dueño de la casa: “El Maestro quiere saber cuál es la sala donde va a comer la Pascua con sus discípulos”. 12 Él les mostrará una sala grande y amueblada, en el piso de arriba. Preparen allí la cena.
13 Ellos se fueron y encontraron todo tal como Jesús les había dicho. Así que prepararon la Pascua. 14 Cuando llegó la hora, Jesús y sus apóstoles se sentaron a la mesa.
15 Él les dijo:
―Había deseado muchísimo comer esta Pascua con ustedes, antes que sufra. 16 Pues les aseguro que no volveré a comerla hasta que tenga su cumplimiento en el reino de Dios.
17 Luego tomó la copa, dio gracias y dijo:
―Tomen esto y repártanlo entre ustedes. 18 Pues yo les aseguro que no volveré a beber del fruto de la vid hasta que venga el reino de Dios.
19 Entonces tomó el pan, dio gracias por él, lo partió, se lo dio a ellos y les dijo:
―Este pan es mi cuerpo, que es entregado por ustedes. Hagan esto para que se acuerden de mí.
20 Después de la cena, tomó la copa y dijo:
―Esta copa es el nuevo pacto en mi sangre que es derramada por todos ustedes. 21 Pero la mano del que va a traicionarme, está aquí con la mía, sobre la mesa. 22 Es verdad que el Hijo del hombre irá por el camino que le está determinado, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo traiciona!
23 Entonces comenzaron a preguntarse unos a otros quién de ellos haría tal cosa. 24 Y empezaron a discutir sobre cuál de ellos sería el más importante. 25 Jesús les dijo:
―Los reyes de las naciones son unos tiranos con sus súbditos. Y aun así, ellos dicen de sí mismos que le hacen bien a la gente. 26 Pero entre ustedes no debe ser así. El más importante debe comportarse como el menor, y el que manda como el que sirve. 27 Porque, ¿quién es más importante?, ¿el que está sentado a la mesa o el que sirve? ¿No es el que está sentado a la mesa? Sin embargo, yo estoy entre ustedes como el que sirve. 28 Ustedes han estado siempre a mi lado en mis pruebas. 29 Por eso, yo mismo les doy un reino como mi Padre me lo ha dado a mí. 30 En mi reino van a comer y a beber en mi mesa y se sentarán en tronos para juzgar a las doce tribus de Israel.
31 »Simón, Simón, date cuenta de que Satanás ha pedido zarandearlos a ustedes como si fueran trigo; 32 pero yo he rogado por ti, para que tu fe no falle. Y cuando eso pase y tú te hayas vuelto a mí, fortalece a tus hermanos».
33 Pedro respondió:
―Señor, estoy dispuesto a ir contigo a la cárcel y aun a la muerte.
34 Él le dijo:
―Pedro, pues te digo que hoy mismo, antes de que el gallo cante, tres veces dirás que no me conoces.
35 Luego, Jesús les dijo a todos:
―Cuando los envié sin dinero ni bolsa ni sandalias, ¿les hizo falta algo?
Respondieron:
―Nada.
36 ―Pero ahora les digo: El que tenga dinero, que lo lleve, y también el que tenga una bolsa, que la lleve. El que no tenga espada, que venda su manto y se compre una. 37 Les digo que tiene que cumplirse en mí lo que está escrito: “A él lo contaron como otro malvado más”. Y eso que se ha escrito de mí, se cumplirá.
38 Los discípulos le dijeron:
―Señor, mira, aquí hay dos espadas.
Y él les contestó:
―¡Basta!
Jesús ora en el monte de los Olivos
39 Jesús salió de la ciudad acompañado por sus discípulos y se dirigió al monte de los Olivos, como era su costumbre. 40 Cuando llegaron al lugar, les dijo: «Oren para que no caigan en tentación».
41 Entonces se alejó de ellos a una buena distancia, se arrodilló y se puso a orar: 42 «Padre, si quieres, no me hagas beber este trago amargo. Pero que no se haga lo que yo quiero, sino lo que tú quieres».
43 En ese momento, un ángel del cielo se le apareció para darle fortaleza. 44 Estaba tan angustiado, que se puso a orar con más intensidad, y su sudor caía a tierra como grandes gotas de sangre. 45 Cuando terminó de orar, volvió adonde estaban los discípulos y los encontró dormidos, estaban agotados por la tristeza.
46 Les dijo: «¿Por qué están durmiendo? Levántense y oren para que no caigan en tentación».
Arresto de Jesús
47 Mientras Jesús decía esto, llegó mucha gente y al frente de ellos iba Judas, que era uno de los doce. Este se acercó para besar a Jesús.
48 Pero Jesús le preguntó:
―Judas, ¿con un beso traicionas al Hijo del hombre?
49 Los discípulos, al ver lo que pasaba, le dijeron:
―Señor, ¿atacamos con la espada?
50 Y uno de ellos le cortó la oreja derecha al sirviente del jefe de los sacerdotes.
51 Jesús les ordenó:
―¡Basta ya, déjenlos!
Entonces tocó la oreja del hombre y lo sanó.
52 Luego les dijo a los jefes de los sacerdotes, a los capitanes del templo y a los ancianos que habían venido a llevárselo: —¿Por qué vienen contra mí con espadas y palos como si yo fuera un bandido? 53 Yo estaba con ustedes en el templo todos los días, y sin embargo, no se atrevieron a arrestarme. Pero esta es ya la hora de ustedes, hora en que reinan las tinieblas.
Pedro niega a Jesús
54 Entonces arrestaron a Jesús y lo llevaron a la casa del jefe de los sacerdotes. Pedro los seguía de lejos. 55 Allí, en medio del patio, encendieron una fogata y se sentaron alrededor de ella. Pedro también se sentó con ellos. 56 Una sirvienta, al verlo sentado junto al fuego, se le quedó mirando y dijo:
―¡Este estaba con él!
57 Pero él lo negó, diciendo:
―Mujer, yo no lo conozco.
58 Poco después alguien lo vio también y dijo:
―Tú también eres uno de ellos.
Pedro contestó:
―¡No, hombre, no lo soy!
59 Como una hora después, otro insistió diciendo:
―Seguro que este estaba con él, pues es de Galilea.
60 Pedro respondió:
―¡Hombre, no sé de qué hablas!
Y mientras aun estaba hablando, el gallo cantó.
61 El Señor se volvió y miró a Pedro. Entonces Pedro se acordó de que el Señor le había dicho: «Hoy mismo, antes de que el gallo cante tres veces, dirás que no me conoces». 62 Y Pedro salió de allí a llorar amargamente.
Los soldados se burlan de Jesús
63 Los hombres que vigilaban a Jesús se burlaban de él y lo golpeaban. 64 Le vendaron los ojos y luego le decían:
―¡Adivina quién te pegó!
65 Y lo insultaban diciéndole muchas otras cosas.
Jesús ante Pilato y Herodes
66 Cuando amaneció, se reunieron los ancianos del pueblo, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley y llevaron a Jesús ante el Consejo. Entonces le preguntaron:
67 ―Dinos, ¿eres tú el Cristo?
Jesús les contestó:
―Si les dijera que sí, ustedes no me lo creerían. 68 Y si les hiciera preguntas, no me contestarían. 69 Pero de ahora en adelante, el Hijo del hombre estará sentado a la derecha del Dios Todopoderoso.
70 Todos le preguntaron:
―Entonces, ¿eres tú el Hijo de Dios?
Él les contestó:
―Ustedes mismos lo han dicho.
71 Entonces ellos dijeron:
―¿Qué más testigos necesitamos? Ya lo oímos de sus propios labios.

Plans to Kill Jesus
22 It was almost time for the Jewish Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover Feast. 2 The leading priests and teachers of the law were trying to find a way to kill Jesus. But they were afraid of the people.
3 One of Jesus’ 12 apostles was named Judas Iscariot. Satan entered Judas, and he went to 4 the leading priests and some of the soldiers who guarded the Temple. He talked to them about a way to give Jesus to them. 5 They were pleased and promised to give Judas money. 6 Judas agreed. Then he waited for the best time to turn Jesus over to them without the crowd knowing it.
Preparation of the Passover Meal
7 The Day of Unleavened Bread came. This was the day the Passover lambs had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus said to Peter and John, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us to eat.”
9 They asked, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
Jesus said to them, 10 “Listen! After you go into the city, you will see a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him into the house that he enters. 11 Tell the person who owns that house, ‘The Teacher asks that you please show us the room where he and his followers may eat the Passover meal.’ 12 Then he will show you a large room upstairs. This room is ready for you. Prepare the Passover meal there.”
13 So Peter and John left. Everything happened as Jesus had said. So they prepared the Passover meal.
The Lord’s Supper
14 When the time came, Jesus and the apostles were sitting at the table. 15 He said to them, “I wanted very much to eat this Passover meal with you before I die. 16 I will never eat another Passover meal until it is given its true meaning in the kingdom of God.”
17 Then Jesus took a cup. He gave thanks to God for it and said, “Take this cup and give it to everyone here. 18 I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine[a] until God’s kingdom comes.”
19 Then Jesus took some bread. He thanked God for it, broke it, and gave it to the apostles. Then Jesus said, “This bread is my body[b] that I am giving for you. Do this to remember me.” 20 In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and said, “This cup shows the new agreement that God makes with his people. This new agreement begins with my blood which is poured out for you.”
Who Will Turn Against Jesus?
21 Jesus said, “One of you will turn against me. His hand is by my hand on the table. 22 The Son of Man will do what God has planned. But how terrible it will be for that man who gives the Son of Man to be killed.”
23 Then the apostles asked each other, “Which one of us would do that to Jesus?”
Be Like a Servant
24 Then the apostles began to argue about which one of them was the most important. 25 But Jesus said to them, “The kings of the world rule over their people. Men who have authority over others are called ‘very important.’ 26 But you must not be like that. The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the leader should be like the servant. 27 Who is more important: the one sitting at the table or the one serving him? You think the one at the table is more important. But I am like a servant among you!
28 “You men have stayed with me through many struggles. 29 My Father has given me the power to rule. I also give you authority to rule with me. 30 You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will sit on thrones and judge the 12 tribes of Israel.
Don’t Lose Your Faith!
31 “Satan has asked to test all of you as a farmer tests his wheat. Simon, Simon, 32 I have prayed that you will not lose your faith! Help your brothers be stronger when you come back to me.”
33 But Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you. I will even die with you!”
34 But Jesus said, “Peter, before the rooster crows tonight, you will say you don’t know me. You will say this three times!”
Be Ready for Trouble
35 Then Jesus said to the apostles, “When I sent you out without money, a bag, or sandals, did you need anything?”
They said, “No.”
36 He said to them, “But now if you have money or a bag, carry that with you. If you don’t have a sword, sell your coat and buy one. 37 The Scripture says, ‘He was treated like a criminal.’[c] This scripture must have its full meaning. It was written about me, and it is happening now.”
38 The followers said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords!”
He said to them, “That’s enough.”
Jesus Prays Alone
39-40 Jesus left the city and went to the Mount of Olives. His followers went with him. (Jesus went there often.) He said to his followers, “Pray for strength against temptation.”
41 Then Jesus went about a stone’s throw away from them. He kneeled down and prayed, 42 “Father, if it is what you want, then let me not have this cup[d] of suffering. But do what you want, not what I want.” 43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him to help him. 44 Jesus was full of pain; he prayed even more. Sweat dripped from his face as if he were bleeding. 45 When he finished praying, he went to his followers. They were asleep. (Their sadness had made them very tired.) 46 Jesus said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray for strength against temptation.”
Jesus Is Arrested
47 While Jesus was speaking, a crowd came up. One of the 12 apostles was leading them. He was Judas. He came close to Jesus so that he could kiss him.
48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you using the kiss to give the Son of Man to his enemies?”
49 The followers of Jesus were standing there too. They saw what was happening. They said to Jesus, “Lord, should we use our swords?” 50 And one of them did use his sword. He cut off the right ear of the servant of the high priest.
51 Jesus said, “Stop!” Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed him.
52 Those who came to arrest Jesus were the leading priests, the soldiers who guarded the Temple, and the Jewish elders. Jesus said to them, “Why did you come out here with swords and sticks? Do you think I am a criminal? 53 I was with you every day in the Temple. Why didn’t you try to arrest me there? But this is your time—the time when darkness rules.”
Peter Says He Doesn’t Know Jesus
54 They arrested Jesus and took him away. They brought him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed them, but he did not go near Jesus. 55 The soldiers started a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat together. Peter sat with them. 56 A servant girl saw Peter sitting there near the light. She looked closely at Peter’s face and said, “This man was also with him!”
57 But Peter said this was not true. He said, “Girl, I don’t know him.”
58 A short time later, another person saw Peter and said, “You are also one of them.”
But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 About an hour later, another man insisted, “It is true! This man was with him. He is from Galilee!”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about!”
Immediately, while Peter was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered what the Lord had said: “Before the rooster crows tonight, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” 62 Then Peter went outside and cried with much pain in his heart.
The People Laugh at Jesus
63-64 Some men were guarding Jesus. They made fun of him like this: They covered his eyes so that he could not see them. Then they hit him and said, “Prove that you are a prophet, and tell us who hit you!” 65 The men said many cruel things to Jesus.
Jesus Before the Leaders
66 When day came, the elders of the people, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law came together. They led Jesus away to their highest court. 67 They said, “If you are the Christ, then tell us that you are!”
Jesus said to them, “If I tell you I am the Christ, you will not believe me. 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But beginning now, the Son of Man will sit at the right hand of the powerful God.”
70 They all said, “Then are you the Son of God?”
Jesus said to them, “Yes, you are right when you say that I am.”
71 They said, “Why do we need witnesses now? We ourselves heard him say this!”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(A)
22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(B) 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(C) for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan(D) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(E) one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(F) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(G) 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper(H)(I)(J)(K)(L)
7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(M) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(N) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(O) So they prepared the Passover.
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(P) reclined at the table.(Q) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(R) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(S)
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(T) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(U) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(V) 22 The Son of Man(W) will go as it has been decreed.(X) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(Y) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(Z) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(AA) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(AB) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(AC) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(AD) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(AE)
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(AF) to sift all of you as wheat.(AG) 32 But I have prayed for you,(AH) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(AI)
33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(AJ)
34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(AK) did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b];(AL) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(AM)
39 Jesus went out as usual(AN) to the Mount of Olives,(AO) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(AP) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(AQ) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(AR) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(AS) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(AT) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(AU)
Jesus Arrested(AV)
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(AW) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(AX) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(AY) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(AZ)—when darkness reigns.”(BA)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BB)
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(BC) Peter followed at a distance.(BD) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(BE)
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(BF) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(BG) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The Guards Mock Jesus(BH)
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(BI)
Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(BJ)(BK)(BL)
66 At daybreak the council(BM) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(BN) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(BO) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(BP)
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(BQ)
He replied, “You say that I am.”(BR)
71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
