Healing of a Man on the Sabbath
14 One Sabbath, (A)when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were (B)watching him carefully. 2 And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. 3 And Jesus responded to (C)the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (D)“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” 4 But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. 5 And he said to them, (E)“Which of you, having a son[a] or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” 6 (F)And they could not reply to these things.
The Parable of the Wedding Feast
7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed (G)how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, (H)so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For (I)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
The Parable of the Great Banquet
12 He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give (J)a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers[b] or your relatives or rich neighbors, (K)lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, (L)invite (M)the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid (N)at (O)the resurrection of the just.”
15 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, (P)“Blessed is everyone who will (Q)eat bread in the kingdom of God!” 16 But he said to him, (R)“A man once (S)gave a great banquet and invited many. 17 And at the time for the banquet he (T)sent his servant[c] to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ 20 And another said, (U)‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in (V)the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you,[d] (W)none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”
The Cost of Discipleship
25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 (X)“If anyone comes to me and (Y)does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, (Z)yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 (AA)Whoever does not (AB)bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not (AC)first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not (AD)sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 (AE)So therefore, any one of you who (AF)does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
Salt Without Taste Is Worthless
34 (AG)“Salt is good, (AH)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. (AI)He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

14 One Sabbath day Jesus went to eat at the house of a ruler. He was a ruler of the Pharisees. They were watching Jesus.
2 man stood in front of him. He was sick. His body was filled with water.
3 Jesus asked the teachers of God's law and the Pharisees, `Is it right to heal a person on the Sabbath day or not?'
4 They did not answer. So he took the man and healed him. Then he sent him away.
5 Jesus said to them, `If your horse or cow falls into a hole, which one of you will not pull him out right away on the Sabbath day?'
6 They could not answer that.
7 Jesus told a story to the people who were asked to eat at the house. He saw that they chose to sit at the best places.
8 He said to them, `When you are called to a wedding, do not sit in the best place. It may be that a better man than you has been called.
9 Then the man who called you both will come and say to you, "Get up and let this man sit here." Then you will be ashamed. And you will go and sit down in the last place.
10 But when you are asked to go to a wedding, go and sit down in the last place. Then when the man who called you comes, he will say to you, "Friend, come to a better place." Then all the people who sit at the table will see how he respects you.
11 `Everyone who puts himself up in a high place will be brought down to a low place. And everyone who puts himself down in a low place will be brought up to a high place.'
12 Then Jesus said to the man who had asked him to come, `When you make a dinner or a feast, do not ask your friends, or your brothers, or the people in your family, or your rich neighbours. They will repay you by making a dinner for you.
13 But when you make a dinner, ask the people who are poor, hurt, lame, or blind.
14 You will be made happy because they cannot pay you. You will be repaid when all good people are raised from death.'
15 One of those who was sitting at the table heard this. He said, `Happy is the person who will eat in the kingdom of God!'
16 But Jesus said to him, `A man made a big feast and asked many people to come.
17 When the feast was ready, he sent his servant to tell the people who had been asked. He said, "Come. Everything is ready."
18 But the people all began to make excuses. The first one said, `I have bought a farm. I must go and see it. I beg you, excuse me from the feast."
19 Another man said, "I have bought ten oxen. I am going to see them. I beg you, excuse me from the feast."
20 Another one said, "I have married a woman, and so I cannot come."
21 `The servant came and told his master. Then the master was very angry. He said to his servant, "Go out quickly. Go on all the streets in the city. Bring here people who are poor, hurt, blind, or lame."
22 `The servant came back and said, "Sir, I have done what you told me to do. There is still room for more people."
23 Then the master said to the servant, "Go out onto the roads and behind bushes. Find people and make them come in so that my house will be full.
24 I tell you, not one of the men who were called first will eat any of my feast.'
26 Many people were going with Jesus. He turned to them and said, `If any man comes to me, he must hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sister. Yes, he must hate himself too. If he does not, he cannot be my disciple.
27 If anyone does not carry his cross [is not ready to die] and come with me, he cannot be my disciple.
28 `When any of you wants to build a high house, you sit down first and see how much it will cost. You want to see if you have enough money to finish it.
29 If you do not have enough money, you will not be able to finish it after you have made the foundation. Then all the people who see it will laugh at you.
30 They will say, "This man started to build a house and could not finish it."
31 `When a king goes to fight against another king, he sits down first and thinks about the matter. He will ask himself, "Can I fight him with ten thousand soldiers? He has twenty thousand soldiers."
32 If he cannot fight him, he will send some men to meet the other king while he is still far away. He will try to make peace with him.
33 `In the same way, any one of you who does not give up all he has cannot be my disciple.'
34 `Salt is good. But if the salt has lost its taste, how can it be made salty again?
35 It is not good for the land or the dirt pile. People throw it away. `Everyone who has ears to hear, listen!"

4 And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go;
5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?
6 And they could not answer him again to these things.
7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.
8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.
25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Jesus at a Pharisee’s House(A)
14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee,(B) he was being carefully watched.(C) 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,(D) “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(E) 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.
5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[a] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”(F) 6 And they had nothing to say.
7 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table,(G) he told them this parable: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(H)
12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,(I) 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”(J)
The Parable of the Great Banquet(K)
15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast(L) in the kingdom of God.”(M)
16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’
19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’
20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’
21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’(N)
22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”(O)
The Cost of Being a Disciple
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.(P) 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.(Q)
28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.(R)
34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?(S) 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.(T)

14 Isang araw ng Sabbath, pumasok si Jesus sa bahay ng isa sa mga pinuno ng mga Fariseo upang kumain. Minamatyagan siyang mabuti ng mga Fariseo. 2 Bigla na lamang pumunta sa kanyang harapan ang isang lalaking minamanas. 3 Tinanong ni Jesus ang mga dalubhasa sa Kautusan at ang mga Fariseo, “Ipinahihintulot ba na magpagaling kung araw ng Sabbath o hindi?” 4 Ngunit hindi sila umimik, kaya hinawakan niya ang maysakit at ito'y pinagaling at pinauwi. 5 At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Kung sinuman sa inyo ang may anak o toro na mahulog sa balon, hindi ba agad ninyo itong iaahon kahit na araw ng Sabbath?” 6 Hindi nila masagot ang mga ito.

7 Nang mapansin niyang pinipili ng mga inanyayahan ang mga upuang pandangal, sinabi niya sa kanila ang isang talinghaga: 8 “Kapag inanyayahan ka ng sinuman sa isang kasalan, huwag kang maupo sa upuang pandangal. Baka mayroon siyang inanyayahang mas kilala kaysa iyo. 9 At sa paglapit ng nag-anyaya sa inyong dalawa ay sasabihin niya, ‘Ibigay mo sa taong ito ang iyong upuan.’ Mapapahiya ka lamang at uupo sa pinakaabang upuan. 10 Sa halip, kung naanyayahan ka, pumunta ka at umupo sa pinakaabang upuan. Pagdating ng nag-anyaya sa iyo, sasabihin niya sa iyo, ‘Kaibigan, lumipat ka sa mas marangal na upuan.’ Sa gayon ay mabibigyan ka ng dangal sa harap ng mga kasalo mo. 11 Sapagkat ibababa ang sinumang nagtataas ng sarili ngunit ang nagpapakababa ay itataas.” 12 Sinabi rin niya sa nag-anyaya sa kanya, “Kapag naghanda ka ng tanghalian o hapunan, huwag mong anyayahan ang mga kaibigan mo, o ang iyong mga kapatid, o ang iyong mga kamag-anak, o ang mayayaman mong kapitbahay; baka aanyayahan ka rin nila at sa gayo'y masusuklian ang iyong paanyaya. 13 Ngunit kung maghahanda ka ng piging, anyayahan mo ang mga dukha, mga pilay, mga lumpo, at mga bulag. 14 Pagpapalain ka sapagkat hindi nila mababayaran ang iyong ginawa. Mababayaran ka na lamang sa muling pagkabuhay ng mga matuwid.”
Talinghaga ng Malaking Hapunan(A)
15 Narinig ito ng isa sa mga kasalo niya kaya't sinabi nito sa kanya, “Pinagpala ang makakasalo sa piging sa kaharian ng Diyos.” 16 Sinabi sa kanya ni Jesus, “Isang tao ang nagbigay ng isang piging at nag-anyaya ng marami. 17 Nang oras na ng hapunan, isinugo niya ang kanyang lingkod upang sabihin sa mga inanyayahan, ‘Halina kayo! Sapagkat ang lahat ay handa na.’ 18 Ngunit lahat sila ay nagsimulang magdahilan. Sinabi ng una, ‘Nakabili ako ng bukid at kailangan kong puntahan iyon. Humihingi ako ng paumanhin.’ 19 Sinabi naman ng isa, ‘Nakabili ako ng limang pares na baka at aalis ako upang subukin ang mga ito. Humihingi ako ng paumanhin.’ 20 Sinabi ng isa pa, ‘Bagong kasal ako kaya't hindi ako makadadalo.’ 21 Pagbalik ng lingkod, iniulat niya sa kanyang panginoon ang mga iyon. Sa galit ng panginoon ng sambahayan ay sinabi niya sa kanyang lingkod, ‘Pumunta ka agad sa mga lansangan at eskinita ng bayan at dalhin mo rito ang mga dukha, mga pilay, mga bulag at mga lumpo.’ 22 Sinabi ng lingkod pagbalik nito, ‘Panginoon, natupad na ang ipinag-utos ninyo, pero may lugar pa rin.’ 23 Kaya sinabi ng panginoon sa lingkod, ‘Lumabas ka sa mga daan at bakuran. Pilitin mong pumarito ang mga tao upang mapuno ang aking bahay.’ 24 Sinasabi ko sa inyo, hindi makatitikim ng aking piging kahit isa man sa mga inanyayahan.”
Ang Kabayaran ng Pagiging Isang Alagad(B)
25 Sumama sa paglalakbay ni Jesus ang napakaraming tao. Humarap siya sa kanila at sinabi, 26 “Hindi maaaring maging alagad ko ang sinumang lumalapit sa akin na hindi napopoot sa kanyang ama, ina, asawa, mga anak, mga kapatid, o maging sa kanyang sariling buhay. 27 Hindi maaaring maging alagad ko ang sinumang hindi nagpapasan ng kanyang sariling krus at sumusunod sa akin. 28 Sapagkat sino ba sa inyo na nagnanais magtayo ng tore ang hindi muna nauupo at inaalam ang magugugol upang matiyak kung mayroon siyang sapat na halaga hanggang matapos ito? 29 Baka kung nailagay na ang pundasyon at hindi ito makayang tapusin, kukutyain siya ng lahat ng makakakita sa kanya. 30 Sasabihin nila, ‘Nagsimulang magtayo ang taong ito pero hindi naman niya kayang tapusin iyon.’ 31 O sinong hari ang makikipagdigma sa ibang hari ang hindi muna nauupo at sumasangguni sa kanyang mga tagapayo kung kayang manalo ng kanyang sampung libong kawal laban sa kalaban niyang sumusugod na may dalawampung libong kawal? 32 Kung hindi niya kaya, habang malayo pa ang kaaway ay magpapadala na siya ng sugo upang makipagkasundo para sa kapayapaan. 33 Kaya nga't sino man sa inyo na hindi magtatakwil sa lahat ng kanyang pag-aari ay hindi maaaring maging alagad ko.”
Asin na Walang Lasa(C)
34 “Mainam ang asin. Subalit kung mawalan ng lasa ang asin, paano pa ito mapapaalat? 35 Wala na itong silbi kahit sa lupa o sa tambakan ng dumi. Itatapon na lang ito sa labas. Makinig ang may pandinig.”
