⁹ he was chosen by lot,^(A) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.^(B)

¹¹ My sons, do not be negligent now, for the Lord has chosen you to stand before him and serve him,^(A) to minister^(B) before him and to burn incense.”

⁷ “Aaron must burn fragrant incense^(A) on the altar every morning when he tends the lamps. ⁸ He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight so incense will burn regularly before the Lord for the generations to come.^(B)

²⁸ I chose^(A) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,^(B) and to wear an ephod^(C) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings^(D) presented by the Israelites.

⁴⁰ as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense^(A) before the Lord,^(B) or he would become like Korah and his followers.^(C)

⁶ When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly^(A) into the outer room to carry on their ministry.

¹⁶ But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride^(A) led to his downfall.^(B) He was unfaithful^(C) to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense^(D) on the altar of incense.

⁴⁹ But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar^(A) of burnt offering and on the altar of incense^(B) in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.
