Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees

12 In the meantime, (A)when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, (B)“Beware of (C)the leaven of the Pharisees, (D)which is hypocrisy. (E)Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in (F)private rooms shall be proclaimed on (G)the housetops.

Have No Fear

“I tell you, my friends, (H)do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him (I)who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[a] Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[b] And (J)not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, (K)even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; (L)you are of more value than many sparrows.

Acknowledge Christ Before Men

“And I tell you, (M)everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge (N)before the angels of God, but (O)the one who denies me before men (P)will be denied (Q)before the angels of God. 10 And (R)everyone who speaks a word (S)against the Son of Man (T)will be forgiven, but the one who (U)blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 (V)And when they (W)bring you before the synagogues and (X)the rulers and (Y)the authorities, (Z)do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 (AA)for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 (AB)Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, (AC)“Man, (AD)who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” 15 And he said to them, (AE)“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, (AF)“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, (AG)‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my (AH)barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up (AI)for many years; relax, (AJ)eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, (AK)‘Fool! (AL)This night (AM)your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, (AN)whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one (AO)who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Do Not Be Anxious

22 And he said to his disciples, (AP)“Therefore I tell you, (AQ)do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 (AR)Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. (AS)Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his (AT)span of life?[c] 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,[d] yet I tell you, (AU)even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, (AV)O you of little faith! 29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor (AW)be worried. 30 For (AX)all the nations of the world seek after these things, and (AY)your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, (AZ)seek (BA)his[e] kingdom, (BB)and these things will be added to you.

32 (BC)“Fear not, little (BD)flock, for (BE)it is your Father's good pleasure to give you (BF)the kingdom. 33 (BG)Sell your possessions, and (BH)give to the needy. (BI)Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with (BJ)a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. 34 (BK)For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

You Must Be Ready

35 (BL)“Stay dressed for action[f] and (BM)keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are (BN)waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and (BO)knocks. 37 (BP)Blessed are those servants[g] whom the master finds (BQ)awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, (BR)he will dress himself for service and (BS)have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 (BT)But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour (BU)the thief was coming, he[h] would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be (BV)ready, for (BW)the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

41 Peter said, “Lord, (BX)are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is (BY)the faithful and (BZ)wise (CA)manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 (CB)Blessed is that servant[i] whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, (CC)he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master (CD)is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and (CE)get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come (CF)on a day when he does not expect him and (CG)at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. 47 (CH)And that servant who (CI)knew his master's will but (CJ)did not get ready (CK)or act according to his will, will receive a (CL)severe beating. 48 (CM)But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, (CN)will receive a light beating. (CO)Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.

Not Peace, but Division

49 (CP)“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 (CQ)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how (CR)great is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 (CS)Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? (CT)No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, (CU)father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Interpreting the Time

54 He also said to the crowds, (CV)“When you see (CW)a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.’ And so it happens. 55 And (CX)when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be (CY)scorching heat,’ and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! (CZ)You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

Settle with Your Accuser

57 “And why (DA)do you not judge (DB)for yourselves what is right? 58 (DC)As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. 59 I tell you, (DD)you will never get out until you have paid the very last (DE)penny.”[j]

Repent or Perish

13 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood (DF)Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, (DG)“Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but unless you (DH)repent, you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in (DI)Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you (DJ)repent, you will all likewise perish.”

The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree

And he told this parable: “A man had (DK)a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. (DL)Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’ And he answered him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

A Woman with a Disabling Spirit

10 Now (DM)he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman who had had (DN)a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your disability.” 13 And he (DO)laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she (DP)glorified God. 14 But (DQ)the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus (DR)had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, (DS)“There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! (DT)Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it? 16 And ought not this woman, (DU)a daughter of Abraham whom (DV)Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17 As he said these things, (DW)all his adversaries were put to shame, and (DX)all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

The Mustard Seed and the Leaven

18 (DY)He said therefore, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like (DZ)a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches.”

20 And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 (EA)It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in (EB)three measures of flour, until it was (EC)all leavened.”

The Narrow Door

22 (ED)He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and (EE)journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, “Lord, (EF)will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24 (EG)“Strive (EH)to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 (EI)When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, (EJ)‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, (EK)‘I do not know where you come from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, (EL)‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, (EM)I do not know where you come from. (EN)Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ 28 (EO)In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see (EP)Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but (EQ)you yourselves cast out. 29 And (ER)people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and (ES)recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, (ET)some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

Lament over Jerusalem

31 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from (EU)here, for (EV)Herod wants to kill you.” 32 And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day (EW)I finish my course. 33 Nevertheless, (EX)I (EY)must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that (EZ)a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ 34 (FA)O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that (FB)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! (FC)How often would I have (FD)gathered (FE)your children together (FF)as a hen gathers her brood (FG)under her wings, and (FH)you were not willing! 35 Behold, (FI)your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, (FJ)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Healing of a Man on the Sabbath

14 One Sabbath, (FK)when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were (FL)watching him carefully. And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. And Jesus responded to (FM)the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (FN)“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?” But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. And he said to them, (FO)“Which of you, having a son[k] or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” (FP)And they could not reply to these things.

The Parable of the Wedding Feast

Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed (FQ)how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, (FR)so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For (FS)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

The Parable of the Great Banquet

12 He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give (FT)a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers[l] or your relatives or rich neighbors, (FU)lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, (FV)invite (FW)the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid (FX)at (FY)the resurrection of the just.”

15 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, (FZ)“Blessed is everyone who will (GA)eat bread in the kingdom of God!” 16 But he said to him, (GB)“A man once (GC)gave a great banquet and invited many. 17 And at the time for the banquet he (GD)sent his servant[m] to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ 20 And another said, (GE)‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in (GF)the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I tell you,[n] (GG)none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’”

The Cost of Discipleship

25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 (GH)“If anyone comes to me and (GI)does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, (GJ)yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 (GK)Whoever does not (GL)bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not (GM)first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not (GN)sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 (GO)So therefore, any one of you who (GP)does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

Salt Without Taste Is Worthless

34 (GQ)“Salt is good, (GR)but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. (GS)He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

15 Now (GT)the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes (GU)grumbled, saying, (GV)“This man receives sinners and (GW)eats with them.”

So he told them this parable: (GX)“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, (GY)if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine (GZ)in the open country, and (HA)go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, (HB)he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for (HC)I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who (HD)repents than over ninety-nine (HE)righteous persons who need no repentance.

The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or what woman, having ten silver coins,[o] if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy before (HF)the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me (HG)the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided (HH)his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in (HI)reckless living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to[p] one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he (HJ)was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

17 “But (HK)when he (HL)came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, (HM)I have sinned against (HN)heaven and before you. 19 (HO)I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ 20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and (HP)ran and (HQ)embraced him and (HR)kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. (HS)I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’[q] 22 But the father said to his servants,[r] ‘Bring quickly (HT)the best robe, and put it on him, and put (HU)a ring on his hand, and (HV)shoes on his feet. 23 And bring (HW)the fattened calf and kill it, and (HX)let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son (HY)was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

25 “Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ 28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29 but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might (HZ)celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came, (IA)who has devoured (IB)your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ 31 And he said to him, ‘Son, (IC)you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 It was fitting (ID)to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother (IE)was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

The Parable of the Dishonest Manager

16 He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had (IF)a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your (IG)management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures[s] of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred measures[t] of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’ The master commended the dishonest manager for his (IH)shrewdness. For (II)the sons of this world[u] are (IJ)more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than (IK)the sons of light. And I tell you, (IL)make friends for yourselves by means of (IM)unrighteous wealth,[v] so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.

10 (IN)“One who is (IO)faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. 11 If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? 12 And if you have not been faithful in (IP)that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own? 13 (IQ)No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

The Law and the Kingdom of God

14 (IR)The Pharisees, who were (IS)lovers of money, heard all these things, and they (IT)ridiculed him. 15 And he said to them, “You are those who (IU)justify yourselves before men, but (IV)God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men (IW)is an abomination in the sight of God.

16 (IX)“The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then (IY)the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and (IZ)everyone forces his way into it.[w] 17 But (JA)it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.

Divorce and Remarriage

18 (JB)“Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in (JC)purple and fine linen and (JD)who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate (JE)was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with (JF)what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by (JG)the angels (JH)to Abraham's side.[x] The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in (JI)Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and (JJ)saw Abraham far off and Lazarus (JK)at his side. 24 And he called out, (JL)‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and (JM)cool my tongue, for (JN)I am in anguish in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that (JO)you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have (JP)Moses and the Prophets; (JQ)let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, (JR)father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear (JS)Moses and the Prophets, (JT)neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Temptations to Sin

17 And he said to his disciples, (JU)“Temptations to sin[y] are (JV)sure to come, but (JW)woe to the one through whom they come! (JX)It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.[z] Pay attention to yourselves! (JY)If your brother sins, (JZ)rebuke him, and if he repents, (KA)forgive him, and if he sins against you (KB)seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”

Increase Our Faith

(KC)The apostles said to the Lord, (KD)“Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, (KE)“If you had faith like (KF)a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this (KG)mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Unworthy Servants

“Will any one of you who has a servant[aa] plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and (KH)dress properly,[ab] and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? 10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are (KI)unworthy servants;[ac] we have only done what was our duty.’”

Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers

11 (KJ)On the way to Jerusalem (KK)he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers,[ad] (KL)who stood at a distance 13 and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” 14 When he saw them he said to them, “Go and (KM)show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed. 15 Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, (KN)praising God with a loud voice; 16 and (KO)he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was (KP)a Samaritan. 17 Then Jesus answered, “Were not (KQ)ten cleansed? Where are the nine? 18 Was no one found to return and (KR)give praise to God except this (KS)foreigner?” 19 And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; (KT)your faith has (KU)made you well.”[ae]

The Coming of the Kingdom

20 Being asked by the Pharisees (KV)when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God (KW)is not coming in ways that can be observed, 21 nor (KX)will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”[af]

22 And he said to the disciples, (KY)“The days are coming when you will desire (KZ)to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 (LA)And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them. 24 (LB)For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be (LC)in his day.[ag] 25 But first (LD)he must suffer many things and (LE)be rejected by this generation. 26 (LF)Just as it was in the days of (LG)Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 (LH)They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of (LI)Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, 29 (LJ)but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— 30 so will it be (LK)on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day, (LL)let the one who is on (LM)the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. 32 (LN)Remember Lot's wife. 33 (LO)Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will (LP)keep it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left. 35 (LQ)There will be two women (LR)grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”[ah] 37 And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, (LS)“Where the corpse[ai] is, there the vultures[aj] will gather.”

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought (LT)always to pray and not (LU)lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who (LV)neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, (LW)‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And (LX)will not God give justice to (LY)his elect, (LZ)who cry to him day and night? (MA)(MB)Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them (MC)speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, (MD)will he find faith on earth?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

He also told this parable to some (ME)who trusted (MF)in themselves that they were righteous, (MG)and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men (MH)went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, (MI)standing by himself, prayed[ak] (MJ)thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 (MK)I fast twice a week; (ML)I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, (MM)standing far off, (MN)would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but (MO)beat his breast, saying, ‘God, (MP)be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For (MQ)everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Let the Children Come to Me

15 (MR)Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they (MS)rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to him, saying, (MT)“Let the children come to me, and (MU)do not hinder them, (MV)for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 17 (MW)Truly, I say to you, whoever does not (MX)receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

The Rich Ruler

18 (MY)And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to (MZ)inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: (NA)‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, (NB)“All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. (NC)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have (ND)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Warnings and Encouragements(A)

12 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be[a] on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.(B) There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(C) What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

“I tell you, my friends,(D) do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.(E) Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(F) Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(G)

“I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.(H) But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned(I) before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man(J) will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.(K)

11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,(L) 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.”(M)

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”(N)

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool!(O) This very night your life will be demanded from you.(P) Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’(Q)

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”(R)

Do Not Worry(S)

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.(T) And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[b]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor(U) was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith!(V) 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father(W) knows that you need them.(X) 31 But seek his kingdom,(Y) and these things will be given to you as well.(Z)

32 “Do not be afraid,(AA) little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.(AB) 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.(AC) Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven(AD) that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.(AE) 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.(AF)

Watchfulness(AG)(AH)

35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.(AI) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.(AJ) 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief(AK) was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready,(AL) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?”

42 The Lord(AM) answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of.(AN) He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.(AO) 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows.(AP) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Not Peace but Division(AQ)

49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism(AR) to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!(AS) 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”(AT)

Interpreting the Times

54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does.(AU) 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?(AV)

57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.(AW) 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”(AX)

Repent or Perish

13 Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate(AY) had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?(AZ) I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam(BA) fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent,(BB) you too will all perish.”

Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.(BC) So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down!(BD) Why should it use up the soil?’

“‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.’”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,(BE) 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.(BF) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her,(BG) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,(BH) the synagogue leader(BI) said to the people, “There are six days for work.(BJ) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

15 The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?(BK) 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,(BL) whom Satan(BM) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,(BN) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(BO)(BP)

18 Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God(BQ) like?(BR) What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree,(BS) and the birds perched in its branches.”(BT)

20 Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[c] of flour until it worked all through the dough.”(BU)

The Narrow Door

22 Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.(BV) 23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”

He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door,(BW) because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’

“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’(BX)

26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’(BY)

28 “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth,(BZ) when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west(CA) and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”(CB)

Jesus’ Sorrow for Jerusalem(CC)(CD)

31 At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod(CE) wants to kill you.”

32 He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’(CF) 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet(CG) can die outside Jerusalem!

34 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(CH) and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(CI) I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[d](CJ)

Jesus at a Pharisee’s House(CK)

14 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee,(CL) he was being carefully watched.(CM) There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body. Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,(CN) “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(CO) But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child[e] or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?”(CP) And they had nothing to say.

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table,(CQ) he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(CR)

12 Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,(CS) 14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”(CT)

The Parable of the Great Banquet(CU)

15 When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus, “Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast(CV) in the kingdom of God.”(CW)

16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’(CX)

22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”(CY)

The Cost of Being a Disciple

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.(CZ) 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.(DA)

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

31 “Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.(DB)

34 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?(DC) 35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.(DD)

“Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(DE)

The Parable of the Lost Sheep(DF)

15 Now the tax collectors(DG) and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”(DH)

Then Jesus told them this parable:(DI) “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?(DJ) And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’(DK) I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.(DL)

The Parable of the Lost Coin

“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[f] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’(DM) 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”(DN)

The Parable of the Lost Son

11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons.(DO) 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’(DP) So he divided his property(DQ) between them.

13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth(DR) in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.(DS) 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned(DT) against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.(DU)

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.(DV) I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe(DW) and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger(DX) and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again;(DY) he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.(DZ)

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

28 “The older brother became angry(EA) and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property(EB) with prostitutes(EC) comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”(ED)

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

16 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.(EE) So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’

“The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’

“So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

“‘Nine hundred gallons[g] of olive oil,’ he replied.

“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’

“Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’

“‘A thousand bushels[h] of wheat,’ he replied.

“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’

“The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world(EF) are more shrewd(EG) in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.(EH) I tell you, use worldly wealth(EI) to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.(EJ)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,(EK) and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,(EL) who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(EM)

14 The Pharisees, who loved money,(EN) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.(EO) 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves(EP) in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.(EQ) What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

Additional Teachings

16 “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.(ER) Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached,(ES) and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.(ET)

18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(EU)

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.(EV) 20 At his gate was laid a beggar(EW) named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.(EX) Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham,(EY) have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’(EZ)

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,(FA) but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.(FB) 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,(FC) so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses(FD) and the Prophets;(FE) let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’(FF) he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Sin, Faith, Duty

17 Jesus said to his disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble(FG) are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.(FH) It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones(FI) to stumble.(FJ) So watch yourselves.

“If your brother or sister[i] sins against you, rebuke them;(FK) and if they repent, forgive them.(FL) Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.”(FM)

The apostles(FN) said to the Lord,(FO) “Increase our faith!”

He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed,(FP) you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.(FQ)

“Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me(FR) while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do? 10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”(FS)

Jesus Heals Ten Men With Leprosy

11 Now on his way to Jerusalem,(FT) Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee.(FU) 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[j](FV) met him. They stood at a distance(FW) 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master,(FX) have pity on us!”

14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”(FY) And as they went, they were cleansed.

15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God(FZ) in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.(GA)

17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”(GB)

The Coming of the Kingdom of God(GC)

20 Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,(GD) Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’(GE) because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”[k]

22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,(GF) but you will not see it.(GG) 23 People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them.(GH) 24 For the Son of Man in his day[l] will be like the lightning,(GI) which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things(GJ) and be rejected(GK) by this generation.(GL)

26 “Just as it was in the days of Noah,(GM) so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 “It was the same in the days of Lot.(GN) People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.(GO) 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.(GP) 32 Remember Lot’s wife!(GQ) 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.(GR) 34 I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”(GS) [36] [m]

37 “Where, Lord?” they asked.

He replied, “Where there is a dead body, there the vultures will gather.”(GT)

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.(GU) He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice(GV) against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”(GW)

And the Lord(GX) said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out(GY) to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man(GZ) comes,(HA) will he find faith on the earth?”

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

To some who were confident of their own righteousness(HB) and looked down on everyone else,(HC) Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray,(HD) one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself(HE) and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast(HF) twice a week and give a tenth(HG) of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast(HH) and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’(HI)

14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”(HJ)

The Little Children and Jesus(HK)

15 People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child(HL) will never enter it.”

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(HM)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(HN)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[n](HO)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
