37 For (A)nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant[a] of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And (B)the angel departed from her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into (C)the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth (D)was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, (E)“Blessed are you among women, and (F)blessed is (G)the fruit of your womb! 43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of (H)my Lord should come to me? 44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And (I)blessed is she who believed that there would be[b] a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Mary's Song of Praise: The Magnificat

46 And Mary said,

(J)“My (K)soul (L)magnifies the Lord,
47     (M)and my (N)spirit rejoices in (O)God my Savior,
48 for (P)he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
    For behold, from now on all generations (Q)will call me blessed;
49 for (R)he who is mighty (S)has done great things for me,
    and (T)holy is his name.
50 And (U)his mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
51 (V)He has shown strength with his arm;
    (W)he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 (X)he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
    (Y)and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled (Z)the hungry with good things,
and the rich (AA)he has sent away empty.
54 He has (AB)helped (AC)his servant Israel,
    (AD)in remembrance of his mercy,
55 (AE)as he spoke to our fathers,
(AF)to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord (AG)had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. 59 And (AH)on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, 60 but his mother answered, “No; (AI)he shall be called John.” 61 And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” 62 And (AJ)they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. 63 And he asked for (AK)a writing tablet and wrote, (AL)“His name is John.” And they all wondered. 64 (AM)And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue (AN)loosed, and he spoke, (AO)blessing God. 65 And (AP)fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all (AQ)the hill country of Judea, 66 and all who heard them (AR)laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For (AS)the hand of the Lord was with him.

Zechariah's Prophecy

67 And his father Zechariah (AT)was filled with the Holy Spirit and (AU)prophesied, saying,

68 (AV)“Blessed be the Lord (AW)God of Israel,
for he has (AX)visited and (AY)redeemed his people
69 and (AZ)has raised up (BA)a horn of salvation for us
(BB)in the house of his servant David,
70 (BC)as (BD)he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
71 (BE)that we should be saved from our enemies
    and from the hand of all who hate us;
72 (BF)to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and (BG)to remember his holy (BH)covenant,
73 (BI)the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us
74     that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
might serve him (BJ)without fear,
75     (BK)in holiness and righteousness before him (BL)all our days.
76 And you, child, will be called (BM)the prophet of (BN)the Most High;
for (BO)you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people
(BP)in the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the (BQ)tender mercy of our God,
    whereby (BR)the sunrise shall (BS)visit us[c] (BT)from on high
79 to (BU)give light to (BV)those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into (BW)the way of (BX)peace.”

80 (BY)And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was (BZ)in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

In those days (CA)a decree went out from (CB)Caesar Augustus that all the world should be (CC)registered. This was the first (CD)registration when[d] Quirinius (CE)was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up (CF)from Galilee, from the town of (CG)Nazareth, to Judea, to (CH)the city of David, which is called (CI)Bethlehem, (CJ)because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,[e] who was with child. And (CK)while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and (CL)wrapped him in swaddling cloths and (CM)laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in (CN)the inn.[f]

The Shepherds and the Angels

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord (CO)appeared to them, and (CP)the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all (CQ)the people. 11 For (CR)unto you is born this day in (CS)the city of David (CT)a Savior, who is (CU)Christ (CV)the Lord. 12 And (CW)this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby (CX)wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel (CY)a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14 (CZ)“Glory to God (DA)in the highest,
(DB)and on earth (DC)peace (DD)among those with whom he is pleased!”[g]

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby (DE)lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But (DF)Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, (DG)glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

21 And (DH)at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, (DI)he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

22 And (DJ)when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem (DK)to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in (DL)the Law of the Lord, (DM)“Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in (DN)the Law of the Lord, (DO)“a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was (DP)righteous and (DQ)devout, (DR)waiting for (DS)the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not (DT)see death before he had seen (DU)the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when (DV)the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and (DW)blessed God and said,

29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant[h] depart (DX)in peace,
    (DY)according to your word;
30 for (DZ)my eyes have seen your (EA)salvation
31     (EB)that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 (EC)a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and (ED)for glory to (EE)your people Israel.”

33 And (EF)his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed (EG)for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign (EH)that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

36 And there was (EI)a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.[i] She did not depart from the temple, (EJ)worshiping with (EK)fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were (EL)waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

The Return to Nazareth

39 And when they had performed everything according to (EM)the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of (EN)Nazareth. 40 (EO)And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.

The Boy Jesus in the Temple

41 Now (EP)his parents went (EQ)to Jerusalem every year at (ER)the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, (ES)they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feast (ET)was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. (EU)His parents did not know it, 44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple, (EV)sitting among (EW)the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when his parents[j] saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, (EX)your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that (EY)I must be in (EZ)my Father's house?”[k] 50 And (FA)they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And (FB)his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

52 And Jesus (FC)increased in wisdom and in stature[l] and in (FD)favor with God and man.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

In the fifteenth year of the reign of (FE)Tiberius Caesar, (FF)Pontius Pilate (FG)being governor of Judea, and (FH)Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during (FI)the high priesthood of Annas and (FJ)Caiaphas, (FK)the word of God came to (FL)John the son of Zechariah in (FM)the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming (FN)a baptism of repentance (FO)for the forgiveness of sins. As it is written in (FP)the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

(FQ)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(FR)‘Prepare the way of the Lord,[m]
    make his paths straight.
(FS)Every valley shall be filled,
(FT)and every mountain and hill shall be made low,
(FU)and the crooked shall become straight,
and the rough places shall become level ways,
(FV)and all flesh shall see (FW)the salvation of God.’”

He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, (FX)“You brood of (FY)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (FZ)the wrath to come? Bear fruits (GA)in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, (GB)‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from (GC)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (GD)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”

10 And the crowds asked him, (GE)“What then shall we do?” 11 And he answered them, (GF)“Whoever has two tunics[n] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” 12 (GG)Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, (GH)what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, (GI)“Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, (GJ)what shall we do?” And he said to them, (GK)“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your (GL)wages.”

37 For no word from God will ever fail.”(A)

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(B) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(C) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(D) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(E) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary’s Song(F)

46 And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord(G)
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,(H)
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.(I)
From now on all generations will call me blessed,(J)

but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
    remembering to be merciful(R)
55 to Abraham and his descendants(S) forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”

56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(T) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(U)

61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

62 Then they made signs(V) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(W) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(X) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(Y) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(Z)

Zechariah’s Song

67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit(AA) and prophesied:(AB)

68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(AC)
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.(AD)
69 He has raised up a horn[a](AE) of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David(AF)
70 (as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),(AG)
71 salvation from our enemies
and from the hand of all who hate us—
72 to show mercy to our ancestors(AH)
and to remember his holy covenant,(AI)
73     the oath he swore to our father Abraham:(AJ)
74 to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
and to enable us to serve him(AK) without fear(AL)
75     in holiness and righteousness(AM) before him all our days.

76 And you, my child, will be called a prophet(AN) of the Most High;(AO)
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,(AP)
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,(AQ)

and in the shadow of death,(AS)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”(AT)

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit[b];(AU) and he lived in the wilderness until he appeared publicly to Israel.

The Birth of Jesus

In those days Caesar Augustus(AV) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.(AW) (This was the first census that took place while[c] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)(AX) And everyone went to their own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(AY) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(AZ) and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel(BA) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(BB) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(BC) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(BD) the Lord.(BE) 12 This will be a sign(BF) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace(BG) to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(BH) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(BI) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(BJ) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,(BK) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.(BL)

Jesus Presented in the Temple

22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(BM) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[d]),(BN) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[e](BO)

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(BP) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(BQ) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(BR) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(BS)
you may now dismiss[f] your servant in peace.(BT)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(BU)
31     which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(BV)

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(BW) “This child is destined to cause the falling(BX) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

36 There was also a prophet,(BY) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[g](BZ) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(CA) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(CB)

39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(CC) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(CD)

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(CE) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(CF) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(CG) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(CH) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[h](CI) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(CJ)

51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(CK) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(CL) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(CM)

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(CN)(CO)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(CP) was governor of Judea, Herod(CQ) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(CR) the word of God came to John(CS) son of Zechariah(CT) in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(CU) As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[i](CV)

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(CW) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(CX) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(CY) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(CZ)

10 “What should we do then?”(DA) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(DB)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(DC) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(DD) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(DE)—be content with your pay.”
