Jesus sänder ut de tolv
9 Jesus kallade till sig de tolv och gav dem makt över alla onda andar och kraft att bota sjukdomar. 2 Och han sände ut dem att predika Guds rike och bota sjuka. 3 Han sade till dem: "Ta ingenting med er på vägen, varken stav eller lädersäck, varken bröd eller pengar, inte heller två livklädnader. 4 När ni kommer in i ett hus, så stanna där tills ni drar vidare. 5 Men om man inte tar emot er, lämna då den staden och skaka dammet av era fötter. Det skall vittna mot dem." 6 De gick ut och vandrade från by till by och predikade överallt evangeliet och botade sjuka.
7 När landsfursten[a] Herodes fick höra om allt som hände, visste han inte vad han skulle tro. Några påstod nämligen att Johannes hade uppstått från de döda, 8 andra att Elia hade trätt fram och andra att någon av de gamla profeterna hade uppstått. 9 Herodes sade: "Johannes har jag halshuggit. Vem är han som jag hör sådant om?" Och Herodes ville gärna träffa Jesus.
Jesus mättar fem tusen män
10 Apostlarna kom tillbaka och berättade för Jesus allt de hade gjort. Då tog han dem med sig och drog sig undan mot en stad som heter Betsaida. 11 Men folket fick veta det och följde efter honom. Han tog då emot dem och talade till dem om Guds rike, och han botade dem som behövde hjälp.
12 Vid dagens slut kom de tolv fram och sade till honom: "Låt folket skiljas åt, så att de kan gå till byarna och gårdarna häromkring och skaffa mat och husrum. Vi är ju här på en öde plats." 13 Han sade till dem: "Ge ni dem att äta." De svarade: "Vi har bara fem bröd och två fiskar, om vi nu inte skall gå och köpa mat åt allt det här folket." 14 Det var ungefär fem tusen män. Då sade han till sina lärjungar: "Låt folket slå sig ner i matlag, omkring femtio i varje." 15 De gjorde så och lät alla slå sig ner. 16 Sedan tog han de fem bröden och de två fiskarna, såg upp mot himlen, välsignade dem och bröt bröden och gav åt lärjungarna för att de skulle sätta fram åt folket. 17 Alla åt och blev mätta. Och de stycken som blev över efter dem plockades upp, tolv korgar.
Petrus bekännelse
18 En gång när Jesus hade dragit sig undan för att be och lärjungarna var hos honom, frågade han dem: "Vem säger folket att jag är?" 19 De svarade: "Johannes Döparen, andra säger Elia och andra att någon av de gamla profeterna har uppstått." 20 Han sade till dem: "Och ni, vem säger ni att jag är?" Petrus svarade: "Du är Guds Messias." 21 Då förbjöd han dem strängt att tala om detta för någon 22 och sade: "Människosonen måste lida mycket och förkastas av de äldste och översteprästerna och de skriftlärda. Han måste dödas och på tredje dagen uppväckas."
I Jesu efterföljd
23 Sedan sade han till alla: "Om någon vill följa mig, skall han förneka sig själv och varje dag ta sitt kors och följa mig. 24 Ty den som vill bevara sitt liv skall mista det, men den som mister sitt liv för min skull, han skall vinna det. 25 Vad hjälper det en människa, om hon vinner hela världen men förlorar sitt liv eller själv går förlorad? 26 Den som skäms för mig och mina ord, honom skall Människosonen skämmas för, när han kommer i sin och sin Faders och de heliga änglarnas härlighet.
Jesu härlighet uppenbaras
27 Jag säger er sanningen: Bland dem som står här finns några som inte skall smaka döden, förrän de får se Guds rike." 28 Omkring åtta dagar efter det att Jesus hade sagt detta, tog han med sig Petrus, Johannes och Jakob och gick upp på berget för att be. 29 Medan han bad förvandlades hans ansikte och hans kläder blev skinande vita. 30 Och se, två män samtalade med honom. Det var Mose och Elia 31 och de visade sig i härlighet och talade om hans bortgång, som han skulle fullborda i Jerusalem. 32 Petrus och de som var med honom sov tungt, men när de vaknade såg de Jesu härlighet och de båda männen som stod där tillsammans med honom. 33 När dessa skulle skiljas från honom, sade Petrus till Jesus: "Mästare, det är gott för oss att vara här. Låt oss göra tre hyddor, en åt dig, en åt Mose och en åt Elia." Han visste inte vad han sade. 34 Medan han talade, kom ett moln och sänkte sig ner över dem, och lärjungarna blev förskräckta, när dessa trädde in i molnet. 35 Och ur molnet kom en röst: "Denne är min Son, den Utvalde, lyssna till honom!" 36 Och när rösten ljöd, visade det sig att Jesus var ensam. Lärjungarna teg och berättade inte vid den tiden för någon vad de hade sett.
Jesus botar en besatt pojke
37 När de dagen därefter kom ner från berget, möttes han av en stor skara människor. 38 Då ropade en man ur folkhopen: "Mästare, jag ber dig, hjälp min son! Han är mitt enda barn. 39 En ande sliter i pojken, och så skriker han plötsligt till. Den sliter i honom och fradgan står kring munnen på honom, och den vill knappast lämna honom och sluta misshandla honom. 40 Jag bad dina lärjungar att de skulle driva ut anden, men de kunde inte." 41 Jesus svarade: "Du fördärvade släkte som inte vill tro! Hur länge skall jag vara hos er och stå ut med er? För hit din son!" 42 Medan pojken ännu var på väg, kastade anden honom till marken och slet och ryckte i honom. Men Jesus talade strängt till den orene anden och botade pojken och gav honom tillbaka till hans far. 43 Och alla häpnade över Guds väldiga makt.
Människosonen skall utlämnas
Medan alla förundrade sig över allt som han gjorde, sade han till sina lärjungar: 44 "Lyssna noga till det jag nu säger: Människosonen kommer att utlämnas i människors händer." 45 Men de förstod inte vad han sade. Det var fördolt för dem, och de kunde inte fatta det. Och de vågade inte fråga honom om det han hade sagt.
Vem är störst?
46 Bland lärjungarna kom frågan upp, vem som kunde vara störst bland dem. 47 Jesus visste vad de tänkte i sina hjärtan och tog ett barn och ställde det bredvid sig 48 och sade till dem: "Den som tar emot det här barnet i mitt namn, han tar emot mig. Och den som tar emot mig tar emot honom som har sänt mig. Ty den som är minst bland er alla, han är den störste."
49 Johannes sade: "Mästare, vi såg en man som drev ut onda andar i ditt namn, och vi försökte hindra honom eftersom han inte följde med oss." 50 Jesus sade till Johannes: "Hindra honom inte. Den som inte är emot er, han är för er."
Jesus på väg upp till Jerusalem
51 När tiden för hans bortgång[b] var inne, vände han sitt ansikte mot Jerusalem fast besluten att gå dit upp. 52 Han sände budbärare framför sig, och de gav sig i väg och gick in i en samaritisk by för att förbereda hans ankomst. 53 Men folket tog inte emot honom, eftersom han var på väg till Jerusalem. 54 När hans lärjungar Jakob och Johannes såg det, sade de: "Herre, vill du att vi skall kalla ner eld från himlen som förtär dem?" 55 Men Jesus vände sig om och tillrättavisade dem. 56 Och de gick vidare till en annan by.
57 Medan de vandrade vägen fram, sade någon till honom: "Jag vill följa dig vart du än går." 58 Jesus svarade honom: "Rävarna har lyor och himlens fåglar har bon, men Människosonen har inget att vila huvudet mot." 59 Till en annan sade han: "Följ mig!" Mannen svarade: "Herre, låt mig först gå och begrava min far." 60 Jesus sade till honom: "Låt de döda begrava sina döda, men gå du och predika Guds rike!" 61 En annan sade: "Jag vill följa dig, Herre, men låt mig först ta farväl av min familj." 62 Jesus svarade: "Ingen som ser sig om sedan han har satt handen till plogen passar för Guds rike."

Jesus sänder ut de tolv
9 En dag samlade Jesus sina tolv apostlar och gav dem makt och kraft att driva ut alla onda andar och att bota sjukdomar.
2 Sedan sände han ut dem för att berätta överallt att Guds rike var nära och för att bota sjuka.
3 Ta inte med er så mycket som en vandringsstav eller en tiggarpåse, befallde han dem, och inte heller mat eller pengar, inte ens en extra skjorta.
4 Och gästa bara ett hem på varje plats innan ni vandrar vidare.
5 Om människorna i en stad inte lyssnar till er när ni kommer dit, så vänd om och lämna dem och när ni går därifrån så borsta av dammet från era fötter som ett tecken på att Gud kommer att straffa den staden.
6 Så började de sin vandring från plats till plats, och predikade överallt de goda nyheterna och botade de sjuka.
Herodes låter avrätta Johannes döparen
7 När rapporterna om de under som Jesus gjorde nådde kung Herodes, kände han oro och ångest för en del sa: Det är Johannes döparen som återvänt till livet,
8 och andra: Det är Elia eller någon annan av de gamla profeterna som uppstått från de döda.
9 Jag halshögg Johannes, sa Herodes, men vem är då den här mannen som jag hör så underliga berättelser om? Och han försökte få träffa honom.
Jesus ger mat åt fem tusen
10 Sedan apostlarna återvänt till Jesus och rapporterat om vad de gjort, gick han i hemlighet med dem till staden Betsaida.
11 Men folket fick reda på vart han var på väg och följde efter. Han visade inte bort dem, utan undervisade dem än en gång om Guds rike och botade dem som var sjuka.
12 Sent på eftermiddagen kom alla tolv apostlarna och uppmanade honom att låta människorna ge sig av till byar och gårdar i närheten, så att de kunde få mat och logi över natten. På den här öde platsen finns det inget att äta, sa de.
13 Men Jesus svarade: Ni kan ju själva ge dem att äta!Hur ska det gå till? Allt vi har är fem brödkakor och två fiskar, protesterade de. Menar du att vi ska gå och köpa så att det räcker till alla de här människorna?
14 Det var nämligen cirka fem tusen män där. Be dem bara att slå sig ner i grupper om femtio, svarade Jesus.
15 Och man gjorde så.
16 Jesus tog sedan de fem brödkakorna och de två fiskarna och såg upp mot himlen och tackade Gud. Därefter bröt han bröden och fiskarna i bitar och gav åt sina lärjungar för att de skulle ge åt folket.
17 Man åt sig mätta, men trots det blev det tolv korgar med mat över.
Petrus erkänner Jesus som Messias
18 En dag när Jesus var ensam och bad, och hans lärjungar var i närheten, kom han fram till dem och frågade: Vem säger folket att jag är?
19 Johannes döparen, svarade de, men andra säger Elia eller någon annan av de gamla profeterna som uppstått från de döda.
20 Då frågade han dem: Vem tror ni att jag är? Petrus svarade: Du är Kristus - den som alla väntat på.
Jesus förutsäger för första gången att han ska dö
21 Han gav dem stränga order att inte tala om detta för någon.
22 Människosonen måste lida mycket, sa han, och de judiska ledarna - de äldste, översteprästerna och laglärarna - kommer att ta avstånd från honom och döda honom, men tre dagar senare kommer han att uppstå!
23 Sedan sa han till alla: Den som vill följa mig måste säga nej till sina egna önskningar och begär, och bära sitt kors varje dag och hålla sig tätt intill mig!
24 Den som förlorar sitt liv för min skull ska vinna det, men den som strävar efter att rädda sitt liv ska förlora det.
25 Och vad tjänar man på att vinna hela världen, om man samtidigt förlorar sitt eget jag?
26 När jag, Människosonen, kommer i min härlighet och i Faderns och de heliga änglarnas härlighet, ska jag skämmas för alla som nu skäms för mig och mina ord.
27 Men tro mig: Några av er som står här nu kommer att leva och se Guds rike med egna ögon!
Jesus förvandlas på berget
28 Åtta dagar senare tog han med sig Petrus, Jakob och Johannes och gick upp på ett berg för att be.
29 Och medan han bad började hans ansikte skina, och hans kläder blev bländande vita och strålade av ljus.
30 Plötsligt stod två män bredvid honom och talade med honom. Det var Mose och Elia,
31 och också de strålade av ljus, och de talade om att Jesus enligt Guds plan skulle dö i Jerusalem.
32 Petrus och de båda andra hade blivit så sömniga att de somnat. Men nu vaknade de, och de såg Jesus och de två männen, omstrålade av ljus och glans.
33 När Mose och Elia gjorde sig beredda att gå därifrån, ropade Petrus, som var så förvirrad att han inte ens visste vad han sa: Herre, det här är fantastiskt! Vi ska bygga tre hyddor, en åt dig och en åt Mose och en åt Elia!
34 Men medan han sa detta blev de insvepta i ett ljust moln som sänkte sig ner över dem, och de blev rädda
35 när en röst från molnet sa: Detta är min Son, som jag har utvalt. Lyssna på honom.
36 När rösten hade tystnat stod Jesus ensam kvar. Men lärjungarna teg och berättade inte förrän långt senare för någon om vad de hade sett.
Jesus botar en pojke som är besatt av en ond ande
37 Nästa dag, när de kom ner från berget, mötte de en stor skara människor,
38 och en man i folkhopen ropade till Jesus: Mästare, den här pojken är mitt enda barn.
39 Ofta tar en ond ande tag i honom. Då skriker pojken och vrider sig i kramper tills fradgan står om munnen på honom. Så håller anden på och lämnar honom nästan aldrig i fred.
40 Jag bad dina lärjungar att driva ut den, men de klarade inte av det!
41 O, ni tröga människor som aldrig kan tro! utbrast Jesus. Hur länge ska jag stå ut med er? Ta hit pojken.
42 När pojken var på väg mot honom, knuffade den onde anden omkull honom och slet och ryckte våldsamt i honom. Men Jesus befallde den onde anden att lämna pojken, och botade honom och överlämnade honom till hans far.
43 Alla som var med blev förvånade och förskräckta över den makt och kraft som visade sig i det som hänt.Medan folket fortfarande förvånade sig över vad han gjorde, sa Jesus till lärjungarna:
Jesus förutsäger för andra gången hur han ska dö
44 Lyssna noga på mig, och kom ihåg vad jag säger. Människosonen ska förrådas.
45 Men lärjungarna förstod det inte, och de begrep inte vad han ville säga. De vågade inte heller fråga honom.
Lärjungarna diskuterar vem av dem som är störst
46 Istället började de diskutera om vem som skulle bli den främste av dem i det rike som Jesus talade om.
47 Men Jesus förstod vad som rörde sig i deras tankar och ställde därför ett litet barn bredvid sig
48 och sa till dem: Den som tar emot ett litet barn som det här, tar emot mig! Och den som tar emot mig tar emot Gud som sände mig. Den som själv håller sig för att vara liten är verkligen stor.
Lärjungarna förbjuder en man att använda Jesu namn
49 Då sa Johannes plötsligt: Herre, vi såg en som använde ditt namn till att driva ut onda andar, och eftersom han inte är med oss försökte vi stoppa honom.
50 Men Jesus sa: Det skulle du inte ha gjort. För den som inte är mot oss är för oss.
Att följa Jesus har sitt pris
51 Det var snart dags för Jesus att återvända till sin far i himlen, och därför började han med stor beslutsamhet att vandra mot Jerusalem.
52 En dag skickade han budbärare framför sig för att de skulle skaffa husrum i en samarisk by.
53 Men eftersom Jesus var på väg mot Jerusalem tog man honom för att vara en judisk pilgrim och ville inte ha med honom att göra.
54 När de båda lärjungarna Jakob och Johannes fick reda på vad som hänt, blev de upprörda och sa: Mästare, ska vi befalla att eld kommer ner från himlen och bränner upp dem, så som Elia gjorde?
55 Men Jesus vände sig om och tillrättavisade dem.
56 Sedan gick de vidare till en annan plats.
57 Medan de var på väg sa någon till Jesus: Jag vill följa dig vart du än går.
58 Men Jesus svarade: Kom ihåg att jag inte ens har ett ställe där jag kan vila mitt huvud. Rävarna har sina lyor, och fåglarna har sina bon, men Människosonen är hemlös här på jorden.
59 Till en annan man sa han: Följ mig, och bli min lärjunge! Mannen svarade: Ja, men jag vill vänta tills min far dött.
60 Då svarade Jesus: Låt den som saknar det eviga livet syssla med sådant. Din uppgift är att predika om Guds rike för hela världen.
61 En annan sa: Ja, Herre, jag ska komma, men låt mig först ta farväl av dem därhemma.
62 Men Jesus sa till honom: Den som låter sig lockas bort från det arbete jag planerar för honom, passar inte i Guds rike.

Jesus Sends Out the Apostles
9 Jesus called the twelve apostles together and gave them power and authority over all demons and the ability to heal sicknesses. 2 He sent the apostles out to tell about God’s kingdom and to heal the sick. 3 He said to them, “Take nothing for your trip, neither a walking stick, bag, bread, money, or extra clothes. 4 When you enter a house, stay there until it is time to leave. 5 If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off of your feet[a] as you leave the town, as a warning to them.”
6 So the apostles went out and traveled through all the towns, preaching the Good News and healing people everywhere.
Herod Is Confused About Jesus
7 Herod, the governor, heard about all the things that were happening and was confused, because some people said, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead.” 8 Others said, “Elijah has come to us.” And still others said, “One of the prophets who lived long ago has risen from the dead.” 9 Herod said, “I cut off John’s head, so who is this man I hear such things about?” And Herod kept trying to see Jesus.
More than Five Thousand Fed
10 When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then Jesus took them with him to a town called Bethsaida where they could be alone together. 11 But the people learned where Jesus went and followed him. He welcomed them and talked with them about God’s kingdom and healed those who needed to be healed.
12 Late in the afternoon, the twelve apostles came to Jesus and said, “Send the people away. They need to go to the towns and countryside around here and find places to sleep and something to eat, because no one lives in this place.”
13 But Jesus said to them, “You give them something to eat.”
They said, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish, unless we go buy food for all these people.” 14 (There were about five thousand men there.)
Jesus said to his followers, “Tell the people to sit in groups of about fifty people.”
15 So the followers did this, and all the people sat down. 16 Then Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish, and looking up to heaven, he thanked God for the food. Then he divided the food and gave it to the followers to give to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was gathered up, filling twelve baskets.
Jesus Is the Christ
18 One time when Jesus was praying alone, his followers were with him, and he asked them, “Who do the people say I am?”
19 They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah.[b] And others say you are one of the prophets from long ago who has come back to life.”
20 Then Jesus asked, “But who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Christ from God.”
21 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone, saying, 22 “The Son of Man must suffer many things. He will be rejected by the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law. He will be killed and after three days will be raised from the dead.”
23 Jesus said to all of them, “If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing to give up their lives daily to follow me. 24 Those who want to save their lives will give up true life. But those who give up their lives for me will have true life. 25 It is worthless to have the whole world if they themselves are destroyed or lost. 26 If people are ashamed of me and my teaching, then the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and with the glory of the Father and the holy angels. 27 I tell you the truth, some people standing here will see the kingdom of God before they die.”
Jesus Talks with Moses and Elijah
28 About eight days after Jesus said these things, he took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray. 29 While Jesus was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became shining white. 30 Then two men, Moses and Elijah,[c] were talking with Jesus. 31 They appeared in heavenly glory, talking about his departure which he would soon bring about in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and the others were very sleepy, but when they awoke fully, they saw the glory of Jesus and the two men standing with him. 33 When Moses and Elijah were about to leave, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” (Peter did not know what he was talking about.)
34 While he was saying these things, a cloud came and covered them, and they became afraid as the cloud covered them. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to him!”
36 When the voice finished speaking, only Jesus was there. Peter, John, and James said nothing and told no one at that time what they had seen.
Jesus Heals a Sick Boy
37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Jesus. 38 A man in the crowd shouted to him, “Teacher, please come and look at my son, because he is my only child. 39 An evil spirit seizes my son, and suddenly he screams. It causes him to lose control of himself and foam at the mouth. The evil spirit keeps on hurting him and almost never leaves him. 40 I begged your followers to force the evil spirit out, but they could not do it.”
41 Jesus answered, “You people have no faith, and your lives are all wrong. How long must I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”
42 While the boy was coming, the demon threw him on the ground and made him lose control of himself. But Jesus gave a strong command to the evil spirit and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 All the people were amazed at the great power of God.
Jesus Talks About His Death
While everyone was wondering about all that Jesus did, he said to his followers, 44 “Don’t forget what I tell you now: The Son of Man will be handed over to people.” 45 But the followers did not understand what this meant; the meaning was hidden from them so they could not understand. But they were afraid to ask Jesus about it.
Who Is the Greatest?
46 Jesus’ followers began to have an argument about which one of them was the greatest. 47 Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he took a little child and stood the child beside him. 48 Then Jesus said, “Whoever accepts this little child in my name accepts me. And whoever accepts me accepts the One who sent me, because whoever is least among you all is really the greatest.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is for Us
49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone using your name to force demons out of people. We told him to stop, because he does not belong to our group.”
50 But Jesus said to him, “Don’t stop him, because whoever is not against you is for you.”
A Town Rejects Jesus
51 When the time was coming near for Jesus to depart, he was determined to go to Jerusalem. 52 He sent some messengers ahead of him, who went into a town in Samaria to make everything ready for him. 53 But the people there would not welcome him, because he was set on going to Jerusalem. 54 When James and John, followers of Jesus, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven and destroy those people?”[d]
55 But Jesus turned and scolded them. [And Jesus said, “You don’t know what kind of spirit you belong to. 56 The Son of Man did not come to destroy the souls of people but to save them.”][e] Then they went to another town.
Following Jesus
57 As they were going along the road, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you any place you go.”
58 Jesus said to them, “The foxes have holes to live in, and the birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest his head.”
59 Jesus said to another man, “Follow me!”
But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 But Jesus said to him, “Let the people who are dead bury their own dead. You must go and tell about the kingdom of God.”
61 Another man said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to my family.”
62 Jesus said, “Anyone who begins to plow a field but keeps looking back is of no use in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve on Mission.[a] 1 Calling the Twelve together, Jesus gave them power and authority to cast out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them forth to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
3 He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking staff, nor sack, nor bread, nor money. Nor are you to have a second tunic. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you depart from that area. 5 As for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” 6 Then they set forth and traveled from village to village, preaching the gospel and curing diseases everywhere.
John the Baptist, Herod, and Jesus.[b] 7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was taking place, and he was perplexed because some people were saying that John had been raised from the dead, 8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. 9 But Herod said, “John I beheaded. Then who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he was anxious to see him.
10 Jesus Feeds Five Thousand Men.[c] On their return, the apostles reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them along and withdrew privately to a town named Bethsaida. 11 When the people learned of this, they followed him. Jesus welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God. He also cured those who were in need of healing.
12 When evening was approaching, the Twelve came to Jesus and said, “Send the people away now so that they can go to the villages and farms in the area and obtain food and lodging, for we are in a deserted place.” 13 He replied, “Give them something to eat yourselves.” They said, “All we have are five loaves and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were present about five thousand men.
Then he instructed his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty.” 15 They did so and made them sit down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed and broke them and gave them to the disciples to distribute among the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied. Then they gathered up what was left over—twelve baskets of fragments.
18 Peter’s Confession That Jesus Is the Christ.[d]Once while Jesus was praying by himself, he asked his disciples who were standing close by, “Who do the people say that I am?” 19 They answered, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.” 20 “But you,” he said to them, “who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him: “The Christ of God.” 21 Thereupon he gave them strict orders and commanded them not to tell this to anyone.
22 Jesus Predicts His Passion. He then went on to say, “The Son of Man must endure great suffering, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be put to death, and on the third day be raised.”
23 The Conditions of Discipleship.[e] Then he said to all who were with him, “Anyone who wishes to follow me must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
26 “If anyone is ashamed of me and of my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
28 Jesus Is Transfigured.[f] About eight days after he had said this, Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up on a mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face underwent a change, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly, there were two men talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which would come to pass in Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake they beheld his glory and the two men standing beside him.
33 When they were ready to leave, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not truly know what he was saying. 34 While he was speaking, a cloud came and cast its shadow over them, and the three disciples became frightened as they entered the cloud. 35 Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One.[g] Listen to him.” 36 After the voice had spoken, they beheld only Jesus. They kept silent and at that time they did not tell anyone about what they had witnessed.
End of the Galilean Ministry
37 Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon.[h] On the following day, when they descended from the mountain, a large crowd came forth to meet him. 38 Then, suddenly, a man in the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I implore you to look at my son. He is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and with a shriek suddenly throws him into convulsions until he begins to foam at the mouth. It hardly ever leaves him, continuously torturing him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.”
41 Jesus said in reply, “O unbelieving and perverse generation! How much longer shall I remain with you and have to endure you? Bring your son here!” 42 As the boy was approaching him, the demon threw him into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all those present were awestruck at the greatness of God.
Jesus Predicts His Passion a Second Time.[i] Amid the astonishment of the crowds at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to these words. The Son of Man is going to be handed over into the power of men.” 45 But they did not understand what he was saying. Its meaning was hidden from them so that they could not comprehend his message, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant.
46 True Greatness.[j] The disciples then began to argue about which of them was the greatest. 47 Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a child, placed him by his side, 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”
49 Whoever Is Not against You Is with You.[k] John then said, “Master, we saw someone expelling demons in your name, and we forbade him because he is not with us.” 50 Jesus replied, “Do not hinder him! For whoever is not against you is with you.”
The Journey to Jerusalem[l]
The Departure
51 Passing through Samaria.[m] As the time drew near for him to be taken up, Jesus resolutely set his sights on Jerusalem, 52 and he sent messengers ahead of him. They entered a Samaritan village to make arrangements for his arrival, 53 but the people there would not receive him because his destination was Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”[n] 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then they journeyed forth to another village.
57 The Cost of Following Jesus.[o] As they traveled along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus told him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
59 To another he said, “Follow me.” The man replied, “Lord, allow me to go first and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. You are to go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 Another man said, “I will follow you, Lord, but allow me first to say farewell to my family at home.” 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

- Luke 9:1 The Twelve are to share the mission of Jesus, to announce and attest the coming of salvation. Like their Lord, the apostles of the kingdom must be disinterested and conscious of the grave importance of the Gospel. They will accept hospitality simply and without consideration of personal interest. It is by clearly dissociating themselves from incredulity that they will announce the judgment that is coming (see Acts 13:51; 18:5).
- Luke 9:7 People speak of the return of Elijah as a precursor of the day of the Lord (Mal 3:23). They have known John. Now Jesus’ renown reaches the palace of the prince whom he will encounter in the course of his Passion (see Lk 23:7-12). The murderer of John evinces an idle curiosity. The action of Jesus compels each of us to ask ourselves: What do we say of Jesus?
- Luke 9:10 The preaching of Jesus so excites the crowd that they go so far as to disturb him in his retreat. He receives them and speaks to them about the kingdom of God. The miracle of the loaves is like a renewal of the prodigy of the manna expected at the time of the Messiah. In this account, Christians already discern the signs of the Eucharist: God nourishes his people. See also notes on Mt 14:13-21; 14:19; and 14:21; and Mk 6:43.
- Luke 9:18 At the opening of this passage, Jesus is found in prayer—thus Luke underlines the importance of the moment. Christ invites the Twelve to declare themselves concerning who he is. Peter precedes the others—in the Gospel, Peter’s faith has a large role (see Lk 22:31-33)—in acknowledging Christ as God, that is, as the expected Messiah whose unity with God is astonishing. In order to avoid all ambiguity about himself, Jesus recommends secrecy and for the first time announces his Passion. Contrary to what people expect, the Messiah will not save his people by a popular or political uprising but by his Death and Resurrection. The title “Son of Man” suggests the Passion and announces a glorious coming on the last day.
- Luke 9:23 To believe in Christ is to strive to share the mystery of his Death and Resurrection. To do so it is necessary for each of us to go beyond ourselves and our egoism in the ordinary conditions of life. See the kingdom of God: this expression evokes the appearances of the risen Lord or the work of the Spirit in the primitive Church.
- Luke 9:28 In a vision on a mountain, three disciples behold, for one instant, the divine splendor of Jesus. Moses and Elijah, who announced God’s plan in the Law and the Prophets, attest that it will now be accomplished by the Passion, that “passage” of Jesus, which is the new “Exodus.” As formerly in the Exodus God manifested himself in the cloud, now through the one he designates as his Son, his Chosen One (see Isa 42:1; 49:7), he will give to all people the definitive liberation. The evangelist hardly explains the unfolding of this mysterious event. He gives us the shattering experience of Jesus’ inner life to prompt our faith in Christ: to hear this man is to hear God.
- Luke 9:35 My Chosen One: this is similar to a Palestinian Jewish title found in the literature of the Dead Sea Scrolls and to Isa 42:1.
- Luke 9:37 Returning to the people, Jesus resumes the struggle. In contrast with the lapse of the disciples, the Messiah manifests his sovereign power against all the forces that enchain us, of which the person afflicted with a demon is a striking example.
- Luke 9:43 Amid popular success, Jesus keeps his eyes fixed on his Passion, the decisive act of salvation. For the believers, as for the disciples, it remains difficult to accept the necessity of the cross.
- Luke 9:46 As a result of their lack of pretense, children are the beloved of God and become models for the believer (see Lk 18:15-17). We must share this regard of Christ for the little ones, even in the way of thinking and living.
- Luke 9:49 It is necessary to accept the initiative of all those who make use of the name of Christ.
- Luke 9:51 We are at a crossroads in the life of Christ: Jesus begins to go to Jerusalem where his mystery is to be accomplished. This journey will take him from Galilee to the Holy City. In this section, Luke brings together a part of the teaching of Jesus that the other evangelists do not have or that they give in very different contexts. In these ten chapters, we find some of the most moving words of Christ about the mercy of God.
- Luke 9:51 The Samaritans refused passage to Jewish pilgrims on their way to the temple in Jerusalem, because they did not give recognition to that sanctuary. The critical text says simply that Jesus “rebuked” the disciples (v. 55); some manuscripts have: “And he said, ‘You do not know what kind of spirit you are of, for the Son of Man did not come to destroy lives, but to save them.’ ”
- Luke 9:54 An allusion to 2 Ki 1:10-12.
- Luke 9:57 Jesus demands an unconditional commitment from those who hesitate. The preaching of the kingdom is of primary urgency. On its account, we are to renounce every possession and free ourselves from even the most sacred human attachments.
