Kvinnorna som följde Jesus
8 Därefter vandrade Jesus från stad till stad och från by till by och predikade evangeliet om Guds rike. De tolv var med honom 2 och även några kvinnor, som hade blivit befriade från onda andar och botade från sjukdomar: Maria, som kallades Magdalena - från henne hade sju onda andar farit ut - 3 vidare Johanna som var hustru till Herodes förvaltare Kusas, och Susanna och många andra som tjänade dem med vad de ägde.
Liknelsen om såningsmannen
4 Då mycket folk samlades och man begav sig ut till honom från den ena staden efter den andra, talade han till dem i en liknelse: 5 "En såningsman gick ut för att så sitt utsäde. Och när han sådde föll en del vid vägen och trampades ner, och himlens fåglar åt upp det. 6 En del föll på stenig mark, och när det hade kommit upp torkade det bort, eftersom det inte hade någon fuktighet. 7 En del föll bland tistlar, och tistlarna växte upp samtidigt och kvävde det. 8 Men en del föll i god jord och växte upp och gav hundrafaldig skörd." När han hade sagt detta, ropade han: "Hör, du som har öron att höra med!"
Liknelsens innebörd
9 Hans lärjungar frågade honom sedan vad denna liknelse betydde. 10 Han svarade: "Ni har fått nåden att förstå Guds rikes hemligheter, men de andra får dem i liknelser, för att de skall se och ändå inte se och höra och ändå inte förstå. 11 Detta är liknelsens mening: Säden är Guds ord. 12 De vid vägen är de som har hört ordet, men sedan kommer djävulen och tar bort det ur deras hjärtan, så att de inte kan tro och bli frälsta. 13 De på stenig mark är de som tar emot ordet med glädje när de har hört det. Men de har ingen rot. De tror bara till en tid, och i frestelsens stund kommer de på fall. 14 Det som föll bland tistlar är de som har hört ordet men som mer och mer kvävs av bekymmer, rikedom och njutningslystnad och aldrig bär mogen frukt. 15 Men det som föll i god jord är de som har hört ordet och behåller det i ett uppriktigt och gott hjärta och bär frukt och är uthålliga.
16 Ingen tänder ett ljus och gömmer det under ett kärl eller ställer det under en bänk, utan man ställer det på en ljushållare, så att de som kommer in ser ljuset. 17 Ty inget är dolt som inte skall bli uppenbarat. Och inget är gömt som inte skall bli känt och komma i dagen. 18 Ge därför akt på vad ni hör. Ty den som har skall få, men den som inte har, från honom skall tas också det han tror sig ha."
Jesu familj
19 Jesu mor och bröder kom till honom, men de kunde inte ta sig fram för folkmassans skull. 20 Man sade då till honom: "Din mor och dina bröder står här utanför och vill träffa dig." 21 Han svarade dem: "Min mor och mina bröder är de som hör Guds ord och handlar efter det."
Jesus stillar stormen
22 En dag steg Jesus i en båt tillsammans med sina lärjungar, och han sade till dem: "Låt oss fara över till andra sidan sjön." De lade ut, 23 och medan de seglade somnade han. Då for en stormvind ner över sjön, och båten tog in så mycket vatten att den höll på att fyllas och de kom i sjönöd. 24 De gick då fram och väckte honom och sade: "Mästare, Mästare, vi går under!" Han vaknade och talade strängt till vinden och vågorna, och de lade sig och det blev lugnt. 25 Sedan frågade han dem: "Var är er tro?" Förskräckta och förundrade sade de till varandra: "Vem är han? Både vindarna och vattnet befaller han, och de lyder honom."
Jesus botar en besatt
26 De lade sedan till vid gerasenernas område, som ligger mitt emot Galileen. 27 När Jesus steg i land, kom en man från staden emot honom. Han var besatt av onda andar och hade inte på länge haft kläder på sig, och han bodde inte i något hus utan höll till bland gravarna. 28 Då han fick se Jesus ropade han och föll ner inför honom och skrek: "Vad har jag med dig att göra, Jesus, den högste Gudens Son? Jag ber dig: plåga mig inte!" 29 Jesus hade just befallt den orene anden att fara ut ur mannen. Länge hade anden hållit honom i sitt grepp. Man hade bundit honom med kedjor och fotbojor och bevakat honom, men han hade slitit sönder bojorna och drivits ut i ödemarken av den onde anden. 30 Jesus frågade honom: "Vad är ditt namn?" Han svarade: "Legion",[a] eftersom många onda andar hade farit in i honom. 31 Och de bad Jesus att han inte skulle befalla dem att fara ner i avgrunden. 32 Nu gick där en stor svinhjord och betade på berget, och de onda andarna bad att han skulle låta dem fara in i svinen, och det tillät han. 33 De onda andarna for ut ur mannen och in i svinen, och hjorden störtade utför branten ner i sjön och drunknade.
34 När herdarna såg vad som hände, flydde de och berättade om det inne i staden och ute på landet. 35 Och man gick ut för att se vad som hade hänt. De kom till Jesus och fann mannen, som de onda andarna hade farit ut ur, sitta vid Jesu fötter, klädd och vid sina sinnen. Då greps de av fruktan. 36 Men de som var ögonvittnen berättade för dem hur den besatte hade blivit hjälpt. 37 Därefter bad allt folket från gerasenernas område att Jesus skulle lämna dem, eftersom stor fruktan hade kommit över dem. Och han steg i en båt och vände tillbaka. 38 Mannen som de onda andarna hade farit ut ur bad att få följa med honom, men Jesus skickade i väg honom med orden: 39 "Vänd tillbaka hem och berätta allt vad Gud har gjort med dig." Och han gick och ropade ut över hela staden allt vad Jesus hade gjort med honom.
Jesus uppväcker Jairus dotter
40 När Jesus kom tillbaka, tog folket emot honom, eftersom alla väntade på honom. 41 Då kom det fram en man som hette Jairus, och han var föreståndare för synagogan. Han föll ner för Jesu fötter och bad att Jesus skulle komma hem till honom. 42 Han hade en enda dotter som var i tolvårsåldern, och hon låg för döden.
Jesus gick då med och folkskaran trängde sig inpå honom. 43 Där fanns en kvinna som hade lidit av blödningar i tolv år och som ingen hade kunnat bota. 44 Hon närmade sig Jesus bakifrån och rörde vid hörntofsen[b] på hans mantel, och genast stannade blödningen. 45 Jesus frågade: "Vem var det som rörde vid mig?" Då alla nekade, sade Petrus: "Mästare, folkmassan trycker och tränger sig inpå dig." 46 Men Jesus sade: "Någon rörde vid mig. Jag kände att kraft gick ut från mig." 47 När kvinnan såg att hon var upptäckt, kom hon darrande fram och föll ner för honom och förklarade inför allt folket varför hon hade rört vid honom och hur hon genast hade blivit botad. 48 Jesus sade till henne: "Min dotter, din tro har frälst dig. Gå i frid."
49 Medan han ännu talade, kom någon från synagogföreståndarens hus och sade: "Din dotter är död. Besvära inte Mästaren längre." 50 Jesus hörde det och sade till honom: "Var inte rädd. Tro endast, så får hon liv igen." 51 När han kom fram till huset, lät han ingen följa med in utom Petrus, Johannes och Jakob och flickans far och mor. 52 Alla grät och höll dödsklagan över henne. Men Jesus sade: "Gråt inte. Hon är inte död, hon sover." 53 Då hånskrattade de åt honom, för de visste att hon var död. 54 Men han tog flickans hand och ropade: "Flicka, stå upp!" 55 Hennes livsande återvände, och hon reste sig genast, och han sade till dem att ge henne något att äta. 56 Hennes föräldrar blev utom sig av häpnad. Men Jesus förbjöd dem att tala om för någon vad som hade hänt.

Kvinnorna som följde med Jesus
8 En tid därefter gav han sig ut på vandring till städer och byar i Galileen för att tala om för människorna att Guds rike skulle komma. Han tog med sig sina tolv lärjungar.
2 Några kvinnor, som hade blivit befriade från onda andar och sjukdomar, följde också med. Bland dem var Maria från Magdala som Jesus hade befriat från sju onda andar.
3 Vidare Johanna, Kusas hustru (Kusas var Herodes förvaltare och hade ansvaret för hans slott och hovets affärer), Susanna, och många andra som med sina privata tillgångar brukade hjälpa Jesus och hans lärjungar.
Liknelsen om lantbrukaren som sådde säd
4 En dag berättade han denna liknelse för en stor skara människor som samlats för att lyssna på honom, samtidigt som fler och fler fortsatte att komma från de omkringliggande städerna:
5 En lantbrukare gick ut på sin åker för att så. När han sådde föll en del av utsädet på stigen, och folk trampade på det, och fåglarna kom och åt upp det.
6 En del föll på den grunda och steniga jorden och började snart gro, men vissnade lika fort eftersom det inte var nog fuktigt i jorden.
7 En del föll bland tistlar, där de späda skotten snart kvävdes.
8 Men en del av utsädet föll i bördig jord och växte upp och gav hundra gånger större skörd än vad mannen hade sått. När Jesus hade berättat denna liknelse sa han: Om någon har öron att höra med, använd dem nu!
Jesus förklarar liknelsen om sådden
9 Hans lärjungar frågade honom vad berättelsen betydde.
10 Han svarade: Gud har gett er möjlighet att förstå dessa liknelser. De avslöjar sanningen om Guds rike. Men människorna här hör orden och förstår inte, precis som de gamla profeterna har förutsagt.
11 Detta är vad berättelsen betyder: Utsädet är Guds ord.
12 Den hårda stigen, där en del av det föll, är som vissa människor som hör Guds ord. Snart kommer djävulen och tar bort det ur deras hjärtan och hindrar dem från att tro och bli frälsta.
13 Den steniga marken liknar de människor som tycker om att höra predikningar och blir entusiastiska, men budskapet slår inte rot hos dem. De vet att det är sant, och de tror en tid. Men så fort de sätts på prov ger de upp sin tro.
14 Det som sås bland tistlar är en bild av de människor som hör budskapet och tror på det, men som låter det kvävas av livets bekymmer, rikedomar, plikter och nöjen. Därför växer de inte till.
15 Den goda jorden däremot är människor med goda och uppriktiga hjärtan. De lyssnar till Guds ord och håller sig till det, och sprider det till andra så att de också kommer till tro.
16 En annan gång frågade han: Har ni någonsin hört att man tänder en lampa och sedan täcker över den så att den inte kan lysa? Nej, lampor sätter man upp där de kan synas.
17 På samma sätt ska allt som nu är dolt en dag föras fram i ljuset och bli synligt för alla.
18 Var därför noga med hur ni lyssnar och tar vara på ordet. För den som har han ska få mer, men den som inget har från honom ska tas till och med det som han tror att han har.
Jesus berättar om sin verkliga familj
19 När hans mor och bröder en gång kom för att hälsa på honom kunde de inte komma in i huset där han undervisade, för det var fullt av folk.
20 När Jesus hörde att de stod utanför och ville träffa honom
21 sa han: Min mor och mina bröder - det är alla de som hör Guds budskap och lyder det.
Jesus visar att han är herre över vinden
22 En dag när han var ute i en båt tillsammans med lärjungarna, föreslog han att de skulle fara över till andra sidan sjön.
23 Under tiden lade han sig ner för att få en stunds vila, och medan han sov började det blåsa. Snart var det full storm, båten tog in vatten, och de var verkligen illa ute.
24 Lärjungarna rusade då fram och väckte Jesus: Herre, Herre, vi sjunker! ropade de. Då vaknade han och talade skarpt till stormen: Var tyst! sa han, och vinden och vågorna lade sig och allt blev lugnt!
25 Sedan frågade han dem: Hur är det egentligen med er tro? Rädda och häpna sa de till varandra: Vem är han, eftersom till och med vindarna och vågorna lyder honom?
Jesus skickar onda andar in i en svinhjord
26 De kom över till andra sidan av sjön och lade till i närheten av staden Gergesa mitt emot Galileen.
27 När han steg ur båten kom en man från staden emot honom. Han hade länge varit besatt av onda andar och levde hemlös och naken bland gravarna.
28 Så snart han såg Jesus började han skrika och föll till marken framför honom: Vad vill du mig, Jesus, du den högste Gudens son? Jag ber dig, var snäll och plåga mig inte, ropade han.
29 Jesus hade nämligen redan befallt den onde anden att lämna mannen. Anden hade honom ofta helt i sitt våld. Till och med när han bands med kedjor slet han sig loss och flydde ut i öknen.
30 Vad heter du? frågade Jesus. Legion, svarade han, för mannen var fylld av tusentals andar.
31 De onda andarna bad Jesus att inte skicka iväg dem till avgrunden, som var djävulens och de onda andarnas tillhåll.
32 På en bergssluttning i närheten gick en svinhjord just då och betade. De onda andarna ville då fara in i svinen och Jesus tillät dem att göra det.
33 Då lämnade de onda andarna mannen och for in i svinen, och genast rusade hela svinhjorden utför bergssluttningen och störtade ner i sjön, där de drunknade.
34 När de som vaktade svinen såg vad som hände, sprang de mot den närbelägna staden, och under vägen berättade de om nyheten.
35-36 Snart kom en stor skara människor ut för att på ort och ställe ta reda på vad som hade hänt. Då fick de se mannen som hade varit andebesatt sitta helt lugnt vid Jesu fötter, påklädd och fullständigt normal! Skräckslagna och förvånade hörde de ögonvittnen berätta hur den besatte mannen hade blivit botad.
37 Händelsen hade skrämt upp dem så totalt att de bad Jesus gå därifrån och lämna dem ifred. Därför lämnade han dem och for tillbaka till andra sidan sjön igen.
38 Mannen som hade varit besatt bad att få följa med, men Jesus skickade iväg honom och sa:
39 Gå tillbaka till din familj och berätta vilket under Gud har gjort med dig.Och han gick sin väg och berättade vitt och brett för alla i hela staden om det under som Jesus hade gjort med honom.
Jesus botar en kvinna med blödningar och uppväcker en död flicka
40 På andra sidan sjön tog folket emot Jesus med öppna armar, för alla hade väntat på honom.
41 Då kom en man som hette Jairos, föreståndare för en synagoga, och föll ner vid Jesu fötter och bad honom komma med hem,
42 för hans enda barn, en liten tolvårs flicka, höll på att dö. Jesus följde då med Jairos.
43-44 På vägen dit trängde sig folket på honom, och i folkhopen fanns en kvinna som hade lidit av blödningar i tolv år och inte blivit frisk, trots att hon lagt ut allt hon ägde på läkare. Hon närmade sig nu Jesus bakifrån och rörde vid hans mantel. I samma ögonblick stannade blödningen.
45 Vem rörde vid mig? frågade Jesus.När alla nekade, sa Petrus: Mästare, det är ju så många som tränger på från alla håll.
46 Men Jesus sa till honom: Nej, det var någon som medvetet rörde vid mig, för jag kände att läkande kraft gick ut från mig.
47 När kvinnan förstod att Jesus visste om hennes tilltag, började hon darra och föll på knä framför honom. Hon berättade varför hon hade rört vid honom och att hon genast blivit frisk.
48 Dotter, sa han till henne, din tro har botat dig. Gå i frid.
49 Medan han fortfarande talade till henne kom en budbärare från Jairos hus med nyheten att den lilla flickan hade dött. Det är ingen idé att du besvärar Mästaren längre, sa han till fadern.
50 Men när Jesus hörde vad som hänt, sa han till Jairos: Var inte rädd! Tro bara, så blir allt bra!
51 När de kom fram till huset lät inte Jesus någon följa med in utom Petrus, Jakob och Johannes och den lilla flickans far och mor.
52 Alla grät för flickans skull, men han sa: Sluta med er gråt! Hon är inte död, hon sover bara!
53 Då hånskrattade de åt honom för de visste ju att hon hade dött.
54 Men han tog hennes hand och sa: Res på dig, min lilla vän!
55 I samma ögonblick fick hon liv igen och reste sig genast upp. Ge henne något att äta! sa han.
56 Hennes föräldrar blev överlyckliga, men Jesus förbjöd dem att berätta för någon vad som hänt.

The Group with Jesus
8 After this, while Jesus was traveling through some cities and small towns, he preached and told the Good News about God’s kingdom. The twelve apostles were with him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of sicknesses and evil spirits: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; 3 Joanna, the wife of Cuza (the manager of Herod’s house); Susanna; and many others. These women used their own money to help Jesus and his apostles.
A Story About Planting Seed
4 When a great crowd was gathered, and people were coming to Jesus from every town, he told them this story:
5 “A farmer went out to plant his seed. While he was planting, some seed fell by the road. People walked on the seed, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some seed fell on rock, and when it began to grow, it died because it had no water. 7 Some seed fell among thorny weeds, but the weeds grew up with it and choked the good plants. 8 And some seed fell on good ground and grew and made a hundred times more.”
As Jesus finished the story, he called out, “Let those with ears use them and listen!”
9 Jesus’ followers asked him what this story meant.
10 Jesus said, “You have been chosen to know the secrets about the kingdom of God. But I use stories to speak to other people so that:
‘They will look, but they may not see.
They will listen, but they may not understand.’ Isaiah 6:9
11 “This is what the story means: The seed is God’s message. 12 The seed that fell beside the road is like the people who hear God’s teaching, but the devil comes and takes it away from them so they cannot believe it and be saved. 13 The seed that fell on rock is like those who hear God’s teaching and accept it gladly, but they don’t allow the teaching to go deep into their lives. They believe for a while, but when trouble comes, they give up. 14 The seed that fell among the thorny weeds is like those who hear God’s teaching, but they let the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life keep them from growing and producing good fruit. 15 And the seed that fell on the good ground is like those who hear God’s teaching with good, honest hearts and obey it and patiently produce good fruit.
Use What You Have
16 “No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. Instead, the person puts it on a lampstand so those who come in will see the light. 17 Everything that is hidden will become clear, and every secret thing will be made known. 18 So be careful how you listen. Those who have understanding will be given more. But those who do not have understanding, even what they think they have will be taken away from them.”
Jesus’ True Family
19 Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but there was such a crowd they could not get to him. 20 Someone said to Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.”
21 Jesus answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who listen to God’s teaching and obey it!”
Jesus Calms a Storm
22 One day Jesus and his followers got into a boat, and he said to them, “Let’s go across the lake.” And so they started across. 23 While they were sailing, Jesus fell asleep. A very strong wind blew up on the lake, causing the boat to fill with water, and they were in danger.
24 The followers went to Jesus and woke him, saying, “Master! Master! We will drown!”
Jesus got up and gave a command to the wind and the waves. They stopped, and it became calm. 25 Jesus said to his followers, “Where is your faith?”
The followers were afraid and amazed and said to each other, “Who is this that commands even the wind and the water, and they obey him?”
A Man with Demons Inside Him
26 Jesus and his followers sailed across the lake from Galilee to the area of the Gerasene[a] people. 27 When Jesus got out on the land, a man from the town who had demons inside him came to Jesus. For a long time he had worn no clothes and had lived in the burial caves, not in a house. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him. He said with a loud voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 He said this because Jesus was commanding the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had taken hold of him. Though he had been kept under guard and chained hand and foot, he had broken his chains and had been forced by the demon out into a lonely place.
30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
He answered, “Legion,”[b] because many demons were in him. 31 The demons begged Jesus not to send them into eternal darkness.[c] 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding on a hill, and the demons begged Jesus to allow them to go into the pigs. So Jesus allowed them to do this. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd ran down the hill into the lake and was drowned.
34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and told about this in the town and the countryside. 35 And people went to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind, because the demons were gone. But the people were frightened. 36 The people who saw this happen told the others how Jesus had made the man well. 37 All the people of the Gerasene country asked Jesus to leave, because they were all very afraid. So Jesus got into the boat and went back to Galilee.
38 The man whom Jesus had healed begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Go back home and tell people how much God has done for you.” So the man went all over town telling how much Jesus had done for him.
Jesus Gives Life to a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman
40 When Jesus got back to Galilee, a crowd welcomed him, because everyone was waiting for him. 41 A man named Jairus, a leader of the synagogue, came to Jesus and fell at his feet, begging him to come to his house. 42 Jairus’ only daughter, about twelve years old, was dying.
While Jesus was on his way to Jairus’ house, the people were crowding all around him. 43 A woman was in the crowd who had been bleeding for twelve years,[d] but no one was able to heal her. 44 She came up behind Jesus and touched the edge of his coat, and instantly her bleeding stopped. 45 Then Jesus said, “Who touched me?”
When all the people said they had not touched him, Peter said, “Master, the people are all around you and are pushing against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, because I felt power go out from me.” 47 When the woman saw she could not hide, she came forward, shaking, and fell down before Jesus. While all the people listened, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Jesus said to her, “Dear woman, you are made well because you believed. Go in peace.”
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue leader and said to him, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
50 When Jesus heard this, he said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just believe, and your daughter will be well.”
51 When Jesus went to the house, he let only Peter, John, James, and the girl’s father and mother go inside with him. 52 All the people were crying and feeling sad because the girl was dead, but Jesus said, “Stop crying. She is not dead, only asleep.”
53 The people laughed at Jesus because they knew the girl was dead. 54 But Jesus took hold of her hand and called to her, “My child, stand up!” 55 Her spirit came back into her, and she stood up at once. Then Jesus ordered that she be given something to eat. 56 The girl’s parents were amazed, but Jesus told them not to tell anyone what had happened.

Hearing the Word
The Women Who Minister to Jesus. 1 After that, Jesus journeyed through towns and villages preaching and proclaiming the kingdom of God. Traveling with him were the Twelve, 2 [a]as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; 3 Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza; Susanna; and many others. These women provided for them out of their own resources.
The Parable of the Sower.[b] 4 When a large crowd gathered together as people from every town flocked to him, he said in a parable: 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some of the seed fell along the path and was trampled upon, and the birds of the sky ate it up. 6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, it withered for lack of moisture. 7 Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. 8 And some fell onto good soil, and when it grew it produced a crop of a hundredfold.”
After saying this, he cried out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
The Purpose of Parables.[c] 9 Then his disciples asked him what the parable meant. 10 He said, “To you has been granted knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but for others they are made known in parables, so that
‘looking they may not see,
and hearing they may not understand.’
11 The Explanation of the Parable of the Sower.[d]“The meaning of the parable is this. The seed is the word of God. 12 The seed on the path represents those who hear, but then the devil comes and carries off the word from their hearts so that they may not come to believe and be saved. 13 Those on rock are the ones who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a short while, but in time of trial they fall away.
14 “That which has fallen among thorns are the ones who have heard, but as they go along, they are choked by the concerns and riches and pleasures of life, and they fail to produce mature fruit. 15 But that which is on rich soil are the ones who, when they have heard the word with a good and upright heart, keep it and yield a harvest through their perseverance.
16 The Parable of the Lamp.[e]“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a pot or places it under a bed. Rather he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing is concealed that will not be made known and brought to light. 18 Take great care, therefore, about how you listen. For to the one who has, more will be given; from the one who does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away.”
19 The True Family of Jesus.[f] Then his mother and his brethren arrived, looking for him, but they could not get near him because of the crowd. 20 He was told, “Your mother and your brethren[g] are standing outside, and they want to see you.” 21 But he replied, “My mother and my brethren are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
The Progressive Revelation of the Mystery of Jesus
22 Jesus Calms the Storm.[h] One day, Jesus got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake.” And so they set forth, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. Then a windstorm swept down on the lake. As a result, the boat was becoming filled with water, and they were in danger. 24 So they went to him and awakened him, saying, “Master! Master! We are perishing!”
Then he awakened and rebuked the wind and the turbulent waves. They subsided and there was calm. 25 He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were filled with fear and a sense of awe, and they said to one another, “Who can this be? He gives orders to the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
26 Jesus Casts Out a Legion of Demons.[i] Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 As he stepped ashore, he was approached by a man from the town who was possessed by demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes. Moreover, he did not live in a house but among the tombs.
28 When the man caught sight of Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore you, do not torment me!” 29 For he had ordered the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times in the past it had seized him, and on such occasions they used to restrain him with chains and shackles, but he would manage to break loose and be driven by the demon into the wilds.
30 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.
32 Now on the mountainside a large herd of pigs was feeding, and they pleaded with him to let them go into the pigs. He allowed this. 33 The demons then came out of the man and entered the pigs. Thereupon the herd charged down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
34 When those tending the herd saw what had occurred, they ran off and reported the incident in the town and throughout the countryside. 35 As a result, people came out to see what had happened. When they came near Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out sitting at Jesus’ feet, fully clothed and in his right mind, and they were frightened.
36 Those who had been eye-witnesses to the incident told how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and went away.
38 The man from whom the demons had gone out pleaded that he be allowed to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your home and give witness to what God has done for you.” He then departed, proclaiming throughout the town what Jesus had done for him.
40 Jesus Heals a Woman and Raises a Child.[j] When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they had all been waiting for him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the synagogue, came forward. Throwing himself at the feet of Jesus, he pleaded with him to come to his house, 42 because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. And as Jesus went forth, the crowds were pressing in on him.
43 There was a woman who had been suffering from bleeding for twelve years, but no one had been able to cure her affliction. 44 Coming up behind him, she touched the fringe of his cloak, and her bleeding stopped immediately.
45 Jesus then asked, “Who was it who touched me?” When everyone denied doing so, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are surrounding you and pressing closely upon you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I could sense power going out from me.”
47 When the woman realized that she had not escaped notice, she came forward, trembling, and knelt down before him. In the presence of all the people, she related why she had touched him and how she had been healed immediately. 48 Then Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”
49 While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue leader and said, “Your daughter has died. Do not bother the Teacher any further.” 50 When Jesus heard this, he said, “Do not be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be saved.”
51 When he arrived at the house, he permitted no one to go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Everyone was weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Stop your weeping! She is not dead; she is asleep.” 53 They laughed at him because they knew that she had died.
54 However, Jesus took her by the hand and called out to her, “Little child, arise.” 55 Her spirit returned, and she stood up at once. Then Jesus directed that she be given something to eat. 56 Her parents were stunned, but he gave them strict instructions to tell no one what had happened.

- Luke 8:2 Some women belong to the group of disciples; this was an occurrence quite rare at that period. As for Mary of Magdala (Mary Magdalene), the expression “seven demons” suggests some violent illness with symptoms that were disconcerting for a woman.
- Luke 8:4 Since the time of the Prophets, harvesting was a current image of the Judgment (Joel 4:13). Sowing evokes the activity of Jesus. Jesus knows from experience that preaching the Gospel converts only hearts that are well disposed. Nevertheless, he underlines with optimism the growth of the seed: despite all risks and obstacles, the Word of God will make progress among human beings.
- Luke 8:9 At the moment, only the disciples are sensitive to the riches of the Gospel; the others do not yet have a free heart. See also note on Mt 13:11.
- Luke 8:11 In the meditation of the early communities, the parable of the sower becomes a lesson for the believer. In daily life, in trials, in the pleasures of life, the work of the demon is an obstacle to the Gospel. Jesus knows this. He also knows the generosity of which humans are capable. He puts us on guard but also calls us to make a persevering effort to let our life be transformed by his teachings.
- Luke 8:16 Are the mysteries of the kingdom definitively denied to others (v. 10)? No. The secret is not forever. Soon the disciples will bring the message to all people (see Lk 12:1-12). How will they receive it? We will be judged on the yield of the Word in our life (see Lk 19:25-26).
- Luke 8:19 The true family of Jesus is made up of those who hearken to the Word. Luke places this episode as a conclusion to the texts on receiving the Gospel. Belonging to Jesus is the joy of the believer.
- Luke 8:20 Brethren: i.e., according to Hebrew idiom, close relatives. See note on Mt 12:46.
- Luke 8:22 God alone is master of the sea (see Pss 65:7; 89:10; 107:25-28). The authority of Jesus over the unleashed elements shows his power divine.
- Luke 8:26 The incident is meant to show that Jesus is stronger than all the forces of evil lumped together, the forces of Satan himself. Jesus goes to face these forces in a pagan region east of the Lake of Tiberias, where, it was thought, Satan must be reigning supreme. There is a herd of pigs there, animals unclean in Jewish eyes; the herd dashes over the cliff, signifying the return of the demons to their hell.
- Luke 8:40 This episode places before us two distressed people. The first is a father on the verge of losing his young daughter, with the rites of mourning under the specter of death already organized. The second is a woman humiliated by a sickness that carries the stigma of legal impurity, preventing her from participating in religious services and from approaching the Prophet (see Lev 15:19-27). Jesus intervenes in their distress and manifests his power and goodness, both of which are those of God. Nevertheless, he refuses to give his intervention a dramatic character; the only witnesses of the girl’s raising from the dead—described in the same way as the action of Elijah (see 1 Ki 17:17, 22)—will be apostles, who are no longer seeking miracles. Here then is the portrait of Jesus: he brings life to those who approach him with faith.

The Parable of the Sower(A)
8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.(B) The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)(C) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s(D) household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”
When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(E)
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,(F) but to others I speak in parables, so that,

A Lamp on a Stand
16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(K) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(L) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(M)
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(N)
19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(O) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”

Jesus Calms the Storm(Q)(R)
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(S) we’re going to drown!”
He got up and rebuked(T) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(U) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(V)(W)
26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[b] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(X) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(Y) I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.(Z)
32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake(AA) and was drowned.
34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,(AB) dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed(AC) man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,(AD) because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(AE)
40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,(AF) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(AG) for twelve years,[c] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,(AH) and immediately her bleeding stopped.
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master,(AI) the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me;(AJ) I know that power has gone out from me.”(AK)
47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(AL) Go in peace.”(AM)
49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(AN) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”
50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”
51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(AO) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(AP) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(AQ)
53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(AR) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up.
