Jesus förhörs av Pilatus
23 Sedan förde hela rådet Jesus till landshövdingen Pilatus.
2 De började omedelbart anklaga honom och säga: Den här mannen hetsar upp vårt folk genom att säga att de inte ska betala skatt till den romerska staten och genom att påstå att han är vår Messias och kung.
3 Då frågade Pilatus honom: Stämmer det? Är du deras kung? Ja, svarade Jesus, du själv säger det.
4 Då vände sig Pilatus till översteprästerna och till folket och sa: Jag kan inte finna den här mannen skyldig till något brott.
5 Då blev de alldeles vilda och ropade: Men han gör uppror mot staten överallt där han går fram, i hela landet från Galileen till Jerusalem.
Jesus inför Herodes
6 Är han från Galileen? frågade Pilatus.
7 När de svarade ja skickade Pilatus honom till kung Herodes. Galileen lydde nämligen under Herodes, och han råkade vara i Jerusalem just då.
8 Herodes blev glad över att få tillfälle att träffa Jesus. Han hade nämligen hört mycket om honom och hade hoppats att få se honom göra ett under.
9 Han ställde fråga på fråga till Jesus, men Jesus svarade honom inte.
10 Under tiden stod översteprästerna och de religiösa ledarna vid sidan om, och de fortsatte med sina våldsamma anklagelser.
11 Till slut började Herodes och hans soldater att håna och förlöjliga Jesus. Sedan satte de på honom en kunglig mantel och skickade honom tillbaka till Pilatus.
12 Den dagen blev Herodes och Pilatus vänner med varandra. Tidigare hade de varit fiender.
Pilatus utlämnar Jesus till att korsfästas
13 Sedan kallade Pilatus samman översteprästerna, de judiska ledarna och folket
14 och tillkännagav sin dom:Ni har fört den här mannen till mig och anklagat honom för att leda ett uppror mot den romerska staten. Jag har noga förhört honom om detta, och finner honom oskyldig.
15 Herodes har kommit till samma slutsats och har sänt honom tillbaka till oss. Ingenting som den här mannen har gjort ger anledning till dödsstraff.
16 Därför ska jag låta piska honom och sedan släppa honom fri.
17-18 Då började folkhopen vråla och skrika, och alla ropade med en mun: Döda honom, och släpp Barabbas lös åt oss!
19 (Barabbas satt fängslad för mord och för att ha lett ett uppror i Jerusalem.)
20 Än en gång försökte Pilatus att diskutera med dem, för han ville gärna släppa Jesus.
21 Men de ropade: Korsfäst honom, korsfäst honom!
22 Ytterligare en gång, för tredje gången, frågade han: Varför det? Vad har han gjort? Jag har inte funnit några skäl att döma honom till döden. Jag kommer därför att piska honom och låta honom gå.
23 Men de ropade ännu högre att Jesus måste dö. Deras vilda rop fick Pilatus att till slut ge med sig.
24 Han dömde Jesus till döden som de krävde,
25 och på deras begäran frigav han i stället Barabbas, som var anklagad för uppror och mord. Men Jesus överlämnade han åt dem, så att de kunde göra vad de ville med honom.
Jesus förs bort för att korsfästas
26 På vägen till avrättningsplatsen mötte folkhopen Simon från Kyrene, som just var på väg till Jerusalem från landsbygden. Honom tvingade de att gå med och bära Jesu kors.
27 Stora skaror följde efter Jesus till avrättningen, bland dem många förtvivlade och gråtande kvinnor.
28 Till dem vände sig Jesus om och sa: Jerusalems döttrar! Gråt inte över mig, utan över er själva och era barn.
29 Det kommer en tid, när de kvinnor som inte har några barn ska räknas som lyckliga.
30 Då ska människorna längta efter att bergen begraver dem och att höjderna gömmer dem.
31 För om den oskyldige måste lida så mycket, vad kan då inte de skyldiga vänta sig?
Jesus blir korsfäst
32-33 Två andra brottslingar leddes också ut för att avrättas tillsammans med Jesus på en plats som kallades Skallen. Där korsfästes de alla tre, Jesus på korset i mitten och de två brottslingarna på var sin sida om honom.
34 Far, förlåt dessa människor, bad Jesus, för de vet inte vad de gör.Under tiden kastade soldaterna tärning om hans kläder och delade dem emellan sig.
35 Folkhopen stod och tittade på, och de judiska ledarna skrattade och hånade honom. Han var bra på att hjälpa andra, sa de. Nu kan han hjälpa sig själv, om han verkligen är den Messias som Gud sänt.
36 Också soldaterna hånade honom och räckte honom surt vin att dricka.
37 Och de ropade till honom: Om du är judarnas kung, så rädda dig själv!
38 Man hade nämligen satt upp en skylt upptill på korset. DETTA ÄR JUDARNAS KUNG, stod det på grekiska, latin och hebreiska.
39 En av de brottslingar, som hängde vid sidan av Jesus, gjorde narr av honom och sa: Är det du som är Messias? Bevisa det då genom att rädda dig själv och oss på samma gång!
40-41 Men den andre brottslingen tillrättavisade honom och sa: Har du inte respekt för Gud ens när du håller på att dö? Vi förtjänar att dö för våra brott, men den här mannen har inte gjort en enda ond handling.
42 Sedan sa han: Jesus, kom ihåg mig när du kommer till ditt rike.
43 Och Jesus svarade: Jag försäkrar dig att redan i dag ska du vara med mig i paradiset.
Jesus dör på korset
44 Det var nu mitt på dagen, och under tre timmar blev det mörkt över hela landet fram till klockan tre.
45 Solen var helt förmörkad, och plötsligt brast det tjocka förhänget, som hängde i templet, mitt itu, uppifrån och ända ner.
46 Då ropade Jesus: Far, till dig lämnar jag min ande, och med de orden dog han.
47 När kaptenen för den romerska militärpluton, som hade hand om avrättningarna, såg vad som hänt, ärade han Gud och sa: Jag är övertygad om att den här mannen var oskyldig.
48 Och när folket, som hade varit åskådare till korsfästelsen, såg att Jesus var död, gick de hem förfärade.
49 Men under tiden stod alla hans vänner tillsammans med kvinnorna, som hade följt med honom från Galileen, på avstånd och såg alltsammans.
Jesus begravs
50-52 En man, som hette Josef, och som kom från Arimataia, en stad i Judeen, vände sig sedan till Pilatus och bad om att få ta hand om Jesu kropp. Han var medlem av den judiska högsta domstolen och en gudfruktig man, som hela tiden hade väntat på att Messias skulle komma, och han tog avstånd från de andra judiska ledarnas beslut och handlingar.
53 Han tog ner Jesu kropp från korset och lindade in den i en lång linnesvepning och lade den i en ny, oanvänd grav, som var uthuggen i en klippa.
54 Detta skedde sent på fredagseftermiddagen, just innan sabbaten skulle börja.
55 Kvinnorna från Galileen följde efter honom och såg hur han lade kroppen i graven.
56 Sedan gick de hem och gjorde i ordning välluktande kryddor och oljor för att balsamera honom. Men när solen gick ner och det blev sabbat höll de sig stilla i enlighet med den judiska lagens bestämmelser.

23 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.
21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.
23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.
28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, This Is The King Of The Jews.
39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.
49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:
51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
Luke 23

Jesus Before Pilate
23 (A)Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man (B)misleading our nation and (C)forbidding us to give tribute to (D)Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, (E)a king.” 3 (F)And Pilate asked him, (G)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, (H)“You have said so.” 4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, (I)“I find no guilt in this man.” 5 But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, (J)from Galilee even to this place.”
Jesus Before Herod
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that he belonged to (K)Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, (L)for he had long desired to see him, (M)because he had heard about him, and he was hoping (N)to see some sign done by him. 9 So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 And Herod with his soldiers (O)treated him with contempt and (P)mocked him. Then, (Q)arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 12 And (R)Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before this they had been at enmity with each other.
13 Pilate then called together the chief priests and (S)the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man (T)as one who was misleading the people. And (U)after examining him before you, behold, I (V)did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15 Neither did Herod, for (W)he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. 16 (X)I will therefore punish and release him.”[a]
Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified
18 (Y)But they all cried out together, (Z)“Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas”— 19 a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and (AA)for murder. 20 Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, 21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22 A third time he said to them, “Why? (AB)What evil has he done? (AC)I have found in him no guilt deserving death. (AD)I will therefore punish and release him.” 23 But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison (AE)for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, (AF)but he delivered Jesus over to their will.
The Crucifixion
26 (AG)And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. 27 And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were (AH)mourning and lamenting for him. 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For behold, (AI)the days are coming when they will say, (AJ)‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 (AK)Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For (AL)if they do these things when (AM)the wood is green, what will happen (AN)when it is dry?”
32 (AO)Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 (AP)And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, (AQ)one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, “Father, (AR)forgive them, (AS)for they know not what they do.”[b] And they cast lots (AT)to divide his garments. 35 And (AU)the people stood by, watching, (AV)but (AW)the rulers (AX)scoffed at him, saying, (AY)“He saved others; (AZ)let him save himself, (BA)if he is (BB)the Christ of God, (BC)his Chosen One!” 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and (BD)offering him sour wine 37 and saying, (BE)“If you are (BF)the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 (BG)There was also an inscription over him,[c] “This is (BH)the King of the Jews.”

Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me (BL)when you come into your kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in (BM)paradise.”
The Death of Jesus
44 (BN)It was now about the sixth hour,[e] and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,[f] 45 while the sun's light failed. And (BO)the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, (BP)calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (BQ)into your hands I (BR)commit my spirit!” And having said this (BS)he breathed his last. 47 Now (BT)when the centurion saw what had taken place, (BU)he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home (BV)beating their breasts. 49 And all (BW)his acquaintances and (BX)the women who had followed him from Galilee (BY)stood at a distance watching these things.
Jesus Is Buried
50 (BZ)Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he (CA)was looking for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and (CB)laid him in a tomb cut in stone, (CC)where no one had ever yet been laid. 54 It was the day of (CD)Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.[g] 55 (CE)The women (CF)who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. 56 Then they returned and (CG)prepared spices and ointments.
On the Sabbath they rested (CH)according to the commandment.
