Tentazione di Gesù Cristo
4 (A)Gesù, pieno di Spirito Santo, ritornò dal Giordano e fu condotto dallo Spirito nel deserto per quaranta giorni, dove era tentato dal diavolo[a]. 2 Durante quei giorni non mangiò nulla; e quando furono trascorsi, ebbe fame. 3 Il diavolo gli disse: «Se tu sei Figlio di Dio, di’ a questa pietra che diventi pane». 4 Gesù gli rispose [, dicendo]: «Sta scritto: “Non di pane soltanto vivrà l’uomo [, ma di ogni parola di Dio]”[b]».
5 Il diavolo lo condusse in alto[c], gli mostrò in un attimo tutti i regni del mondo e gli disse: 6 «Ti darò tutta questa potenza e la gloria di questi regni; perché essa mi è stata data e la do a chi voglio. 7 Se dunque tu ti prostri ad adorarmi, sarà tutta tua». 8 Gesù gli rispose: «[Vattene via da me, Satana[d].] Sta scritto: “Adora il Signore, il tuo Dio, e a lui solo rendi il tuo culto”[e]».
9 Allora lo portò a Gerusalemme e lo pose sul pinnacolo del tempio, e gli disse: «Se tu sei Figlio di Dio, gettati giù di qui, 10 perché sta scritto:
“Egli darà ordine ai suoi angeli a tuo riguardo, di proteggerti”[f]
11 e “Essi ti porteranno sulle mani, perché tu non urti col piede contro una pietra”[g]».
12 Gesù gli rispose: «È stato detto: “Non tentare il Signore Dio tuo”[h]».
13 Allora il diavolo, dopo aver finito ogni tentazione, si allontanò da lui fino a un momento opportuno.
Gesù Cristo in Galilea
14 (B)Gesù, nella potenza dello Spirito, se ne tornò in Galilea; e la sua fama si sparse per tutta la regione. 15 E insegnava nelle loro sinagoghe, glorificato da tutti.
Gesù nella sinagoga di Nazaret
16 (C)Si recò a Nazaret, dov’era stato allevato e, com’era solito, entrò in giorno di sabato nella sinagoga e si alzò per leggere[i]. 17 Gli fu dato il libro del profeta Isaia e, aperto il libro,[j] trovò quel passo dov’era scritto:
18 «Lo Spirito del Signore è sopra di me, perciò mi ha unto per evangelizzare i poveri; mi ha inviato [per guarire quelli che hanno il cuore spezzato,] per annunciare la liberazione ai prigionieri e il recupero della vista ai ciechi; per rimettere in libertà gli oppressi,
19 per proclamare l’anno accettevole del Signore[k]».
20 Poi, chiuso il libro[l] e resolo all’inserviente, si mise a sedere; e gli occhi di tutti nella sinagoga erano fissi su di lui.
21 Egli prese a dire loro: «Oggi si è adempiuta questa Scrittura, che voi avete udito[m]». 22 Tutti gli rendevano testimonianza e si meravigliavano delle parole di grazia che uscivano dalla sua bocca, e dicevano: «Non è costui il figlio di Giuseppe?» 23 Ed egli disse loro: «Certo, voi mi citerete questo proverbio: “Medico, cura te stesso; fa’ anche qui nella tua patria tutto quello che abbiamo udito essere avvenuto in Capernaum!”». 24 Ma egli disse: «In verità vi dico che nessun profeta è ben accetto nella sua patria. 25 Anzi, vi dico in verità che ai giorni di Elia, quando il cielo fu chiuso per tre anni e sei mesi e vi fu grande carestia in tutto il paese, c’erano molte vedove in Israele; 26 eppure a nessuna di esse fu mandato Elia, bensì a una vedova in Sarepta di Sidone. 27 Al tempo del profeta Eliseo c’erano molti lebbrosi in Israele; eppure nessuno di loro fu purificato[n], bensì Naaman, il Siro».
28 Udendo queste cose, tutti nella sinagoga furono pieni d’ira. 29 Si alzarono, lo cacciarono fuori dalla città e lo condussero fin sul ciglio del monte, sul quale era costruita la loro città, per precipitarlo giù. 30 Ma egli, passando in mezzo a loro, se ne andò.
Gesù guarisce un indemoniato a Capernaum
31 (D)Poi discese a Capernaum, città della Galilea, e qui insegnava alla gente nei giorni di sabato. 32 Ed essi si stupivano del suo insegnamento perché parlava con autorità[o].
33 Or nella sinagoga si trovava un uomo che aveva uno spirito di demonio impuro, il quale gridò a gran voce [, dicendo]: 34 «Ahi[p]! Che c’è fra noi e te, Gesù Nazareno? Sei venuto per mandarci in perdizione? Io so chi sei: il Santo di Dio!» 35 Gesù lo sgridò, dicendo: «Taci, ed esci da quest’uomo!» E il demonio, gettatolo a terra lì nel mezzo, uscì da lui senza fargli alcun male. 36 E tutti furono presi da stupore e discutevano tra di loro, dicendo: «Che parola è questa? Egli comanda con autorità e potenza agli spiriti immondi, ed essi escono». 37 E la sua fama si diffondeva in ogni luogo della regione.
Gesù guarisce la suocera di Pietro e altri malati
38 (E)Poi, alzatosi e uscito dalla sinagoga, entrò in casa di Simone. Or la suocera di Simone era tormentata da una gran febbre; e lo pregarono per lei. 39 Chinatosi su di lei, egli sgridò la febbre, e la febbre la lasciò; ed ella subito si alzò e si mise a servirli.
40 (F)Al tramontar del sole, tutti quelli che avevano dei sofferenti di varie malattie li conducevano a lui; ed egli li guariva, imponendo le mani a ciascuno. 41 Anche i demòni uscivano da molti, gridando e dicendo: «Tu sei [il Cristo,] il Figlio di Dio!» Ma egli li sgridava e non permetteva loro di parlare, perché sapevano che egli era il Cristo.
42 Poi, fattosi giorno, uscì e andò in un luogo deserto; e le folle lo cercavano e giunsero fino a lui, e lo trattenevano perché non si allontanasse da loro. 43 Ma egli disse loro: «Anche alle altre città bisogna che io annunci la buona notizia del regno di Dio; poiché per questo sono stato mandato». 44 E andava predicando nelle sinagoghe della Giudea[q].

Tentazione nel deserto
4 Gesù, pieno di Spirito Santo, si allontanò dal Giordano e fu condotto dallo Spirito nel deserto 2 dove, per quaranta giorni, fu tentato dal diavolo. Non mangiò nulla in quei giorni; ma quando furono terminati ebbe fame. 3 Allora il diavolo gli disse: «Se tu sei Figlio di Dio, dì a questa pietra che diventi pane». 4 Gesù gli rispose: «Sta scritto: Non di solo pane vivrà l'uomo». 5 Il diavolo lo condusse in alto e, mostrandogli in un istante tutti i regni della terra, gli disse: 6 «Ti darò tutta questa potenza e la gloria di questi regni, perché è stata messa nelle mie mani e io la do a chi voglio. 7 Se ti prostri dinanzi a me tutto sarà tuo». 8 Gesù gli rispose: «Sta scritto: Solo al Signore Dio tuo ti prostrerai, lui solo adorerai». 9 Lo condusse a Gerusalemme, lo pose sul pinnacolo del tempio e gli disse: «Se tu sei Figlio di Dio, buttati giù; 10 sta scritto infatti:
Ai suoi angeli darà ordine per te,
perché essi ti custodiscano;
11 e anche:
essi ti sosterranno con le mani,
perché il tuo piede non inciampi in una pietra».
12 Gesù gli rispose: «E' stato detto: Non tenterai il Signore Dio tuo». 13 Dopo aver esaurito ogni specie di tentazione, il diavolo si allontanò da lui per ritornare al tempo fissato.
III. MINISTERO DI GESU' IN GALILEA
Gesù inaugura la predicazione
14 Gesù ritornò in Galilea con la potenza dello Spirito Santo e la sua fama si diffuse in tutta la regione. 15 Insegnava nelle loro sinagoghe e tutti ne facevano grandi lodi.
Gesù a Nazaret
16 Si recò a Nazaret, dove era stato allevato; ed entrò, secondo il suo solito, di sabato nella sinagoga e si alzò a leggere. 17 Gli fu dato il rotolo del profeta Isaia; apertolo trovò il passo dove era scritto:
18 Lo Spirito del Signore è sopra di me;
per questo mi ha consacrato con l'unzione,
e mi ha mandato per annunziare ai poveri un lieto
messaggio,
per proclamare ai prigionieri la liberazione
e ai ciechi la vista;
per rimettere in libertà gli oppressi,
19 e predicare un anno di grazia del Signore.
20 Poi arrotolò il volume, lo consegnò all'inserviente e sedette. Gli occhi di tutti nella sinagoga stavano fissi sopra di lui. 21 Allora cominciò a dire: «Oggi si è adempiuta questa Scrittura che voi avete udita con i vostri orecchi». 22 Tutti gli rendevano testimonianza ed erano meravigliati delle parole di grazia che uscivano dalla sua bocca e dicevano: «Non è il figlio di Giuseppe?». 23 Ma egli rispose: «Di certo voi mi citerete il proverbio: Medico, cura te stesso. Quanto abbiamo udito che accadde a Cafarnao, fàllo anche qui, nella tua patria!». 24 Poi aggiunse: «Nessun profeta è bene accetto in patria. 25 Vi dico anche: c'erano molte vedove in Israele al tempo di Elia, quando il cielo fu chiuso per tre anni e sei mesi e ci fu una grande carestia in tutto il paese; 26 ma a nessuna di esse fu mandato Elia, se non a una vedova in Sarepta di Sidone. 27 C'erano molti lebbrosi in Israele al tempo del profeta Eliseo, ma nessuno di loro fu risanato se non Naaman, il Siro».
28 All'udire queste cose, tutti nella sinagoga furono pieni di sdegno; 29 si levarono, lo cacciarono fuori della città e lo condussero fin sul ciglio del monte sul quale la loro città era situata, per gettarlo giù dal precipizio. 30 Ma egli, passando in mezzo a loro, se ne andò.
Gesù insegna a Cafarnao e guarisce un indemoniato
31 Poi discese a Cafarnao, una città della Galilea, e al sabato ammaestrava la gente. 32 Rimanevano colpiti dal suo insegnamento, perché parlava con autorità. 33 Nella sinagoga c'era un uomo con un demonio immondo e cominciò a gridare forte: 34 «Basta! Che abbiamo a che fare con te, Gesù Nazareno? Sei venuto a rovinarci? So bene chi sei: il Santo di Dio!». 35 Gesù gli intimò: «Taci, esci da costui!». Eil demonio, gettatolo a terra in mezzo alla gente, uscì da lui, senza fargli alcun male. 36 Tutti furono presi da paura e si dicevano l'un l'altro: «Che parola è mai questa, che comanda con autorità e potenza agli spiriti immondi ed essi se ne vanno?». 37 E si diffondeva la fama di lui in tutta la regione.
Guarigione della suocera di Simone
38 Uscito dalla sinagoga entrò nella casa di Simone. La suocera di Simone era in preda a una grande febbre e lo pregarono per lei. 39 Chinatosi su di lei, intimò alla febbre, e la febbre la lasciò. Levatasi all'istante, la donna cominciò a servirli.
Molte guarigioni
40 Al calar del sole, tutti quelli che avevano infermi colpiti da mali di ogni genere li condussero a lui. Ed egli, imponendo su ciascuno le mani, li guariva. 41 Da molti uscivano demòni gridando: «Tu sei il Figlio di Dio!». Ma egli li minacciava e non li lasciava parlare, perché sapevano che era il Cristo.
Gesù abbandona in segreto Cafarnao e percorre la Giudea
42 Sul far del giorno uscì e si recò in un luogo deserto. Ma le folle lo cercavano, lo raggiunsero e volevano trattenerlo perché non se ne andasse via da loro. 43 Egli però disse: «Bisogna che io annunzi il regno di Dio anche alle altre città; per questo sono stato mandato». 44 E andava predicando nelle sinagoghe della Giudea.

The Temptation of Jesus
4 (A)Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, (B)returned from the Jordan and was being led around [a]by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for (C)forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had finished, He was hungry. 3 And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘(D)Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
5 (E)And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of [b](F)the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this [c](G)dominion and [d]its glory, (H)for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore if You [e]worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” 8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is written, ‘(I)You shall worship the [f]Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
9 (J)And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,
‘(K)He will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’
11 and,
‘(L)On their hands they will bear You up,
Lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘(M)You shall not put the [g]Lord your God to the test.’”
13 And when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
14 And (N)Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and (O)news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15 And He was (P)teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
16 And He came to (Q)Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and as was His custom, (R)He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and (S)stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “(T)The Spirit of the [h]Lord is upon Me,
Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.
He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set free those who are oppressed,
19 (U)To proclaim the favorable year of the [i]Lord.”
20 And He (V)closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and (W)sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your [j]hearing.” 22 And all were [k]speaking well of Him and marveling at the [l]gracious words which were coming forth from His lips, and they were saying, “(X)Is this not Joseph’s son?” 23 And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard took place (Y)at Capernaum, do also here in (Z)your hometown.’” 24 And He said, “Truly I say to you, (AA)no prophet is welcome in his hometown. 25 But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel (AB)in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land, 26 and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but (AC)only to [m]Zarephath, in the land of (AD)Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but (AE)only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things, 29 and they stood up and (AF)drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the edge of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. 30 But (AG)passing through their midst, He went on His way.
Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Demon
31 And (AH)He came down to (AI)Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; 32 and (AJ)they were amazed at His teaching, for (AK)His [n]message was with authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man [o]possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “[p]Let us alone! [q](AL)What do we have to do with You, Jesus the (AM)Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—(AN)the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus (AO)rebuked it, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 And amazement came upon them all, and they were talking with one another saying, “What is [r]this message? For (AP)with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.” 37 And (AQ)the report about Him was spreading into every place in the surrounding district.
Peter’s Mother-in-Law and Many Others Healed
38 (AR)Then He stood up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was (AS)suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him [s]to help her. 39 And standing over her, He (AT)rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she stood up and [t]began waiting on them.
40 (AU)And while (AV)the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him, and (AW)laying His hands on each one of them, He was (AX)healing them. 41 And demons also were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are (AY)the Son of God!” But (AZ)rebuking them, He was (BA)not allowing them to speak, because they knew Him to be the [u]Christ.
42 (BB)When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were eagerly seeking for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. 43 But He said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, (BC)for I was sent for this purpose.”
44 So He kept on preaching in the synagogues (BD)of [v]Judea.

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(B) left the Jordan(C) and was led by the Spirit(D) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(E) he was tempted[a] by the devil.(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(G) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[b]”(H)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(I) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(J) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[c]”(K)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[d]”(L)
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[e]”(M)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(N) he left him(O) until an opportune time.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14 Jesus returned to Galilee(P) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(Q) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(R) and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth,(S) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(T) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(U) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(V)
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(W) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f](X)
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(Y) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(Z) in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(AA)
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(AB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(AC)
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(AD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(AE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(AF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[g] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(AG)
28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(AH) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(AI)
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AJ)
31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(AK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(AL) because his words had authority.(AM)
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(AN) Jesus of Nazareth?(AO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(AP)—the Holy One of God!”(AQ)
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(AR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed(AS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(AT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(AU)
Jesus Heals Many(AV)(AW)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(AX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(AY) he healed them.(AZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(BA) But he rebuked(BB) them and would not allow them to speak,(BC) because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(BD) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(BE)
