And there was a certain man of (A)Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had borne no children. (B)Then the angel of Yahweh appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you [a]shall be with child and give birth to a son. So now, be careful (C)not to drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing. (D)For behold, you [b]shall be with child and give birth to a son, and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a (E)Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.” Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, “(F)A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. And I did not ask him where he came from, nor did he tell me his name. And he said to me, ‘Behold, you [c]shall be with child and give birth to a son, so now you shall not drink wine or strong drink, and you shall not eat any unclean thing, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”

Then Manoah entreated Yahweh and said, “O Lord, please let (G)the man of God whom You have sent come to us again that he may instruct us what to do for the boy who is to be born.” And God listened to the voice of Manoah; and (H)the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, and she said to him, “Behold, (I)the man who came the other day to me has appeared to me.” 11 Then Manoah arose and followed his wife, and when he came to the man he said to him, “Are you (J)the man who spoke to the woman?” And he said, “I am.” 12 So Manoah said, “Now your words will come to pass. What shall be the judgment governing the boy and his work?” 13 So (K)the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, “(L)Let the woman be careful in all that I said. 14 She should not eat anything that comes from the (M)vine, nor drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; let her keep all that I commanded.”

15 Then Manoah said to (N)the angel of Yahweh, “Please let us delay you so that we may prepare a young goat for you.” 16 And the angel of Yahweh said to Manoah, “Though you delay me, (O)I will not eat your [d]food, but if you prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to Yahweh.” For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of Yahweh. 17 Then Manoah said to the angel of Yahweh, “(P)What is your name, so that when your words come to pass, we may honor you?” 18 But the angel of Yahweh said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is [e](Q)wonderful?” 19 So (R)Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering and offered it on the rock to Yahweh, and He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on. 20 Indeed, it happened when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, that the angel of Yahweh went up in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife saw this, so they (S)fell on their faces to the ground.

21 Now the angel of Yahweh did not appear to Manoah or his wife again. (T)Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Yahweh. 22 So Manoah said to his wife, “(U)We will surely die, for we have seen God.” 23 But his wife said to him, “If Yahweh had desired to put us to death, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have (V)shown us all these things, nor would He have let us hear things like this at this time.”

24 Then the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson; and the (W)child grew up, and Yahweh blessed him. 25 And (X)the Spirit of Yahweh began to stir him in [f](Y)Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

There was a certain man of Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. His wife was barren, having borne no children.(A) And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Although you are barren, having borne no children, you shall conceive and bear a son.(B) Now be careful not to drink wine or strong drink or to eat anything unclean,(C) for you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor is to come on his head, for the boy shall be a nazirite to God from birth. It is he who shall begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”(D) Then the woman came and told her husband, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like that of an angel[a] of God, most awe-inspiring; I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name,(E) but he said to me, ‘You shall conceive and bear a son. So then, drink no wine or strong drink and eat nothing unclean, for the boy shall be a nazirite to God from birth to the day of his death.’ ”

Then Manoah entreated the Lord and said, “O my Lord, I pray, let the man of God whom you sent come to us again and teach us what we are to do concerning the boy who will be born.”(F) God listened to Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field, but her husband Manoah was not with her. 10 So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “The man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.” 11 Manoah got up and followed his wife and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And he said, “I am.” 12 Then Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, what is to be the boy’s rule of life; what is he to do?” 13 The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Let the woman give heed to all that I said to her.(G) 14 She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine. She is not to drink wine or strong drink or eat any unclean thing. She is to observe everything that I commanded her.”(H)

15 Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Allow us to detain you and prepare a kid for you.”(I) 16 The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat your food, but if you want to prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord.)(J) 17 Then Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your words come true?”(K) 18 But the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask my name? It is too wonderful.”(L)

19 So Manoah took the kid with the grain offering and offered it on the rock to the Lord, to him who works[b] wonders.[c](M) 20 When the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar while Manoah and his wife looked on, and they fell on their faces to the ground.(N) 21 The angel of the Lord did not appear again to Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah realized that it was the angel of the Lord.(O) 22 And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, for we have seen God.”(P) 23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering at our hands or shown us all these things or[d] announced to us such things as these.”

24 The woman bore a son and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the Lord blessed him.(Q) 25 The spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.(R)
