³ So now I say, ^(A)I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become ^(B)thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.”

¹³ know for certain that ^(A)the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, ^(B)but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you.

⁵⁵ But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those of them whom you let remain shall be as ^(A)barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall trouble you in the land where you dwell.

¹⁶ And ^(A)you shall consume all the peoples that the Lord your God will give over to you. ^(B)Your eye shall not pity them, neither shall you serve their gods, for that would be ^(C)a snare to you.

^6 (A)And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.

^21 (A)I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died,

^12 (A)Take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a ^(B)snare in your midst.

³³ They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me; for if you serve their gods, ^(A)it will surely be a snare to you.”

Solomon Turns from the Lord

11 Now ^(A)King Solomon loved many foreign women, along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, ² from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the people of Israel, ^(B)“You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you, for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. ³ He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. ⁴ For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and ^(C)his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, ^(D)as was the heart of David his father. ⁵ For Solomon went after ^(E)Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after ^(F)Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. ⁶ So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done. ⁷ Then Solomon built a high place for ^(G)Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for ^(H)Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem.
