^12 (A)Yet the people of Manasseh could not take possession of those cities, but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.

Failure to Complete the Conquest

^27 (A)Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. ²⁸ When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.

^29 (A)I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the wild beasts multiply against you. ³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have increased and possess the land. ^31 (B)And I will set your border from the Red Sea to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the Euphrates,^[a] for ^(C)I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you shall drive them out before you. ^32 (D)You shall make no covenant with them and their gods. ³³ They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me; for if you serve their gods, ^(E)it will surely be a snare to you.”

¹² Let not ^(A)sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. ^13 (B)Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but ^(C)present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. ¹⁴ For ^(D)sin ^(E)will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

¹⁰ However, ^(A)they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived in the midst of Ephraim to this day but have been made ^(B)to do forced labor.

⁶³ But the ^(A)Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ^(B)the people of Judah could not drive out, ^(C)so the Jebusites dwell with the people of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

⁵² then ^(A)you shall drive out ^(B)all the inhabitants of the land from before you and destroy all their ^(C)figured stones and destroy all their metal images and demolish all their high places. ⁵³ And you shall take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it. ^54 (D)You shall inherit the land by lot according to your clans. ^(E)To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance. Wherever the lot falls for anyone, that shall be his. According to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit. ⁵⁵ But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those of them whom you let remain shall be as ^(F)barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall trouble you in the land where you dwell. ⁵⁶ And I will do to you ^(G)as I thought to do to them.”
