A Ira de Jonas
4 Jonas, porém, ficou profundamente descontente com isso e enfureceu-se. 2 Ele orou ao Senhor: “Senhor, não foi isso que eu disse quando ainda estava em casa? Foi por isso que me apressei em fugir para Társis. Eu sabia que tu és Deus misericordioso e compassivo, muito paciente, cheio de amor e que prometes castigar mas depois te arrependes. 3 Agora, Senhor, tira a minha vida, eu imploro, porque para mim é melhor morrer do que viver”.
4 O Senhor lhe respondeu: “Você tem alguma razão para essa fúria?”
5 Jonas saiu e sentou-se num lugar a leste da cidade. Ali, construiu para si um abrigo, sentou-se à sua sombra e esperou para ver o que aconteceria com a cidade. 6 Então o Senhor Deus fez crescer uma planta sobre Jonas, para dar sombra à sua cabeça e livrá-lo do calor, o que deu grande alegria a Jonas. 7 Mas na madrugada do dia seguinte, Deus mandou uma lagarta atacar a planta e ela secou-se. 8 Ao nascer do sol, Deus trouxe um vento oriental muito quente, e o sol bateu na cabeça de Jonas, ao ponto de ele quase desmaiar. Com isso ele desejou morrer, e disse: “Para mim seria melhor morrer do que viver”.
9 Mas Deus disse a Jonas: “Você tem alguma razão para estar tão furioso por causa da planta?”
Respondeu ele: “Sim, tenho! E estou furioso ao ponto de querer morrer”.
10 Mas o Senhor lhe disse: “Você tem pena dessa planta, embora não a tenha podado nem a tenha feito crescer. Ela nasceu numa noite e numa noite morreu. 11 Contudo, Nínive tem mais de cento e vinte mil pessoas que não sabem nem distinguir a mão direita da esquerda[a], além de muitos rebanhos. Não deveria eu ter pena dessa grande cidade?”

2 (A)И моли се той Господу и рече: о, Господи! не говорех ли това, когато бях още в моята земя? Затова и побягнах в Тарсис, защото знаех, че Ти си Бог благ и милосърден, дълготърпелив и многомилостив и съжаляваш за бедствието.
3 (B)И сега, Господи, вземи душата ми от мене, защото по-добре е да умра, нежели да живея.
4 И рече Господ: нима това те тъй силно огорчи?
5 И излезе Иона из града, седна на изток от града, направи си там сенница и седна под нея на сянка, за да види, какво ще стане с града.
6 И направи Господ Бог, та израсна растение, и то се издигна над Иона, за да има над главата му сянка, и да го избави от огорчението му; Иона твърде много се зарадва на това растение.
7 И нареди Бог тъй, че на другия ден, кога се зазори, червей подгриза растението, и то засъхна.
8 (C)А кога изгря слънце, напрати Бог горещ източен вятър, и слънцето почна да препича главата на Иона, тъй че той изнемогна и се молеше да умре, казвайки: „подобре да умра, нежели да живея“.
9 И рече Бог на Иона: „нима тъй силно се огорчи за растението?“ Той рече: „твърде се огорчих, дори до смърт“.
10 Тогава Господ рече: „тебе ти е жал за растението, за което не си се трудил и което не си отглеждал, което в една нощ израсна и в една нощ пропадна.
11 (D)Аз ли да не пожаля Ниневия, тоя голям град, в който има повече от сто и двайсет хиляди души, които не могат да различат дясна ръка от лява, – и много добитък?“

Jonah’s Anger and God’s Kindness
4 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry. 2 So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I (A)fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a (B)gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm. 3 (C)Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for (D)it is better for me to die than to live!”
4 Then the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
5 So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city. 6 And the Lord God prepared a [a]plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be shade for his head to deliver him from his misery. So Jonah [b]was very grateful for the plant. 7 But as morning dawned the next day God prepared a worm, and it so damaged the plant that it withered. 8 And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, (E)“It is better for me to die than to live.”
9 Then God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?”
And he said, “It is right for me to be angry, even to death!”
10 But the Lord said, “You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which [c]came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should I not pity Nineveh, (F)that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons (G)who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?”

4 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
2 And he prayed unto the Lord, and said, I pray thee, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
3 Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
4 Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry?
5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
6 And the Lord God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9 And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
10 Then said the Lord, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
