But (A)Yahweh hurled a great wind on the sea, and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship gave thought to [a]breaking apart. Then the sailors became fearful, and every man cried to (B)his god, and they (C)hurled the [b]cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it [c]for them. But Jonah had gone down below into the innermost part of the vessel, lain down, and fallen deep asleep. So the captain came near to him and said to him, “How is it that you are deeply sleeping? Arise, (D)call on your god. Perhaps your (E)god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.”

Then each man said to the other, “Come, let us [d](F)have the lots fall so we may know on whose account this calamitous evil has struck us.” So they [e]had the lots fall, and the (G)lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, “(H)Tell us, now! On whose account has this calamitous evil struck us? What is your (I)occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” And he said to them, “I am a (J)Hebrew, and I (K)fear Yahweh, the (L)God of heaven, who (M)made the sea and the dry land.”

But the Lord hurled a great wind onto the sea, and there was such a great storm on the sea that the ship was about to break apart. The sailors were afraid, and each one cried out to his gods. They threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the ship’s load.

Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship. He was lying down and sleeping soundly. The captain approached him and said, “How can you be sleeping so soundly? Get up and call on your god! Maybe your god will treat us with favor so that we will not perish.”

Then the sailors said to each other, “Come on, let’s cast lots so that we can find out whose fault it is that this disaster has come to us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

So they said to him, “Please tell us whose fault it is that this disaster has come to us! What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? What people are you from?”

He answered, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of Heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
