But (A)Yahweh hurled a great wind on the sea, and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship gave thought to [a]breaking apart. Then the sailors became fearful, and every man cried to (B)his god, and they (C)hurled the [b]cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it [c]for them. But Jonah had gone down below into the innermost part of the vessel, lain down, and fallen deep asleep. So the captain came near to him and said to him, “How is it that you are deeply sleeping? Arise, (D)call on your god. Perhaps your (E)god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.”

Then each man said to the other, “Come, let us [d](F)have the lots fall so we may know on whose account this calamitous evil has struck us.” So they [e]had the lots fall, and the (G)lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, “(H)Tell us, now! On whose account has this calamitous evil struck us? What is your (I)occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” And he said to them, “I am a (J)Hebrew, and I (K)fear Yahweh, the (L)God of heaven, who (M)made the sea and the dry land.”

Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.(A) All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.(B)

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call(C) on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”(D)

Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.”(E) They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.(F) So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”

He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord,(G) the God of heaven,(H) who made the sea(I) and the dry land.(J)
