Jesus Is the Bread of Life

22 On the next day the people were still on the other side of the sea. They noticed that only one boat was there and that Jesus had not stepped into that boat with his disciples. The disciples had gone away without him. 23 Other boats from Tiberias arrived near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into these boats and went to the city of Capernaum to look for Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

26 Jesus replied to them, “I can guarantee this truth: You’re not looking for me because you saw miracles. You are looking for me because you ate as much of those loaves as you wanted. 27 Don’t work for food that spoils. Instead, work for the food that lasts into eternal life. This is the food the Son of Man will give you. After all, the Father has placed his seal of approval on him.”

28 The people asked Jesus, “What does God want us to do?”

29 Jesus replied to them, “God wants to do something for you so that you believe in the one whom he has sent.”

30 The people asked him, “What miracle are you going to perform so that we can see it and believe in you? What are you going to do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the desert. Scripture says, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

32 Jesus said to them, “I can guarantee this truth: Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 God’s bread is the man who comes from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread all the time.”

35 Jesus told them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never become hungry, and whoever believes in me will never become thirsty. 36 I’ve told you that you have seen me. However, you don’t believe in me. 37 Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me. I will never turn away anyone who comes to me. 38 I haven’t come from heaven to do what I want to do. I’ve come to do what the one who sent me wants me to do. 39 The one who sent me doesn’t want me to lose any of those he gave me. He wants me to bring them back to life on the last day. 40 My Father wants all those who see the Son and believe in him to have eternal life. He wants me to bring them back to life on the last day.”

41 The Jews began to criticize Jesus for saying, “I am the bread that came from heaven.” 42 They asked, “Isn’t this man Jesus, Joseph’s son? Don’t we know his father and mother? How can he say now, ‘I came from heaven’?”

43 Jesus responded, “Stop criticizing me! 44 People cannot come to me unless the Father who sent me brings them to me. I will bring these people back to life on the last day. 45 The prophets wrote, ‘God will teach everyone.’ Those who do what they have learned from the Father come to me. 46 I’m saying that no one has seen the Father. Only the one who is from God has seen the Father. 47 I can guarantee this truth: Every believer has eternal life.

48 “I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert and died. 50 This is the bread that comes from heaven so that whoever eats it won’t die. 51 I am the living bread that came from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. The bread I will give to bring life to the world is my flesh.”

52 The Jews began to quarrel with each other. They said, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus told them, “I can guarantee this truth: If you don’t eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have the source of life in you. 54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will bring them back to life on the last day. 55 My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood live in me, and I live in them. 57 The Father who has life sent me, and I live because of the Father. So those who feed on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came from heaven. It is not like the bread your ancestors ate. They eventually died. Those who eat this bread will live forever.”

59 Jesus said this while he was teaching in a synagogue in Capernaum. 60 When many of Jesus’ disciples heard him, they said, “What he says is hard to accept. Who wants to listen to him anymore?”

61 Jesus was aware that his disciples were criticizing his message. So Jesus asked them, “Did what I say make you lose faith? 62 What if you see the Son of Man go where he was before? 63 Life is spiritual. Your physical existence doesn’t contribute to that life. The words that I have spoken to you are spiritual. They are life. 64 But some of you don’t believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning those who wouldn’t believe and the one who would betray him. 65 So he added, “That is why I told you that people cannot come to me unless the Father provides the way.”

66 Jesus’ speech made many of his disciples go back to the lives they had led before they followed Jesus. 67 So Jesus asked the twelve apostles, “Do you want to leave me too?”

68 Simon Peter answered Jesus, “Lord, to what person could we go? Your words give eternal life. 69 Besides, we believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

I Am the Bread of Life

22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only (A)one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord (B)had given thanks. 24 (C)So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and (D)went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, (E)“Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (F)you are seeking me, not because you saw (G)signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 (H)Do not work for the food that perishes, but for (I)the food that endures to eternal life, which (J)the Son of Man will give to you. For on (K)him God the Father has (L)set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing (M)the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, (N)that you believe in him whom (O)he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, (P)“Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 (Q)Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, (R)‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is (S)he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, (T)“Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, (U)“I am the bread of life; (V)whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 (W)All that (X)the Father gives me will come to me, and (Y)whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For (Z)I have come down from heaven, not to do (AA)my own will but (AB)the will of him (AC)who sent me. 39 And (AD)this is the will of him who sent me, (AE)that I should lose nothing of (AF)all that he has given me, but (AG)raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who (AH)looks on the Son and (AI)believes in him (AJ)should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, (AK)“I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, (AL)“Is not this Jesus, (AM)the son of Joseph, whose father and mother (AN)we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me (AO)draws him. And (AP)I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, (AQ)‘And they will all be (AR)taught by God.’ (AS)Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 (AT)not that anyone has seen the Father except (AU)he who is from God; he (AV)has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AW)whoever believes has eternal life. 48 (AX)I am the bread of life. 49 (AY)Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and (AZ)they died. 50 (BA)This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it (BB)and not die. 51 I am the living bread (BC)that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give (BD)for the life of the world is (BE)my flesh.”

52 The Jews then (BF)disputed among themselves, saying, (BG)“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (BH)the Son of Man and drink his blood, you (BI)have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (BJ)has eternal life, and (BK)I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood (BL)abides in me, and I in him. 57 As (BM)the living Father (BN)sent me, and (BO)I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 (BP)This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread[a] the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus[b] said these things in the synagogue, as he taught (BQ)at Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 (BR)When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, (BS)knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see (BT)the Son of Man (BU)ascending to (BV)where he was before? 63 (BW)It is the Spirit who gives life; (BX)the flesh is no help at all. (BY)The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But (BZ)there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus (CA)knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and (CB)who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you (CC)that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 (CD)After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to (CE)the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (CF)the words of eternal life, 69 and (CG)we have believed, and have come to know, that (CH)you are (CI)the Holy One of God.”

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake(A) realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.(B) 23 Then some boats from Tiberias(C) landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.(D) 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

Jesus the Bread of Life

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi,(E) when did you get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me,(F) not because you saw the signs(G) I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures(H) to eternal life,(I) which the Son of Man(J) will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal(K) of approval.”

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe(L) in the one he has sent.”(M)

30 So they asked him, “What sign(N) then will you give that we may see it and believe you?(O) What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna(P) in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’[a](Q)

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven(R) and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”(S)

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am(T) the bread of life.(U) Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes(V) in me will never be thirsty.(W) 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me(X) will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven(Y) not to do my will but to do the will(Z) of him who sent me.(AA) 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,(AB) but raise them up at the last day.(AC) 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son(AD) and believes in him shall have eternal life,(AE) and I will raise them up at the last day.”

41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,(AF) whose father and mother we know?(AG) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”(AH)

43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,(AI) and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’[b](AJ) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;(AK) only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.(AL) 48 I am the bread of life.(AM) 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.(AN) 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,(AO) which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread(AP) that came down from heaven.(AQ) Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”(AR)

52 Then the Jews(AS) began to argue sharply among themselves,(AT) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(AU) of the Son of Man(AV) and drink his blood,(AW) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(AX) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(AY) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(AZ) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(BA) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Disciples Desert Jesus

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples(BB) said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”(BC)

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?(BD) 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man(BE) ascend to where he was before!(BF) 63 The Spirit gives life;(BG) the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[c] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known(BH) from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.(BI) 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”(BJ)

66 From this time many of his disciples(BK) turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.(BL)

68 Simon Peter answered him,(BM) “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.(BN) 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”(BO)

  3. John 6:63 Or are Spirit; or are spirit

22 On the morrow, the multitude that was standing on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other little boat there except one -- that into which his disciples entered -- and that Jesus went not in with his disciples into the little boat, but his disciples went away alone,

23 (and other little boats came from Tiberias, nigh the place where they did eat the bread, the Lord having given thanks),

24 when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus is not there, nor his disciples, they also themselves did enter into the boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus;

25 and having found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, `Rabbi, when hast thou come hither?'

26 Jesus answered them and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were satisfied;

27 work not for the food that is perishing, but for the food that is remaining to life age-during, which the Son of Man will give to you, for him did the Father seal -- [even] God.'

28 They said therefore unto him, `What may we do that we may work the works of God?'

29 Jesus answered and said to them, `This is the work of God, that ye may believe in him whom He did send.'

30 They said therefore to him, `What sign, then, dost thou, that we may see and may believe thee? what dost thou work?

31 our fathers the manna did eat in the wilderness, according as it is having been written, Bread out of the heaven He gave them to eat.'

32 Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread out of the heaven; but my Father doth give you the true bread out of the heaven;

33 for the bread of God is that which is coming down out of the heaven, and giving life to the world.'

34 They said, therefore, unto him, `Sir, always give us this bread.'

35 And Jesus said to them, `I am the bread of the life; he who is coming unto me may not hunger, and he who is believing in me may not thirst -- at any time;

36 but I said to you, that ye also have seen me, and ye believe not;

37 all that the Father doth give to me will come unto me; and him who is coming unto me, I may in no wise cast without,

38 because I have come down out of the heaven, not that I may do my will, but the will of Him who sent me.

39 `And this is the will of the Father who sent me, that all that He hath given to me I may not lose of it, but may raise it up in the last day;

40 and this is the will of Him who sent me, that every one who is beholding the Son, and is believing in him, may have life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day.'

41 The Jews, therefore, were murmuring at him, because he said, `I am the bread that came down out of the heaven;'

42 and they said, `Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we have known? how then saith this one -- Out of the heaven I have come down?'

43 Jesus answered, therefore, and said to them, `Murmur not one with another;

44 no one is able to come unto me, if the Father who sent me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day;

45 it is having been written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God; every one therefore who heard from the Father, and learned, cometh to me;

46 not that any one hath seen the Father, except he who is from God, he hath seen the Father.

47 `Verily, verily, I say to you, He who is believing in me, hath life age-during;

48 I am the bread of the life;

49 your fathers did eat the manna in the wilderness, and they died;

50 this is the bread that out of the heaven is coming down, that any one may eat of it, and not die.

51 `I am the living bread that came down out of the heaven; if any one may eat of this bread he shall live -- to the age; and the bread also that I will give is my flesh, that I will give for the life of the world.'

52 The Jews, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, `How is this one able to give us [his] flesh to eat?'

53 Jesus, therefore, said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, If ye may not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and may not drink his blood, ye have no life in yourselves;

54 he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, hath life age-during, and I will raise him up in the last day;

55 for my flesh truly is food, and my blood truly is drink;

56 he who is eating my flesh, and is drinking my blood, doth remain in me, and I in him.

57 `According as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, he also who is eating me, even that one shall live because of me;

58 this is the bread that came down out of the heaven; not as your fathers did eat the manna, and died; he who is eating this bread shall live -- to the age.'

59 These things he said in a synagogue, teaching in Capernaum;

60 many, therefore, of his disciples having heard, said, `This word is hard; who is able to hear it?'

61 And Jesus having known in himself that his disciples are murmuring about this, said to them, `Doth this stumble you?

62 if then ye may behold the Son of Man going up where he was before?

63 the spirit it is that is giving life; the flesh doth not profit anything; the sayings that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life;

64 but there are certain of you who do not believe;' for Jesus had known from the beginning who they are who are not believing, and who is he who will deliver him up,

65 and he said, `Because of this I have said to you -- No one is able to come unto me, if it may not have been given him from my Father.'

66 From this [time] many of his disciples went away backward, and were no more walking with him,

67 Jesus, therefore, said to the twelve, `Do ye also wish to go away?'

68 Simon Peter, therefore, answered him, `Sir, unto whom shall we go? thou hast sayings of life age-during;

69 and we have believed, and we have known, that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
