² This man came to Jesus^{[a] (A)}by night and said to him, ^(B)“Rabbi, ^(C)we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do ^(D)unless God is with him.”

³⁸ how ^(A)God anointed Jesus of Nazareth ^(B)with the Holy Spirit and with ^(C)power. He went about doing good and healing all ^(D)who were oppressed by the devil, ^(E)for God was with him.

³⁶ But ^(A)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For ^(B)the works that the Father has given me ^(C)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, ^(D)bear witness about me that ^(E)the Father has sent me.

²² “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, ^(A)a man attested to you by God ^(B)with ^(C)mighty works and wonders and signs that ^(D)God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—

¹⁶ saying, ^(A)“What shall we do with these men? For that ^(B)a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. ¹⁷ But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them ^(C)to speak no more to anyone in this name.”

³⁰ The man answered, “Why, this is ^(A)an amazing thing! ^(B)You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. ³¹ We know that ^(C)God does not listen to sinners, but ^(D)if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. ³² Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. ^33 (E)If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not ^(A)from God, ^(B)for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, ^(C)“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And ^(D)there was a division among them.

⁴⁷ So the chief priests and the Pharisees ^(A)gathered ^(B)the council and said, ^(C)“What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and ^(D)the Romans will come and take away both our ^(E)place and our nation.”

¹⁶ And they sent ^(A)their disciples to him, along with ^(B)the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, ^(C)we know that you are true and teach ^(D)the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for ^(E)you are not swayed by appearances.^[a]
