Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and (A)flogged him. 2 (B)And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that (C)I find no guilt in him.” 5 So Jesus came out, wearing (D)the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, (E)“Behold the man!” 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, (F)“Take him yourselves and crucify him, for (G)I find no guilt in him.” 7 The Jews[a] answered him, “We have a law, and (H)according to that law he ought to die because (I)he has made himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this statement, (J)he was even more afraid. 9 (K)He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, (L)“Where are you from?” But (M)Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, (N)“You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore (O)he who delivered me over to you (P)has the greater sin.”

12 From then on (Q)Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. (R)Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on (S)the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[b] Gabbatha. 14 Now it was (T)the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[c] He said to the Jews, (U)“Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, (V)“Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 (W)So he (X)delivered him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, 17 and (Y)he went out, (Z)bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 (AA)There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate (AB)also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for (AC)the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, (AD)“What I have written I have written.”

23 (AE)When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.[d] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” (AF)This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

(AG)“They divided my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.”

So the soldiers did these things, 25 (AH)but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and (AI)the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, (AJ)“Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to (AK)his own home.

The Death of Jesus

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now (AL)finished, said ((AM)to fulfill the Scripture), (AN)“I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, (AO)so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, (AP)“It is finished,” and he bowed his head and (AQ)gave up his spirit.

Jesus' Side Is Pierced

31 Since it was (AR)the day of Preparation, and (AS)so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was (AT)a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other (AU)who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out (AV)blood and water. 35 (AW)He who saw it has borne witness—(AX)his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—(AY)that you also may believe. 36 (AZ)For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: (BA)“Not one of his bones (BB)will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, (BC)“They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 (BD)After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly (BE)for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 (BF)Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus[e] by night, came (BG)bringing a mixture of (BH)myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds[f] in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and (BI)bound it in (BJ)linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a (BK)garden, and (BL)in the garden a new tomb (BM)in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish (BN)day of Preparation, (BO)since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Pilatus dömer Jesus till döden

19 Pilatus gav då order om att Jesus skulle piskas. 2 Soldaterna vred till en krona av törnen och satte den på hans huvud och klädde på honom en purpurröd[a] mantel. 3 Sedan gick de fram till honom och sa: ”Leve judarnas kung!” och slog honom i ansiktet.

4 Efteråt gick Pilatus ut igen och sa till folket: ”Nu för jag ut honom till er, så att ni ska förstå att jag inte finner honom skyldig till något.” 5 Så kom Jesus ut med törnekronan och den purpurröda manteln på sig, och Pilatus sa: ”Här är mannen!”

6 Men när översteprästerna och deras tempelvakter fick se honom, började de ropa: ”Korsfäst honom!”

Då sa Pilatus: ”Ni får ta honom och korsfästa honom själva. Jag finner honom inte skyldig till något.” 7 Men judarna svarade: ”Enligt vår lag[b] måste han dö, för han har gjort sig till Guds Son.”

8 När Pilatus hörde detta blev han ännu mer rädd. 9 Han gick in i residenset igen och frågade Jesus: ”Varifrån kommer du?” Men Jesus svarade honom inte.

10 ”Tänker du inte svara mig?” frågade Pilatus. ”Vet du inte att jag har makt både att ge dig fri och att låta dig korsfästas?”

11 Men Jesus sa: ”Du skulle inte ha någon makt över mig alls om du inte hade fått den från ovan. Därför har den som överlämnade mig åt dig gjort sig skyldig till en större synd.”

12 Då försökte Pilatus hitta ett sätt att kunna frige Jesus men judarna ropade: ”Om du friger honom är du inte kejsarens vän! Den som gör sig till kung sätter sig upp mot kejsaren.”

13 När Pilatus hörde vad de sa, förde han ut Jesus till dem igen och satte sig på domstolen på den plats som kallas Stengården (på hebreiska[c] ”Gabbata”). 14 Det var nu mitt på dagen[d], förberedelsedagen innan påskhögtiden. Pilatus sa till judarna: ”Här har ni er kung!”

15 Men de skrek: ”Bort med honom! Korsfäst honom!”

Då frågade Pilatus: ”Ska jag korsfästa er kung?”

Men översteprästerna svarade: ”Vi har ingen annan kung än kejsaren.”

16 Då gav Pilatus efter och överlämnade Jesus till att korsfästas.

Jesus korsfästs

(Matt 27:33-44; Mark 15:24-32; Luk 23:33-43)

Soldaterna tog honom alltså med sig 17 och Jesus bar själv sitt kors till den plats som kallas Skalleplatsen (på hebreiska Golgota).

18 Där korsfäste de honom och två andra män på var sitt kors med Jesus i mitten. 19 Pilatus hade låtit skriva en skylt som sattes upp på korset och där stod det: Jesus från Nasaret, judarnas kung. 20 Texten var skriven på hebreiska, latin och grekiska och eftersom platsen där Jesus korsfästes låg nära staden var det många judar som läste den.

21 Judarnas överstepräster gick då till Pilatus och krävde: ”Ändra texten från ’Judarnas kung’ till vad han själv har sagt: ’Jag är judarnas kung.’ ”

22 Men Pilatus svarade: ”Vad jag har skrivit, det har jag skrivit.”

23 När soldaterna hade korsfäst Jesus, tog de hans kläder och delade upp dem i fyra delar, en för var och en av dem. Men när de kom till skjortan som var vävd i ett enda stycke utan söm, 24 sa de: ”Vi bör inte skära sönder den. Vi kastar lott om vem som ska få den.” Så gick det i uppfyllelse som står skrivet:

”De delade mina kläder mellan sig
    och kastade lott om min klädnad.”[e]

Det var vad soldaterna gjorde.

25 Intill Jesus kors stod hans mor, hans moster, Klopas hustru Maria och Maria från Magdala. 26 När Jesus såg sin mor och bredvid henne den lärjunge som han älskade,[f] sa han till henne: ”Kvinna, låt honom vara din son!” 27 Sedan sa han till sin lärjunge: ”Låt henne vara din mor!” Från den stunden lät lärjungen henne bo hemma hos sig.

Jesus dör på korset

(Matt 27:48-50; Mark 15:36-37; Luk 23:36)

28 Jesus visste nu att allt var fullbordat och för att det som står skrivet skulle uppfyllas, sa han: ”Jag är törstig!”[g] 29 Någon doppade då en svamp i en kruka fylld med surt vin som stod där och fäste den på en isopstjälk[h] och förde den till hans mun.[i] 30 Och när Jesus hade fått vinet, sa han: ”Det är fullbordat!” Sedan böjde han ner huvudet och gav upp andan.

31 Judarna ville inte att kropparna skulle hänga kvar på korsen till nästa dag som var en sabbat och dessutom en speciell sådan. De bad därför Pilatus ge order om att man skulle slå sönder benen på de korsfästa och ta ner kropparna.[j] 32 Soldaterna kom då och slog sönder benen på de båda män som hade korsfästs samtidigt som Jesus, först den ena mannens ben och sedan den andres. 33 Men när de kom fram till Jesus, såg de att han redan var död och därför slog de inte sönder hans ben. 34 En av soldaterna stack upp ett spjut i hans sida och då rann det ut blod och vatten. 35 Det finns en som kan vittna om detta[k] och hans vittnesbörd är sant. Han vet att det han säger är sant och han vittnar för att ni ska tro.

36 Detta hände för att Skriften skulle gå i uppfyllelse: ”Inget av hans ben ska krossas.”[l] 37 På ett annat ställe står det: ”De ska se upp till honom som de har genomborrat”[m].

Jesus begravs

(Matt 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luk 23:50-56)

38 Josef från Arimataia som av rädsla för judarna var en hemlig lärjunge till Jesus, bad sedan Pilatus att få ta Jesus kropp. Pilatus lät honom få det och Josef gick då och tog kroppen. 39 Nikodemos, mannen som först hade kommit till Jesus på natten var också med. Han hade med sig en blandning av myrra och aloe som vägde omkring trettio kilo. 40 De båda männen lindade sedan in Jesus kropp i en svepning av linne tillsammans med de välluktande oljorna så som man brukade göra vid judiska begravningar. 41 Platsen där Jesus korsfästes låg nära en trädgård där det fanns en ny grav där ännu ingen hade blivit lagd. 42 Eftersom det var förberedelsedag[n] och graven låg nära, lade man Jesus i den.

Jesus Is Buried

Jesus Sentenced to Be Crucified(A)

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.(B) 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”(C) And they slapped him in the face.(D)

4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out(E) to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”(F) 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe,(G) Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!”

But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him.(H) As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”(I)

7 The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die,(J) because he claimed to be the Son of God.”(K)

8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and he went back inside the palace.(L) “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.(M) 10 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.(N) Therefore the one who handed me over to you(O) is guilty of a greater sin.”

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king(P) opposes Caesar.”

13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat(Q) at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic(R) is Gabbatha). 14 It was the day of Preparation(S) of the Passover; it was about noon.(T)

“Here is your king,”(U) Pilate said to the Jews.

15 But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked.

“We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.

16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.(V)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(W)

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross,(X) he went out to the place of the Skull(Y) (which in Aramaic(Z) is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others(AA)—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: jesus of nazareth,(AB) the king of the jews.(AC) 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city,(AD) and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. 21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”(AE)

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

24 “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled(AF) that said,

“They divided my clothes among them
    and cast lots for my garment.”[a](AG)

So this is what the soldiers did.

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished,(AN) and so that Scripture would be fulfilled,(AO) Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar(AP) was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.”(AQ) With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

31 Now it was the day of Preparation,(AR) and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses(AS) during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.(AT) 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced(AU) Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.(AV) 35 The man who saw it(AW) has given testimony, and his testimony is true.(AX) He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled:(AY) “Not one of his bones will be broken,”[c](AZ) 37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d](BA)

The Burial of Jesus(BB)

38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.(BC) With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus,(BD) the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[e] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.(BE) This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.(BF) 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation(BG) and since the tomb was nearby,(BH) they laid Jesus there.
