John 13
Worldwide English (New Testament)
13 Before the Passover Feast had started, Jesus saw that the time had come for him to leave this world. The time had come for him to go back to his Father. He loved his own people who were in the world. And he loved them the same way right to the end.
2 He and his disciples were eating together. The devil had already put it into Judas' heart to give Jesus over to people who hated him. (Judas was the son of Simon Iscariot.)
3 Jesus knew that his Father had put everything into his hands. He knew he had come from God. He knew he was going back to God.
4 Jesus stood up where he had been eating. He took off his outer clothing. And he took a towel and tied it around him.
5 Then he poured water into a pan and began to wash the disciples' feet. He wiped their feet with the towel he had tied around him.
6 He came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, `Lord, are you going to wash my feet?'
7 Jesus answered him, `You do not understand now what I am doing, but you will understand it later.'
8 Peter said to him, `You will never wash my feet!' Jesus answered him, `If I do not wash you, then you do not belong to me.'
9 Simon Peter said to him, `Lord, wash my feet, and my hands, and my head also!'
10 Jesus said, `A person who has bathed himself needs to wash his feet only. He is all clean. You are clean, but not all of you.'
11 Jesus knew who was going to give him over to people who hated him. That is why he said, `You are not all clean.'
12 After Jesus had finished washing their feet, he took his gown and sat down again. `Do you understand what I have done to you?' he asked.
13 `You call me Master and Lord. What you say is right. I am your Master and Lord.
14 I am your Lord and Master and have washed your feet. If I do that, then you should wash one another's feet.
15 I have shown you what to do. Now you do as I have done.
16 I tell you the truth. The servant is not better than his master. The one who is sent is not better than the one who sent him.
17 Do you understand what I have told you? If you do, you will have much happiness for doing it.
18 I am not talking about all of you but I know the people I have chosen. So God's word comes true. The holy writings say, "He who is eating my bread has turned against me."
19 `I am telling you this now before it happens. So when it happens you will believe who I am.
20 I tell you the truth. The person who receives the one I send, receives me. He that receives me, receives the one who sent me.'
21 When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his heart. He said, `I tell you the truth. One of you will give me over to people who hate me.'
22 The disciples looked at one another. They did not know which one of them Jesus was talking about.
23 The disciple Jesus loved was at his right side.
24 Simon Peter nodded to that disciple. He said, `Tell us who he is talking about.'
25 He who was at Jesus' right side said to Jesus, `Lord, who is it?'
26 Jesus answered, `I will put a piece of bread in the dish. Then I will give it to that one.' He put in the bread, then he took it and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27 Right after Jesus had given the bread, Satan came into Judas. Then Jesus said to him, `What you are going to do, do right away.'
28 No one at the table knew why Jesus said, `Do it right away.'
29 Judas had the money bag. Some thought that Jesus was telling him, `Buy what we need for the feast,' or that he wanted Judas to give something to the poor people.
30 Judas went out right after he had taken the bread. It was night.
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, `Now the Son of Man is very great. And he has made God's name great.
32 If he has made God's name great, God also will make him great by his own power. He will do it right away.
33 My children, I am with you for a short time longer. You will look for me. What I said to the Jews I say to you now: "You cannot come to the place where I am going."
34 I give you a new law. That law is, "Love each other." As I have loved you, so you also love each other.
35 This is how all people will know that you are my disciples.'
36 Simon Peter said to him, `Lord, where are you going?' Jesus answered him, `You cannot go with me where I am going now. Later on you will go with me.'
37 Peter said to him, `Lord, why can I not go with you now? I am willing to die for you.'
38 Jesus answered him, `Will you die for me? I tell you the truth. Before the cock calls, you will say three times that you do not know me.'

The Lord’s Supper
13 Now before the Feast of (A)the Passover, Jesus knowing that (B)His hour had come that He would depart out of this world (C)to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them [a]to the end. 2 And during supper, (D)the devil having already put into the heart of (E)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, (F)knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that (G)He had come forth from God and was going back to God, 4 *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He (H)tied it around Himself.
Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
5 Then He *poured water into the washbasin, and began to (I)wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel which He had tied around Himself. 6 So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not realize now, but you will understand (J)afterwards.” 8 Peter *said to Him, “You will never wash my feet—ever!” Jesus answered him, “(K)If I do not wash you, (L)you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and (M)you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For (N)He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12 So when He had washed their feet, and (O)taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me (P)Teacher and (Q)Lord; and [b]you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, (R)the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I gave you (S)an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, (T)a slave is not greater than his master, nor is (U)one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, you are (V)blessed if you do them. 18 (W)I do not speak about all of you. I know the ones I have (X)chosen; but (Y)that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘(Z)He who eats My bread has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19 From now on (AA)I am telling you before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe that (AB)I am He. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (AC)he who receives anyone I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
21 When Jesus had said these things, He (AD)became troubled in spirit, and bore witness and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that (AE)one of you will [c]betray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, (AF)perplexed about whom He *spoke. 23 There was reclining on (AG)Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, (AH)whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter *gestured to him to inquire, “Who is the one of whom He is speaking?” 25 He, (AI)leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus *answered, “He is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the piece of bread, He *took and *gave it to Judas, (AJ)the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 And after the piece of bread, (AK)Satan then (AL)entered into him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were thinking, because Judas (AM)had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of (AN)for the feast”; or else, that he should (AO)give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And (AP)it was night.
31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, “Now [d]is (AQ)the Son of Man (AR)glorified, and (AS)God [e]is glorified in Him; 32 [f]if God is glorified in Him, (AT)God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33 (AU)Little children, I am with you (AV)a little while longer. (AW)You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34 A (AX)new commandment I give to you, (AY)that you love one another, (AZ)even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (BA)By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “(BB)Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but (BC)you will follow later.” 37 Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? (BD)I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus *answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, (BE)a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

New King James Version
Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
13 Now (A)before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (B)His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He (C)loved them to the end.
2 And [a]supper being ended, (D)the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing (E)that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He (F)had come from God and (G)was going to God, 4 (H)rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, (I)“Lord, are You washing my feet?”
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you (J)do not understand now, (K)but you will know after this.”
8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”
Jesus answered him, (L)“If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and (M)you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For (N)He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”
12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you [b]know what I have done to you? 13 (O)You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 (P)If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (Q)you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For (R)I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 (S)Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 (T)If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Jesus Identifies His Betrayer(U)
18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the (V)Scripture may be fulfilled, (W)‘He who eats [c]bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19 (X)Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 20 (Y)Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
21 (Z)When Jesus had said these things, (AA)He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, (AB)one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.
23 Now (AC)there was [d]leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.
25 Then, leaning [e]back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to (AD)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 (AE)Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because (AF)Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.
The New Commandment
31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, (AG)“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and (AH)God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and (AI)glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a (AJ)little while longer. You will seek Me; (AK)and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 (AL)A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 (AM)By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”
Jesus answered him, “Where I (AN)am going you cannot follow Me now, but (AO)you shall follow Me afterward.”
37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will (AP)lay down my life for Your sake.”
38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not (AQ)crow till you have denied Me three times.
