John 12:32-13:18

³² And I, ^(A)when I am lifted up from the earth, ^(B)will draw ^(C)all people to myself.” ³³ He said this ^(D)to show by what kind of death he was going to die. ³⁴ So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that ^(E)the Christ remains forever. How can you say that ^(F)the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” ³⁵ So Jesus said to them, ^(G)“The light is among you ^(H)for a little while longer. ^(I)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness ^(J)overtake you. ^(K)The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. ³⁶ While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become ^(L)sons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. ³⁷ Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, ^38 (M)so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

³⁹ Therefore they ^(O)could not believe. For again Isaiah said,

⁴¹ Isaiah said these things because ^(R)he saw his glory and ^(S)spoke of him. ⁴² Nevertheless, ^(T)many even of the authorities believed in him, but ^(U)for fear of the Pharisees they did not ^(V)confess it, so that they would not be ^(W)put out of the synagogue; ^43 (X)for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

⁴⁴ And Jesus cried out and said, ^(Y)“Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but ^(Z)in him who sent me. ⁴⁵ And ^(AA)whoever ^(AB)sees me sees him who sent me. ^46 (AC)I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. ⁴⁷ If anyone ^(AD)hears my words and does not keep them, ^(AE)I do not judge him; for ^(AF)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. ^48 (AG)The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; ^(AH)the word that I have spoken will judge him ^(AI)on the last day. ⁴⁹ For ^(AJ)I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father ^(AK)who sent me has himself given me ^(AL)a commandment—what to say and what to speak. ⁵⁰ And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 Now ^(AM)before ^(AN)the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that ^(AO)his hour had come ^(AP)to depart out of this world to the Father, ^(AQ)having loved ^(AR)his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. ² During supper, when ^(AS)the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, ³ Jesus, knowing ^(AT)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that ^(AU)he had come from God and ^(AV)was going back to God, ⁴ rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, ^(AW)tied it around his waist. ⁵ Then he ^(AX)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. ⁶ He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” ^7 (AY)Jesus answered him, “What I am doing ^(AZ)you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” ^8 (BA)Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, ^(BB)“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” ⁹ Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” ¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, ^(BC)except for his feet,^[a] but is completely clean. And ^(BD)you^[b] are clean, ^(BE)but not every one of you.” ^11 (BF)For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

¹² When he had washed their feet and ^(BG)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ^(BH)“Do you understand what I have done to you? ^13 (BI)You call me ^(BJ)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. ¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, ^(BK)you also ought to wash one another's feet. ¹⁵ For I have given you an example, ^(BL)that you also should do just as I have done to you. ¹⁶ Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(BM)a servant^[c] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. ¹⁷ If you know these things, ^(BN)blessed are you if you do them. ^18 (BO)I am not speaking of all of you; I know ^(BP)whom I have chosen. But ^(BQ)the Scripture will be fulfilled,^{[d] (BR)}‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
