The Hatred of the World

18 (A)“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 (B)If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because (C)you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: (D)‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, (E)they will also persecute you. (F)If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But (G)all these things they will do to you (H)on account of my name, (I)because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, (J)they would not have been guilty of sin,[a] but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 (K)Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 (L)If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, (M)they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have (N)seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But (O)the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: (P)‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But (Q)when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, (R)he will bear witness about me. 27 And (S)you also will bear witness, (T)because you have been with me (U)from the beginning.

16 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. (V)They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, (W)the hour is coming when (X)whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things (Y)because they have not known the Father, nor me. But (Z)I have said these things to you, that when (AA)their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, (AB)because I was with you. But now (AC)I am going to him who sent me, and (AD)none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, (AE)sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for (AF)if I do not go away, (AG)the Helper will not come to you. But (AH)if (AI)I go, (AJ)I will send him to you. (AK)And when he comes, he will (AL)convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, (AM)because they do not believe in me; 10 (AN)concerning righteousness, (AO)because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 (AP)concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world (AQ)is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When (AR)the Spirit of truth comes, (AS)he will (AT)guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but (AU)whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will (AV)glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 (AW)All that the Father has is mine; (AX)therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 (AY)“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and (AZ)again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So (BA)some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, (BB)‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, (BC)‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? (BD)We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 (BE)Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, (BF)you will weep and lament, but (BG)the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but (BH)your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 (BI)When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 (BJ)So also you have sorrow now, but (BK)I will see you again, and (BL)your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 (BM)In that day you will (BN)ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, (BO)whatever you ask of the Father in my name, (BP)he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. (BQ)Ask, and you will receive, (BR)that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. (BS)The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 (BT)for the Father himself loves you, because (BU)you have loved me and (BV)have believed that I came from God.[b] 28 (BW)I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now (BX)I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not (BY)using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that (BZ)you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that (CA)you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, (CB)the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when (CC)you will be scattered, each to his own home, and (CD)will leave me alone. (CE)Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that (CF)in me you may have peace. (CG)In the world you will have (CH)tribulation. But (CI)take heart; (CJ)I have overcome the world.”

The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, (CK)he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, (CL)the hour has come; (CM)glorify your Son that the Son may (CN)glorify you, since (CO)you have given him authority over all flesh, (CP)to give eternal life to all (CQ)whom you have given him. (CR)And this is eternal life, (CS)that they know you, (CT)the only (CU)true God, and (CV)Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I (CW)glorified you on earth, (CX)having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, (CY)glorify me in your own presence with the glory (CZ)that I had with you (DA)before the world existed.

(DB)“I have manifested your name to the people (DC)whom you gave me out of the world. (DD)Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything (DE)that you have given me is from you. For I have given them (DF)the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that (DG)I came from you; and (DH)they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. (DI)I am not praying for the world but for those (DJ)whom you have given me, for (DK)they are yours. 10 (DL)All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and (DM)I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but (DN)they are in the world, and (DO)I am coming to you. (DP)Holy Father, (DQ)keep them in your name, (DR)which you have given me, (DS)that they may be one, (DT)even as we are one. 12 (DU)While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have (DV)guarded them, and (DW)not one of them has been lost except (DX)the son of destruction, (DY)that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now (DZ)I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have (EA)my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 (EB)I have given them your word, and (EC)the world has hated them (ED)because they are not of the world, (EE)just as I am not of the world. 15 I (EF)do not ask that you (EG)take them out of the world, but that you (EH)keep them from (EI)the evil one.[c] 16 (EJ)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 (EK)Sanctify them[d] in the truth; (EL)your word is truth. 18 (EM)As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And (EN)for their sake (EO)I consecrate myself,[e] that they also (EP)may be sanctified[f] in truth.

20 “I do not (EQ)ask for these only, but also for those (ER)who will believe in me through their word, 21 (ES)that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that (ET)they also may be in (EU)us, so that the world (EV)may believe that you have sent me. 22 (EW)The glory that you have given me (EX)I have given to them, (EY)that they may be one even as we are one, 23 (EZ)I in them and you in me, (FA)that they may become perfectly one, (FB)so that the world may know that you sent me and (FC)loved them even as (FD)you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be (FE)with me (FF)where I am, (FG)to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me (FH)before the foundation of the world. 25 (FI)O righteous Father, even though (FJ)the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 (FK)I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love (FL)with which you have loved me may be in them, and (FM)I in them.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, (FN)he went out with his disciples across (FO)the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew (FP)the place, for (FQ)Jesus often met there with his disciples. (FR)So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Then Jesus, (FS)knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, (FT)“Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”[g] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. (FU)When Jesus[h] said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. So he asked them again, (FV)“Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” (FW)This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” 10 Then Simon Peter, (FX)having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant[i] and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; (FY)shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

Jesus Faces Annas and Caiaphas

12 So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews[j] arrested Jesus and bound him. 13 First they (FZ)led him to (GA)Annas, for he was the father-in-law of (GB)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews (GC)that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.

Peter Denies Jesus

15 (GD)Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 (GE)but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 (GF)The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants[k] and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. (GG)Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

The World Hates the Disciples

18 “If the world hates you,(A) keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you(B) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.(C) 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’[a](D) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.(E) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name,(F) for they do not know the one who sent me.(G) 22 If I had not come and spoken to them,(H) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.(I) 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did,(J) they would not be guilty of sin.(K) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:(L) ‘They hated me without reason.’[b](M)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

26 “When the Advocate(N) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father(O)—the Spirit of truth(P) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.(Q) 27 And you also must testify,(R) for you have been with me from the beginning.(S)

16 “All this(T) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(U) They will put you out of the synagogue;(V) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(W) They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(X) I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(Y) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(Z) but now I am going to him who sent me.(AA) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’(AB) Rather, you are filled with grief(AC) because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(AD) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(AE) When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin,(AF) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(AG) because I am going to the Father,(AH) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(AI) now stands condemned.

12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(AJ) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(AK) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(AL) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(AM) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while(AN) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”(AO)

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’(AP) and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”(AQ) 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(AR) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(AS) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(AT) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(AU) but I will see you again(AV) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(AW) 23 In that day(AX) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(AY) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(AZ) and your joy will be complete.(BA)

25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively,(BB) a time is coming(BC) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(BD) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(BE) and have believed that I came from God.(BF) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(BG)

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(BH) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(BI) that you came from God.”(BJ)

31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming(BK) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(BL) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(BM) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(BN)

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(BO) In this world you will have trouble.(BP) But take heart! I have overcome(BQ) the world.”

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(BR) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.(BS) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(BT) For you granted him authority over all people(BU) that he might give eternal life(BV) to all those you have given him.(BW) Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(BX) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(BY) I have brought you glory(BZ) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(CA) And now, Father, glorify me(CB) in your presence with the glory I had with you(CC) before the world began.(CD)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

“I have revealed you[c](CE) to those whom you gave me(CF) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me(CG) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,(CH) and they believed that you sent me.(CI) I pray for them.(CJ) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,(CK) for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.(CL) And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,(CM) and I am coming to you.(CN) Holy Father, protect them by the power of[d] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one(CO) as we are one.(CP) 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[e] that name you gave me. None has been lost(CQ) except the one doomed to destruction(CR) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.(CS)

13 “I am coming to you now,(CT) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy(CU) within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,(CV) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.(CW) 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(CX) 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.(CY) 17 Sanctify them by[f] the truth; your word is truth.(CZ) 18 As you sent me into the world,(DA) I have sent them into the world.(DB) 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.(DC)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,(DD) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.(DE) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.(DF) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me,(DG) that they may be one as we are one(DH) 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me(DI) and have loved them(DJ) even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me(DK) to be with me where I am,(DL) and to see my glory,(DM) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.(DN)

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,(DO) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.(DP) 26 I have made you[g] known to them,(DQ) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them(DR) and that I myself may be in them.”

Jesus Arrested(DS)

18 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.(DT) On the other side there was a garden,(DU) and he and his disciples went into it.(DV)

Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.(DW) So Judas came to the garden, guiding(DX) a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.(DY) They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,(DZ) went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”(EA)

“Jesus of Nazareth,”(EB) they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”(EC)

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”[h](ED)

10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup(EE) the Father has given me?”

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(EF) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(EG) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(EH)

Peter’s First Denial(EI)

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(EJ) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(EK) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”(EL)

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(EM) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(EN)
