32 And I, (A)when I am lifted up from the earth, (B)will draw (C)all people to myself.” 33 He said this (D)to show by what kind of death he was going to die. 34 So the crowd answered him, “We have heard from the Law that (E)the Christ remains forever. How can you say that (F)the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, (G)“The light is among you (H)for a little while longer. (I)Walk while you have the light, lest darkness (J)overtake you. (K)The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become (L)sons of light.”

The Unbelief of the People

When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them. 37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 (M)so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

(N)“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they (O)could not believe. For again Isaiah said,

40 (P)“He has blinded their eyes
    and (Q)hardened their heart,
lest they see with their eyes,
and understand with their heart, and turn,
    and I would heal them.”

41 Isaiah said these things because (R)he saw his glory and (S)spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, (T)many even of the authorities believed in him, but (U)for fear of the Pharisees they did not (V)confess it, so that they would not be (W)put out of the synagogue; 43 (X)for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Jesus Came to Save the World

44 And Jesus cried out and said, (Y)“Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but (Z)in him who sent me. 45 And (AA)whoever (AB)sees me sees him who sent me. 46 (AC)I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone (AD)hears my words and does not keep them, (AE)I do not judge him; for (AF)I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 (AG)The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; (AH)the word that I have spoken will judge him (AI)on the last day. 49 For (AJ)I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father (AK)who sent me has himself given me (AL)a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

13 Now (AM)before (AN)the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that (AO)his hour had come (AP)to depart out of this world to the Father, (AQ)having loved (AR)his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when (AS)the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing (AT)that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that (AU)he had come from God and (AV)was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, (AW)tied it around his waist. Then he (AX)poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” (AY)Jesus answered him, “What I am doing (AZ)you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” (BA)Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, (BB)“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, (BC)except for his feet,[a] but is completely clean. And (BD)you[b] are clean, (BE)but not every one of you.” 11 (BF)For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and (BG)put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, (BH)“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 (BI)You call me (BJ)Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (BK)you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, (BL)that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, (BM)a servant[c] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, (BN)blessed are you if you do them. 18 (BO)I am not speaking of all of you; I know (BP)whom I have chosen. But (BQ)the Scripture will be fulfilled,[d] (BR)‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’

32 And I, when I am lifted up[a] from the earth,(A) will draw all people to myself.”(B) 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.(C)

34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(D) that the Messiah will remain forever,(E) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(F) must be lifted up’?(G) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(H) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(I) before darkness overtakes you.(J) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(K) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(L)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(M) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”[b](N)

39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

40 “He has blinded their eyes
    and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
    nor understand with their hearts,
    nor turn—and I would heal them.”[c](O)

41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(P) and spoke about him.(Q)

42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(R) But because of the Pharisees(S) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(T) 43 for they loved human praise(U) more than praise from God.(V)

44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(W) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(X) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(Y) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(Z) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(AA) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(AB) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(AC) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(AD)

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

13 It was just before the Passover Festival.(AE) Jesus knew that the hour had come(AF) for him to leave this world and go to the Father.(AG) Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.(AH) Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power,(AI) and that he had come from God(AJ) and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.(AK) After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet,(AL) drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”(AM)

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean,(AN) though not every one of you.”(AO) 11 For he knew who was going to betray him,(AP) and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’(AQ) and ‘Lord,’(AR) and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.(AS) 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.(AT) 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master,(AU) nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.(AV)

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

18 “I am not referring to all of you;(AW) I know those I have chosen.(AX) But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture:(AY) ‘He who shared my bread(AZ) has turned[d](BA) against me.’[e](BB)
