14 You have made people like the fish of the sea,
like crawling things that have no ruler.(A)
15 He brings all of them up with a hook;
he drags them out with his net;
he gathers them in his seine,
so he rejoices and exults.(B)
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net
and makes offerings to his seine,
for by them his portion is lavish,
and his food is rich.
17 Is he then to keep on emptying his net
and destroying nations without mercy?(C)

Jeremiah Complains to God
12 You will be in the right, O Lord,
when I lay charges against you,
but let me put my case to you.
Why does the way of the guilty prosper?
Why do all who are treacherous thrive?(A)
2 You plant them, and they take root;
they grow and bring forth fruit;
you are near in their mouths
yet far from their hearts.(B)

Why do all the faithless live at ease?

Daniel 7:7-28
New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
7 After this I saw in the visions by night a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth and was devouring, breaking in pieces, and stamping what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that preceded it, and it had ten horns.(A) 8 I was considering the horns when another horn appeared, a little one that came up among them. Three of the original horns were plucked up from before it. There were eyes like human eyes in this horn and a mouth speaking arrogantly.(B)
Judgment before the Ancient One
9 As I watched,
thrones were set in place,
and an Ancient One[a] took his throne;
his clothing was white as snow
and the hair of his head like pure wool;
his throne was fiery flames,
and its wheels were burning fire.(C)
10 A stream of fire issued
and flowed out from his presence.
A thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him.
The court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.(D)
11 I watched then because of the noise of the arrogant words that the horn was speaking. And as I watched, the beast was put to death and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire.(E) 12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. 13 As I watched in the night visions,
I saw one like a human being[b]
coming with the clouds of heaven.
And he came to the Ancient One[c]
and was presented before him.(F)
14 To him was given dominion
and glory and kingship,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not pass away,
and his kingship is one
that shall never be destroyed.(G)
Daniel’s Visions Interpreted
15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me,[d] and the visions of my head terrified me.(H) 16 I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter:(I) 17 “As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever—forever and ever.”(J)
19 Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was different from all the rest, exceedingly terrifying, with its teeth of iron and claws of bronze, and which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet; 20 and concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and concerning the other horn that came up and before which three others had fallen—the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke arrogantly and that seemed greater than the others. 21 As I looked, that horn made war with the holy ones and was prevailing over them,(K) 22 until the Ancient One[e] came; then judgment was given for the holy ones of the Most High, and the time arrived when the holy ones gained possession of the kingdom.(L)
23 This is what he said: “As for the fourth beast,
there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth
that shall be different from all the other kingdoms;
it shall devour the whole earth
and trample it down and break it to pieces.(M)
24 As for the ten horns,
out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise,
and another shall arise after them.
This one shall be different from the former ones
and shall put down three kings.(N)
25 He shall speak words against the Most High,
shall wear out the holy ones of the Most High,
and shall attempt to change the ritual calendar and the law,
and they shall be given into his power
for a time, two times,[f] and half a time.(O)
26 Then the court shall sit in judgment,
and his dominion shall be taken away,
to be consumed and totally destroyed.(P)
27 The kingship and dominion
and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
shall be given to the people of the holy ones of the Most High;
their kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom,
and all dominions shall serve and obey them.”(Q)
28 Here the account ends. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts greatly terrified me, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter in my mind.(R)

7 “After that, in my vision(A) at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron(B) teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled(C) underfoot whatever was left.(D) It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.(E)
8 “While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little(F) one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a human being(G) and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(H)
9 “As I looked,
“thrones were set in place,
and the Ancient of Days(I) took his seat.(J)
His clothing was as white as snow;(K)
the hair of his head was white like wool.(L)
His throne was flaming with fire,
and its wheels(M) were all ablaze.
10 A river of fire(N) was flowing,
coming out from before him.(O)
Thousands upon thousands attended him;
ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The court was seated,
and the books(P) were opened.
11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking.(Q) I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.(R) 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)
13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[a](S) coming(T) with the clouds of heaven.(U) He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority,(V) glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him.(W) His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom(X) is one that will never be destroyed.(Y)
The Interpretation of the Dream
15 “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.(Z) 16 I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this.
“So he told me and gave me the interpretation(AA) of these things: 17 ‘The four great beasts are four kings that will rise from the earth. 18 But the holy people(AB) of the Most High will receive the kingdom(AC) and will possess it forever—yes, for ever and ever.’(AD)
19 “Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws—the beast that crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. 20 I also wanted to know about the ten horns(AE) on its head and about the other horn that came up, before which three of them fell—the horn that looked more imposing than the others and that had eyes and a mouth that spoke boastfully.(AF) 21 As I watched, this horn was waging war against the holy people and defeating them,(AG) 22 until the Ancient of Days came and pronounced judgment in favor of the holy people of the Most High, and the time came when they possessed the kingdom.(AH)
23 “He gave me this explanation: ‘The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it.(AI) 24 The ten horns(AJ) are ten kings who will come from this kingdom. After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High(AK) and oppress his holy people(AL) and try to change the set times(AM) and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.[b](AN)
26 “‘But the court will sit, and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed(AO) forever. 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms(AP) under heaven will be handed over to the holy people(AQ) of the Most High.(AR) His kingdom will be an everlasting(AS) kingdom, and all rulers will worship(AT) and obey him.’
28 “This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled(AU) by my thoughts,(AV) and my face turned pale,(AW) but I kept the matter to myself.”

18 As for you, O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar kingship, greatness, glory, and majesty.(A) 19 And because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. He killed those he wanted to kill, kept alive those he wanted to keep alive, honored those he wanted to honor, and degraded those he wanted to degrade.(B) 20 But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he acted proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and his glory was stripped from him.(C) 21 He was driven from human society, and his mind was made like that of an animal. His dwelling was with the wild asses, he was fed grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until he learned that the Most High God has sovereignty over the kingdom of mortals and sets over it whomever he will.(D)
