1 Detta är Jesajas, Amos' sons, syner, vad han skådade angående Juda och Jerusalem i Ussias, Jotams, Ahas' och Hiskias, Juda konungars, tid.
2 Hören, I himlar, och lyssna, du jord; ty HERREN talar. Barn har jag uppfött och fostrat, men de hava avfallit från mig.
3 En oxe känner sin ägare och en åsna sin herres krubba, men Israel känner intet, mitt folk förstår intet.
4 Ve dig, du syndiga släkte, du skuldbelastade folk, du ogärningsmäns avföda, I vanartiga barn, som haven övergivit HERREN, föraktat Israels Helige och vikit bort ifrån honom!
5 Var skall man mer slå eder, då I så fortgån i avfällighet? Hela huvudet är ju krankt, och hela hjärtat är sjukt.
6 Ifrån fotbladet ända upp till huvudet finnes intet helt, blott sårmärken och blånader och friska sår, icke utkramade eller förbundna eller lenade med olja.
7 Edert land är en ödemark, edra städer äro uppbrända i eld, edra åkrar bliva i eder åsyn förtärda av främlingar; en ödeläggelse är det, såsom där främlingar hava omstörtat allt.
8 Allenast dottern Sion står kvar där, såsom en hydda i en vingård, såsom ett vaktskjul på ett gurkfält, såsom en inspärrad stad.
9 Om HERREN Sebaot icke hade lämnat en liten återstod kvar åt oss, då vore vi såsom Sodom, vi vore Gomorra lika.
10 Hören HERRENS ord, I Sodomsfurstar, lyssna till vår Guds lag, du Gomorra-folk.
11 Vad skall jag med edra många slaktoffer? säger HERREN. Jag är mätt på brännoffer av vädurar och på gödkalvars fett, och till blod av tjurar och lamm och bockar har jag intet behag.
12 När I kommen för att träda fram inför mitt ansikte, vem begär då av eder det, att mina förgårdar trampas ned?
13 Bären ej vidare fram fåfängliga spisoffer; ångan av dem är en styggelse för mig. Nymånader och sabbater och utlysta fester, ondska i förening med högtidsförsamlingar, sådant kan jag icke lida.
14 Edra nymånader och högtider hatar min själ; de hava blivit mig en börda, jag orkar ej bära den.
15 Ja, huru I än uträcken edra händer, så gömmer jag mina ögon för eder, och om I än mycket bedjen, så hör jag icke därpå. Edra händer äro fulla av blod;
16 tvån eder då, och renen eder. Skaffen edert onda väsende bort ifrån mina ögon. Hören upp att göra, vad ont är.
17 Lären att göra vad gott är, faren efter det rätt är, visen förtryckaren på bättre vägar, skaffen den faderlöse rätt, utfören änkans sak.
18 Kom, låt oss gå till rätta med varandra, säger HERREN. Om edra synder än äro blodröda, så kunna de bliva snövita, och om de äro röda såsom scharlakan, så kunna de bliva såsom vit ull.
19 Om I ären villiga att höra, skolen I få äta av landets goda.
20 Men ären I ovilliga och gensträviga, skolen I förtäras av svärd; ty så har HERRENS mun talat.
21 Huru har hon icke blivit en sköka, den trogna staden! Den var full av rätt, rättfärdighet bodde därinne, men nu bo där mördare.
22 Ditt silver har blivit slagg, ditt ädla vin är utspätt med vatten.
23 Dina styresmän äro upprorsmän och tjuvars stallbröder. Alla älskar de mutor och fara efter vinning. Den faderlöse skaffa de icke rätt, och änkans sak kommer icke inför dem.
24 Därför säger Herren, HERREN Sebaot, den Starke i Israel: Ve! Jag vill släcka min harm på mina ovänner och hämnas på mina fiender.
25 Jag vill vända min hand emot dig och bortrensa ditt slagg såsom med lutsalt och skaffa bort all din oädla malm.
26 Jag vill åter giva dig sådana domare som tillförne, och sådana rådsherrar som du förut ägde. Därefter skall du kallas »rättfärdighetens stad», »en trogen stad».
27 Sion skall genom rätt bliva förlossad och dess omvända genom rättfärdighet.
28 Men fördärv skall drabba alla överträdare och syndare, och de som övergiva HERREN, de skola förgås.
29 Ja, de skola komma på skam med de terebinter som voro eder fröjd; och I skolen få blygas över de lustgårdar som I haden så kära.
30 Ty I skolen bliva såsom en terebint med vissnade löv och varda lika en lustgård utan något vatten.
31 Och de väldige skola varda såsom blår, och deras verk såsom en gnista, och de skola tillsammans brinna, och ingen skall kunna släcka.

Herrens klagan över det trolösa Juda
2 Hör, ni himlar,
lyssna, du jord,
ty Herren talar.
Barn har jag fött upp och fostrat,
men de har gjort uppror mot mig.
3 En oxe känner sin ägare,
en åsna sin herres krubba,
men Israel känner inget,
mitt folk förstår ingenting.
4 Ve dig, du syndiga släkte,
du skuldbelastade folk,
ni ogärningsmäns avkomma,
ni vanartiga barn,
som har övergivit Herren,
föraktat Israels Helige
och vikit bort ifrån honom.
5 Var skall man mer slå er,
då ni fortsätter i trolöshet?
Hela huvudet är sjukt
och hela hjärtat svagt.
6 Från fotbladet upp till huvudet finns inget helt,
bara blåmärken, ärr och öppna sår,
som inte är urkramade eller ombundna eller lindrade med olja.
7 Ert land är en ödemark,
era städer är uppbrända i eld,
era åkrar förtärs i er åsyn av främlingar.
En ödemark är det som efter främlingars framfart.
8 Sions dotter har lämnats kvar
som en hydda i en vingård,
som ett vaktskjul på ett gurkfält,
som en belägrad stad.
9 Om Herren Sebaot inte hade lämnat kvar
en liten återstod åt oss,
då hade vi blivit som Sodom,
vi hade liknat Gomorra.
10 Hör Herrens ord, ni Sodomsfurstar,
lyssna till vår Guds undervisning, du Gomorrafolk!
11 Vad skall jag med era många slaktoffer till?
säger Herren.
Jag är mätt på brännoffer av baggar
och på gödkalvars fett,
till blod av tjurar, lamm och bockar har jag inte behag.
12 När ni kommer för att träda fram inför mitt ansikte,
vem begär då av er att mina förgårdar trampas ner?
13 Bär inte längre fram meningslösa matoffer.
Röken av dem är avskyvärd för mig.
Jag står inte ut med nymånader, sabbater och utlysta fester -
ondska tillsammans med högtidsförsamlingar.
14 Min själ hatar era nymånader och högtider.
De är en börda för mig,
jag är trött på att bära den.
15 När ni räcker ut era händer,
döljer jag mina ögon för er.
Även om ni ber mycket,
kommer jag inte att lyssna.
Era händer är fulla av blod.
16 Tvätta er och gör er rena.
Tag bort era onda gärningar från mina ögon.
Sluta att göra det som är ont.
17 Lär er att göra det som är gott,
sök det rätta.
Tillrättavisa förtryckaren,
försvara den faderlöses rätt,
stöd änkan i hennes sak.
18 Kom, låt oss gå till rätta med varandra, säger Herren.
Om era synder än är blodröda,
skall de bli snövita,
om de än är röda som scharlakan,
skall de bli vita som ull.
19 Om ni är villiga att höra,
skall ni få äta landets goda.
20 Men om ni vägrar och är motsträviga,
skall ni förtäras av svärd,

21 Hur har inte den trogna staden blivit en hora!
Den var full av rätt.
Då bodde rättfärdighet därinne,
men nu mördare.
22 Ditt silver har blivit slagg,
ditt ädla vin är utspätt med vatten.
23 Dina ledare är upprorsmän
och tjuvars kumpaner.
Alla älskar de mutor och jagar efter vinning.
Den faderlöses rätt försvarar de inte,
och änkans sak kommer inte inför dem.
24 Därför säger Herren, Herren Sebaot,
den starke i Israel:
Ve! Jag skall låta mina motståndare drabbas av min vrede
och jag skall hämnas på mina fiender.
25 Jag skall vända min hand mot dig
och rensa bort ditt slagg som med lut
och skaffa bort all din oädla malm.
26 Jag skall åter ge dig sådana domare
som du hade först
och sådana rådgivare som du hade i början.
Därefter skall du kallas "rättfärdighetens stad",
"den trogna staden".
27 Genom rätt skall Sion friköpas,
genom rättfärdighet de som vänder tillbaka.
28 Men fördärv skall drabba
alla överträdare och syndare,
de som överger Herren skall gå under.
29 Ja, ni skall komma på skam
med de terebinter som var er lust,
ni skall få skämmas över de lustgårdar
som ni har utvalt.
30 Ty ni skall bli som en terebint
med vissnade löv,

31 Och den starke skall bli som blånor,

1 This is the vision Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem ·while [L in the days when] Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah [792–686 bc].
God’s Case Against His Children
2 Listen, heavens, and pay attention, earth [L witnesses of the covenant; Deut. 30:19],
because the Lord is speaking:
“I raised ·my children [or sons; C the nation Israel] and ·helped them grow [brought them] up,
but they have ·turned [rebelled] against me.
3 An ox knows its ·master [owner],
and a donkey knows ·where its owner feeds it [L the feeding trough/crib of its owner/master],
but the people of Israel do not know me;
my people do not understand.”
4 ·How terrible [Woe; Alas]! ·Israel is a nation of sin [L Sinful nation!],
a people ·loaded [weighed] down with guilt,
·a group of children [offspring; brood; seed] ·doing evil [or born from evildoers],
·children [or sons] who ·are full of evil [act corruptly; are depraved].
They have ·left [abandoned; forsaken] the Lord;
they ·hate [despise; or have rejected/spurned] the Holy One of Israel [C Isaiah’s favorite title for God],
and have ·turned away [become alienated/estranged] from him.
5 Why ·should you continue to be [or do you insist on being] ·punished [battered; struck down]?
Why do you continue to ·turn against him [rebel]?
Your whole head is ·hurt [bruised; wounded],
and your whole heart is ·sick [faint; weak].
6 There is no ·healthy spot [soundness]
from the ·bottom [sole] of your foot to the top of your head;
you are covered with ·wounds [bruises], ·hurts [sores; welts], and ·open sores [raw/infected wounds]
that are not ·cleaned [L pressed out] and ·covered [bandaged],
·and no medicine takes away the pain [L not soothed/softened with oil].
7 Your land is ·ruined [desolate];
your cities have been burned with fire.
·While you watch [Right in front of you],
·your enemies [L foreigners; strangers] ·are stealing everything from [destroy; devour] your ·land [fields; crops];
it is ruined like a country ·destroyed [overthrown] by ·enemies [L foreigners; strangers].
8 Jerusalem [L Daughter Zion; C the location of the Temple] is left alone
like an ·empty shelter [or watchman’s hut] in a vineyard,
like a ·hut [shelter] left in a field of ·melons [or cucumbers],
like a city ·surrounded by enemies [besieged].
9 If the Lord ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts]
had not ·allowed a few of our people to live [left us a few survivors],
we would have been like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah [C completely destroyed; Gen. 19].
10 ·Hear [Listen to] the word of the Lord,
you rulers of Sodom [C Jerusalem is compared sarcastically to evil Sodom and Gomorrah]!
listen to the ·teaching [instruction] of our God,
You people of Gomorrah!
11 The Lord says,
“·I do not want all these sacrifices [L What are your many sacrifices to me?].
I ·have had enough of [am stuffed full with] your burnt sacrifices [Lev. 1:1–17]
of male sheep and fat from ·fine [fattened] ·animals [beasts; cattle].
I ·am not pleased by [take no pleasure in]
the blood of bulls, lambs, and goats.
12 You ·come to meet with [appear before; worship] me,
but who asked you to do
all this ·running in and out of [trampling/parading through] my ·Temple’s rooms [courts; courtyards]?
13 Don’t continue bringing me ·worthless [meaningless; futile] sacrifices!
·I hate the incense you burn [L Incense is detestable/an abomination to me].
I can’t stand your New Moons, Sabbaths, and ·other feast days [convocations; sacred assemblies];
I can’t ·stand [endure] ·the evil you do in your holy meetings [L sin and assembly].
14 I hate your New Moon ·feasts [festivals; Num. 28:11–15]
and your ·other yearly [annual; appointed] feasts.
They have become a ·heavy weight on [burden to] me,
and I ·am tired of carrying it [or can no longer tolerate them].
15 When you ·raise your arms to me [L spread out your hands] in prayer,
I will ·refuse to look at [look the other way; L hide my eyes from] you.
Even if you say many prayers,
I will not listen to you,
because your hands are ·full of [covered with] blood.
16 Wash yourselves and make yourselves clean.
·Stop doing the evil things I see you do [L Take away your evil deeds from my eyes].
Stop doing wrong.
17 Learn to do ·good [right].
Seek justice.
·Punish those who hurt others [Rebuke the oppressor; or Encourage the oppressed].
·Help [Defend; Bring justice to] the ·orphans [fatherless].
·Stand up for the rights of [L Contend/Strive for] widows.”
18 The Lord says,
“Come, let us ·talk about these things [reason together; or settle this matter; or consider your options].
Though your sins are like scarlet [C stained with blood; vv. 15, 21],
they can be as white as snow.
Though your sins are ·deep red [L red as crimson/purple],
they can be white like wool.
19 If you become willing and ·obey [listen to] me,
you will eat ·good crops from [the good of] the land.
20 But if you ·refuse to obey [resist] and ·if you turn against me [rebel],
you will be ·destroyed [L devoured] by your enemies’ swords [C the options are to eat the crops or be eaten by the swords].”
The Lord himself ·said these things [has spoken].
Jerusalem Is Not Loyal to God
21 [L See how; or How…!] The ·city of Jerusalem once followed the Lord [L faithful city],
·but she is no longer loyal to him [L …has become a prostitute/whore; C a metaphor for spiritual treachery].
She used to be filled with ·fairness [justice];
·people there lived the way God wanted [Righteousness/Justice lived/lodged there; C personification].
But now, murderers live there.
22 ·Jerusalem, you have become like the scum left when silver is purified [L Your silver has become dross/scum];
you are like ·wine [beer; alcohol; L drink] ·mixed [diluted; weakened] with water.
23 Your ·rulers [princes] are rebels
and ·friends [companions; associates] of thieves.
They all ·accept money for doing wrong [L love bribes],
and they ·are paid to cheat people [pursue rewards/gifts].
They don’t ·seek justice for [defend the cause of] the ·orphans [fatherless]
or ·listen to the widows’ needs [or defend the widows’ rights; L the widows’ disputes do not come before them].
24 So the Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts],
the Mighty One of Israel, says:
“[L Woe; Alas; Aha,] I will ·take revenge on [vent my wrath against; or get relief from; console myself by destroying] my ·foes [enemies; adversaries].
I will pay back my ·enemies [foes].
25 I will turn [L my hand] against you
and ·clean away all your wrongs as if with soap [or purify you as metal is refined; L purge your dross as with lye/potash/soap];
I will ·take all the worthless things out of you [L remove all your impurities/slag].
26 I will ·bring back [restore] judges as you had ·long ago [formerly; at the first];
your ·counselors [advisors] will be like those you had in the beginning.
Then you will be called the City ·That Is Right with God [of Righteousness/Justice],
the ·Loyal [Faithful; Trustworthy] City.”
27 By ·doing what is fair [justice],
·Jerusalem [L Zion; C the location of the Temple] will be ·free again [redeemed; restored].
By ·doing what is right [righteousness],
her ·people who come back to the Lord [penitent/repentant ones; or returnees] will have freedom.
28 But ·those who turn against him [rebels] and sinners will be destroyed;
those who ·have left [abandon; forsake] the Lord will ·die [perish; come to an end; cease].
29 “You will be ashamed,
because ·you have worshiped gods under the oak trees [L of the oaks you have desired; C pagan worship sites].
You will be ·disgraced [embarrassed],
because ·you have worshiped idols in your gardens [L of the gardens you have chosen; 66:17].
30 You will be like an oak whose leaves are ·dying [withered]
or like a garden without water.

and their works will be like sparks.
They will burn together,
and no one will be able to put out that fire.”

1 The vision(A) concerning Judah and Jerusalem(B) that Isaiah son of Amoz saw(C) during the reigns of Uzziah,(D) Jotham,(E) Ahaz(F) and Hezekiah,(G) kings of Judah.
A Rebellious Nation
2 Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!(H)
For the Lord has spoken:(I)
“I reared children(J) and brought them up,
but they have rebelled(K) against me.
3 The ox knows(L) its master,
the donkey its owner’s manger,(M)
but Israel does not know,(N)
my people do not understand.(O)”
4 Woe to the sinful nation,
a people whose guilt is great,(P)
a brood of evildoers,(Q)
children given to corruption!(R)
They have forsaken(S) the Lord;
they have spurned the Holy One(T) of Israel
and turned their backs(U) on him.
5 Why should you be beaten(V) anymore?
Why do you persist(W) in rebellion?(X)
Your whole head is injured,
your whole heart(Y) afflicted.(Z)
6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head(AA)
there is no soundness(AB)—
only wounds and welts(AC)
and open sores,
not cleansed or bandaged(AD)
or soothed with olive oil.(AE)
7 Your country is desolate,(AF)
your cities burned with fire;(AG)
your fields are being stripped by foreigners(AH)
right before you,
laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.(AI)
8 Daughter Zion(AJ) is left(AK)
like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a hut(AL) in a cucumber field,
like a city under siege.
9 Unless the Lord Almighty
had left us some survivors,(AM)
we would have become like Sodom,
we would have been like Gomorrah.(AN)
10 Hear the word of the Lord,(AO)
you rulers of Sodom;(AP)
listen to the instruction(AQ) of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!(AR)
11 “The multitude of your sacrifices—
what are they to me?” says the Lord.
“I have more than enough of burnt offerings,
of rams and the fat of fattened animals;(AS)
I have no pleasure(AT)
in the blood of bulls(AU) and lambs and goats.(AV)
12 When you come to appear before me,
who has asked this of you,(AW)
this trampling of my courts?
13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings!(AX)
Your incense(AY) is detestable(AZ) to me.
New Moons,(BA) Sabbaths and convocations(BB)—
I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.
14 Your New Moon(BC) feasts and your appointed festivals(BD)
I hate with all my being.(BE)
They have become a burden to me;(BF)
I am weary(BG) of bearing them.
15 When you spread out your hands(BH) in prayer,
I hide(BI) my eyes from you;
even when you offer many prayers,
I am not listening.(BJ)
16 Wash(BM) and make yourselves clean.
Take your evil deeds out of my sight;(BN)
stop doing wrong.(BO)
17 Learn to do right;(BP) seek justice.(BQ)
Defend the oppressed.[a](BR)
Take up the cause of the fatherless;(BS)
plead the case of the widow.(BT)
18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,”(BU)
says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;(BV)
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.(BW)
19 If you are willing and obedient,(BX)
you will eat the good things of the land;(BY)
20 but if you resist and rebel,(BZ)
you will be devoured by the sword.”(CA)
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.(CB)
21 See how the faithful city
has become a prostitute!(CC)
She once was full of justice;
righteousness(CD) used to dwell in her—
but now murderers!(CE)
22 Your silver has become dross,(CF)
your choice wine is diluted with water.
23 Your rulers are rebels,(CG)
partners with thieves;(CH)
they all love bribes(CI)
and chase after gifts.
They do not defend the cause of the fatherless;
the widow’s case does not come before them.(CJ)
24 Therefore the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
the Mighty One(CK) of Israel, declares:
“Ah! I will vent my wrath on my foes
and avenge(CL) myself on my enemies.(CM)
25 I will turn my hand against you;[b](CN)
I will thoroughly purge(CO) away your dross(CP)
and remove all your impurities.(CQ)
26 I will restore your leaders as in days of old,(CR)
your rulers as at the beginning.
Afterward you will be called(CS)
the City of Righteousness,(CT)
the Faithful City.(CU)”
27 Zion will be delivered with justice,
her penitent(CV) ones with righteousness.(CW)
28 But rebels and sinners(CX) will both be broken,
and those who forsake(CY) the Lord will perish.(CZ)
29 “You will be ashamed(DA) because of the sacred oaks(DB)
in which you have delighted;
you will be disgraced because of the gardens(DC)
that you have chosen.
30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves,(DD)
like a garden without water.
31 The mighty man will become tinder
and his work a spark;
both will burn together,
with no one to quench the fire.(DE)”

2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
8 And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
9 Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.
10 Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
24 Therefore saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:
25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:
26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the Lord shall be consumed.
29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.
31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.
