10 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God!
(A)Surely You have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem,
(B)Saying, ‘You shall have peace,’
Whereas the sword reaches to the [a]heart.”

11 At that time it will be said
To this people and to Jerusalem,
(C)“A dry wind of the desolate heights blows in the wilderness
Toward the daughter of My people—
Not to fan or to cleanse—
12 A wind too strong for these will come for Me;
Now (D)I will also speak judgment against them.”

13 “Behold, he shall come up like clouds,
And (E)his chariots like a whirlwind.
(F)His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are plundered!”

14 O Jerusalem, (G)wash your heart from wickedness,
That you may be saved.
How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares (H)from Dan
And proclaims [b]affliction from Mount Ephraim:
16 “Make mention to the nations,
Yes, proclaim against Jerusalem,
That watchers come from a (I)far country
And raise their voice against the cities of Judah.
17 (J)Like keepers of a field they are against her all around,
Because she has been rebellious against Me,” says the Lord.
18 “Your(K) ways and your doings
Have procured these things for you.
This is your wickedness,
Because it is bitter,
Because it reaches to your heart.”

Sorrow for the Doomed Nation

19 O my (L)soul, my soul!
I am pained in my very heart!
My heart makes a noise in me;
I cannot hold my peace,
Because you have heard, O my soul,
The sound of the trumpet,
The alarm of war.
20 (M)Destruction upon destruction is cried,
For the whole land is plundered.
Suddenly (N)my tents are plundered,
And my curtains in a moment.
21 How long will I see the [c]standard,
And hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 “For My people are foolish,
They have not known Me.
They are [d]silly children,
And they have no understanding.
(O)They are wise to do evil,
But to do good they have no knowledge.”

23 (P)I beheld the earth, and indeed it was (Q)without form, and void;
And the heavens, they had no light.
24 (R)I beheld the mountains, and indeed they trembled,
And all the hills moved back and forth.
25 I beheld, and indeed there was no man,
And (S)all the birds of the heavens had fled.
26 I beheld, and indeed the fruitful land was a (T)wilderness,
And all its cities were broken down
At the presence of the Lord,
By His fierce anger.

27 For thus says the Lord:

“The whole land shall be desolate;
(U)Yet I will not make a full end.
28 For this (V)shall the earth mourn,
And (W)the heavens above be black,
Because I have spoken.
I have (X)purposed and (Y)will not relent,
Nor will I turn back from it.
29 The whole city shall flee from the noise of the horsemen and bowmen.
They shall go into thickets and climb up on the rocks.
Every city shall be forsaken,
And not a man shall dwell in it.

30 “And when you are plundered,
What will you do?
Though you clothe yourself with crimson,
Though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold,
(Z)Though you enlarge your eyes with paint,
In vain you will make yourself fair;
(AA)Your lovers will despise you;
They will seek your life.

31 “For I have heard a voice as of a woman in [e]labor,
The anguish as of her who brings forth her first child,
The voice of the daughter of Zion bewailing herself;
She (AB)spreads her hands, saying,
‘Woe is me now, for my soul is [f]weary
Because of murderers!’

The Justice of God’s Judgment

“Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem;
See now and know;
And seek in her open places
(AC)If you can find a man,
(AD)If there is anyone who executes [g]judgment,
Who seeks the truth,
(AE)And I will pardon her.
(AF)Though they say, ‘As (AG)the Lord lives,’
Surely they (AH)swear falsely.”

O Lord, are not (AI)Your eyes on the truth?
You have (AJ)stricken them,
But they have not grieved;
You have consumed them,
But (AK)they have refused to receive correction.
They have made their faces harder than rock;
They have refused to return.

Therefore I said, “Surely these are poor.
They are foolish;
For (AL)they do not know the way of the Lord,
The judgment of their God.
I will go to the great men and speak to them,
For (AM)they have known the way of the Lord,
The judgment of their God.”

But these have altogether (AN)broken the yoke
And burst the bonds.
Therefore (AO)a lion from the forest shall slay them,
(AP)A wolf of the deserts shall destroy them;
(AQ)A leopard will watch over their cities.
Everyone who goes out from there shall be torn in pieces,
Because their transgressions are many;
Their backslidings have increased.

“How shall I pardon you for this?
Your children have forsaken Me
And (AR)sworn by those (AS)that are not gods.
(AT)When I had fed them to the full,
Then they committed adultery
And assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
(AU)They were like well-fed lusty stallions;
Every one neighed after his neighbor’s wife.
Shall I not punish them for these things?” says the Lord.
“And shall I not (AV)avenge Myself on such a nation as this?

10 “Go up on her walls and destroy,
But do not [h]make a (AW)complete end.
Take away her branches,
For they are not the Lord’s.
11 For (AX)the house of Israel and the house of Judah
Have dealt very treacherously with Me,” says the Lord.

12 (AY)They have lied about the Lord,
And said, (AZ)It is not He.
(BA)Neither will [i]evil come upon us,
Nor shall we see sword or famine.
13 And the prophets become wind,
For the word is not in them.
Thus shall it be done to them.”

14 Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts:

“Because you speak this word,
(BB)Behold, I will make My words in your mouth fire,
And this people wood,
And it shall devour them.
15 Behold, I will bring a (BC)nation against you (BD)from afar,
O house of Israel,” says the Lord.
“It is a mighty nation,
It is an ancient nation,
A nation whose language you do not know,
Nor can you understand what they say.
16 Their quiver is like an open tomb;
They are all mighty men.
17 And they shall eat up your (BE)harvest and your bread,
Which your sons and daughters should eat.
They shall eat up your flocks and your herds;
They shall eat up your vines and your fig trees;
They shall destroy your fortified cities,
In which you trust, with the sword.

18 “Nevertheless in those days,” says the Lord, “I (BF)will not [j]make a complete end of you. 19 And it will be when you say, (BG)‘Why does the Lord our God do all these things to us?’ then you shall answer them, ‘Just as you have (BH)forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so (BI)you shall serve aliens in a land that is not yours.’

20 “Declare this in the house of Jacob
And proclaim it in Judah, saying,
21 ‘Hear this now, O (BJ)foolish people,
Without [k]understanding,
Who have eyes and see not,
And who have ears and hear not:
22 (BK)Do you not fear Me?’ says the Lord.
‘Will you not tremble at My presence,
Who have placed the sand as the (BL)bound of the sea,
By a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it?
And though its waves toss to and fro,
Yet they cannot prevail;
Though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.
23 But this people has a defiant and rebellious heart;
They have revolted and departed.
24 They do not say in their heart,
“Let us now fear the Lord our God,
(BM)Who gives rain, both the (BN)former and the latter, in its season.
(BO)He reserves for us the appointed weeks of the harvest.”
25 (BP)Your iniquities have turned these things away,
And your sins have withheld good from you.

26 ‘For among My people are found wicked men;
They (BQ)lie in wait as one who sets snares;
They set a trap;
They catch men.
27 As a cage is full of birds,
So their houses are full of deceit.
Therefore they have become great and grown rich.
28 They have grown (BR)fat, they are sleek;
Yes, they [l]surpass the deeds of the wicked;
They do not plead (BS)the cause,
The cause of the fatherless;
(BT)Yet they prosper,
And the right of the needy they do not defend.
29 (BU)Shall I not punish them for these things?’ says the Lord.
‘Shall I not avenge Myself on such a nation as this?’

30 “An astonishing and (BV)horrible thing
Has been committed in the land:
31 The prophets prophesy (BW)falsely,
And the priests rule by their own power;
And My people (BX)love to have it so.
But what will you do in the end?

All for Christ

Finally, my brethren, (A)rejoice in the Lord. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe.

(B)Beware of dogs, beware of (C)evil workers, (D)beware of the mutilation! For we are (E)the circumcision, (F)who worship [a]God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh, though (G)I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I (H)more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, (I)of the tribe of Benjamin, (J)a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, (K)a Pharisee; concerning zeal, (L)persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

But (M)what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss (N)for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having (O)my own righteousness, which is from the law, but (P)that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the (Q)power of His resurrection, and (R)the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may (S)attain[b] to the resurrection from the dead.

Pressing Toward the Goal

12 Not that I have already (T)attained,[c] or am already (U)perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have [d]apprehended; but one thing I do, (V)forgetting those things which are behind and (W)reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 (X)I press toward the goal for the prize of (Y)the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

15 Therefore let us, as many as are (Z)mature, (AA)have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, (AB)God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already [e]attained, (AC)let us walk (AD)by the same [f]rule, let us be of the same mind.

Our Citizenship in Heaven

17 Brethren, (AE)join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as (AF)you have us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are (AG)the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 (AH)whose end is destruction, (AI)whose god is their belly, and (AJ)whose glory is in their shame—(AK)who set their mind on earthly things. 20 For (AL)our citizenship is in heaven, (AM)from which we also (AN)eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 (AO)who will transform our lowly body that it may be (AP)conformed to His glorious body, (AQ)according to the working by which He is able even to (AR)subdue all things to Himself.

Be Anxious for Nothing; Think These Thoughts

Therefore, my beloved and (AS)longed-for brethren, (AT)my joy and crown, so (AU)stand fast in the Lord, beloved.

Thanksgiving for Deliverance from Death

116 I (A)love the Lord, because He has heard
My voice and my supplications.
Because He has inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

(B)The [a]pains of death surrounded me,
And the [b]pangs of Sheol [c]laid hold of me;
I found trouble and sorrow.
Then I called upon the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I implore You, deliver my soul!”

(C)Gracious is the Lord, and (D)righteous;
Yes, our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
I was brought low, and He saved me.
Return to your (E)rest, O my soul,
For (F)the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.

(G)For You have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from falling.
I will walk before the Lord
(H)In the land of the living.
10 (I)I believed, therefore I spoke,
“I am greatly afflicted.”
11 (J)I said in my haste,
(K)“All men are liars.”
